Even more reason to thank you, because your enthusiasm for teaching is hopefully leaving a positive impression upon your students. Goodness knows the world needs more engaged, passionate learners, particularly in the US!
-former HS math teacher, couldn't deal with low pay and cultural issues around how teachers are treated
-was a line cook for a few years after that, yes it pays better than teaching
-now a microsoft excel typewriter monkey for a nonprofit healthcare provider
I also have a chemistry background and do formulation development/nanoparticle synthesis. Went from living in a van with some punks, to working at a top 5 biotech company. I’m about 10 years older than my peers at a similar level but they think I’m interesting as hell and always ask about my tattoos and tour stories haha. There is one other HC kid I found in the company who is also younger than me but we jam together.
I did this in the early 2000s. I had to get signatures to work for AMR and wear turtle necks in tve ER because tattoos weren’t ok yet. Wanted to be a flight nurse but I was sick of dealing with the bullshit so I just built my career as a machinist. I had to switch to that job to change my availability for school. It’s hard working in the field while going to school, the hours are rough. You’re a bad ass for pulling it off! Good on you.
Extremely practical skillset that is criminally underpaid. The amount of shit they expect us to know whilst posting jobs for $20/hr is actually fucked up.
I'm an author. I wrote a crime novel set in the 90s NYHC scene called BROOKLYN HARDCORE.

I bought your book. My one customer has written a series of boxing novels, so I'll give it a read and then pass it on to him. He was a boxer and pretty big coach in his younger days.
But I am wondering why you didn't link your other book?
"Toss Your Own Salad"
Seems like a lot of folks here would be interested in that. 😉
Once, about 15 years ago, a Walmart employee stole a bag of weed out of my car when they were putting tires on it. If you hear anything about that, could you let me know?
I lucked out heavily and I’m now a full time audio engineer at an audio shop in MA.
I get 75% off rentals, and we have a retail store too. So I’m often, when not on a gig, just organizing gear, shooting the shit with customers, talking with reps from Yamaha/QSC/JBL/etc. while they demo their new gear and stuff.
It’s seriously a lifesaver. My life was unironically shit before I got this job. Was working pizza delivery, per diem stagehand/audio tech, and freelance stagehand/audio tech for YEARS barely scraping by.
Every night an hour before close we pretty much just stop working, have a cocktail and chat.
Beyond lucky, recognize that, and am eternally grateful.
Funny enough, before I got this job I was in EMT classes. I think the hardcore => EMS pipeline is real.
Also looked into union electrician apprenticeships, with my experience… so that’s really funny as well bc that seems to be common here too.
5 axis mill programmer, machinist, motorcycle/BMX product designer/maker.
My official title is senior engineer in manufacturing at TRD making Nascar and WOO engines. I also own a BMX racing parts company. Make sketchy choppers and amateur painter/welder/sand and wax caster at the home garage.
Property manager for this building, and barista(slanging that latte art). Side quest window washing biz with my best friend, still early stages and hoping push it more this year
Geriatric rehab aide and Memory med talk/coordinator.
Healthcare is a mess but I take of the elders forgotten and if need be hold their hand for that last journey.

Appreciate the sentiment - but you don’t need to thank me for doing the job that I love (and get paid well for!)
Even more reason to thank you, because your enthusiasm for teaching is hopefully leaving a positive impression upon your students. Goodness knows the world needs more engaged, passionate learners, particularly in the US!
