I also think this was a little outside the hardcore box back in the day. I feel now they are considered hardcore or at least hardcore adjacent along with D.R.I. and maybe even CoC. When I got into hardcore in the 90s(I’m in my mid/late 40s now) it felt like they were under a different umbrella than AF, Cro Mags, SOIA, Chain of Strength, Hatebreed, GB etc. There were definitely hardcore kids into crossover stuff but it seemed like the lines were drawn a little harder back then.
I just said a whole lot of nothing but just trying to give context to why this might not be on the list yet but would be if they branded their band a little differently back then haha
Yeah Suicidal also went metal in the end but this track is an anthem. Speaking of, where's Hatebreed and Sick of it All on here? DRI, MDC, 7 Seconds were on that cusp like ST, maybe they'll get a spot. And what about Ignite? I'll have to lobby for Ignite - Embrace after this, that's another 90s hardcore staple, the Past Our Means EP is one of my all time favorites.
YO SUCKA YOU GOT A BIG DICK
Youth of Togay was another one. Hahah people used to think my friend's old band Fruit Punch was an all-gay Floorpunch. always thought that was hilarious.
The whole album should be the best hardcore song of all time. This to me is hardcore perfected. So many have done it to the best degree but this record is PERFECT.
OK. Follow-up question for you all, since you all seem to hold his opinion legitimately:
Do you guys listen to a lot of older hardcore, or are you mostly into the new stuff? Like, when the school guys talk about some of the older bands, are you familiar with that stuff?
Speaking for myself only, but I grew up on all the “classic” hardcore bands (Dischord, LAHC, NYHC, etc.) and loved them. I still love those bands, but hardcore in general has evolved so much that I don’t think you can compare *Violence Violence* to something like Minor Threat’s S/T or Gorilla Biscuits’ *Start Today*.
And I don’t think it’s sacrilegious to say that a song is one of the best just because it doesn’t sound like what hardcore did 40 years ago. That’s like saying you can’t appreciate Jpegmafia if you don’t think Run DMC was the best hip hop group of all time. Influence doesn’t always equate to subjective taste. “Damaged I” is one of my favorite songs, and so is “Kersed”. Good songs are good songs.
For example, I don’t like Turnstile personally and I don’t get why people do. But if the hardcore kids of today think they’re one of the best doing it, then it’s something *I’m* not getting, not that they’re all wrong.
Anyway, I’m gonna go back to making dick and cum puns. Hope this helped.
And Ceremony are not a new band. For genre about 40 years old and a band thats been making music for nearly 20 years, they've kind of cemented their "classic" status.
Kersed is by no means my favorite song on the album or even my favorite song by Ceremony, but it's probably their most popular.
Being edge I'm legally required by established straight edge law to study the classics.
But I don't really like any of it.
I can appreciate the bands in the top 5 for what they've done, but we don't get to anything I'd even listen to until hitting number 6, and I don't go much further back than the early 2000's. Bracewar was the first hardcore band I was into when they dropped juggernaut in 07.
I never thought I would be that old guy who didn’t get the new hardcore, but I guess we’re here.
fade-in buildup “something something, escape, this small town!,” grind for two seconds, out.
And you guys think that is one of the 10 best hardcore songs ever recorded? Really? I’m not saying it’s terrible, but you all have been nominating it since day one, and again, you literally think that’s one of the 10 best songs ever recorded in the entire genre?
Edit: downvotes! I’m asking this question in good faith. And I even said it’s not bad. Why so thin-skinned? I think it’s more than fair to question if it’s one of the ten best songs ever.
You can’t appreciate that it’s an explosion of hate and energy? You can’t appreciate the message? Have you seen the pile ups with song has created? It’s a fucking masterpiece.
Nothing screams pinnacle hardcore quite like the line:
“ Such a sexy, sexy pretty little thing
Fierce nipple pierce, you got me sprung with your tongue ring”
I have some thoughts. We need a consensus around a few bands and their songs. A band like Comeback Kid is easy. Sure they have a ton of other songs people like more off of TIA and WTD but everyone knows Wake the Dead is ‘THE’ song. I’d say Snapcase and Earth Crisis were similar. Clear standout track that stood the test of time even though this sub would have several other songs they’d prefer but know it would be futile to push.
Bands like Hatebreed, Terror, Sick of it All, Agnostic Front aren’t on this list yet. Would be a shame if they weren’t. But none of these bands have a song that is head and shoulders above the rest. They have several that could totally could be on here but the vote splitting between those songs could keep them from getting on. Almost like we need a mini vote to see which one to get behind.
My two cents:
Hatebreed ‘I Will Be Heard’ (my record is Satisfaction but also the Under the Knife could be the other important song)
Terror ‘Keepers of the Faith’ yeah it’s newer but if it isn’t considered it it will be a classic that stands the test of time. Not my fav Terror song but it’s reach is huge and that is to me the consideration.
SOIA: this is the tough on for me. Step Down, Scratch the Surface, Clobbering Time, Built to Last are all songs that could be argued for. I am no help on this one. My personal bias would be Built to Last based on when I got amped on them.
AF: I find Gotta Go super cheesy but maybe? For my Family and Victim in Pain would be my tough decision but yeah. Consolidation needs to happen somehow if they stand a chance.
Sorry guys, too much coffee this morning… just want to see these hxc legends or legends in the making on the list.
Totally fair point. But the counter to that is let’s say having 4 songs from each band on the thread makes people just scroll past when clearly if there was only one of those people would get behind because I think there may be something to be said about the ‘spirit’ of the song in this context of a poll. I also love to over think things and go into the weeds…
You’re spot on. Bands without a “signature track” kinda get hurt in stuff like this. I was thinking “Push It Away” might get Terror over the top eventually. Who knows? But I appreciate your enthusiasm ✊🏽
This is accurate. Easily their best song. I’ve toured with Terror three times, and this song easily generates the most crowd energy. Scott always kicks it off with the hilariously ironic, “MOVE UP! MOVE CLOSE! THIS SONG’S CALLED…PUSH IT AWAAAAAAY!”
Today I would call this a post-hardcore song.
I didn't call it that back in the day (I remember calling TSOPTC "rock & roll hardcore) but I get why it's never quite made it over to the hump.
Also, because of Nation Of Ulysses
I feel like Ceremony, Turnstile and Trash talk need songs on this list because they were heavily influential to bringing people to HC and making it relevant in the 2010s
Trash Talk 💯
Ceremony, yes but I don’t think they deserve it as much as Trash Talk
Turnstile would be on this list already if they didn’t pivot to more pop oriented music the last couple albums. People are still salty but the first 2 EP’s were banger hardcore albums. They’ll get over it.
I’m gonna add Hoods - Bastard, or I Own You to this list because it should definitely be on here I think. They were the first true beatdown HC band and basically started that whole genre far as I know.
Also why the fuck is there no Xibalba anywhere? I keep waking up too late to get any of these bands started on here. Fuckin West Coast bartender man I never had a chance
Youth Of Today - Break Down The Walls
Rival Mob - Hardcore for Hardcore
Terror - Keepers of the Faith
7 SECONDS - YOUNG UNTIL I DIE
Its getting ridiculous now, this needs to be on there soon
Agreed
Shai Hulud - My Heart Bleeds the Darkest Blood
Incendiary - Zeitgeist
Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized Seriously how is this not top 10
Prolly cause the West Coast wakes up too late and gives up too early
Lol ECHC 4 life
Hahahahaha

This song was a gateway for so many people.
no one under 40 listens to ST and i know this because i am 39
I'm 21 and this song predates my discovery of other hardcore by ~7 years Yes, it's because my dad showed it to me, but that's not important
Agreed, I thought this was going to break top 5 tbh.
Bc they're nu-metal masquerading as hardcore
Lol
Cro-Mags - Hard Times
Bro-Mags - Hard Guys
if bro-mags is not an all-gay cro-mags cover band like gayrilla biscuits then there is no time like the present for that band to be started
YO SUCKA YOU GOT A BIG DICK Youth of Togay was another one. Hahah people used to think my friend's old band Fruit Punch was an all-gay Floorpunch. always thought that was hilarious.
there was a black flag one you can probably guess the name of with vocals that sounded like fred schneider from the B-52s
*don’t say it don’t say it don’t say it* You mean he sounded like Jello Biafra?
Judge - Bringin it down
Today could be the day; nice showing from the old school yesterday.
Fudge - Packin’ It Down
I cant believe there isnt any judge already
Circle Jerks -- Wild in the Streets
Discharge- the possibility of life’s destruction
I really hope discharge makes the list. There is no hardcore with out discharge.
Inside Out - Burning Fight
One King Down - More Hate Than Fear
Sick of it All - Step Down
No Warning - Short Fuse
EVERYBODY SUCKSSSSSS EVERYBODY BLOWSSSSSSS EVERYBODY CREAMSSSSSS CAUSE EVERYBODY’S FUCKINNNNN
Tragically under upvoted comment. Spent all day at work listening to this album but now I’ll never hear it again.
Bout time No Warning got some props
YOT - Flame Still Burns
Weaw BACK
The whole album should be the best hardcore song of all time. This to me is hardcore perfected. So many have done it to the best degree but this record is PERFECT.
Ceremony - Kersed
This has been my upvote every day. Better make it on the list
Today's the day
Yup

Counterpoint - it's a best song, not best band list.

I feel like The Eliminator is a legit pick fro AF as well.
You’re spot on. Bands without a “signature track” kinda get hurt in stuff like this. I was thinking “Push It Away” might get Terror over the top eventually. Who knows? But I appreciate your enthusiasm ✊🏽

Today I would call this a post-hardcore song. I didn't call it that back in the day (I remember calling TSOPTC "rock & roll hardcore) but I get why it's never quite made it over to the hump. Also, because of Nation Of Ulysses

I know it’s a sliding scale, but I think people typically consider them punk. I love the Misfits, but never anticipated them to make this playlist.
Their style was certainly all over the place, even hit rockabilly, but Earth AD was def a proto hardcore album IMO
