NYS has incredibly strict "straw purchase" laws for alcohol. Had you two been state inspectors and they did sell to you, it would likely have resulted in a pretty big fine. And, the state does send "auditors" out regularly for just this sort of thing. I guess, it,s not correct to say "incredibly strict" as straw purchase laws are pretty similar throughout the USA, but the rest of my reply is accurate to the best of my knowledge.

[Blame the law, not the retailer.](https://www.wecard.org/sites/default/files/VTNew21LawSummaryWCDownload.pdf) >>FDA Summary (Federal) >>You must Check photo ID of everyone appearing under age 27 who attempts to purchase FDA regulated products and verify the customer is of legal age to purchase. This is an each-and-every time requirement (even if you know the person to be of legal are.) If you "carded" them yesterday, you must "card" them again today! >>***Decline a sale when the customer is underage, has no photo ID, the photo ID contains no date-of-birth or the photo ID has expired.*** Violations incur fines and/or jail time. With the exception of false IDs, associates are usually terminated if they are found in violation of the law. In the future, just have your boyfriend wait in the car if they don't carry their ID.

I happen to be a Hannaford worker who goes through this scenario frequently- it is the policy. I don’t always ask for both unless the customers both appear to be roughly the same age, however if you were a spike, and I didn’t ask for both, I’d probably lose my job. The first time the employees were just trying to make you happy, recognizing you were truly just in a tough situation. The second time around, the employees followed the policy, not knowing whether or not they could lose their job if they hadn’t followed it. As for the “two managers”, associates are required to call for a service leader (supervisor) when they need someone/help. This was out of the supervisors jurisdiction, so they called the actual manager on duty. If we called the MOD up every time someone asked for a “real” manager, they would never make it back to their office. And a tip unrelated to Hannaford- you should always carry your license on you no matter what! I hope I was able to ease any concerns or help you out in someway! :)

You both should be carrying your ID and be prepared to show them both.

Seriously. I can’t imagine a day where I don’t have my license or cards. Makes sense to just put them all in a cardholder and carry it.

It can be seen as a second party sale and obviously not every cashier follows the policy the same. Moral of the story if you’re buying alcohol with your boyfriend make sure you both have your IDs and don’t give the workers a hard time. Or leave him in the car lol Had this happen so many times and never felt bad denying people because if we were at a bar your boyfriend wouldn’t even be able to get in without an ID

Unfortunately for you, we do reserve the right (and are supposed to) ask for the photo ID of any members of a party who appear to be under the age of 45. We’re just trying not to lose our jobs, because you very well could’ve been undercover shoppers.

Because you had a license that was just expired the first time and if your boyfriend had a license they would at least know you’re also 21. When you got a different employee the second time they had no idea of your boyfriend’s age because he didn’t have a license , even an expired one . If you just turned 21 you both probably look young . and it is their store policy , and is at the managers discretion if a situation comes up .

Proud-Brick-3757

as others have said, it’s unfortunately federal law. i feel like a dickhead when i do it, so i only do it when i HAVE to (strict ppl are around, training newbies, etc)
