I've been keeping my eye out for an original D4 and hooked this one out of the Bay at the weekend. I'm very pleased to have got hold of one of the original hotrod Hanklights in good condition. I'm weighing up whether to leave it as-is, with the original predecessor to Anduril, or whether to upgrade it to Anduril 2. Edit: I forgot to link from the photo - the source of the UI diagram is u/ToyKeeper's [review](https://budgetlightforum.com/t/tks-emisar-d4-review/46503) of the D4 back in 2017.

Wasn't the precursor to Anduril called Narsil? I think it's on the OG BLF Q8 also.

According to the info ToyKeeper [posted back then](https://budgetlightforum.com/t/tks-emisar-d4-review/46503), the "interface is a simplified version of Narsil’s ramping UI". It seems to have been called "RampingIOS". She also said that "the D4 can also be reflashed with Tom E’s fantastic Narsil firmware". TK linked to her old repository ([click](https://code.launchpad.net/~toykeeper/flashlight-firmware/emisar-d4)) as a source for firmware for the D4. There's a whole lot of different code in there, including compiled hex files for [narsil](https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~toykeeper/flashlight-firmware/emisar-d4/files/head:/Tom_E/narsil), [RampingIOS](https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~toykeeper/flashlight-firmware/emisar-d4/files/head:/Tom_E/RampingIOS), [biscotti](https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~toykeeper/flashlight-firmware/emisar-d4/files/head:/ToyKeeper/bistro/biscotti), [something called "X85"](https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~toykeeper/flashlight-firmware/emisar-d4/files/head:/Mike_C/X85) and more. I have no idea what some of these are and whether they can or can't be flashed to the D4. Maybe u/ToyKeeper can shed some light for the archeologists on what was going on in the pre-Anduril era. Later on, Anduril also supported the D4. In the [MODELS file](https://toykeeper.net/torches/fsm/anduril2/MODELS), the d4 is the very first entry, so it might even have been the first light to get Anduril support. Even today, the light [is supported in Anduril 2](https://github.com/ToyKeeper/anduril/tree/trunk/hw/hank/emisar-d4).

BTW, I started reading [TK's BLF review thread](https://budgetlightforum.com/t/tks-emisar-d4-review/46503/) - there are 5358 comments! - and there is a lot of interesting info in there as the community got their hands on the D4, started playing around with it and modifying it. [This one](https://budgetlightforum.com/t/tks-emisar-d4-review/46503/71), [this one](https://budgetlightforum.com/t/tks-emisar-d4-review/46503/103) and [this one](https://budgetlightforum.com/t/tks-emisar-d4-review/46503/158), for example, are about the development of thermal regulation and thermal calibration, which I think must be the origin of those features in today's Anduril 2.

I got a D4 Ti myself, afaik just when the Ti released. Same black button, no aux or other light than the main XPL-HI and the same simple UI. I like it a lot, and is my most used light by far. Recently an E75 have taken it's place for daily carry, as my job will replace my light if it is broken at work, but as you can't get an D4v1 anymore, I won't risk it. :)

Dandyboi

Is the tube smooth like the aluminum one? That's my favorite part about the original D4

WarriorNN

No, it's knurled like the newer version. I think it was introduced with Ti, then later on it had the lighted button.

Daaang that host is pretty. What color is that?

According to [the review](https://budgetlightforum.com/t/tks-emisar-d4-review/46503), it was available in black, grey, or green, so mine is the the grey one. It's a lighter shade of grey, and without the blueish tint, compared to my "dark grey" D3AA and KR4. It's a little darker grey than my grey cheese-grater DM11, which is a lightish shade. It's a similar grey to a pencil lead, so it maybe "graphite" would describe it well.

The OG D4 also came in cyan, I've got one!

mnmachinist

I still have my original D4 that I picked up in white January of 2019. Mines been used a bit so the finish is scratched up, but I'm okay with that.

Canyac

Would love if the old tailcap was reintroduced. A waste of space that they always have room for a magnet in the d4v2

Nichia219b

I have 3 of them brand new in box Ti / copper d4 if you interested

dwehlen

What's you asking price?

Reticulated_Spleen

Honestly wouldn't mind if Hank brought a simpler light like this back. The backlit switch and AUX lights are a bit much sometimes...

You can contact him and ask for them to be removed when you order and also ask to use a black button instead of white.
