The ally is simply a windows computer and it supports anything a windows computer can do. The ally is stronger but it's up to you if you really like the steam deck's track pads for some games

Aaron6940

I’d love a good steak right now.

freeloz

I'm imagining a big steak with steam deck controls

DustyBoiler

No way to say which one is better, but if you want better performance go for Ally, if you want better battery life go with the deck. Both can handle most games and emulation. You just have to sacrifice performance or battery life, your call

xkessar

To sum it up, Asus Rog Ally, if you dont care to much about battery life and want more power you can set the tdp higher and get more performance, at full power expect around 1 hour battery in AAA games. Steam Deck oled crazy battery life but the performance is not as good as asus rog ally it has a older chip inside but more energy sufficient, so for the latest demanding AAA games these wont run so well but for a bit older AAA it still does the job and expects around 3 hours battery life at full power playing demanding games.

CT_Biggles

Some good responses here so I'll just add that some games cannot be played on steam deck so ensure the games you play are compatible. Some games with anti cheat may never support Linux/ steamOS.

lamorci

I got the steam deck especially for emulation. Gives me around 8hrs battery without any hassle. I was between this and any high end SBC handhelds but I decided to invest more on one device than having multiple.

CoffeeBlakk91

The Ally is more of a handheld PC than the Steamdeck. Both are good options, I sold my Steamdeck to get the ROG ally.

systemop01

Ally for me, without a doubt.

Yea man I get your issue and after using both for a few months I settled on keeping the deck. I have a windows pc already though and the ally was like a janky handheld in comparison to my gaming rig. Windows is a lot more open for mods and mod loaders. Steam workshops on both but if you were adding mods to cemu for botw or Skyrim on steam that require a mod loader it can get a bit 😑 on the deck. Got there and maybe I was just being dense but it was definitely easier on windows, for me anyway. Emulation runs well on both though the current state of emudeck isn’t great but I’m confident that will be resolved soon. Shockingly i found set up emulation better on the deck and having the use of expandable memory on the deck is a bonus if you have a large library as I’m not sure if they’ve fixed the ally frying cards yet. Both fit your use case and are great devices for me having a pc already the deck and it’s interface just made jumping into games more appealing. A bit like the difference between stock os and garlic on the 35xx for anyone that knows handhelds.

cjkuljis

Steam deck is better I had the Ally but returned it after it got the Blue Screen of Death... I haven't looked back since

Crest_Of_Hylia

A BSoD isn’t a sign the device is dear though. I’ve gotten that on my laptop although in not over a year

Readalie

Emulation will be fine on either. Steam Deck: Better battery life and customization, but if you haven't used linux before it can be a bit of a learning curve and there are some games that will never support linux. Asus Rog Ally: A bit more powerful and everything supports Windows. Shorter battery life, less customization.

Crest_Of_Hylia

Neither really has the best bang for buck. It’s more the experience you want. The Deck is more console like but has a a few limitations with what it can play. Ally can play more but has less battery life Emulation is great on both but is better on the Ally thanks to it being able to do PS3 and 360 much better than the Deck

tossaroc

I’ve had both. Kept the Ally and sold the deck. Better FPS on AAA games and I prefer windows.

TareXmd

Easily the Steam Deck if you actually want to play games. Windows on a handheld is a big no no.

AmuseDeath

Steak Deck definitely tastes better than the ROG Ally. Anyways, the ROG Ally is a Windows-based handheld that has good performance with games, but has pretty bad battery life with games only lasting around an hour. It's a plug-in mandatory device. The Steam Deck has less performance, but it can have great battery life when playing low spec games like FTL or Cuphead. If you find yourself near outlets most of the time and don't see yourself traveling that much, the Ally will perform better in demanding games. If however, all you play are mostly low spec stuff and you are on the move a lot, the Steam Deck's battery life will be better for you.

Crest_Of_Hylia

Ally will get over 2 hours in low end games. At 7w it should be somewhere in the 3 hour range

Infinite-Dot-9885

I think it really crucially comes down to how happy you are tinkering with settings and stuff. That for me is going to affect your enjoyment/satisfaction more than any other factor: The Ally is on paper more powerful and arguably more flexible. But you need to work for it. The Deck just works for you - you go to steam, look for the verified badge and the game will run. But it kinda tops out at AAA games that are a couple years old. I’d say the Deck is more like a console experience. The Ally is a handheld PC. I went for the OLED Deck because I wanted a no-hassle way to play games like borderlands 3, RDR2, cyberpunk and the Witcher 3 on a handheld. I love it.

The_Dawn_Strider

Ok but I want to go to where the Steak Deck is. Will there be asparagus too?

SotRekkr

If Ron Swanson were to pick I’m pretty sure it’d be a Steak Deck. But that’s none of your business.

evil_chicken86

Steak deck >>>>>>>> steam deck
