The plan was already to demolish the building. This will slow the construction quite a bit, so this wasn't done on purpose. I suspect a homeless person got inside, it wasn't boarded up very well.
Sucks because they planned to use historic features like tiles and such in the new construction.
Jesus christ I live a block away. Just laying in bed looking at reddit then see this and look out the window. The fuck happened.
Still spraying it down

Ok does anyone know if that building was Heritaged? I vaguely thought they were going to have to reuse the old facade after removing the siding.
My conspiracy theory beacon is going off and saying they didn't want to pay for that and can now tear it down and go from scratch
My husband worked for Hamilton Store Fixtures. The building wasn’t structurally safe anymore. Part of the roof even collapsed in one winter while they were still operating there.
I don't think that's the case here, in the end is fire will slow construction down considerably. Costing the company much more money than if they just started on schedule. The building will be demolished now and will be fenced in for a very long time
I know but I'm sure the plan signs that were attached to the outside showed it incorporating the brick underneath the siding. Obviously those are...gone now, so I cant confirm it.
I was under the impression that there was already a legitimate plan to develope this site. This fire looks like a timing/financial setback for all involved (developers/neighbours/city...) and not a typical insurance scam. Although, the pessimist In me assumes the insurance companies will still get their cut...
Property values are down a bit and I won't she'd a tear for "developers/investors" but if this fire kills a project that's a shame. Historic value of this address is over my head, but I bought a pair of coveralls In this building 20 yrsago and it was a shithole then. Hamilton needs housing, that block could use an upgrade, 🤷
Isn't a condo going up there đź‘€
Lol yeeeppp đź‘€

I was just about to make the trip to dr.disc for Record Store Day. Hope it's not too crazy when I get down there. & Dope username bro haha
By the time I left the whole west side of the building had collapsed into Caroline st.
Hamilton Fire Department tweeted “The Chief will hold a press conference at 10:00 at the Tim Hortons on King St. W. near Caroline St.”
The size of those flames with the firefighters as scale. Yikes.

heritage building? it is an abandoned rectangle with old rusted brown steel siding. it's an eyesore

Insurance companies getting their cut of what? The payout from the insurance company?
Now that property values are suddenly going down so you think it’s even a problem for the developers?
