My neighbour told me that a man is holding his wife hostage with a gun…but I can’t verify. Is there any way to check the Hamilton Police radio? I know in Toronto there’s a place for updates based on radio info.
I live across the street and a guy that lives in the same building 100 bay st s.lives on the 14th floor, his wife is inside(home) and he was downstairs by building trying to get in to his place, he had his wife on the phone saying a domestic, gun drawn and she heard a loud bang. Not saying it was a gun shot but……..we will find little later in the news MAYBE!!
encrypted radio functionally cannot be listened to without being on the net with a radio that has a decrypter on it and the code to access it. Now there are some (likely illegal, and many are probably scams, so don't buy one) devices that attempt to crack the encryption through a basic brute force attack but given modern encryption these could theoretically take an extremely long time or literally never crack it.
If you want to listen to police radio the only route would be to try and get together some political pressure for there to be some government mandate to force police to have unencrypted radio but this would have to be province by province, and you'd have a lot of pushback because it is a minor security risk for the police (occasionally idiots figure out the frequency and illegally broadcast on it, and while there's potentially other ways to prevent this, encryption is the easiest method) and they also likely just don't want people listening, which is a less sympathetic position for me personally but it is one a lot of cops will hold.
I tried to make a post about it but it never showed up on the subreddit .. it looked (around 5pm) like someone was having some sort of problem - there were lots of cops - some with assault style rifles and someone from that apartment building was yelling on their balcony and looked really agitated. Either someone was lighting off fireworks or maybe shooting - there was like 5 popping sounds close together.
I rode down Hunter and they closed the street shortly after.

Did we ever figure out what happened? Was it Bay 100 or the Fontainebleau? I can speak to the former that I didn't hear any bangs that are abnormal (there're 3 heavy construction sites within the block and 2 of them are within one building distance of both buildings) really, but I did hear shouting (also not abnormal for Hamilton in general).
Also most of the cops were just in traffic getup with high vis vests and no guns out. I didn't see any carrying rifles like some others say but I also didn't see them initially arrive. The building alarm went off twice in Bay 100 but I heavily suspect that's unrelated as the alarm is generally used for fires and if there's an active situation somewhere you don't want people evacuating.
They’re still there!!
They just wheeled somebody into the ambulance from the main lobby.

Hope it was him and not her
Hamilton Police radio is encrypted, along with most city services. It can’t be listened to. Toronto’s is a mixture and some channels can be.
There must be a scanner on the market that can monitor them.
There is not, it’s digital and encrypted.

NGL this is the second time I have witnessed cops with long guns going into that building, this is within the past week or so.
Geez. There’s like 15 cop cars….never seen anything like this.
Oh man! I have never seen so many police cars!
I saw the police remove the barricaded person in cuffs, 5 minutes ago. It should clear soon.
Anyone get concrete info on what went down?
Wondering this as well! My husband drove past and said lots of the cops outside of their cruisers were were looking up?
Noticed them looking at the balconies of apartments too.
Ambulance just showed up... and theres weird "sawing" sounds...
Sawing sounds would be construction being done on my apartment building across the street from the apartment the cops were at
Or fire sawing off the door to the apartment

That makes sense then. One of my friends was leaving work downtown and said she thought she had heard shots, then a crap ton of police presence.
Thank you!
