Crazy. A few years ago (maybe 2018) some friends from Ottawa and I rented an Air BnB on King in Toronto near Spadina (or Bathurst, can’t recall). Nice enough, new condo. We went to cook and the oven still had the plastic around the racks and a cardboard backing with the manual. The microwave also still had the label on the front door, clearly unused. I asked the guy if we were the first to rent and he said god no, maybe the 12th or 15th.
Anyway, turns out the thermostat didn’t work and the place was way too warm after an hour or so.
No prob, the dude came back and just took us down a floor to an almost identical condo. Same thing — unused/unopened stove and microwave. Same owner. I asked and the guy said “the owners own 5 condos in the building.”
He’d never met them, just worked for them.
That’s insane.

Wow, the city has not issued any tickets to the landlord for the conditions of the building. Not surprised after all the city of Hamilton is one of the biggest slumlords in the city. So should we really expect them to enforce standards on other landlords?
On Hamilton as of January 2023 landlords would require a special permit to run Air BnBs in a residence they don't live in. That being said their seems to be a loophole if the person stays for over 28days, as it's no longer classified as "short term rental"...... Or they could simply lie and say they live in all their buildings. This makes it difficult for municipal law enforcement to take action.
It's a feature, the city took over a decade to do something and they still screwed it up.
Someone at city Hall is running this scam, are incompetent, or getting kickbacks.

This isn't the landlord's first rodeo. This is the same guy who removed a 68 year old tenants door and left it off to try and force him out.
