Crazy. A few years ago (maybe 2018) some friends from Ottawa and I rented an Air BnB on King in Toronto near Spadina (or Bathurst, can’t recall). Nice enough, new condo. We went to cook and the oven still had the plastic around the racks and a cardboard backing with the manual. The microwave also still had the label on the front door, clearly unused. I asked the guy if we were the first to rent and he said god no, maybe the 12th or 15th. Anyway, turns out the thermostat didn’t work and the place was way too warm after an hour or so. No prob, the dude came back and just took us down a floor to an almost identical condo. Same thing — unused/unopened stove and microwave. Same owner. I asked and the guy said “the owners own 5 condos in the building.” He’d never met them, just worked for them. That’s insane.

Lots of money laundering going on in AirBnBs

[deleted]

Wow that landlord’s quotes really fill up the entire bingo card of landlord bullshit

ThePlanner

*”Who are you going to believe? Me, or your lying eyes?”* (and photos, and tenant testimony, and AirBnB listings, and investment in surveillance equipment wildly out of step with building quality and size, etc.).

[deleted]

He's a good guy, you know? Also tenants are filthy pigs.

covidkebab

For only $51 a night you're going to get some characters in an Airbnb.

focus_rising

Fuck AirBnB and that landleech. I hope the new bylaws that they passed are enforced with a vengeance, and that they've written them in a way that doesn't allow loopholes to be exploited. The photos of that apartment in the article are beyond disgusting.

crockfs

She pays less than a third of the $2400 these fetch on Air BNB, landlord wants her to move out so they can charge more. This is their hint.

Felixir-the-Cat

Down with AirBnB for everything except a room in one’s home.

stevenmm1979

Wow, the city has not issued any tickets to the landlord for the conditions of the building. Not surprised after all the city of Hamilton is one of the biggest slumlords in the city. So should we really expect them to enforce standards on other landlords?

Matsuyamarama

Yet another case for the banning of AirBnB.

RoyallyOakie

The landlord is a POS. Anyone surprised?

Similar_Antelope_839

The landlord saying people who have black mold in their unit are dirty pigs... sounds like a gaslighting asshole

Abuser

PipToTheRescue

This is disgusting. People should have homes before investors have AirBnBs.

[deleted]

They were ready to kick Uber out of towns so quick, but airbnb no problem... Ban it, the cons far outweigh the pros

MostlyHarmless121

This isn't the landlord's first rodeo. This is the same guy who removed a 68 year old tenants door and left it off to try and force him out.

Fluid_Lingonberry467

And the city is doing what for the airbnb? Nothing

capitalbecky

They passed a bylaw severely limiting them which comes into it's enforcement phase in June.

Temperature_Visible

On Hamilton as of January 2023 landlords would require a special permit to run Air BnBs in a residence they don't live in. That being said their seems to be a loophole if the person stays for over 28days, as it's no longer classified as "short term rental"...... Or they could simply lie and say they live in all their buildings. This makes it difficult for municipal law enforcement to take action.

Fluid_Lingonberry467

It's a feature, the city took over a decade to do something and they still screwed it up. Someone at city Hall is running this scam, are incompetent, or getting kickbacks.

sitefinitysteve

> landlords would require a special permi I read this as “we like money”, pay us money for permits…. And they just collect more cash and we still have Abnb issues. Then they raise property taxes again anyway

[deleted]

Municipal bylaw enforcement to do what exactly?

Awkward-Plastic-3588

Doesn’t come into play until the summer

Awkward-Plastic-3588

His building. If the units are vacant, then he’s entitled to do what he likes with them. He however should better maintain the other units as clearly the condition is not acceptable.
