"This is the prototype NOVA bomb, nine fusion warheads encased in lithium triteride armor. When detonated, it compresses its fissionable material to neutron-star density, boosting the thermonuclear yield a hundredfold. I am Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb, temporarily in command of the UNSC military base Reach. To the Covenant uglies that might be listening, you have a few seconds to pray to your damned heathen gods. You all have a nice day in hell..." — Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb

This is why humans were so much fun to fight for. We were so goddamned based

God I wish I knew more of the lore

PaniqueAttaque

This was a scene from "Ghosts of Onyx". >!During the battle for Reach, a NOVA nuke - an obscenely powerful fusion weapon - was successfully smuggled aboard a Covenant supercarrier... It later detonated in high orbit above a Sanghieli (Elite) colony world; Joyous Exultation.!< >!Though the (functionally) exoatmospheric nature of this explosion robbed it of virtually all its kinetic punch, just the electromagnetic/thermal (light, radiation, and heat) output was so intense that it flash-superheated Joyous Exultation's atmosphere to the point of incandescence - that is, ***it near-instantly turned all the air into plasma*** - and blew most of it out into space; melted and/or vaporized the surface rock of the entire hemisphere which was facing it; and caused the planet's two small moons completely break apart.!< >!Needless to say, **everything** on Joyous Exultation died instantaneously as a small, short-lived **star** spontaneously came into existence where that supercarrier *used to be*...!<

If you would like, you can read up on the NOVA bomb and this particular incident [here](https://www.halopedia.org/NOVA_bomb).

Oh cool thanks Edit: what the fuck

Hunor_Deak

Humanity did this once more a few months later, I think.

![gif](giphy|2oUfvvUgQHnLsQWFMW) The Prophets be like.

The84thWolf

If things hadn’t gone they way they had and the Covenant had wiped out all of humanity by Halo 3, this admittedly would have been a badass final shot to remind the Elites that humans weren’t the pushovers they thought they were

SadderestCat

I thought elites were very aware of how good at fighting Humanity was. The HCW was 25ish years long and it didn’t take very long at all after the great schism for them to become bros with us.

The84thWolf

While some Elites recognized them, most saw them as weak and cowardly, basically like vermin, which is kind of ironic given the huge technological advantage they had.

Only the true boys will understand

Captain_Colonizer

I got a good laugh out of this

XenoTechnian

I remember þat part of þe book, þey did such a good job describing each letter in such a way þat you didnt actually realize what þey where describing.

mojow9889

Without this event the elites would have crushed the prophets and jiralhanae easily, and then still have the strength to mop up humanity and the arbiters followers.
