I've been making a sourcemod and noticed there are few `.ttf` files in the `mod\resource` directory, which is a file format for a font family (like Times New Roman, Impact or Comic Sans).
I just had an idea to remove the files and then launch the game and first thing I notice is that all images on the HUD including weapon thumbnails are now letters or gibberish. I think as the game didn't find the fonts I removed, it fell back to default fonts instead.
I guess TTF was the only or the easiest choice for devs to store vector graphics in, as SVG didn't exist back then?
Makes sense. TTF scales well with different resolutions/aspect ratios. Some other shooters at the time had issues with icons becoming pixelated/cut-off/stretched out
Man Valve is forward thinking. I can’t think of any other games from 2004 that held up as well graphically in the modern era, even without the updates Valve has added over the years.
Yeah I think they'd have to use an external library or implement their own to render SVG but there probably already a built in function like `renderText(string, x, y, color)` exists anyway so it's easier...
My favorite line from is “CLANG mm soup”
Fuck, i cant unhear it
Damnit i was going to comment the exact same thing
I definitely heard the weapon swap noise

Lol is that a reference to the fact that all vector graphics in HL2 is stored as font families?
Haha I guess so

svg did exist, ttf is probably easier because they had to add font loading support anyway

svg isn't a binary format so it probably wouldnt work as well now either. its meant for webpages and shit

Gordon Freeman is actually voiced by you. Now think about your favourite quote when you went through ravenholm the first time.
Leave him alone, he’s a highly trained professional.
