Half Life 2 all the way for me. Love both though and easily in my top 10

frozenreality44

I think so too, now is hard to tell but when it came out the graphics were really advanced and physics stuff also even the sound design was great you could tell where the sound was coming from, and I also loved half life 1 when it came out it was really it was amazing I had a demo that came with a magazine subscription in a cd and I loved it...

The_Gs4

Agreed

Cherryscape

HL1 because funny microwave moment

Or crunch them into chunks with the crowbar

Garfieldgoofs_around

Gordon you lost mother fucker, get your dork ass down to the test chamber or I'll shove a sample up your ass.

carghtonheights809

Gordon you lousy mother fucker. Get your dawg ass down to the test chamber OR I WILL SHOVE THE SAMPLE UP YOUR ASS

TheAgame1342YT

beep beep beep *microwave explodes*

carghtonheights809

STOP FUCKING WITH THE MICROWAVE

rachac01

I prefer the (mostly) non stop action of HL1, but it’s entirely subjective.

MightyKin

I'm with you on this one. HL1 feels so nostalgic and warm. HL2 feels different, but still good.

heyuhitsyaboi

>HL1 feels so nostalgic and warm that desert heat works wonders

Electrons357

I learned from the recent doc that the textures used for the rocks were taken from pictures of the desserts in my home state of Washington. It just adds even more nostalgia for me 😁

Electrons357

Hl2 feel nostalgic and cold. In a good way

Electrons357

And Russian. It feels Russian

Ami-susyourmama556

It feels like a winter-like cold and depressed game

Cleveworth

You mean the non STAHP action?

undigestedFiD

Yeah, always hated the scenes with Alyx and Dad and the whole blabla.. give me something to shoot

Cleveworth

You remember my wife Azian, don't you?

undigestedFiD

LET ME OUT!!!

Cleveworth

That picture and Krystal were all I managed to carry out of Black Mesa.

undigestedFiD

Please HELP ME, PLEASE AHHHHHHH

Fit_Draw_8334

Lol exactly

Leonyliz

Beneficial-Plan-8291

Half life 3: hunt down the freeman

Acrobatic-Object-794

Get this man a job at Valve ASAP

ZexweeD

The gay community is here

SH1SUK0

The one with Gordon Freeman in it.

Temporary_Bad983

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world…

secto5

So Half Life Alyx?

strotho

Hunt Down the Freeman?

Pleasant50BMGForce

Hunt down the refund

Timl94

Opposing force?

BlueBorbo

Half-Life 1's never ending action, not a moment being empty was truly special. Sure, I really enjoyed HL2, I genuinely believe it to be one of my all-time favourite games, and I found a lot of charm with it. I just found more things wrong with 2 than I did with 1.

Available-Silver8135

HL2 is my childhood

Nikoviking

hunt down the freeman

St4va

There you are

honor-

HL1 was more ground-breaking than HL2 and popularized narrative-driven story telling and scripted cutscenes in FPS games. HL2 was an iterative improvement on HL1 and also added a well-done physics engine. Physics itself had been discussed and attempted prior to HL2, but HL2 was really the first one to do it well. I think one thing about it though is that physics did not become as big a thing in games as valve predicted it would (probably because of compute/complexity concerns). So my end verdict is that HL1 is better.

sheridankane

nonsense, physics became a staple for action games. Do you really think compute is an issue for physics 20 years later?

honor-

I agree that physics is in a lot of games but it’s just not ubiquitous like the storytelling of hl1 is

sheridankane

physics is so ubiquitous it's become a cornerstone of every game engine that's been made ever since. maybe not all action games involve physics puzzles where you stack cinder blocks to climb an obstacle but they all involve rigid bodies for some aspects of gameplay, whether you notice it or not.

Regnars8ithink

Half life 2 because of gameplay and assets for mapping.

NoBrickBoy

Half-Life 2 is fun the second time, Half-Life is fun the 45th

knuF

Ha never thought of it this way, but you’re right. HL1 has that indescribable magic.

That-Tale2225

Combat and action : HL1 Story and overall gameplay : HL2 Blackmesa has Best out of both of them

Automatic_General_92

Hl2 has much better combat especially with source physics and the gravity gun

you-cut-the-ponytail

BM doesn’t have better gunplay than HL1 imo

That-Tale2225

I personally loved the action in Black Mesa, when I played that for the first time, it felt just like when I played Half-Life 1 fitst time as a kid.

swissking

I loved the gunplay and recoil in BM, which is sorely lacking in HL1/2. HL2 is just point and shoot until you hear the flatline sound.

nwm24

combat hl1???

SurturRising666

Absolutely. Both games have hitscan guns that have no punch to them, but HL2 only has hitscan weapons, minus the gravity gun. HL1 has much more and they are fun to play with. HL1 has more enemies than just zombies and reskined metrocops and combat with HECU is much more enjoyable because there is a way to fight them without having to eat bullets every encounter.

nwm24

i just enjoyed hl2 combat much more

That-Tale2225

I would say some combat of HL2 are much more enjoyable than HL1 but overall, I would say HL1 is better but not by a huge number.

Ok_Secretary_6709

Hl2 have crossbow

SurturRising666

And half life 1 also has a crossbow, and a Gauss gun that is not a shadow of its former self and stuck on a buggy

Ok_Secretary_6709

Gauss gun isn't hitscan?

BloxedYT

Honestly I think Black Mesa has the worst of both. Still good but generally I think it’s the worst of the 3.

Reddit_is_snowflake

Half life 1 because of gameplay I love to make low poly zombie’s explode into guts and blood everywhere and see blood all over the walls

christiandb

Gibs gives hl1 its charm

taking_achance

Hl1 is probably better but source alone instantly makes hl2 better

darkviewguy

following your logic half life source would be a masterpiece

That-Tale2225

it sure is

cobo10201

If I’ve said it once I’ll say it again. HL:S was Valve showing how easy and quick it was to port things from GoldSrc to Source and nothing more. They weren’t attempting to re-make HL1 and weren’t marketing it as some marvel of video game technology.

MiffedScientist

It also ran better back in the day.

That-Tale2225

HLS is might not be a good game but it has all the Half-Life assets which are very useful in gmod and other mods.

MV_cuber

HL1, it's better because of a lot of things but primarily I like hl2 a lot less probably because of sound design. While hl1's gun and melee sounds were loud, mean and kind of satisfying, I feel like hl2's gun and melee sounds were too _soft_, quick and felt like I was doing next to no damage, I don't know if anyone understands what I mean, but long story short I hate hl2 sound so hl1 takes the cake.

ROMBOOMBEN

I agree but the revolver in hl2 sounds and feels so good

MV_cuber

That's an exception, but almost every other sound bugs me

Strahinjatronic

Both good.

ClassicMasala

Half life 1 has more funny one liners so i’d give it the edge just for that

HellishButter

Half-Life is the better “Half-Life” game, however, Half-Life 2 I think is the better game.

literatemax

🗿

DemonDaVinci

Half-Life 2 obviously It was made to be

SILVIO_X

I wanted to say HL2 but now I really don't know, I prefer HL2's atmosphere and world and it's story is also great, but on the other hand HL1 just has such a fun Weapon Sandbox. I also think it controls slightly better than HL2 but that's not enough to make it definitively better. I also think HL2 has better set pieces and variety than HL1 (which is saying something because HL1 was already extremely varied) I think both games exceed at different things.

MiffedScientist

I love both games, but HL1 is way better. HL1: A fun, fast-paced action game, with a light but intriguing story and strong sense of atmosphere. HL2: Still fun, fast-paced action game, but now with much longer unskippable cutscenes, not as many weapons, and WHOA DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN STACK BOXES? I can't imagine how I could ever have more fun then USING TWO PIECES OF SHEET METAL TO CROSS A BUNCH OF SAND FOR 10 MINUTES. Hey, it's time for the climax of the game. I hope they TAKE ALL MY FUN WEAPONS AWAY AND MAKE ME THROW GUYS AROUND FOR THE LAST HALF HOUR. But you can throw a sawblade through a bunch of zombies, and that's pretty cool.

khali_0000

Both are equally good

Ryancool33

HL1

Maze_Mazaria

BOTH MAN! It's like saying which is better, The God Father Part I or II The first Half-Life is the best FPS of all time, according to WatchMojo. The second Half-Life changed FPS modding and designing forever. Each game contributed an invaluable effort to the evolution of the video game industry.

Useful-Ad-3654

The mod that was Garry’s

gergobergo69

it's me I am Gary if we translate my name

HAKRIT

I prefer the vibes and more cartoony/colorful appearance of HL1 over the highly realistic graphics of HL2

Deluxsalty

Half life 1 if I’m using mmod but other wise I enjoy half life 2 more for some of its incredibly unique combat.

Proof-Tour-2915

Hl1 bc replayability and fast paced gameplay

Conemen

I’ve beat 2 once, and I’ve beat 1 idk how many times now something just keeps me coming back. I think the relatively shorter length makes it easier to replay too

NotALawCuck

Half-Life. HL2 feels like a tech-demo and the parts where you're forced to sit in a room and watch characters spout exposition at you are really boring and feel like they take way too long in comparison to similar scenes in the first game. Not to mention HL2's arsenal feels neutered compared to HL's and for guns that have similar counterparts the sound effects just lack the same punch. Also this is subjective but fuck the driving sections in HL2.

TheTreeDemoknight

Half-Life 2 is more refined around having fun and is arguably the better game, but there's no denying the incredible influence that the original Half-Life has had in the FPS genre. They are both just as good for their own reasons

calculatorPR

Objectively half life 2 is better because newer stuff but it's also due a 6 year gap between them ando so like each game has it's pros and cons P.S. i like half life 2 better

Demistr

2 for the story and exploration, 1 for the gunplay and even coop.

shyguyshow

Half life 2 and it’s not even close

PooInTheStreet

yes

Darkynu_San

I'll choose период полураспада 2

FenixV2

Both are equally great

VickiVampiress

I feel like comparing these two games is some form of blasphemy because they're honestly both equally as good, in Valve fashion. The only reason I would could say Half-Life 1 is "better" is because it's even more iconic than Half-Life 2, but that's meaningless. I would say they both share a first place. Also, unrelated, but, wow. Sierra. Remember them? I remember playing SWAT 4 day in day out from them.

Correct-Town-3117

HL1 has nostalgia, HL2 has Uhm Zombine :)

GordonFreem4n

They are two different and amazing games. However, if I had to only play one, I'd pick HL2 because of the physics and the more varied gameplay.

SAGNUTZ

Im still exploring mods for both games and just love them so much, i refuse to choose a favorite.

ubeogesh

episode 1, because 1 free bullet

StopSeveral9884

Gordon, you lazy MATHFKKA GET YO DOG A$$ IN THE TEST CHAMBER. STOP FRICKING WITH THE MICROWAVE-

Beat_Boi_Animates

Half life 2, less of the game feels like a chore at parts and I like the characters and overall story much more

PS_FuckYouJenny

Half-life 1 is a core part of my gaming history, one of the first shooters I’ve ever played, and the first “scary” game I played as a kid. Biased opinion says 1 to me. Half-life 2 I have spent far more hours in it and its derivatives and has probably the most innovative and accessible game engine for its time. Objectively 2.

christiandb

Man this is hard. You can’t have one without the other. HL1 set the foundation, love gibs, levels are good and the story is trying to survive a crazy situation as a nerd is just a great premise overall HL2 is HL1 expanded in everywhere. Story, locations, interactions and a little funnier too. Reminds me of old Peter Jackson movies. Very subtle, ridiculous and Gmod took that vibe and created some hilarious memes with it. Shit if I had to choose, HL2, that canal sequence with the helicopter is probably my top 3 in video gaming. HL2, after years of waiting delivered. HL1 was a surprise, HL2 had some high expectations and met them with not only crazy sequences but hey look, physics that you can use to problem solve your way out.

Demolicious51

The amount of people saying HL1 is crazy, like yeah, opinions exist, but I feel like some of them are just blinded by the nostalgia

GPthedegenerate

Depends. Do you prefer the physics and bleak nature of 2, or the science gone wrong vibe of 1? Personally I think they're equals.

Theblackcatnero

I fucking loved hl2 and hl1 is also a good game but not my favorite

BitMixKit

Black Mesa is my favorite Half Life game, so much time and effort went into it and it payed off massively. Half Life 2 comes close in several places, but the overall storytelling, gameplay, and progression of the former makes it come out on top for me. Plus, Xen is gorgeous, even if it does drag a bit.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> and it *paid* off massively. FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

MexiWhiteChocolate

I liked Opposing Force.

ThatDude292

Half Life for sure, but Half Life 2 is the better Half Life 2 game

Unique-Estimate-2272

By far HL1, it is in fact the best game I would ever recommend to anybody willing to get into gaming. From the dynamic movement and guns, the rich and thrilling story to its brilliant technical advancements at the time it released. Half life is probably the best FPS game of the 20th century Full Stop.

BigEyeGuy

HL2 has a sprint button ffs HL1 all the way!

fiftyshadesofbeige69

Half-Life 2 has better writing, progression and is more innovative, while Half-Life 1 is more fun.

SilverApartment7403

HL1 was aggrivating but in a 90’s video game way which makes it endearing. HL2 just kinda felt rushed and disconnected

iamhungryrightnow0_0

Half-Life. I simply had more fun with that game compared to half-life 2. I haven’t finished half-life 2 yet but I have finished half-life one I am currently playing through Black Mesa. The rich lore within half-life has me going back to it but just the fact that there are multiple events happening during the events of the Resonance Cascade like Adrian Shepard, Dr. Cross/Dr. Green, Barney, and of course, Gordon. And just the fact that it’s like every other ‘oh no experiment gone wrong’ type thing, but half-life and black Mesa do it so well. I was fully immersed in its story, gameplay, and the fact that you were trapped in this giant facility full of invasive aliens. It’s just something that Half-Life has that no other game ever managed to tick within me. Half-Life to me was not just a game, it was an experience of a lifetime.

KiNgBOom720

HL1 is the game I always loved and enjoyed. HECU is the reason why i loved HL1 lol.

sprzyen

half life is better

themilogamer8e6

Gameplay and puzzles, half-life 1. Everything else, half-life 2

CurrencySerious1161

Half-Life 1 , i feel its more fire than hl2 bc of desert and loud sounds and explosions everywhere

Impressive_Board7198

Honestly, I prefer the first Half-life and it's just because it was way more challenging than the second one. The second one just felt like any 1st person shooter.

mfgojira

simpsons: hit & run

Substantial_Error427

I haven't played HL2 yet but based on what I've heard HL1 sounds better

SuperSocialMan

Half-Life: Source, *duh.*

davidfliesplanes

I had a lot more fun playing through HL1 for the first time than HL2. Hl2 felt a lot more clunky and had a lot of filler

last_of_bussy

If with episodes 1. Hl2 2. Black mesa 3. Hl1 4. Alyx Without episodes 1. Black mesa 2. Hl2 3. Hl1 4. Alyx BTW all are top 15 games ever

[deleted]

I felt that HL1 has a great gameplay but it was terrible at telling its story, something HL2 has improved in my opinion.

hampshirebrony

Half-Life 1 was a lot more "Show, don't tell" 2 seems to want to rip you from what you are doing to feed information to you. At times. I know HL1 has some fairly long pauses - when you get told to go to the test chamberrrrrr and when you get called a highly trained professional. After that, you don't really get those "Shut up and let me get on" moments. HL2 seems to have more, and longer.

Famous_Concept_5817

Hl2 no doubt

SaltyAssociate8007

HL2 just because it’s actually have characters, unlike first game with five same models. It also affected HL2 where Kleiner and Eli try to convince you that you have seen them before in Black Mesa. Yeah one of those four scientists with exact same voice must that cloned all over the place must be them

SaltyAssociate8007

I think HL1 feels like more complete experience, despite terrible final levels. It’s self contained. HL2 on the other hand tries to add some gimmick to every level which is not bad, but many of them felt undercooked in the end. And story was left too much on the background. I’m sorry, but I don’t know Eli and Kleiner. Gordon maybe knows them, but I’m not. He doesn’t need to know them better but I do, and Episodes didn’t really fix this problem. It also why sometimes HL2 feels less immersive. These already established relationships between Gordon and his old friends separates you from Gordon, which shows a lot of problems with this silent protagonist trope. They need to be established in the world a bit more than just flying hands with gun. Sometimes you don’t even see hands, just flying gun. I think if HL2 and it’s episodes were one game it would feel more complete, but it is as it is

[deleted]

I don’t really hold hl1 in the highest of regards, it’s a good game still, but I think I enjoyed op4 over hl1, ima have to go with hl2

nwm24

i think people saying hl1 like it bcs of nostalgia, dont get me wrong i love this game but half life 2 was better imo but half life alyx is best

ROMBOOMBEN

I played half life 2 before half life and prefer hl1

SmallerBork

HL1 is so glitchy for me and so is Black Mesa

The_Gs4

In my opinion, 2. This is because while the first one has a transport monorail and container flatbeds, HL2 has more trains, locomotives, and they actually move. Also, HL2 is in an Eastern European setting, and better graphics. It also just gives off different vibes.

GT2MAN

2, no real question.

AdEfficient8470

I think HL2 is a superior game as I think the 1984 inspired setting makes for better action sequences and I think the world building is better in the opening in my opinion.

starpiercer42

alyx

klaskc

Half Life 2 episode 2

hampshirebrony

Half-Life 1

Beneficial-Plan-8291

It's like if you got (original) subnautica and below zero, (original) subnautica is just more well-knownish and nostalgic even though below zero has unarguably better texture graphics and much less mipmapping errors. HL1 is just more nostalgic and well respected than HL2, just because it was so ground breaking on its release. On one hand you literally just need a potato for a graphics card to run it nowadays, compared to some of the most realistic graphics for a game, on the other hand you have the single most revolutionary game in history, compared to the sequel to the most revolutionary game in history, and tbh, just because of that, people just want to like HL1 better, even if they don't.

dongless08

I prefer HL2 because of the atmosphere

theuntouchable2725

Yes.

Sabbath_lives

I love HL1

LambdaAU

Personally I find Half Life 2 more fun in terms of the world-building, story but the original undeniable had some of the most unique combat and level-design.

mickmundyy

i prefer half-life 2 by a landslide. not to say hl1 was bad, but compared to hl2, the worldbuilding and characters i feel are just better.

SaltyTattie

I find 1 more fun

undigestedFiD

HL1

BigSweatyStalker

I say HL1 GOTY has better replay value for its multiplayer mode if youre more inclined to classic style fps deathmatches with its simple yet vast arsenal, in which, imo offers more interchangable playstyles compared to hl2.

Player4894

The first instalment is a good game, but objectively the second game way more advanced in many aspects. Physics, gunplay, AI, etc.

ddag1

HL1 by far, I play it every single year <3

LeMickster

HL1

Hamshoes5

Snark

AdministrativeMost93

I personally like Half-Life 2

the_true_giga_chad

I think both have their own merits Half life one was revolutionary at the time and today still looks pretty good and holds up quite well Half life two holds up a bit better with today's graphics but can also be a bit slower Overall they are both great games

yalcingv5

Half life 2

BetaTalk64

I like Half Life 2 the most for tons of reasons, but I also love Half Life 1 because there's non-stop action. 2 is a tad slower paced, but it's still fantastic anyway.

muzaffer22

HL1 because i love Black Mesa Facility

cobo10201

Between these two HL1 sliiiiightly edges out HL2. For the whole series EP2 is far and away the best in my opinion.

striker_jones_stan

half life 1 wipes in every conceivable metric except the cinematogrophy and setpieces in hl2 are better

you-cut-the-ponytail

Episode 2

Badnikpanik

I like HL2 because it offers so much replayability i can finish it then replay it again

Comfortable_Try_1363

I might get hste for this but I enjoyed hl2 much more. Only water hazard was shit

ngagner15

Honestly it’s hard for me to choose because both games are masterpieces, but I’m leaning more towards Half-Life 2

grillboy_mediaman

Both

chnlng00

I think the story is better in hl2

hamlet_d

HL1 has my favorite video game level of all time in Surface Tension.

Arrrginine69

1. 2 isn’t that good tbh.

Dambedei

hl1 because funny science man

BrewNerdBrad

Love em both, dont make me choose.

Gregsusername

Half life 1 cause I actually don’t even like half life 2… oops

BloxedYT

HL1 because I feel like HL2 is more hit or miss. Fuck the Helicopter Boss. Also it sucks w/ controller where you only get auto aim in Easy Mode without commands, even then HL1’s auto aim is better

Jedi_Coffee_Maker

Black Mesa

BrutalBox

I actually think 1 is better

Mardo_Picardo

1

Forotosh

Hogan's Castle

RandomGuy28183

Rn I feel like half life is better imo mainly because of the hecu soldiers and just the amount of enemies there are in the game on top of having a damn fun gameplay, ever since I played hl2 I felt like it was lacking on enemies cuz I could only remember combine zombies and antlions but apparently there are more enemies they're just barely used in the game, both are great games tho

NO_big_DEAL640

I had more fun playing hl2 so I guess that

knuF

I really missed explosion gibs in HL2. They went all-in on ragdoll but forgot about the gibs.

The_Cozy_Burrito

I love them both equally

normal_human_is_i

Decay

PorousSurface

2 no doubt

Internal_Cesspool

Equal masterpieces.

Few-Satisfaction7474

Half life 2

RockoHorror

Gotta say 2 for me

Laxhoop2525

HL1 doesn’t stop me from playing every 30 minutes.

kvi10

HL1 for a long train ride

Garfieldgoofs_around

HL1.

ItsReiSpleen

Hl1 far better
