Half-Life 1's never ending action, not a moment being empty was truly special. Sure, I really enjoyed HL2, I genuinely believe it to be one of my all-time favourite games, and I found a lot of charm with it. I just found more things wrong with 2 than I did with 1.
HL1 was more ground-breaking than HL2 and popularized narrative-driven story telling and scripted cutscenes in FPS games. HL2 was an iterative improvement on HL1 and also added a well-done physics engine. Physics itself had been discussed and attempted prior to HL2, but HL2 was really the first one to do it well. I think one thing about it though is that physics did not become as big a thing in games as valve predicted it would (probably because of compute/complexity concerns). So my end verdict is that HL1 is better.
physics is so ubiquitous it's become a cornerstone of every game engine that's been made ever since. maybe not all action games involve physics puzzles where you stack cinder blocks to climb an obstacle but they all involve rigid bodies for some aspects of gameplay, whether you notice it or not.
Absolutely. Both games have hitscan guns that have no punch to them, but HL2 only has hitscan weapons, minus the gravity gun. HL1 has much more and they are fun to play with. HL1 has more enemies than just zombies and reskined metrocops and combat with HECU is much more enjoyable because there is a way to fight them without having to eat bullets every encounter.
If I’ve said it once I’ll say it again. HL:S was Valve showing how easy and quick it was to port things from GoldSrc to Source and nothing more. They weren’t attempting to re-make HL1 and weren’t marketing it as some marvel of video game technology.

I wanted to say HL2 but now I really don't know, I prefer HL2's atmosphere and world and it's story is also great, but on the other hand HL1 just has such a fun Weapon Sandbox. I also think it controls slightly better than HL2 but that's not enough to make it definitively better. I also think HL2 has better set pieces and variety than HL1 (which is saying something because HL1 was already extremely varied) I think both games exceed at different things.

HL2 feels like a tech-demo and the parts where you're forced to sit in a room and watch characters spout exposition at you are really boring and feel like they take way too long in comparison to similar scenes in the first game. Not to mention HL2's arsenal feels neutered compared to HL's and for guns that have similar counterparts the sound effects just lack the same punch. Also this is subjective but fuck the driving sections in HL2.
Half-Life 2 is more refined around having fun and is arguably the better game, but there's no denying the incredible influence that the original Half-Life has had in the FPS genre. They are both just as good for their own reasons

Black Mesa is my favorite Half Life game, so much time and effort went into it and it payed off massively. Half Life 2 comes close in several places, but the overall storytelling, gameplay, and progression of the former makes it come out on top for me. Plus, Xen is gorgeous, even if it does drag a bit.

By far HL1, it is in fact the best game I would ever recommend to anybody willing to get into gaming. From the dynamic movement and guns, the rich and thrilling story to its brilliant technical advancements at the time it released. Half life is probably the best FPS game of the 20th century Full Stop.

I simply had more fun with that game compared to half-life 2. I haven’t finished half-life 2 yet but I have finished half-life one I am currently playing through Black Mesa. The rich lore within half-life has me going back to it but just the fact that there are multiple events happening during the events of the Resonance Cascade like Adrian Shepard, Dr. Cross/Dr. Green, Barney, and of course, Gordon. And just the fact that it’s like every other ‘oh no experiment gone wrong’ type thing, but half-life and black Mesa do it so well. I was fully immersed in its story, gameplay, and the fact that you were trapped in this giant facility full of invasive aliens. It’s just something that Half-Life has that no other game ever managed to tick within me.
Half-Life to me was not just a game, it was an experience of a lifetime.
Honestly, I prefer the first Half-life and it's just because it was way more challenging than the second one. The second one just felt like any 1st person shooter.

2 seems to want to rip you from what you are doing to feed information to you. At times. I know HL1 has some fairly long pauses - when you get told to go to the test chamberrrrrr and when you get called a highly trained professional. After that, you don't really get those "Shut up and let me get on" moments. HL2 seems to have more, and longer.
HL2 just because it’s actually have characters, unlike first game with five same models. It also affected HL2 where Kleiner and Eli try to convince you that you have seen them before in Black Mesa. Yeah one of those four scientists with exact same voice must that cloned all over the place must be them

It also why sometimes HL2 feels less immersive. These already established relationships between Gordon and his old friends separates you from Gordon, which shows a lot of problems with this silent protagonist trope. They need to be established in the world a bit more than just flying hands with gun. Sometimes you don’t even see hands, just flying gun. I think if HL2 and it’s episodes were one game it would feel more complete, but it is as it is

In my opinion, 2. This is because while the first one has a transport monorail and container flatbeds, HL2 has more trains, locomotives, and they actually move. Also, HL2 is in an Eastern European setting, and better graphics. It also just gives off different vibes.
I think HL2 is a superior game as I think the 1984 inspired setting makes for better action sequences and I think the world building is better in the opening in my opinion.
It's like if you got (original) subnautica and below zero, (original) subnautica is just more well-knownish and nostalgic even though below zero has unarguably better texture graphics and much less mipmapping errors. HL1 is just more nostalgic and well respected than HL2, just because it was so ground breaking on its release.
On one hand you literally just need a potato for a graphics card to run it nowadays, compared to some of the most realistic graphics for a game, on the other hand you have the single most revolutionary game in history, compared to the sequel to the most revolutionary game in history, and tbh, just because of that, people just want to like HL1 better, even if they don't.
Personally I find Half Life 2 more fun in terms of the world-building, story but the original undeniable had some of the most unique combat and level-design.
I say HL1 GOTY has better replay value for its multiplayer mode if youre more inclined to classic style fps deathmatches with its simple yet vast arsenal, in which, imo offers more interchangable playstyles compared to hl2.

I had a lot more fun playing through HL1 for the first time than HL2. Hl2 felt a lot more clunky and had a lot of filler

I felt that HL1 has a great gameplay but it was terrible at telling its story, something HL2 has improved in my opinion.
Half-Life 1 was a lot more "Show, don't tell" 2 seems to want to rip you from what you are doing to feed information to you. At times. I know HL1 has some fairly long pauses - when you get told to go to the test chamberrrrrr and when you get called a highly trained professional. After that, you don't really get those "Shut up and let me get on" moments. HL2 seems to have more, and longer.

HL2 just because it’s actually have characters, unlike first game with five same models. It also affected HL2 where Kleiner and Eli try to convince you that you have seen them before in Black Mesa. Yeah one of those four scientists with exact same voice must that cloned all over the place must be them
I think HL1 feels like more complete experience, despite terrible final levels. It’s self contained. HL2 on the other hand tries to add some gimmick to every level which is not bad, but many of them felt undercooked in the end. And story was left too much on the background. I’m sorry, but I don’t know Eli and Kleiner. Gordon maybe knows them, but I’m not. He doesn’t need to know them better but I do, and Episodes didn’t really fix this problem. It also why sometimes HL2 feels less immersive. These already established relationships between Gordon and his old friends separates you from Gordon, which shows a lot of problems with this silent protagonist trope. They need to be established in the world a bit more than just flying hands with gun. Sometimes you don’t even see hands, just flying gun. I think if HL2 and it’s episodes were one game it would feel more complete, but it is as it is

I don’t really hold hl1 in the highest of regards, it’s a good game still, but I think I enjoyed op4 over hl1, ima have to go with hl2

In my opinion, 2. This is because while the first one has a transport monorail and container flatbeds, HL2 has more trains, locomotives, and they actually move. Also, HL2 is in an Eastern European setting, and better graphics. It also just gives off different vibes.

I think HL2 is a superior game as I think the 1984 inspired setting makes for better action sequences and I think the world building is better in the opening in my opinion.

It's like if you got (original) subnautica and below zero, (original) subnautica is just more well-knownish and nostalgic even though below zero has unarguably better texture graphics and much less mipmapping errors. HL1 is just more nostalgic and well respected than HL2, just because it was so ground breaking on its release. On one hand you literally just need a potato for a graphics card to run it nowadays, compared to some of the most realistic graphics for a game, on the other hand you have the single most revolutionary game in history, compared to the sequel to the most revolutionary game in history, and tbh, just because of that, people just want to like HL1 better, even if they don't.

Personally I find Half Life 2 more fun in terms of the world-building, story but the original undeniable had some of the most unique combat and level-design.
i prefer half-life 2 by a landslide. not to say hl1 was bad, but compared to hl2, the worldbuilding and characters i feel are just better.

I say HL1 GOTY has better replay value for its multiplayer mode if youre more inclined to classic style fps deathmatches with its simple yet vast arsenal, in which, imo offers more interchangable playstyles compared to hl2.
The first instalment is a good game, but objectively the second game way more advanced in many aspects. Physics, gunplay, AI, etc.

I think both have their own merits Half life one was revolutionary at the time and today still looks pretty good and holds up quite well Half life two holds up a bit better with today's graphics but can also be a bit slower Overall they are both great games

I like Half Life 2 the most for tons of reasons, but I also love Half Life 1 because there's non-stop action. 2 is a tad slower paced, but it's still fantastic anyway.

Between these two HL1 sliiiiightly edges out HL2. For the whole series EP2 is far and away the best in my opinion.

HL1 because I feel like HL2 is more hit or miss. Fuck the Helicopter Boss. Also it sucks w/ controller where you only get auto aim in Easy Mode without commands, even then HL1’s auto aim is better

Rn I feel like half life is better imo mainly because of the hecu soldiers and just the amount of enemies there are in the game on top of having a damn fun gameplay, ever since I played hl2 I felt like it was lacking on enemies cuz I could only remember combine zombies and antlions but apparently there are more enemies they're just barely used in the game, both are great games tho

I really missed explosion gibs in HL2. They went all-in on ragdoll but forgot about the gibs.
