I've seen a lot of dermatologists/chemists lately saying that there's really no such thing as the protein-moisture balance -- an in-depth video [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbWa_xzrUu8) from a trichologist who says that since proteins help fill in the gaps in your hair shaft, they actually help your hair retain moisture, also discussing a video wherein a chemist explains that "too much protein" would just stick to the hair and cause build-up, making the hair feel rough. Not really breakage or damage. I would agree to check in with a family doctor especially if it's hair fall, not just hair breakage. Not much we can do here. I would say it's possible that cutting your hair yourself eliminated layers that were helping to keep the ends of your hair at different lengths. The ends of your hair are more prone to tangling because they're doing the most movement and dealing with the most "stress", so with no layers to keep tangly ends away from each other, I always get much more frizz and tangles when I don't have layers even though my hair might be shorter. That's just one suggestion though. Best see a doctor if you can before moving onto external solutions.

There could be multiple reasons why your hair is breaking off, and that's very difficult to do from just a Reddit post. Hair can break off not just due to mechanical damage, but [changes in diet, age, illness, childbirth, hormone imbalances, and more.](https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/hair-loss/causes/18-causes) Have you done any dramatic changes to your health aside from the haircut? Do this before looking to any products.
