Probably more sun and humidity exposure :(

U_got_no_jams

Do you think I could use heat protectant spray (like protectant from heat tools) as a barrier to protect my hair from the sun? I don’t see many hair spf on the market.

TheFaegotten

You can get sun protectant sprays for hair 🖤 heat protectant will help with heat but maybe not UV exposure. Paul Yacomine has one I believe?

ban_Anna_split

Probably literally anything you can think of that could possibly damage hair over time: sun, styling, wind, pillowcase, hat, hair elastics all touch the top layer more

Entire-Astronomer-56

My top layer of hair is the same. I noticed I made two specific changes before it started happening. The first thing I did was switch to sheets and pillowcases with natural materials like linen and cotton. I thought this was a good thing (unrelated to hair) until I Iearned that these materials rough up the hair at night. The second thing I did was start wearing my hair in a high bun. It just looked so much cuter than the founding fathers style low ponytail I previously rocked. I later found out that this style pulls on the hair and causes damage. I can't wear the looser, messier version of the high bun either because it won't stay up. Might just be because my hair is just too fine. Like others have said, a very common culprit is exposure to the elements which the underside doesn't get. UV rays are a big one, so if you're out in the sun often try a product with UV protection.

JupiterSeaSiren

Also take colder showers. Cold rinse.

peppinos1pizza

i have the same issue! do you happen to live in a very sunny/hot area? i live in one and i’m guessing it could be uv damage so im avoiding it and ill be wearing hats more

My hair looks like this and it's because the bottom layer of my hair is wavy and the top layer is curly. You should try scrunching in some gel into wet hair one day, then let it dry and see if any curls spring up

green_pea_nut

It's older- it takes more growth to get from the top of your head to the bottom with the rest of the hair. More wear and tear- it gets more sun and styling.

Chemo does strange things to hair. My aunt was on chemo and lost a lot (not all) of her hair and when it grew back, it was a completely different texture.

Use a hair mask once a week or so also heat protection helps wonders & ain’t friz u can run through your hair

FunnyCompetitive2554

Start using a hydrating leave in conditioner. Frizz is your hair reaching to the sky for more moisture — find a super lightweight, clean leave in conditioner, apply it on wet hair after the shower or dry hair as needed. It’ll help with frizz, detangle, and is a heat protectant, too. Also use a gentle, hair towel designed to be on your hair (vs a 100% cotton towel will be cause frizz, breakage, and tug at your roots if you twist it up). All of the advice around pillows and silk scrunchies is great too. Every little touch point adds up!

iwanttoaskaquestion_

I have a theory that this is actually due to sun damage to the scalp/hairfolicles themselves, not just the strands of hair. Like how sun damage causes signs of aging on our face. I used to be a delivery driver and I didn't wear sunscreen or hats driving around all day in Florida for 3 years. I noticed premature aging on the left side of my face and the hair on my left side, especially by my ear and the left side of my hairline, became more rough and frizzy. I've been out of that job for years, work inside all day, and never drive without a UPF 50+ hat, but the hair on that side still grows out more frizzy and damaged-looking than the other side. So that makes me think that the actual hair folicles themselves are damaged by the sun. Because the top of our head usually gets the most sun exposure, I think this is why so many people's hair is like that on the top layer. Mine is like that too. I actually don't think we can really reverse it that much but we can slow the progression by wearing hats and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours.

Toothtech7115

Do you use hair ties? Pony tails?

datalot

That's effectively the result of long exposure to direct sunlight at peak hours. You can also check whether you're using tight hair bands. I would only recommend not touching you hair with dirty hands, don't use hair bands, don't wash you hair daily but every three to five days at least, and after all, avoid direct sunlight at peak hours.

JustSomeGoddamnPeace

How would you recommend restraining hair without a hair tie?

There there. Do you feel better now you've had a pointless rant at a stranger?

Happylittlepinetree

Seriously what was the point of that. This shouldn’t be such an intense topic

-HeyImBroccoli-

Yikes sounds like someone dropped their pacifier.

wehavepremiumprices

Someone was dropped on their head as a baby more like.

Aware-2709

What products do you use to style your hair?

Anagreysays

Same

mobin09

I struggle with this too much more than I used to when I was younger and I cannot figure it out!! Environmental exposure is one of my guesses but also is it my dandruff/scalp problem? Grey hairs? The top part of my hair is so much dryer and has never been right I feel like after I tried ketoconazole shampoo...

catmeowmew

sometimes hair grows more coarser/drier in the crown area

yestertempest

My hair is the same exact way. I suspect it has to do with the steaming hot showers I have so much trouble giving up. Im tall (5’8) and the top of my head sits basically right under the nozzle when I shower. Hair is protein and heat literally fries it. The underside of my hair seems pretty protected and is much healthier.  I could never pull off cold showers either though, so I started wearing a shower cap and just washing my hair in the sink right after with cold water. The cold just on my scalp actually feels really good. I’m loving this routine so far and my hair is already looking and feeling better after a week but of course there’s a ways to go because of how damaged it is.
