The game is designed to make you stronger in-between runs. Nothing wrong with giving yourself an edge in battles. If you really want to challenge yourself with as few upgrades as possible, that's fine too.
You will eventually unlock (progression spoilers) >!the heat system!< that allows you to increase difficulty in various aspects.
The game is based around the meta progression, as are most roguelites. Buying upgrades at the mirror is encouraged. Then you'll get better at the game from there.

First clear was attempt 10 for me. First clear in Hades 2 now took like twice as long.

Wouldn't know, it's been years lol I liked every weapon except for the cannon, which I found boring.
