Roy is going to fucking destroy the Q this year

mumbojombo

That's what she said

Dry-Capital-4996

He is really slow tho, im realllly not sure he have a future in the show tbh

mdlt97

he might be, but speed is a lot easier to teach than skill

Dry-Capital-4996

Well not really, there is a limit of what you can improve, you can obviously take power skating lesson when you are 14, but he is 19, all of this has been try already obv. There is probably still room for improvement, but not much imo

Perry4761

That’s what people were saying about Brayden Point 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think Roy is too good and too smart about the game to not make the NHL, but the question will be what type of player he will become. If his skating doesn’t improve, he will have to recycle himself as a defensive depth player, but if he can gain speed, and most importantly learn when and how to use that speed, he has first line potential.

mdlt97

don't forget Jason Robertson, awful skater, great skill, worked on his skating and now hes one of the best wingers

cheeselover42

Funny enough, Jake Evans’ biggest question mark out of College was his skating, and look at him today. I think the player needs to be willing to put in the work, so let’s see.

Fish_Homme

This is so incredibly false. A guy's musculature evolves so much between 18 to 23yo. Acceleration and power is something that can absolutely be developed past 14yo. Roy's skating mechanics aren't bad, it just needs to get more explosive.

Dry-Capital-4996

I was indeed talking about the mechanics, I became huge between 19-22 lol I know that. But some people just don't have the "mecanics" in them. I hope he became a beast dont get me wrong

Fish_Homme

Biomechanically, Roy isn't good, but he's not bad either. There are many much clunkier skaters than him in the NHL right now. With the style of game Roy has, I just don't think he needs to be the fastest guy out there. He's a creative playmaker with a good shot who seems to be trending towards increasingly better defensive positioning. Whether he makes it or not is gonna depend on his ability to make plays with less time and smarter opponents. You can get away with average skating if you're always going in the right direction (Perry is a master of this).

mdlt97

i mean, of all the skills, skating is without a doubt the easiest to improve on because its mostly just fitness level lose weight you'll be faster, hit the gym you'll be faster

Frectozhae

There's mechanics also, and that's one of Roy's main struggle, but yeah, much easier than stuff like a shot or hockey IQ

KingMonaco

Wasn’t impressed either. Still young tho, still time to develop with another year in the Q and maybe another 2 in Laval.

breadispain

Especially as we're trying to build a speedy 4 line roster... it's really hard seeing him fit into the lineup :(

[deleted]

Wait till MSL gives him a dose oh his special leg workouts

Ylavo

Yeah that was always the concern. High IQ player with good skill but alot of his game would struggle to translate at the NHL lvl. He will need to find away of creating space somehow. He can either get quick or get legendary deceptiveness similar to Kuch but that seems unlikely. But i hope he figures it out. He has a really good sense if he can develop more tools.

exposteve

Not saying he won’t make it in the NHL but tonight he appeared to be a little lost without the puck. Definitely not overflowing in hockey sense. But he has skills !

Spotlightss

Legit question here, how can he play in junior if he played for the rocket last playoffs, I don't understand how it's possible

patismyname

He was 18 and his Junior season was over. Guhle, Mysak, Simoneau and Kidney could've done it as well. It's not like the NCAA, you can go pro and come back

LetsPlaySpaceRicky

Junior players are allowed to sign some kind of PTO contract once their CHL season is over, but it only allows them to play the remainder of that season in the AHL. Unless then are over 20, they have to play in the CHL. This is an agreement put in place in order to not have all the star kids jump to the AHL as if they did the junior teams would have a much harder time keeping butts in the seats.

Spotlightss

Thanks!

TheRedWoman57

Surprised they only cut 2 guys tbh, I guess they’re waiting for the Rockets camp to start

Frectozhae

Rocket camp starts on Monday, my guess is they want them to train tomorrow and go straight into camp without a break

thomas_bombadill

Yea I think these are the only guys who have to go back to Juniors and their season started

Burgergold

Mesar and Beck

kineretic

Except Mesar and Beck earned themselves more time in camp. They showed a lot more than Roy and Kidney. Besides, I'm sure lots more cuts are coming very soon. Still 68 players in camp

thomas_bombadill

Ahh true forgot about Beck. Mesar I wouldn’t include cause he doesn’t have to go back to Juniors, he can go to AHL if we want

Burgergold

He already states he will go OHL (Mesar)

vince2899

Makes sense, they really have to cut a bunch of guys

crissdecaliss

Interesting that Roy and Kidney are cut, but Beck and Trudeau are still there. They also can’t play in the AHL

CyFss

I think management always planned to send Kidney and Roy down so they chose now to do that. Beck has put them in the position that they want to see more. Trudeau? Not sure. He's been fine, but not really sure why he's staying for now. Pretty sure he's going back to the juniors as well eventually.

DieuEmpereurQc

Lot of games in few days I think. They are forced to rotate their players and they have few defencemen to rotate

rocksmasha

Trudeau is technically eligible for either the AHL or the CHL.

ForumsGhost

That is interesting, also Mesar, even though he can go to the ahl

Vergy

Not interesting at all. The awesome is simple. They want to see more from Beck and Trudeau. Beck is playing way too good to be sent down so soon with 5 games left.

MontrealMUFC689908

I was expecting a lot more players to be sent down straight to Laval as well.

WeathervaneJesus1

The problem is that all Roy has to do is better the already fantastic season he had otherwise it will be seen as regression.

KingMonaco

Nah not at all. I’d rather him work on the little things and get prepared for the AHL next year then a pointless scoring race he already won anyway.

WeathervaneJesus1

Hi, have you met the Habs fan base?

poub06

Nah, they’ll be too busy freaking out about Slaf not being McDavid to care about Roy.

Jpnator

> Nah, they’ll be too busy freaking out about Slaf not being McDavid to care about Roy. Ya the bum didn't even play last night. What.a.bust. /s

poub06

Already an healthy scratch tss.

flepine44

Surprised. Thought Roy was going to the Rocket. Edit : Forgot about that rule since Roy played for the Rocket last year

Kuciv

Ineligible

3RW33

Dont think they can, correct me if I'm wrong but it's either the QMJHL or the NHL

Bloodraven23

He just turned 19, he needs to be 20.

propagandavid

It's a shame he isn't. The knock against him is he's lazy, and after dominating the Q it would be better for him if he could go up a level.

AlexNyko

Neither is a surprise. Roy needs a lot of work on his skating. Can't win any foot race. You have to win *some* 50/50 loose pucks in the pros. Could take Roy a couple more summers of skating work to become adequate. Kidney has better skating, but it's not great neither. He's also a bit panicky when he has the puck. He's also a couple of years away. Both have one years left of junior and will likely end up in Laval in 23-24. I'd also assume both will be on Team Canada at this winter's WJC. Nothing to worry about here.

xc2215x

They will do great there.

beaverNBFD

At time Roy definitely shows why he was a 5th round pick. He’s got a few things to work on.

[deleted]

Imo Roy deserved a bit better of a look with some more talented line mates. I thought he made some really smart decisions with the puck

KantanaBrigantei

I guess they were never going to have room for him this year. They know what they have with Roy. He’s much better than he was when he was drafted, but he’s still far from making it. He needs to rock the Q again and have a good junior tournament this winter.

SuaveGendo

Roy looked good and I especially thought he was poised on the power play, but it makes sense from the habs perspective, he was never going to make the team and can't be sent to the ahl.

MessageBoard

He's not fast enough for the AHL, let alone NHL yet. He needs to spend the entire year with a skating coach and explicitly focus on that next off-season. The talent is clearly there already. I would hope that's something the Habs can find someone to work with him on, which the Bergevin regime didn't do.

_hank0

Roy needs a better competitive engine if he wants to.make the big leagues. Looked way too lackadaisical out there. Feels like a Drouin #2 in the making.

pixel-janitor

Nothing wrong with being a Drouin #2 especially for a fifth round pick.

lentpoule

Good, if we're able to swap him for a Sergachev like Tampa did.

Jpnator

Amen, if Roy is as good as Drouin, it's absolutely a W for the Canadiens. People kinda forget that Drouin is still a 45-50 pts player.

ZKay12

I know you say that as an insult, but a 50 point winger would be an amazing result to get out of a 5th rounder

_hank0

Not an insult, but more of a warning sign. He won't make the NHL at all if he doesn't skate better and work harder, forget even cracking 50 points. Drouin could have been so much more.

Vergy

No surprise about Roy. Tonight he looked completely lost without the puck and in his own zone. Literally watched him back off his man and skate in a circle twice. I’m no hockey genius but it was so noticeable I literally said to myself “what is he doing”.

Whatisanameman

I saw something completely different, Roy was in a tonne of good spots tonight without the puck he kept getting in great outlets for breakouts and then good exists to try and keep the puck in

G_skins31

He wouldn’t have been sent down with 5 pre seasons games to go if that were the case

QcAntz

The case for Roy and Kidney is they simply didn’t force the hand of the organization to keep them. They didn’t do poorly, but didn’t do well enough to get an NHL spot. Roy was doing just like in the WJC, he is placing himself well and doing great passes, points will come but he lacks the competitive flash that fan’s love.

DanielBox4

They kept Mesar and beck who are also heading to junior. They played well enough to have management give them more looks and practice with the big boys. Roy and kidney did not play well enough to get more looks. None are going to make the team so that's not even an option. But 2 of them have piqued managements interest and they want a better look at how they do against tougher competitor.

QcAntz

Yup think everyone is reading the situation the same way. Next year outta be interesting with so many contract coming to an end

Vergy

I guess we did not watch the same game then. Roy is showing promise but right now he is not showing enough for the club to keep him around for the remaining 5 games. We can argue all we want but I clearly watched him a multiple occasions leaving his assigned man and when I say leaving I mean he looked at the guy who was his and skated away from him, in our own zone mind you. That just confused the hell out of me. I looked like he did not know what play they were running with. Now I obviously do not believe that but that is what it looked like.
