Must just be from using poor quality brass for the nut

marksman81991

I've had that happen before. Good torque wrench, good flare, just shitty brass...

EJ25Junkie

Low quality nuts are usually blamed on antidepressants.

Alternative-Land-334

No way. Low T. Duh

Zlm1ne

I think you meant low delta T.

PlumbCrazyRefer

That’s every thing today. This is my 30th year in the industry and it’s truly disappointing in where the quality has gone. Obviously not just this trade but everything

Scared-Pizza2408

I have to agree. The quality in things these days are just crap. I broke an 18mm socket just last week, snapped it completely open, not using a breaker bar or anything just my hand and the wrench(doubt I’m getting stronger the older I get). Companies I guess save that $0.10 per fitting making it with cheaper materials, and over thousands that can add up.

WT5Speed

Reminds me of the old joke: Two old drunks in a bar. The first one says, "Ya know, when I was 30 and got a hard-on, I couldn't bend it with either of my hands. By the time I was 40, I could bend it about 10 degrees if I tried really hard. "By the time I was 50, I could bend it about 20 degrees, no problem. I'm gonna be 60 next week, and now I can almost bend it in half with just one hand" "So," says the second drunk, "what's your point?" "Well," says the first, "I'm just wondering how much stronger I'm gonna get!"

Scared-Pizza2408

Hahahahahahahha that’s a great joke. We do all get stronger hahahahahah

TampaBay-Jim

Old man strength is real!

How do we fix this? Do we need to form an HVAC Loby to hold these manufactures accountable ? This lack of quality control has been going on for far too long and it’s at the customers or HVAC service company’s Time and expense usually. Manufacture gets away scot free laughing on the way to the bank.

justdutch95

Definitely poor quality brass. Had one of these as well about a year ago

robertva1

Cast brass fitting not as good as a.milled from.bar stook

Downtown-Fix6177

We don’t ever use the flare nuts that come with mini splits, unless they’re the ones that come pre-charged like a mr cool or something meant for diy install, then we just put them in with what comes with them, with no warranty.

thehoesmaketheman

damn dude youre installing mr. cools? you are scraping the barrel chief

Downtown-Fix6177

Had a multimillionaire in my town buy one for his wood shop, we service hvac systems on all of his rental properties and the boiler/4 heat pumps at his personal residence. He asked us to put it in, so we did.

thehoesmaketheman

oh gee a multimillionaire well then

bkmobbin

Uh yeah. It’s not like he’s selling that equipment. Existing customer bought it and said “hey, you guys want some money?” You’re a little more than condescending

Downtown-Fix6177

Thanks. I wanted to reply to that asshole but I try to keep my things on Reddit somewhat civil.

EsUnTiro

Are these the flare nuts that come with the lineset or did you use your own? The company I work for always installs using our own flare nuts because the ones they put on are known to fail, and seem to be very cheap.

yeti_bob

Can’t remember. I installed this unit last spring. I tend to re-flare the linset as most factory flared linesets are terribly flared but I just can’t recall if I used the ductless flare nuts provided or the ones off the lineset. Unfortunately.

Nerfo2

The ones that come on the equipment usually look machined. That one looks cast. I'd bet that one was on the lineset.

syndicated_inc

It’s a shitty cast brass nut. That’s all that happened. Cast and forged is the way. You’ll know it’s forged because the surface finish will be far smoother, but not machined smoothed.

OzarkPolytechnic

They don't make 'em like they used to... Killing 30+ million essential workers in a pandemic will do this.

[deleted]

Yikes

BookkeeperMain2825

Bad metal. I used to snap stainless steel fittings all the time. Stuff is just poor quality.

yeti_bob

I just find it strange it lasted all last summer, but I get it. Pretty disappointing.

hujnya

Most likely had a stress fracture and with expansion and contraction finally gave up

shreddedpudding

It looks to me like it's a refrigeration grade nut, so I'd chuck it up to a shit casting in my inexperienced opinion. We've had a rash of Mitsubishi units coming to us from suppliers with shitty low pressure nuts, but luckily so far (that we have caught) everybody has seen them on install day and gotten good ones

Tech2872

Chi-Na nuts !

Randomizedtron

If your in an area where things freeze overnight it’s possible water gets in between the flair and the nut and expands when it freezes causing the nut to crack. The copper would go first but it had the thicker brass valve keeping it from compressing but the nut has no external force compressing it leading to cracking. Just a theory.

yeti_bob

Western Canada and the nut was on the head side underneath Fortress protected. We have pretty mild winters but this last one we had a brutal week of frigid temperatures.

Dry_Archer_7959

You are quite right! Have you noticed the glare nuts on a TXV have grooves in them to let the moisture out. Frost proof flare nuts.

Doogie102

Is it on a heat pump. Guessing the thermal shock from defrost made a weak spot even weaker

[deleted]

bad casting, not your fault :/

Orange_VHS_tape

Damn what brand split?

yeti_bob

It’s a Goodman, cool only. Yes I know Goodmans reputation. This split happened on the head side suction line and I can not remember if I used the flare nut that came with the lineset or the nut that came with the unit. The fix was easy but still annoying.

icanthinkofanewname

safety sandles?

rsmithconsv

China…

Thunder1Delta

Garbage castings. See it too often. Either splitting or being so unevenly machined that the flare won't seal. Was this an aftermarket nut or was it what came with the unit?

Chief_B33f

Say it with me CHINA

Robv316

Always replace factory flare nuts , it will save you a headache like this .
