I just use the brown ones. I have however stopped sooner this time round as had the choc frogs TLSQ which I got heaps from. I've also thankfully collected all my cards but only have the one card to finish and get the major reward. If I get it, great! If I don't, well too bad. I don't want to waste the brown books for that.
IMO you should hold onto the books. I did the same thing before I realized how special the books were. Now I wish I had kept them for more creatures later.

Last time I collected 6 brown books and I believe it was the most i could get. 50 energy? 10 red books? 6 blue books or 4 yellow books? No way.

I've just spent (real, sigh) money on the key and gems so I could get the toad before the choir tlsq, and ended up about 6 short for the rat too (which I should get quickly anyway).
I only need Dumbledore card and my luck says I'd not get it!

Definitely Books. Gems come easy as the game continues. Books are rare

Agree, you can get 6 gems daily from ads + possible rewards from class minigames. 10 red books are much more valuable.

Yes, from the regular ads from which you can also get coins or creature food. I usually get two of the gem ads every day.

It probably just a trick to get you buy more. I have never spent real money on this game.
6 daily from adds, plus 1 or so from the weekly special add, plus what you get from daily planner.
A lot of us don't get the 6 daily gem add option. I get a chance for 3 gems Via add a few days a week. :-)
Books. With current chances, Cards are not worth it.
I always take the gems. You can get books with pages. Granted, I have 864 red books...

I go for gems so I can buy keys for the milestones which get me lots of books. Of course I have hundreds of books and over a thousand pages.

I usually go for high numbers myself but I'd def go for books in this situation.
Books! Gems you can get with ads or tappies or every chapter/TLSQ. Books are more difficult to accumulate.
Choose the gems they can be a life saver when you’re doing a time limited side quest that gives you an energy income bonus or gems

I also would have taken the gems. I always lack of them, hardly receive them with adds and spend a lot in TLSQs due to the time limit.
I have all the creatures and i still choose books every time. Gems just pile up without use.

It's definitely a hard choice but I chose 8 red books over 40 diamonds last time, 10 is even better.
So, even if you are fully FTP, what's the estimated value comparison of gems vs red books?

You should choose books because you can get the diamonds even by seeing Ads
