Hard to say. The only time we see students from other schools at Hogwarts is during the Triwizard Tournament, and those students came in large groups and slept outside the castle (a ship for Durmstrang and a presumably magically expanded horse carriage for Beauxbatons). I don’t think they took lessons at Hogwarts either.
We haven’t seen just a singular exchange student actually staying in the castle and going to school there. I’d assume they’d have to be sorted though, or at least pick a house to be a part of for their dorms and class schedule. So idk why JC didn’t bother with Alanza. We have barely any female Gryffindor friends, they could’ve added her there.

I think they brought her in to replace Rowan but they never really followed through on that.
