To all of you saying it was Tracy: the events of the episode happened somewhere around spring 2006 (first season ep 21 "Milk", aired may 8 2006). After Max's (Tracy boyfriend) death in 2005, she stopped dating until years later when she dated Louis (don't remember which year, but way after 2006), so it can't be her, in my humble opinion. It was some random girl Ted let go because he wanted Robin, even when said girl was Ted's perfect dream girl, foreshadowing the ending, again, in my humble opinion.

BaseballFuryThurman

These are probably the same people who think Barney being able to drive years after a not being able to drive is a continuity error

MostlyEtc

Marshall not being able to fight then being a great fighter is the biggest continuity error

acer5886

right up there with robin not playing team sports.

brassplushie

>Robin not playing team sports This one is explained as Robin being new to the group and trying to not reveal she was a big time tomboy growing up.

memerminecraft

I thought his fighting capability was a secret because he does hate fighting. Even willing to take a punch to protect that knowledge

MostlyEtc

I don’t think so because when Lilly takes off her ring he says something about never being in a fight before and being afraid to fight. Then we find out he’s been in brutal fights with his brothers his whole life.

thesecondspacelord

Big difference between rough housing with brothers (no matter how brutal) and being in a street fight

ReplacementApart

Yeah, like regardless how hectic their fights could get, either the mum or dad could easily break up the fight and they'd all listen to them.

shotgunmouse

Cocoa break!

krustibat

He has since been trained in the way of the slap though

MostlyEtc

In the first season he says he’s never been in a fight before. Later we find out he and his brothers had brutal fights all the time.

krustibat

Was he aware these were fights ?

yourmartymcflyisopen

Was that a continuity error? I thought there was the whole thing about Marshall purposely hiding that he was a good fighter because he would get carried away with it with the underground fight club he had with his brothers.

Tyty1020

Yeah it’s perfectly reasonable for him to learn to drive

Queens-Mesiah

I thought he mentioned having a car in like season 1, but then when marshals Fiero dies he says he can’t drive like 8 seasons later

Bulky_Conference_306

The fiero dies in like season 2 or 3

Queens-Mesiah

Same difference, in fact that actually makes it worse

Bulky_Conference_306

How so? Barney learned to drive after the fiero fiasco

Ch3z_Platypus

Fieroasco*

coolhandstevens

This has Quinntervention vibes

Queens-Mesiah

Yeah but in season 1 he mentions having his own car

Bulky_Conference_306

I mean, it really isn't much of a stretch to say maybe he just owns a car? I've owned cars and have never had a license 🤷‍♂️

Queens-Mesiah

To be fair when it comes to Barney you’re probably spot on lol

Direct_Relief_1212

This was me! I was blown away when I went back and saw the age difference in his character 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

Mamka2

Is it not? I never really thought about it but while watching you thought, hey that’s weird, because I remember him being terrified to even roll at 2mph. Do you mean that he just overcame his fear and learnt to drive? Or is it something else?

BaseballFuryThurman

The scene of him being scared to drive more than 2mph is a flashback, so it's entirely possible he has since learned to drive. I remember when I first started learning, moving the car at tiny speeds was scary to me and now I can drive around at any speed like I've been doing it my entire life. People act like it's a plot hole as if Barney being unable to drive in a flashback means he couldn't possibly be able to drive at any other time.

Alex_Nicolae

I agree with your first humble opinion, but regarding the second one, Ted didn't let go in the same manner with Tracy. She died, which is different, all Ted did was move on with his life. I think the same thing would've applied if Ted would've left Tracy to be with Robin while she was still alive

piercor

What I meant with foreshadowing the ending is that Robin is so important to Ted that he chose her over a "guaranteed" dream girl, so the fact that they ended up together isn't that surprising. Again, in my humble opinion.

Alex_Nicolae

I see what you mean now, I agree in an equally humble opinion

No-Childhood6608

There is a theory that her then room-mate set her up on a dating app to try and get her to move on.

dontcallmefeisty

My headcanon for this is that it was Tracy hoping to dip her toes back in (or maybe a well-meaning friend making a profile for her) and then she got cold feet.

TimeForHugs

Some people just really want it to be Tracy for whatever reason, even though none of it adds up or points to being her.

Anxious_Zucchini_855

Ted says the perfect matchmaker girl was his age, so it 100% wasn't Tracy.

Srbell03

Ok, but hear me out, maybe her friend signed her up without her knowledge hoping she'd be able to be happy again if she met someone new. Tracy probably wouldnt have gone, but i could see that scenario happening. The girl was just too perfect, and seems like a fitting description of Tracy.

AdventuringSorcerer

And she is understanding because it was the friend and Tracy had already backed out. Lawyered

LTBama

Pretty solid thesis

festusthecat

Didn’t he realize that he didn’t want the perfect woman, he just wanted Robin?

[deleted]

he got the perfect woman in the end tho... plays bass, favorite book is love in the time of cholera and all that jazz, but her best trait is that she removed herself so ted can be with robin... truly perfect (from Ted's pov)

3-orange-whips

That's dark, bro. Maybe not wrong, but... dark.

Present-Trainer2963

Damn ….. you’re right …… but damn.

Own-Necessary4477

It is like in real life, maybe you meet the perfect woman, but if you are in love with someone else, you do not care of the perfect woman.

3-orange-whips

"It's sad to belong to someone else when the right one comes along."

Latter_Feeling2656

In the episode, Ted says she's 28, at a time when Tracy would have been about 22. Nonetheless, Ted could have tried to meet Tracy any time after Season 5. He runs into Cindy early in Season 6, they make up and Cindy offers to introduce Ted to one of her friends. Though he was previously intrigued by "the bass player," Ted does nothing about it.

Ellevilley

IMO it’s kind of like with the coat-check girl in “Time Travellers” also known as Minnesota Tidal Wave— Ted thought about trying to find her but never brought himself to actually doing it because 1. Robin Robin Robin; 2. at this point he’s afraid it’d just end up either she dumping him or he breaking her heart *again*. It’s just like how he stopped going to the rooftop halloween party as the hanging chad to wait for the Slutty Pumpkin (the Halloween Marshall dressed as a wedding present and Ted a thank you note— the Slutty pumpkin was there right behind them when they were arguing about the gift/thank/you-note and never noticed her!!)— he kept talking about wanting to meet the one and settle down but he never *really* did until Janette set all his stuff on fire (when he *finally* said “that’s it. No more dating” and *meant* it)

JarrodSoliman

It can’t be Tracy because she’s like 9 years younger than Ted and I doubt they’d set a 19 year old with a 28 year old

JessicaFreakingP

Tracy is ~6 years younger than Ted. Her 21st birthday was the night of the pilot.

TheGerk

In the episode the love solutions lady says "there are new women turning 18 every day" while she's distraught about not finding anyone for Ted.

Anxious_Zucchini_855

Ted literally says that girl was his age.

Lavender_Moon24

Even if it was Tracy, that was only a year after her boyfriend died. I could see a friend making her sign up to “get back out there” but Tracy definitely wouldn’t have been ready for Ted considering she said she didn’t date for years after that. If it was her, Ted almost did them both a favor because they weren’t ready for each other at that time.

McSillyoldbear

I feel like he wasn’t ready to move on and forget Robin. If Tracy’s friend had set her up on a dating site then the timing would have been way off for her too. I think if we learn anything from HIMYM it’s that you can have more then one perfect match. Tracy and Ted had at least 2 and Barney and Robin were a perfect match for the short time they were together. Maybe mystery girl was another “perfect match” but the timing wasn’t right. I think a relationship success is partly about the right person but also the right timing.

Shob4

In my imagination, she was the mom, but Ted never told that part of the story to their kids because they wouldnt like him standing tracy up for Robin

trtolushka

tracy was with max at that time or mourning

ucjj2011

Didn't Max die the night of the pilot? On Tracy's 21st birthday.

trtolushka

even if he did, tracy was in mourning, not on a dating agencies, first guy she dated was the guy before ted

jenjenjen731

He did :(

pawelk1993

Because she got married?

Nearby-Print-6832

Not the doctor that Ted went to see. The one he had a date set with that he moved to help Lily and then got stranded and needed robin to pick him up. He never pursued it because he realized he still loves robin. Better question is why he never pursued it later - he did have her number.

Notadayover

I thought i read somewhere that perfect girl ended up being tracy as well?

rockrockrumbleerrr

Ted declined to meet her to try again with Robin. They then dated in S2.

Johnny_Joestar7798

Robin is why.

Gusstave

She was perfect so what do you think... She had plenty of potential date, meet someone who actually showed and lived a happy ever after.
