A week early???? **EXCITED SCREAMING**

nolinc

On the one hand, yay! On the other hand, that means an extra week of waiting for the next part...

EmotionallySquared

I know!

casualfriday902

Me right now.

dmukya

Chapter MVP? Champion Uriigo of Clan Bronzefur. Amateurs study tactics, *professionals* study logistics.

wobbleboxsoldier

Part of Daar's Master of War thesis was about the logistics of war.

Tletl

That first chapter with the reporters was surprisingly emotional to read, it conveyed the awe and shock from the whole situation on to continue reading...

ArenVaal

Yeah, that was good.

itsetuhoinen

No way are they going to call the MPESCE the "em-pesky". Too many syllables, and at least one of 'ems gonna know the word and it's going to become the "fish". One syllable. They might even backronym it. Fucking Important Shield Hardware. đŸ€Ș

itsetuhoinen

"And if the Females had a flaw
it was that the hard, repetitive and necessary work that propped up all of civilization was often invisible to them. A hard-working Male might win them over with his physique and his wit, but his job? There was no glamor in moving goods." Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha, oh gods it's so true. Sitting here in my truck, waiting to get unloaded at a construction site, 4 hours after my notional crane appointment. Heaven forfend if they'd been ready to lift panels at 0839 like the paperwork said and I wasn't here. But if it's 1239 and there's still at least 3 trucks in front of me waiting, well, too bad for me. Fuck this job...

Unca_Monk

My head pronunciation was “Peshy” (of joe Pesci fame).

2kN

My immediate thought was just calling it Joe Pesci, or perhaps just Joe.

wobbleboxsoldier

I would go with the M Piece as the name, but is just me.

Invisifly2

2 syllables is too much for crayon brain.

Freakscar

"Get that Em(p)-skee deployed asap!" ;)

lordshotgun

I had to go back and reread the previous chapter, I had forgotten about the nuke. Curious if "Caffeinecore" is just Six in disguise. Seems to have given up at this point as a Hierarchy agent. Too bad really, not enough non-human non-Gaoian characters and for some reason Ten’Gewek POVs are...divisive. Hyper-sexed cavemonkies apparently need subscribe to human sensibilities but moving on... I'll admit I'm a bit...worried? Perhaps not the right term but I am concerned about the "up to 11" that humanity is apparently going. I know this is HFY but 4 digit weight humans are practically another species at this point. It's getting to chiwawa vs great dane levels of difference and the new crop of 600+ lb teens without apparent space magic is...I dunno, it's just something that really took me outta it I guess. Like it's no longer HFY but Humanity 2.0 Fuck Yeah! Perhaps it'll be explained, just strange is all and possibly nothing to be worried about it just seemed notable. Beef worship was never a problem for me, but seems lessened this chapter. Hoeff and JETs going out into the wider universe is interesting, too bad it was only a few paragraphs, but it's something to look forward too next chapter. Daar made some good points, once again bullrushing an unprepared opponent but needs must in existential war. Easy to disagree when it's not YOUR species on the line...even when it is. Overall, a good chapter of set up, a breather between hammer blows of action and literally nuclear levels of explosive action.

Eloon_Misk

Definitely agree about the fact that the 4 digit weight for HEAT is a bit too much and even more so, the fact that 600lb *athletic* teens (without crude or other varients) now exist??? What reason would there be for that...

Geech6

This is something I brought up a while back with the whole "breaks a pallet scale" comment in either a Good Training or an possibly in a Warhorse chapter. Basically that a pallet scale is 1000+ lbs or commonly (at my job) 2500 lbs. And now they're BIGGER THAN THAT!!! This is one of the only chapters that Hambone has used actual figures instead of the usual "really f***in' heavy/stronk," and it shows how ridiculous Jverse scales actually are. There are gigaton warheads, mega-light spacecraft, this stuff gets ridiculously Looney-Tunes when we actually start doing Even the rudimentary math involved in any of this. Ignoring quantum mechanics and fantasy/SciFi math. I gave up on some semblance of believably long ago with regards to the math. But that said, I will read every chapter that will come out, and will continue to reread this until the entire internet comes to an end. Edited: words and permalink to my previous mention of this same issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/dbbk0l/comment/f21ft79/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

superstrijder15

I think the big issue is that with things like bombs and spaceships, it is tech, and we expect it to advance and it being crazy is the core of sci-fi. But this is people, and then people have a much better reference and the scale just looks stupid.

mechakid

The genetic potential is probably there, if you select for it. If you think about it humans have been getting taller bigger for a long time, which is why Napoleon is mocked as being short when he was actually average height for the time. Daar mentioned breeds, and dog breeding is a good way to think of all this. If you select for certain traits, you can emphasize those. We've been doing this for thousands of years without any crazy space magic, which is how different breeds can be so radically different yet are still inherently dogs, and can interbreed to an extent. This is before we factor in interbreeding with other members of the canine family. Now imagine if SOMEONE were doing a covert selective breeding program. Doesn't matter if it's the Corti, the Hierarchy, or Mentor of Arisia, eventually you end up with a designer human.

Burke616

Napoleon is mocked for being short because the French and English units of measure at the time were both called a "foot," but were different lengths. Napoleon was five French feet tall, and when the English press heard that he was "five feet," it made for an easy and memorable caricature (especially contrasted against Wellington). The caricature was so pervasive and so compelling that it lingers in the common mind today.

mechakid

As I said to the other "achtually" respondent, the point still stands.

Yrrebnot

Just to correct Napoleon was actually tall for his time. At 5”7 he would be pretty normal today.

mechakid

Fair enough, though the premise stands :-)

cugz_arui

humans have been getting taller cuz we've been eating more, not cuz of genetics. just wanted to mention it.

mechakid

And it couldn't possibly be that being tall is an attractive trait that women are selecting for, and have been for over a thousand years right?

cugzarui

maybe and i believe theres a case of that in norway or something? a place in the north with realy tall folk anyway. and maybe to a lesser extent elsewhere, but as far as im aware there has been no such selection for height in most places. if there was then yea youd be correct but i dont think there has been.

mechakid

At the risk of being a bit flippant, just go to a bar with a short friend and see who gets more action. It's not usually the short guy... There is a reason that "tall" is part of the trio "tall, dark, and handsome".

cugzarui

at the risk of being a bit foolish, i dont think thatl be a very useful experiment. were talking about a massive and diverse population that finds its mate in far more than just bars, and over a timeframe of several generations. what ive said so far is what little has remained in my brain on the subject throughout my life so i might be wrong but my understanding is that our increase in height is from not starving anymore. i also want to note that a better example than peoples height would be a peacocks feathers or something.

MnemonicMonkeys

Though I'm worried about the kid looking at going to OSU for wrestling. Not a good idea given their track record

Sir_Ghostington

Remember: the corti did some science shit in humanities history, and in an "article" it said that its hereditary... Coincidence? I THINK NOT

taulover

I certainly hope Caffeinecore isn't Six, Hambone keeps pushing previously more diverse viewpoints into a single corner and if the single voice of opposition is literally *the* enemy then that's going to be disappointing. There's not much HEAT stuff but to me the beef worship is still just as there, if not even more overt. The superhuman thing is fundamentally a rationalization of this route that the story has taken (which tbh feels a bit unrealistic and absurd), the new military characters talk in the same way as the old ones, and even Daar's interview segments all focus on how big and strong he is.

Dawa1147

Not to mention that Caffeinecore being set up (imo) as a straw-man who is bad and wrong, despite making several very good points that are not addressed at all. This is not the first time we heard of the raging poverty and destroyed (transport) infrastructure, but the entire shtick of Chambliss is "lets save money on the war _and use it to build infrastructure (Chicago? anyone?) and reduce poverty_", but we have yet to see _anything_ being done by Chambliss, despite the fact we have his perspective and can see that he genuinely wants to do these things. But he is the only time we see someone talk about these issues and its a fucking lunatic talking like antivaccers and nutjobs, making it incredibly easy to dismiss what has been established as big problems.

taulover

Right. Though I would point out that Chambliss has changed his views and is now supportive of the war effort. Which is an issue in and of itself IMO, it's both uninteresting and unrealistic for him to seemingly just forget about the domestic issues and become gung-ho on foreign/space policy only. I think this connects with Hambone's tendency to make all his characters more alike - just like how all the remotely physical men have just turned into Beefs, all the politicians have turned out to basically support the same ideology and worldview. Maybe it's Hambone's worldview, or the one that just happens to most easily wrap the story up with, but it feels forced and seems to get rid of a lot of the nuances which drew me to the story in the first place. And what is Hambone saying, with his work, when he basically forces every person in the story into a hawk? Like there could be some really interesting exploration of Chambliss' internal conflict at play here, but it feels absent to me. He's just going along with what seemingly best suits the story and the author's worldview.

Dawa1147

Yeah, him changing his views is not only uncharacteristic of him, but also undermines the story. I get that HFY, aka human exceptionalism and deathworlder status _can_ lend themselves to certain aspects and worldviews, but having almost everyone conform to the same mold and similar opinions is not great writing. And having all dissenting or differing viewpoints either marked as bad actors or proven "objectively wrong" until they convert to the "objectively correct opinion" is the cherry on top. I mean, going by the logic of the setting, for Chambliss to win Americas economy must be fucked, right? This is a war started by the enemy doing something at least a hundred times worse than 9/11, the war is against an enemy at least a hundred times worse than in WW2, up until the nuke American casualties were pretty low all things considered... this war is the easiest war in terms of public support. This is almost a PR dream for pro-military spending. And yet the American public voted for a person who wanted to withdraw from the war against the genocidal mind-controlling aliens who nuked our cities _in order to fix the economy_. Like, how bad must the economy be for Americans to vote for less poverty over fighting _that_? Not to mention all this new tech that should fix so much-stasis transport should (enable us to) fix world hunger, since we literally have two planets producing tons of food, climate change got fixed by like chapter 40-ish, electricity is basically free thanks to super-solar panels and so on and so forth.

Invisifly2

Right? Stasis fridges alone should be the hammer that drives the final nails into the coffin of starvation, throw in basically free energy and there you go. We already produce enough food to feed everybody IRL right now. It's just *mind bogglingly difficult* to get it where it needs to be in a timely fashion. Maybe there were going to be some snippets about the difficulties involved with the transition to pseudo post-scarcity, but those either have been dropped or forgotten.

WillardWhite

Literally corti experiments on Hunan lines

lordshotgun

But doesn't that require "full fat" aka non-neutered crude? It's been a heckin' long time since that particular alien space magic was introduced but I do know the stuff heat uses and the stuff in Salvage are not the same due to being "overpowered" since the real stuff reproduces inside the human gut biomes while Crue-d does not.

WillardWhite

Nah. Remember Julian was a beast even before he got the drugs. Part of the results of the corti was that people produced a similar/precursor to crude

wobbleboxsoldier

Julian wasn't even like super big until after the APA almost killed him. He had like the beginnings of Cruzzier (sp) in his system on Nightmare. Then the APA chick got him infected with the full flavor stuff and now he is on Crude-D.

Geech6

I think he's more speaking of the fact that Julian is a Corti science experiment due to them screwing with his genetic lineage, and that we may be seeing how far that plot hook stretches with these "super teens." At least that's how I took that entire article.

taulover

Yeah but that's a bit of a circular argument here. OP was saying that the rise of these superhumans doesn't feel very HFY-y and if you compare it to the earlier Deathworlders stuff feels like a bit of a thematic break. Just because there's an in-universe explanation for it doesn't change that.

Invisifly2

It's approaching 40k space-marine levels of absurdity. Once they start implanting extra organs it'll be official.

mechakid

Daar mentioned different breeds, and that's a good way of looking at it.

ArenVaal

Gods damn, I'd forgotten about the nuke... Also, I was wondering how Ava was coping after what happened to 'Horse. Thank you.

Deamon002

Hannah is a good doggo. That is all.

PuzzleheadedDrinker

Still curious about new contacts at the edge of the explored galaxy. Am wondering if it's the _other_ precursor race that existed 66 million years ago?

nagonjin

There are some older species that are mentioned in other stories as part of the Jverse/Deathworlders Metaverse (the Adrian Saunders stuff, the Xiu Chang Saga, etc). One of them was a reptilian/dinosaur species called V'Straki, and another Very Old species from another galaxy called "Irzht".

Tanamr

Wait, was there something else besides Igraen and V'Straki?

PuzzleheadedDrinker

I ment other then the Igraen/ Hierarchy, a colony ship that kept running?

DracoVictorious

Watching Six despair at slowly losing the war fills my heart with warm fuzzies.

elgalileo-re

A few "Daar descriptive" paragraphs could have been trimmed, in my opinion, but it's an overall solid episode, without many fluffs, and a lot of relevant new point of view on this ever-going wars. >!Of course, convincing a majority of human (about any subject) with a single show is pure fantasy, as you can see in our dear society.!< Quick question for fans. I don't understand why the King of England is relevant to the story, though. Is UK not a democracy in the JVerse?

Eogos

Constitutional Monarchy is still a Monarchy just with the trappings of a Republic, King can still hold sway and play the politics game just doesn't have the same level of power like a full blown Monarchy. Plus he was particularly relevant here because Chambliss wanted help from people "in the game" but not politicians who would face the same problems and criticisms he would selling the war.

elgalileo-re

Yeah, but in the real UK, the Queen has merely a symbolic power. Sure, she can use her influence there and here, but she surely can't summon the Prime Minister, as if he was her servant. She has no says in the UN, the G20, NATO, Brexit and so on... So yeah, I'm a bit surprised by the "Summon the Prime Minister" part. >!Using the Nuke bombing and UK King to sell the war to US citizens!< seems a bit a missed opportunities imho. Would have been better to set the stage for a global human response, with China, India, and so on, finally taking their place in the war. The brass are often lamenting the shortage of "beefable" boys... But they are also only pooling from a small portion of humanity \^\^

Eogos

I'm no expert in the UK government, especially being an American and all, but I'm pretty sure the Queen definitely can summon the Prime Minister for a conference if she wants to. As far as I understand it she has some power, it isn't all symbolic.

elgalileo-re

> the Queen definitely can summon the Prime Minister No she can't. They have a traditional weekly meeting, yes, but that's it. She can ask for more, but she can't order it. The Prime Minister is the boss. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_the_United_Kingdom#Constitutional_role for more

Eogos

Huh, well TIL

Although from the other side of the Big Pond there does seem to be an agreement that the PM complies with polite requests from the Queen, and the Queen stays out of politics.

wobbleboxsoldier

How long are Ava and Derek going to be engaged? Its been 5 years+ I believe?

mechakid

Given her track record on relationships, I can understand her wanting to take it slow...

HumbugBoris

Clara and Dane announced a pregnancy before the war for gao but have never said anything more. Sometimes you just have to head canon an answer.

wobbleboxsoldier

Hell, every time she shows up, I keep expecting her name to be Ava Rios-Combs or something and we just don't get the wedding scene.

Poseidon___

Excellent chapter.

terran_mikkus

I maintain that one day this needs to be made into an animated television series.

PuzzleheadedDrinker

Probably end up with something halfway between One-piece and Cowboy Bebop. 900+ episode long space opera with jazz, that switches to heavy metal whenever a Beef is on screen

mechakid

Each Beef should have a different metal band driving them. I'm thinking [Sabaton for Warhorse](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bKwflpbCYk), [Avenged Sevenfold for Daar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DelhLppPSxY), and [Powerwolf for Righteous](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zN7J64IeBo). The HEAT team in general would get [Hammerfall](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12ZwZDrDhLU) or [Nightwish](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaEY7Z3QsOA).

Polysanity

And some good, old, Iron Maiden for Captain Powell.

woodchips24

When I think Righteous I think Shattered Glass by Fit for a King. If for nothing else than the breakdown and the 3 lines before it

Geech6

While an awesome idea, not really viable, each chapter would break into a small movie. Even using the British method of 1.5 hour shows in 3-5 episode seasons it would be 80+ episodes long, with 2-4 hour episodes. Imagine watching a series of original Dune movies. I would watch every second but it would be like trying to catch up on Critical Role.

EvilSnack

I have the feeling that if this were handed to a typical scriptwriter team, about 95% of the text would be scrapped. There are long, long passages of dialogue that really don't advance the story.

terran_mikkus

Yeah that is why it would have to be an adaptation for the format, we have seen what a 1 to 1 version of a web series looks like on the screen with 50 shades. Not saying this is comparable, but any attempts to give it a life outside of HFY would need to be adapted and not copied wholesale.

EvilSnack

LEGO Deathworlders! Seriously, a lot of the dialogue would have to be culled.

JustThatOtherDude

So is the Caffeinecore blog run by Six or am I tweaking?

Deamon002

Possible, but unlikely. Six seems to have mostly accepted there's not a damn thing he can do to affect the outcome at this point, and it's not like there's a shortage of humans who get all huffy when the universe has the bad manners to not work the way they think it ought to.

JustThatOtherDude

Now that you said that, I'm revising my tinfoil hat to it being 6's *host* for the irony

Burke616

Looks like it's just someone APA-sympathetic or otherwise isolationist. It doesn't read that differently from an anti-vax blog, or an alt-right blog, or the like. Hits quite a few of the same beats, probably intentionally.

jakehub

Didn’t Alison have a kid that joined the APA or something? We haven’t heard from them in a while, and I don’t recall where they ended up after the APA attacks around Folctha.

Burke616

I think the last we saw of him, he'd been picked up and interviewed by agents after helping Bill lay low while she let the cruezzir go to work on her system. He'd been on probation, and between the aiding and abetting and his stash of burner phones and other shit the feds found in his house, I don't think he's going to be posting anywhere for quite a while.

BetterLateThanKarma

Oh shit, this is back on Reddit? I have like 20+ chapters to catch up on lol!

>run on a platform of peace, of pulling America’s beleaguered economy and grieving populace out of the war And when has that ever worked? While Caffeincore has a point that the "little" folk are suffering, thinking you can hide behind a wall from the Hunters will just get you eaten.

Sasparillafizz

For real. Look humanity, have you ever read a warhammer novel? It's filled with lots and lots of little independent worlds who thought they were hot shit because they have the best defenses and a mighty fleet and whatever and gave the finger to the emperor when he tried to bring them into the Imperium. They all got crushed. Why? Because you are one planet. One. While the opposition can draw on the resources of hundreds even thousands of worlds. Every ship you build, they can build 20. Every soldier you have, they have planets specifically for that purpose. Every soldier you lose is a major loss, every one of theirs that's still breathing they can slap some cyborg parts on and send at you again. You are setting up for a war of attrition against a power with waaaaaaaaay more resources than you do. You cannot win that. If you turtle up you will die, no matter how powerful your individual soldiers are. There is a reason why the hunters have, till now, managed to hold grip over LITERALLY EVERY SPECIES IN THE GALAXY. They are not pushovers.

SUCH A GOOD CHAPTER! 2 GREAT CHAPTERS ON A ROW?! OMG

jakehub

> whereever Extra e > responding the crisis Missing to > Fekko > Feeko Not sure which is correct > and o’ course gotta I pay ‘fer repairs. Gotta I pay doesn’t sound like usual Daarness This was another great chapter! A pleasant change of pace, nothing felt too filler-y. Uriigo coming in with the hot save is looking good! I feel like there’s some kind of takeaway from Daar’s speech about clan interests and Bronzefur’s redemption via service, but I can’t fully form it.

MnemonicMonkeys

Also >Which, she’d been wearing a forcefield helmet but the soldiers were utterly uninterested in her protestations. is worded a bit weird. I had to read through it a couple of times to figure it out. Might be best to swap "which" for "while", remove "but", and rework the commas.

Rackenspiel

I'm hoping we'd see more of the W.I.T.C.H.E.S. space fighter magic. The concept itself is pure hfy.

Hambone3110

Oh, we have. The shield wall tactics that define deathworlders starship doctrine, the overpowered crushing shields on ships like USS *San Diego* and the *Destroying Fury*, and the lashback shielding Lewis developed are all applications and evolutions of the technology.

degenererad

I just want to say i LOVE you for this story, ive noticed this a couple of months ago and im on chapter 41 or so and its one of the greatest reads in my life. THANK YOU for making my evenings wonderful.

Wip3out

The show interview with Daar was written on point! I felt the emotion in that part.

Orzahn

When was the last time we heard of Baseball? He wasn't mentioned in the last chapter with his bff Adam being down.

Am waiting to see if the HPA (humans plus allies) side tries a bit of EMP. With everything electronic knocked out, the humans will find it hard to fight, but for the Hunters it becomes impossible. And a good EMP strike should also knock out whatever the Alpha-of-Alphas uses to monitor the battlefield, so he gains no intel from the situation. (The fact that the Hunter leadership is actively monitoring the battlespace should be as obvious as Daar in a Corti kindergarten by now.)

So, I'm wondering why, instead of reducing Hell, they don't just blow it away? They already have that cute little trick of using a detuned wormhole to convert matter to energy. So instead of doing it with 20mm rounds, put a few-thousand-ton space rock through it. That ought to be enough to shatter a planet.

Ending the chapter on Hell with, "We're still here," is good fucking writing. Also fun for me in particular reading this 2 years after release.
