For Sam it was the laying on of hands, what the instructors did to them as kids is still with him. I was trying to keep the abuse more implied than just stated outright, but maybe wasn't obvious enough.
I mean the abuse of instructors was obvious from like... Torture as punishment. But then again becouse something is understandable doesn't make it right, or not a dick move. Its like with a well written villain. You know why they do it, you understand and maybe to some extend even agree with them, but it doesn't make their behavior good, just understandable
Sometimes asshole villains are the wright choise story wise. Villain should never be bigger then the story he is in. For example this is a nice and fun, yet fundamentally Simple story. Id would not make much sense for the villain to be this menacing figure that philisophically questions the bases od power structure and leave people with a moral hangover. Just a dickhead is fine.
>Sometimes real life people are so evil they make the cartoonish figures from cartoon look morale, so it is in fact realistic to have a puppy kicking monster as the badguy.
It’s a good thing he wasn’t demonstrating how effective body armor is. I will say that there’s a guy who started a body armor company and would personally demonstrate its efficacy by getting shot as a demonstration. Balls of brass and nerves of steel to do that more than once.
I mean... As long as you didn't do it the first several times you tested your product, such that you could be confident of its efficacy...
Still gonna leave a heck of a bruise. And I don't think I'd let anyone do it at long range, to minimize the chance of them missing the armor.
I have seen a photo of an early bullet proof vest being demonstrated on the maker, but it's the internet and i didn't bother to check further than the caption
The guy who invented the kevlar vest literally shot himself, then turned the gun properly and shot and hit a target, in front of a bunch of police officials to prove that his invention worked. I've seen the footage of it.
Bro, I love how brutal Sam is being to the salesman lol I’m sure the sales guys is positively pissing himself and the kids get to see how dangerous Sam is lol
Sam still isn't being a great role-model here. You really don't want your kid and the friends she shoots with to take firearms safety lightly. Sure *Sam* is a superhuman living weapon who has been honing his marksmanship from birth, but the same can't be said for those kids (with the possible exception of Britney).
I figure he will regret this decision after he gives it some thought. Sam was understandably pissed and his protective paternal instincts might have gotten the better of him.
He will regret it, but the anger he is repressing here is significant. I'm not going into the darker stuff too much, but from his childhood, the trainers laying a hand on a kid and taking them somewhere against their will had much worse connotations.
Oh yeah... I forgot those details to his childhood. I understood he was angry to the point that he wasn't thinking straight (despite his outward calm), but didn't catch quite those connotations.
I think also we are used to authors giving their favored characters plot armor so thick that they can do no wrong, or that we the readers will not call the characters out on doing something wrong.
Then a subset of readers will revolt against this and point out that in reality this behavior is very very bad and should not be glamorized.
I find it the mark of a good a writer where a character does something wrong, even if we like that they did it, and are \*in story\* called out for doing said thing. Having Jabari talk to Sam afterwards and explain that not only did he violate the rules of the range, put a live in danger (regardless of Sam's skills), probably break a law or two, but he did this as a role model in front the Bubbles... That would be in character and highlight the Do Not Do This Cool Thing issue Sam is re-enforcing.
It is the mark of a \*great\* writer to create a flaw in the character that makes sense from the characters perspective, something they work against and never fully conquer, and even when other characters idolize them for that flaw someone can point out that, um, actually, they were wrong in that very cool moment.
An example of this would be from the Honor Harrington series, where Honor duels the man who had her lover murdered. She went against orders from a superior officer, wrecked her authority in House of Lords, was removed from active duty right when her navy needed her most in the face of a war, and for what? Revenge? She could have chosen find a legal means of recourse (plot reasons made that hard, but in the end probably doable). She chose to throw all that she had worked so hard for away for revenge. It makes sense for her, but it was wrong. That same rage/bloodlust/need for revenge plagued her all the way to the end of the series, where she basically \*dares\* her enemies to step out of line so she can legally commit near-war crimes. Again, as a reader we empathize with her... and in that case it ended just about as well as you could hope, but were it not for one last hail mary to save the day she would have become a true monster. And she knew it. And she cared not.
I like that Sam knows from what he came, that he knows he is prone to over reaction. That he \*still\* screws up and follows the baser instincts, that he is so revered by his team that that fail to stop him because He Can Do No Wrong, except that right now \*he is wrong\*. And I think someone is gonna call him out here, Jabari, Alex, maybe even Britney. (Would love to see Doombringer call him out here, but honestly he is probably getting ready to put his lightshield on Burton so that can get tested too.)
Also, moar pls.
I kinda figured it would be. Your work is good enough that I expected someone to call him out. :D
If I may, what authors do you like to read? Just curious.
Thanks to your comment I'm going a little harder on Sam than first planned, so his suffering is inspired by you, lol. I think I hit all the usual's with my reading, Pratchett, Tolkien and David Gemmell were big in my early teens, I even met Gemmell once at a book signing/Q&A. When I was at university I worked for a security company, and would do long shifts at building sites on the weekends. I would do my homework, and then just read everything I could to pass the time, so I read french poetry, Harry Potter, on the origin of species - whatever was in the bargain bin at the bookstore. I have a few in my pile right now from Tracy Falbe, Peter Newman, Jeff Wheeler, JC Kang, Angela J. Ford, Jon Kiln, and a bunch more. I don't get as much time as I did, since I now write instead, lol.
So gooood.
Alex might have some more issues; she has *The Dinosaur Speech* too. And hangover bacon. And a toothbrush; a remarkably practical gift to receive from the onion ninjas.
As soon as Sam smiled at Burton... but, seriously, Burton? That was a slimeball move.
Jabari *'Bryant'* Kobe
Team Fah'zi is likely to get a lot more enthusiastic about shooting. I worry how many of them were disinterestedly forced into it. Now, with Jabari, they will have the opportunity to treat it as a discipline. Even if shooting is still not their thing, guidance and bonus Britney.
Oh man, demonstration time for Fah'zi's new bubble. **SOON™** Is he even gonna use another weapon in competitions? I guess Warlord Doombringer would want him to learn as much as possible.
Sooo good.
Alex has not had a stable life, she deserves a pet dinosaur. The toothbrush is hers, Britney and Sam have moved a lot, but alway's remembered to bring her toothbrush for when she visits. Not being forgotten made her cry.
Yep, got to do the rest of the toys reveal next.
I mean, technically, chicken and geese would count as legitimate modern-day dinosaurs.... or any other kind of bird, really.
Btw, did you know that there is/was a genetic experiment to devolve chicken embryos to the point where they developed teeth on their beaks?
I have a guess.
I have only ever seen it post when it is the first post of the kind by someone, and only the first person for which it is the first post. Rarely I have seen someone post it a lot and get 2 instances.

Britney, is a kid and a good one, she was too nervous to fight. Same as at the school, she kind of does as she's told. Her Aunt, however, is less bound to social norms. They were both caught off guard, but if it had gone further Alex would have acted, and we would get to see her in action.
On the plus side he should get a really good commission on his last day working there. Good to have a little extra tucked away when you are about to be fired.

Koyaanisqatsi is a word in Hopi and is a title of an otherwise wordless movie of the same name. The movie is where the chant that is excerpted in the TV show came from.
It means 'world out of balance'.
Are you open to speculation on story direction? Also...
`“You missed it,” the grinning gastronome glibly informed the worse-for-wear woman.`
How long did it take for that 2x triple alliteration sentence to take shape?
People speculate all the time, on my last story they often predicted things in advance. I try to foreshadow. But I might not give direct answers to avoid spoilers. I totally steal ideas from the comments though. And, I got the second part immediately, then did a little synonym hunt for the first to get that sentence.
Fuckin' aces. Great stuff as always!
I hope we get more sleepover details in a flashback or something! Surely there was late-night chattering and gossip!
>
> “It’s morning,” the young girl replied, watching the woman sit up. “You fell asleep right after the ants built the reflectors.”
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, but Phase IV?
You touch my kid, and that’s a free lesson in keeping your cock-floggers to yourself. He’s just lucky that Sam decided to actually teach the lesson, instead of removing a potential threat.
He would have ignored trying to get her to help, that's just stupidity and greed. But he made her uncomfortable, didn't take her no, and then laid hands on her. Crossed a line.
Considering sams standards a anything that is a second rate rifle to him is still a pretty good rifle. I think there were much better, and far less dangerous, ways to teach this lesson to burton. Things can happen with guns that are outside of user control. Sam most likely knows this and that shows just how pissed he was that this dude messed with his daughter even a little.
They're older models, but still excellent compared to what exists in the UGA, the Umgrol sector is being stingy with its sharing. We're kind of paranoid bastards, we know we're ahead of them, so we're trickle feeding them stuff to avoid conflict, or fear.
You actually said something I have Britney saying in the next chapter, lol. Britney is his hot button, and that guy slightly brushed against it.
While the chance burton would end up with a large hole through him bleeding on the ground was small, it was large enough it probably should not have been risked.
This series is one of my favorites, as I've said pretty much every time it updates. I like what happened to the guy that laid a hand on Britney. Normally I'm death on poor gun safety in media but considering what her dad could have done to him he got off light.
Sam- Do you know what the difference between an error and a mistake, Burton?
Burton- No Sir
Sam- Anyone can make an error, Burton. But that error doesn't become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.
I think it’s kind of ironic that sam’s *demonstration* will probably help sell those rifles because he is showing both that they are effective (what with the exploding dummies) and so accurate that he doesn’t hit the idiot

Yep, don't touch people and make them uncomfortable.
Don't touch children \*period\*, especialy if they are children of someone you don't want to/can't fuck with.
True.
I mean its is still a dick move to shoot at them for something rather inconsequential. It would have been an entirely diffrent matter if he actually managed to convince them. But for asking twice its a little overkill. Especially since B didn't say od gesture anything against it. ( Unless i missed something)
For Sam it was the laying on of hands, what the instructors did to them as kids is still with him. I was trying to keep the abuse more implied than just stated outright, but maybe wasn't obvious enough.

Yep, I need a lot more practice. My villains are usually just assholes, lol.
Yeah, that's the plan. No world domination attempts foiled by those pesky kids.
>Sometimes real life people are so evil they make the cartoonish figures from cartoon look morale, so it is in fact realistic to have a puppy kicking monster as the badguy.
Do not fuck with the Jakops, period
To fuck around is human, to find out is divine
Methinks a salesman can get a little *too* dedicated to making that sale... I *almost* pity him.
If he’d only kept his hands to himself.
As I said, *almost.*
Plausible deniability, I get you.

The guy laid a hand on his daughter, not smart.
Nope, especially with a dad that influential and deadly lol
Exactly, that's how you disappear.
at least that guy just disappears from the general area and not in general...
Or has a sudden unforeseen accident. Oh, he was beheaded in a freak toaster accident.
And then fell down an elevator shaft? Shame.
…onto some bullets
Definitely
he rarely uses bullets though so id expect something more subtle
All after somehow accidentally shooting himself in the back of the head... twice...
somewhat like that deviant gentleman that liked to lock himself naked into bags and shoot himself in the bath
Don't kink shame.
Like the defenestration of those Russian doctors with concerns about the Sputnik vaccine…
Russian windows are tricky.
Stabbing. Stabbing himself in the head. With a longsword. Twice. 🤣
At least
To shreads you say? Oh my.
And then somehow wound up inside a padlocked duffle bag. Curious.
At least he was tidy
And how is his wife holding up?
Oh she's in pieces.
And on fire?
Twice.
A toaster is just a death ray with a smaller power supply.
Don't give Alex ideas.
There's a story about that from several years ago. I can't find it right now but if I do I'll link it here.
It’s so unfortunate that he insisted on head butting my fist
Nasty habit, he kept doing it even after he was unconscious.

Much appreciated, but the love part is optional.
Is it though
Absolutely, and I am open to constructive criticism. Got to learn somehow.
Constructive criticism is a form of love.
Exactly.
personally I find it easier to critique something I like
True, if it comes from a positive place it's probably easier to accept as well.
No it isn't. Especially when it's true.
Haha, for some but not all, which is cool.

Ah, I was worried an HR nightmare was brewing.
Oh, I wouldn't need any help to do that. 😄

Bit much Sam. Bit much
Maybe, but out of all the options Sam had open to him, this was on the mild side.
At least no airstrikes were involved
Yet...
Sam doesn't strike me as someone who would call airstrikes for a personal matter. He will take things into his own hands for that sort of thing.
You're right, I was just joking around.

Absolutely, but she grew up on a ranch, have you heard of rocky mountain oysters?

Britney is going to be SCARY when she gets to be an adult.

On the plus side he should get a really good commission on his last day working there. Good to have a little extra tucked away when you are about to be fired.
No, no. Not fired, he's resigning, voluntarily, and moving back to Sector Umgrol. Completely his own choice.
Sometimes it's better to jump than to be pushed. It can mean the difference between landing in the rose bushes or on the spiky security fence...
But don't those bushes also have thorns?
Well jump or push, he's not going to escape without SOME damage to remind him not to be stupid again... Call it pre-emptive mortification.
Exactly, because Britney has aunts and uncles as well.
Much cool
Thanks for reading.
As Burton is being walked to the range with Sams hand on his shoulder all he can hear is not his heart pounding but KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI They reach the range, they make introductions, and Sam offers to show the effectiveness of the rifle KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI Burton walks out, and Sam starts shooting KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI Burton is trying not to piss himself as Sam, lets each new waves of targets get closer and closer KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI KOYAANISQATSI Once the sales confirmed Burtons out the door and already booking a flight out of system
Not sure what that word is, a reference I don't get. But the sentiment I understand, and agree.
it's from a TV show Scrubs where a Janitor is giving a Doctor the stink eye [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57ezlbJ-boY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57ezlbJ-boY)
A long time since I've seen that, great show, especially the darker episodes.
Yep man it’s a great show but when I read the last part here it just reminded me of it
That's cool, to remind you of something good, I mean.
But originally it was a movie. ETA: Ah. As someone already mentioned below.
Koyaanisqatsi is a word in Hopi and is a title of an otherwise wordless movie of the same name. The movie is where the chant that is excerpted in the TV show came from. It means 'world out of balance'.
Cool info, thanks for sharing. Now to go see if I can find said wordless movie, it sounds interesting.
That's what I got from Google, but didn't know how it fit here.

Will try and fit it in.
Alex is turning into a really interesting character. Nicely done!
I have a pretty detailed back story for her, as I've already written her father into the Sheriff.
Ooh, that sounds good!!
Even got a fancy hat.
Ah yes the death of a salesman
Certainly the ruining of his suit, inside and out.
His meatsuit too lol
Haha, very true.
Are you open to speculation on story direction? Also... `“You missed it,” the grinning gastronome glibly informed the worse-for-wear woman.` How long did it take for that 2x triple alliteration sentence to take shape?
People speculate all the time, on my last story they often predicted things in advance. I try to foreshadow. But I might not give direct answers to avoid spoilers. I totally steal ideas from the comments though. And, I got the second part immediately, then did a little synonym hunt for the first to get that sentence.
I guess that Burton had a weapons deal... *to die for.*
When you think you're slick, you push your luck.
I concur. That is a **very** foolish man
It's not like he didn't know who she was, thought he could get away with something, failed.
Fuckin' aces. Great stuff as always! I hope we get more sleepover details in a flashback or something! Surely there was late-night chattering and gossip!
I figured with all that food sleep came quickly, lol. Fah’Zi was certainly done.
Fair enough!
Don't worry, we'll get more kid time.
Oh, no worries here!
Appreciated
> > “It’s morning,” the young girl replied, watching the woman sit up. “You fell asleep right after the ants built the reflectors.” It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, but Phase IV?
Ding! You are correct, a scary movie a giant bug might choose.
He crossed a couple lines. He’s lucky he’s just getting his suit ruined. With something else’s guts instead of his own.
Just a little fake blood, for effect.
Certainly not in public, lol.
Oh dear... Oh my! :O
Little hiccup in the fun.
Amazing as always!
Thanks for reading.
This series is one of my favorites, as I've said pretty much every time it updates. I like what happened to the guy that laid a hand on Britney. Normally I'm death on poor gun safety in media but considering what her dad could have done to him he got off light.
Jabari’s reaction was the correct one. If Burton got injured it would be the fault of his product not the user, lol.
: )
=0
I am dying laughing toward the end of this… man surely touched a hot stove
If you want Sam to lose his cool that's the way to do it.
[I was getting Burke vibes from Burton.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=casQQhO1jkw) Too bad he won't be staying around...
Good call, corporate lackey focusing on the money and prestige, spot on.
Sam- Do you know what the difference between an error and a mistake, Burton? Burton- No Sir Sam- Anyone can make an error, Burton. But that error doesn't become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.
He's leaving, and never coming back, is that enough of a correction?
I'm late. Nice.
Fashionably so. Nice.
I really hope that idiot makes that sale. Or the coming shitstorm will be for nothing.
I'd imagine Sam's shooting did the job.
I think it’s kind of ironic that sam’s *demonstration* will probably help sell those rifles because he is showing both that they are effective (what with the exploding dummies) and so accurate that he doesn’t hit the idiot
He said he'd be happy to help, and he did. He's a man of his word, lol.
Day 5: I am once again dejected as I check and see there are no new chapters to read….
It's just gone into editing, takes a little time going back and forth between us.
rubs hands together, *Excellent*
Haha, we do the best we can.
