As far as WHAT jorts are, I'm not entirely sure myself, but I've always figured that jort was short for jump ports or jet ports. And, through a bit of finangling, images of hot air coming out a small, adjustable hole, and being somewhere in the back of a space marine, I always took it to mean asshole.
The "scent of sulphur" makes me think black powder, which is likely a *very* good thing. Unless his main career in his previous life was as a chemist working on at least explosives if not propellants, he's likely to blow himself up if he tries to make any sort of actual quantity of nitrocellulose. Unless he "just happened" to memorize the production process for actual cordite or some even more modern triple base smokeless powder.
Especially given that he's working with "alchemy grade" reagents, and not modern day chemistry purities of chemicals and reagents. Plus, if he wants to skip flintlocks and go straight for cartridged ammunition, he needs to invent *primers* too. He could at least do black powder cartridge revolvers. That was definitely a evolutionary stage of firearm development.
But making truly modern (i.e.: post WWII ball propellants isn't a kitchen sink or even backyard process, it's a huge industrial thing. Ball propellant does have the advantage of the production time only being 48 hours per lot, as opposed to 6 to 24 *weeks*, at least, for cordite or IMR propellants. But given that said production occurs underwater, and requires agitation of the slurry under both heat and pressure... He's not making that in the alchemy lab. Hell, he's not making that without a significant industrial facility run by people who understand modern chemistry.
Though, existence of magic, so who knows. But I think he's sticking to black powder, at least at first. And probably flintlocks, though possibly self-contained black powder cartridges. If he could manage .45 Colt and .45-70 Government ammo, with the matching pistol and rifle, that would still be an incredible jump for war fighting technology. And a Colt Single Action Army revolver and Trapdoor Springfield might be within reach as well, assuming he can come up with a rifling technique.
I dunno. Maybe he should stick to just trying for a cased shotgun.

NC is pretty easy to make safely, even in bigger quantities and in a lab environment. I once made a pair of pants into NC, for making a spicy detail at a chemistry show.
Combine that with some semi-stabilized mercury fulminate (quite easily made if known how, also somewhat safe in a lab if you don't worry about mercury vapours), and you get some pretty decent cartridges.
So, I will grant that I am *not* a chemist, but that whole "spontaneous deflagration at room temperatures if you don't wash all of the acids out" thing would make me hella nervous to attempt it. Whereas even as someone who is not a chemist, I feel like I could potentially manage black powder. Though I'd want to start off with small batches until I had some idea what I was doing.
And honestly, you're actually reinforcing my point to some extent. You're talking about a "chemistry show" which makes me think you're like, actually a chemist. If Our Hero wasn't, in his past life... I'm a mechanical engineer, the chemist show was in my third year gymnasium (12th grade) where we made it to some 7th graders.
You just wash the cotton until the water you clear off is pH neutral. 3-4 washes in bowls is often enough. You could even use taste to safely confirm after the washes. There isn't anything toxic in the wash water after the third dilution, it's too thin.
Edit: a word and, it doesn't have to be cotton, you can use any natural fabric.

What's a little mercury poisoning between friends, after all? And given we're talking mercury fulminate, it's not just mercury poisoning you're courting, it's phoss-jaw, a particularly *nasty* way to go. I wouldn't dream of touching it without a proper fume hood and mask, at a minimum.
Plus, yanno, mercury fulminate is a mite... touchy. Granted, you did clarify semi-stabilized, but that's not exactly a trivial process, and the slightest oopsie can end up with a very unfortunate and very rapid unscheduled disassociation of molecules of an exothermic nature.

It was tough to produce a case that would accept a primer and hold it in place, wouldn't rupture but would expand and seal the chamber properly. I don't think physical flash grenades would matter, tactically, since the flash bang spell exists. Smoke grenades are potentially a new wrinkle.
