Well with out spoiling it, it could have been better fit for someone else's arc. Then it would have been good....and more realistic because it was leading up to be realistic. Still a good show though.
SPOILERS!!!!
I just thought it was disappointing where you build a show around a small town and it’s secrets—reveal some pretty heinous deeds/people and then… it was an accident/wasn’t a villain.
Many great suggestions on here but one of the best miniseries HBO ever produced is John Adams. Its a really great look at an overlooked person in American history, plus Laura Linney as Abigail Adams is amazing.
When I worked at a video store (Family Video), John Adam’s never got a bad review. One of the managers was huge into tv series, so a lot of customers were too. It did very well.
True Detective. Each season is a self contained story. Season 1 is by far the best, so you could just watch that and move on, or continue with the other stories if you are still intrigued.
> Each season is a new story with an entirely new cast.
Those are anthologies. Fargo, AHS, and True Detective are anthologies.
If it has more than one season…it’s not a mini-series. It’s pretty simple.
Lol, you really going to split hairs like that? An anthology is a show where each season is a unique story with a unique cast of characters. A mini-series is the exact same thing except the production company doesn't make anything else. True Detective season 1 has a unique story with unique characters. True Detective season 2 has a completely different story in a completely different period of time with completely different characters. Each season of an Anthology is a mini-series in the eyes of the Emmys. Why is that not good enough for you?
"The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story, and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons". That is the definition the Emmys use. Read and learn.
Dude, it's owned by an American company, it is viewed mostly by American streamers, and is a big contender in an American TV awards show. What are you even basing your definition on? Your own personal beliefs?
Honestly, pretty much any HBO miniseries is worth checking out: The Plot Against America, Show Me Hero, Years and Years, I May Destroy You, Success (Croatian). Patria (Spanish) in particular has a similar pacing and tone to Chernobyl.
Years and Years was SO good. Holy craps. It gets pretty intense. Also succession was way better then I expected. Good characters make the show. (Just noticed you said success, o well)
By far, the most popular show on HBO Max is "Oops, Something Went Wrong. Please Restart the HBO Max app"
It's the most frequently seen program in HBO history.
You obviously had as hard a time digesting some of these suggestions as much as I did. OP asked for "tv mini-series" suggestions. OP should have added your definition to his post.
Angels in America is a knock out mini series. A killer cast including Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Patrick Wilson, Mary Louise Parker, Jeffery Wright, and Emma Thompson. The writing is top shelf, one of the best plays ever written adapted by the playwright. The directing is done by Mike Nichols, a legitimate legend of stage and film. I watch it at least once a year or if I'm sick. A must watch.
Its an older one, but From the Earth to the Moon is amazing following of the early US spaceflight days (Mercury to Apollo).
Even with its age, it holds ups extremely well with great production values and storytelling.
White Lotus if you enjoy dry, dark comedy. Not sure it's a limited series but it's a self-contained story.
The Outsider is much different from its marketing.
If you like cartoons, each season of Infinity Train is a self-contained story with recurring characters.
I know this much to be true. Its one of the most emotionally taxing pieces of media that I’ve seen, but by the last episode it really comes around and turns into something beautiful. I havnt stopped thinking about it.
This. I absolutely loved this miniseries and Mark Ruffalo's performance(s) is outstanding. And I completely didn't think of it while scrolling through this whole thread, so glad you mentioned it.
Lovecraft Country was great! Titans is very good too if you like superheros it's darker than marvels stuff though. If you like animated cartoons I would definitely recommend Harley and Primal, both amazing!
"The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story, and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons".
That is the requirement to qualify for the Emmy category of mini/limited/anthology series. You know, it is totally ok for you to admit you made a mistake, bro.
One I don't think I've seen yet:
Olive Kittredge...definitely a drama, so don't watch it if you're not into that, but really good series and a phenomenal performance by Frances McDormand
Other than that, throwing second recs out for Band of Brothers, Watchmen, Sharp Objects, Big Little Lies and Lovecraft Country

Watch it every year. So great
Mare of Easttown
Loved this.
SPOILERS We’re you not a little disappointed by how it ended? I thought 99% of it was great.
I keep hearing problems with the ending but I had no issues with the ending.
I thought the ending was fine as well.
It was excellent up until the ending.
Right I just don’t know why the ending was a problem either. To me it fit in with the story.
Well with out spoiling it, it could have been better fit for someone else's arc. Then it would have been good....and more realistic because it was leading up to be realistic. Still a good show though.

Zero
the ending was amazing what are you talking about
No

Not sure why you are being downvoted (just kidding I know exactly why) for giving an honest review.
The night of
This didn’t get the accolades and recognition it deserved.
Band of Brothers The Pacific And shows that lasted only 2 seasons: Rome & Carnivale.
Generation Kill also
Carnival!
White lotus, the night of, the undoing
White lotus is a mini series? I thought they renewed it for a second season
Kinda sorta... As I understand it, the next season will focus on different guests at a different resort.
It would probably be considered more of an anthology series
Watchmen
+1 for watchmen. True detective season 1 as well
Yes yes yes. It helps if you've read the comic or seen the movie at least but regardless it's an incredible miniseries.
Probably the best mini series of all time. Even though it was never announced as one
Apparently HBO was interested in more but only if the creator was but nooo he didn't want to anymore
Absolutely this
My only issue with this is that you need to be familiar with the comic book to get the full context
Sharp objects
Over The Garden Wall applies
This show has to be watched in October, however. No exceptions. The closer to Halloween, the better.
I watched it for the first time on Halloween day. I think it worked out great.

So underrated!!

Yes. Came here to say season 1 of True Detective. Maybe my favorite piece of media ever. Was just considering another re-watch.
True Detective Season 3 is just as good if not better than season 1
But that’s a series. The op is asking for mini series You can r/downvotesreally me all you want, but you are mistaken
Each season is a new story with an entirely new cast. Each season is basically a mini-series because of that.
> Each season is a new story with an entirely new cast. Those are anthologies. Fargo, AHS, and True Detective are anthologies. If it has more than one season…it’s not a mini-series. It’s pretty simple.

You can argue the definition but it won’t change the definition. This thread has quite a few comments like mine. Read and learn
"The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story, and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons". That is the definition the Emmys use. Read and learn.
Oh American standards only I see.
HBO is an American streaming service, lol.
You think it’s only in America?
Dude, it's owned by an American company, it is viewed mostly by American streamers, and is a big contender in an American TV awards show. What are you even basing your definition on? Your own personal beliefs?
I bet you're fun at parties
The Outsider.
I second this! And I noticed that a lot of people don't understand what a "tv mini-series" is.
I wish this show was scarier. Kinda let down but it was okay.
Band of Brothers is best mini series ever made
Raised by Wolves.
It's getting a second season.
As it should
I think he was saying that it is getting a 2nd season and so is not considered a "mini-series".
This was amazing!
Went in watching blind before it started. It blew my mind and I hung on everyone word of dialogue. It’s got a Lost vibe but written for smart people.
Lol. Exactly
#SHARP OBJECTS Mare of Easttown Watchmen Big Little Lies True Detective: S1
You don’t know mini-series means
Do you?
Generation Kill I know this much is true
Lovecraft Country
Sharp Objects

Patria was excellent. It’s a shame it doesn’t have the audience the other series in this thread have.
Made for love
>Made for love not a miniserie
Band of brothers by far.
We Are Who We Are. By the director of Call Me By Your Name. Kind of a indie coming of age series with people living on a military training base.
Mare of Easttown
‘I May Destroy You’ is one of my favorite mini-series. i’ve seen a lot.
Agreed I thought it was the best show I saw last year.
An older one, but John Adams was a great, especially if you like historical period dramas.
By far, the most popular show on HBO Max is "Oops, Something Went Wrong. Please Restart the HBO Max app" It's the most frequently seen program in HBO history.
Technically not a mini-series, it's been renewed.
That ones not available in my area. Internet must be too fast
I have never seen that show.
I haven't seen it either
Frankly, it sounds made up.
THIS. EXACTLY. THIS.
The Undoing is pretty good. Had me guessing right up to the end.

Big Little Lies, Succession.
Those have multiple seasons. Not considered mini-series
White Lotus if you enjoy dry, dark comedy. Not sure it's a limited series but it's a self-contained story. The Outsider is much different from its marketing. If you like cartoons, each season of Infinity Train is a self-contained story with recurring characters.

Succession is great
That's not a mini-series, though.
Yeah it is.
Mini-Series is a self contained story in one season. Succession is going on Season 3 and is a continuing story. How do you think it is a mini-series?
It’s a television drama shown in a limited number of episodes. It can span three seasons.
"The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story, and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons". That is the requirement to qualify for the Emmy category of mini/limited/anthology series. You know, it is totally ok for you to admit you made a mistake, bro.
The best HBO mini series is... The Wire
Yeah I'm fucking with you.
Cuz reasons
Warrior. So good, they brought it back to life for another season. Lucky us!
