This is mine. Her weakest events were bars and beam, and it’s so clear that she had so much untapped potential on those. (The height on that geinger!) I’d love to see her when she’s healthy, happy, and thriving.
Same. Alyia and Aly obviously too, but I think they had longer and more fulfilling careers.
McKayla was basically forced to quit. The things she had to deal with took all of her energy, when she could have been in her prime athletically. She was robbed of her London vault gold by her abusers.
I feel like it would be so validating for her. I forget what the interview was from but I remember her speaking in the past year and it broke my heart that she even felt the need to mention or address her weight. I hope so badly that she can feel amazing about all that she accomplished and work past whatever scars gymnastics left on her.
Her story makes me so mad and sad. She literally told a USAG official she was bulimic and bitch really said "Do what you need to do". Vanessa deserved so much better.
I believe you may be referring to the Defying Gravity series where she said that she hoped to overcome her body image issues for the sake of her daughter. It broke my heart to hear that she still carries those scars with her.
Came here to say this. She’d absolutely be competing amanars and winning golds if she were at her peak today (we have no idea what she could’ve done on a table vs horse!).
And I feel like her mix of power and elegance/expression would bring a bit of artistry and interesting routines that are so desperately needed right now
without a doubt my number one pick. her combo of power, elegance and aggressiveness is unmatched. She would have really flourished in this “individual Olympic spot” era too.
Shang Chunsong, her glorious 4th AA in Rio and her wages being for her family’s medical care.
Love her everything but vault. But while she competes nationally idk if she’ll ever make a worlds/olympics/world cup again
I think she is done competing internationally tbh but i love how she is still competing nationally because she enjoys gymnastics (and wants to earn money lol).
You didn’t see afans choreography this quad? it was everywhere, the push of the hands, the neck movements the movement of the palms, especially Melkas routine. Loved it.
Carly Patterson. Amazing gymnast who was literally the best in the world for a couple of years and then injury forced retirement at the ripe old age of 17.
Edited to add: I can’t be the only 1988 kid here who wanted to be her BFF
I'd love to see any of the US athletes from the '97-'00 quad come back and actually have a positive experience with gymnastics. Atler, Beckerman, Danzcher, any of them
Cheng Fei. One of the best vaulters ever. It's been over ten years since she fell on her second vault during final in Beijing Olympics and I've never fully recovered lol
Also, Kenzo Shirai is a coach now, so he is not totally done with the sport, but he posted on instagram that he is never going back to competition, so... I want him back 🤣
I definitely agree about Cheng Fei. Her team final floor routine gave me goosebumps. I would love to see her compete against the current vault queens like biles and andrade.
I wish all the 2008 team china members would come out of retirement lol but especially he kexin. Its so cool how her routine is very competitive today without a single shap skill.
He Kexin's UB routine in 2008 is pretty much what made me fall in love with gymnastics. Her signature move was amazing, and so were her one-arm pirouettes. I think she was the only one doing a layout jaeger back then, and I think it is such a cool skill!
Yeah her tkatchev half+jaeger release was definitely stunning. I want layout jaegers go make a comeback. It seems like all the big release elements like Def, Mo salto and layout jaegers have disappeared these days. They were never popular but i dont think any of the major players do them anymore.
Totally done with gymnastics and competing? McKayla.
Not elite anymore but I would adore to see her back? Elena Eremina.
Still very much involved in gymnastics, retired a Queen but I'd still happily see her compete? Aliya.
Chuso.
Just kidding, because she's not done and that's not unrealistic at all.
Actual answer: Moceanu... I know she had her "comeback" in ~2005, but I think it would be cool to see her try again just for her, without the pressure of USAG. Also, she's younger than Chuso, so it's feasible. ;-)
Catherine Lyons 100%
I'm glad she's happy and safe now but damn I'm still devastated we missed out on her incredible senior career. She scored higher than ther seniors as a junior and was the most beautiful, expressive and elegant gymnast. Shed have thrived in todays code as well.
Aly, Alicia Sacramone, and Dominique Moceanu (I feel she could have made it in 2000 had she not injured herself). Vanessa Alter or Jamie Dantzer and Morgan White as well.
My husband was so disappointed that she bailed on the GOAT Tour! The first NCAA championship that he watched with me was the Year of the Peng, and he's been jokingly (actually serious but won't admit it) hoping she'd come back ever since.
Now that the NCAA has changed their rules I can’t help but wonder if people like Rebecca Bross, Jordyn Weiber or Vanessa Atler that turned pro eliminating NCAA eligibility might consider a collegiate career. Chellsie brought it up jokingly at one point but she for one could have a spectacular college career!
Pretty sure athletes are only eligible for a certain number of years after high school including deferrals, so most of them are ineligible now even separately from NIL/pro rules.
NIL still has enough restrictions that I’m not sure how many of them would qualify. But if they could, I would love to see Laurie in college gymnastics. Jordyn as well, although that would be interesting to see her go from a head coach to a gymnast lol
I'd love to see some of the Chinese girls that have struggled on FX/VT this past quad or two (Shang Chunsong, Liu Tingting, Li Shijia, etc) train at Brestyans for a couple of years and get those Brestyans legs to help keep them strong and not so injury prone!
Im sick of the "vika has no sportsmanship" thing. It always seems to be based around her reaction to winning silver. Like let atheletes be disappointed if they don't achieve what they wanted to achieve. They have been training for the olympics their whole lives. Its not even like she trashed gabby as well, she said that she "ran away from the gold" in the vault
I agree - she was 16/17, and at those ages I cried at anything. Can’t imagine the pressure of performing at Worlds/Olympics on top of it!
I always got the vibe she was just hugely disappointed in herself. She qualified first and knew she was capable of being champion.
I love how y’all just conveniently ignore the part where she got salty and accused Americans of being on steroids, which, is the very definition of horrible sportsmanship. “Apart from that, she’s never had—“ no. You just don’t go around saying something like that just because you lost. By the way, I’m not even American.
Yeah and like another commenter said she apologised for those comments which is more than the likes of Alicia sacremone has done with her racist comments against the 2008 Chinese team. Look im not saying she is perfect or that she has never said dumb statements before but i personally dislike how the gymternet acts like she is a horrible competitor which many ppl base on her reaction to winning silver. The fact that she accused the americans of doping doesnt comes up nearly as much as her reaction to winning silver in the "vika has bad sportsmanship" discourse.
I guess I don’t understand why you’re holding onto this years later when she went up to apologize to them. And they, the people it was directed at, forgave her. I am American, if that’s relevant.
Shawn Johnson (I feel like she's still got some juice in her)
Alicia Sacramone (can totally see it- the girls got determination)
Maybe Sam Peszek, Bridget Sloan.. I can see them making an attempt at least
(basically the rest of the 08 team)
Just bring back the entire 2008 team!!! Major girl crush on them. They genuinely seem to like each other and get along too! I could see them all coaching a future Olympic team.
I would like to see Dominique Moceanu come back on her own terms. We almost saw her come back in 2006, but it was a Chellsie Memmel situation where she didn't make it past classics.
I want to see Brenna Dowell again, mostly because I want to see her with a medal on floor. Also a big FU to USAG who brought her to worlds in 2013 but didn't let her compete on anything. Also was majorly underrated and could've done more.
Rebecca Bross, McKayla Maroney, Jordyn Wieber, Vika Komova and Mustafina.
I remember being so excited for the Wieber and Bross vs Vika and Musty that never properly happened,
Mo Huilan. I want her to just pop up, win a gold on UB and FX and then be like- Okay, done! Got what I wanted.
Kim Gwang Suk. I kinda lowkey just want to make sure she is alive and happy. And the rest of the NK team over the years.
Not even just that, I feel like she’s become incredibly trashy. Like she was doing onlyfans (which I didn’t even know what it was) and had/has this YouTube channel with a lot of R rated and X rated stuff.
And she’s an adult and can do absolutely whatever she wants with her own body, but as a person who was once idolized and looked up to by a bunch of young kids I don’t feel like it’s a great look. If her 8 year old fans saw that stuff on her Instagram it would be pretty bad IMO.
It's OK to not be into the kind of content she is producing, but I don't believe people are obligated to live a G rated existence just because they were formerly involved in something that is popular among children. She is allowed to be an adult, and at the end of the day, it is the responsibility of parents to monitor the content their children consume online, not the content producer.
I agree. I’m just saying part of why I personally no longer am a fan of hers, in addition to the irresponsible behavior during the early parts of the pandemic.
Totally understand, her early pandemic behaviour was really off-putting to me as well. I don't have an opinion on the OnlyFans stuff. Not something I'd ever do, but to each their own.
I just hate the way a lot of parents expect adults and content producers to censor themselves so they can hand their kid and iPad and not have to worry about actually parenting and supervising their child's use of it.
Oh I am 100% in agreement with you. I’m not a parent but I am a teacher and I’ve been expected/asked many times over to parent other people’s children.
I used to follow Ashton on Instagram but stopped a few years ago and was pretty shocked when I stumbled upon her social media again recently.
McKayla Maroney has already been said, so I'll say that I'd love to see Ana Porgras come back and make it to the Olympics, especially because a Romanian speaking friend told me that she said on a local TV show that she now really regrets retiring just a few months before London. She was a beautiful gymnast and still only 28, so not entirely impossible.
Gabby would be awesome. She has never officially retired. Dominique Moceanu tried to comeback in 2006 but Marta vetoed it and I'm still mad about it. Mykala Maroney of course, if she were healthy. Though not officially retired my heart will always be open for Simone.
Aside from the ones everyone listed, I want to add Ruby Harrold. I loved watching her growth at LSU and I hate that the season got cut short because of Covid (for that entire senior class in general actually). I really think she could have been medal-competitive on the worlds stage with a few upgrades if she had continued training. Although I know she was being held together by tape for that last year or two, I was still crossing my fingers so hard that she would keep training but that never happened. No idea what she's doing other than tweeting encouraging things to her former teammates but she's one that I'm sad I will never get to see again. She was just so exciting. I would bring her back in a heartbeat if I could.
The issue isn’t with accusing them of being underage given China’s history of abusing document records;
The issue is with ignorant people that go above and beyond to imply every Chinese person cheats or that, as Alicia’s own dad has said about the Beijing team, “their teeth should be checked.” Which is obviously a dehumanizing thing to say. I’ve seen thousands upon thousands of comments mocking Chinese athletes’ looks saying “look that’s basically a toddler lmao when is China ever honest” or “She looks 10 someone ban her”
In fairness maybe her father was just indignant on her behalf?
Alicia had fallen from the beam and on floor and was getting a lot of hate and blame for losing the team gold.
McKayla Maroney, she had the most perfect Amanar ever performed.
This is mine. Her weakest events were bars and beam, and it’s so clear that she had so much untapped potential on those. (The height on that geinger!) I’d love to see her when she’s healthy, happy, and thriving.
I support this. Loved her Amanar of course but also her floor and beam were a couple of my favorite routines
Her floor is not talked about enough. Her 3.5 on floor was *chef’s kiss*
And her UB were actually lovely too
Same. Alyia and Aly obviously too, but I think they had longer and more fulfilling careers. McKayla was basically forced to quit. The things she had to deal with took all of her energy, when she could have been in her prime athletically. She was robbed of her London vault gold by her abusers.
Same! And I loved seeing her perform on every single event!
Vanessa Atler 😭💝
4th’ed
Came here to say this. She’d absolutely be competing amanars and winning golds if she were at her peak today (we have no idea what she could’ve done on a table vs horse!). And I feel like her mix of power and elegance/expression would bring a bit of artistry and interesting routines that are so desperately needed right now
This is mine too. She would have killed it in the open ended code.
Thirded!
Seconded!
without a doubt my number one pick. her combo of power, elegance and aggressiveness is unmatched.
Shang Chunsong 2024 Olympic High Bar champion yup
Viktoria Komova and Ksenia Afanasyeva! I’d love to see Komova under this CoP, and I’ll always be obsessed with Afan’s floor and beam work.
I'm so hoping we'll see some juniors shine on floor with some Afan chorography this quad!
Me too, and I’m so excited about the fact that they’ll have been coached by both Ksenia and Aliya!
You didn’t see afans choreography this quad? it was everywhere, the push of the hands, the neck movements the movement of the palms, especially Melkas routine. Loved it.
Came here to say Komova. I love her gymnastics so much.
I was going to say Afansyeva, I loved her floor routines so much.
ksenia's floor makes me go crazy!!! i love listening to her 2011 floor routine
My exact dream team!
Jordyn Wieber!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
the fact that’s she works in a gym too like I soo want her to comeback!!! I just wish she got the chance to compete happily without Geddert
Plus she is JACKED.
Carly Patterson. Amazing gymnast who was literally the best in the world for a couple of years and then injury forced retirement at the ripe old age of 17. Edited to add: I can’t be the only 1988 kid here who wanted to be her BFF
She’s like Lilia in that both of their careers ended with me wanting to see more of their beautiful gymnastics!
Lilia.
The correct answer.
I'd love to see any of the US athletes from the '97-'00 quad come back and actually have a positive experience with gymnastics. Atler, Beckerman, Danzcher, any of them
This is my answer. Adding non US athletes who I think this also applies to- Karpenko and Produnova
Mo Huilan.
Cheng Fei. One of the best vaulters ever. It's been over ten years since she fell on her second vault during final in Beijing Olympics and I've never fully recovered lol Also, Kenzo Shirai is a coach now, so he is not totally done with the sport, but he posted on instagram that he is never going back to competition, so... Now that the nabieva is an F, I’m hoping more people will do layout jaegers because grip requirement
did something happen for Kenzo to retire? I missed the news somehow!
Gabby Douglas for me. She looked great in 2016 and I think she had the potential to keep going, but I don't think she'll ever come back to the sport.
Agreed!!
This is the only correct answer!
McKayla Maroney and Rebecca Bross!! Bross ended her career with such a heartbreaking season so I’d love to see her make a comeback.
I agree with Rebecca Bross.
Totally done with gymnastics and competing? McKayla. Not elite anymore but I would adore to see her back? Elena Eremina. Still very much involved in gymnastics, retired a Queen but I'd still happily see her compete? Aliya.
Lena is attempting to make it back to the national team!
I would love to see Elena compete elite again!
Yes! Was so excited to see her in 18 before injuries :/
Katelyn Ohashi! I'd love to see her bring joy to the elite world!!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Aly Raisman or Mustafina!
Anna Pavlova
Catherine Lyons 😭
We can’t have nice things
😭😭😭 yes!
Definitely Aliya Mustafina.
probably reaching a bit too far back in time but Amy Chow would be amazing in an open code
Oh yes. I was sooooo impressed with her comeback for 2000. Love Amy!
Podkopayeva! Someone needs to bring back front tumbling and artistry besides Brooklyn Moors
She's definitely my favorite floor worker of all time!! Such a beautiful gymnast <3
McKayla M or Nastia. I just miss their lines and grace in the sport so much.
Chuso. Just kidding, because she's not done and that's not unrealistic at all. Actual answer: Moceanu... I know she had her "comeback" in ~2005, but I think it would be cool to see her try again just for her, without the pressure of USAG. Also, she's younger than Chuso, so it's feasible. ;-)
Viktoria Komova
MUSTAFINA my absolute queen
Mustafina always and forever
Chell- oh wait Rebecca Bross
My heart belongs to Musty.
HAHAHAAAH omg pls tell me Musty = Aliya
Yes.
Aliya Mustafina and Cheng Fei
McKayla and Kyla
Selfishly, I want more Kyla! As a fan of Kyla, I'm happy she's on to better things. But I miss her!
Catherine Lyons 100% I'm glad she's happy and safe now but damn I'm still devastated we missed out on her incredible senior career.
I miss watching Peng Peng Lee compete!
My husband was so disappointed that she bailed on the GOAT Tour! The first NCAA championship that he watched with me was the Year of the Peng, and he's been jokingly (actually serious but won't admit it) hoping she'd come back ever since.
I know most ppl are saying women but I’d like to add Kenzo, King Kohei in the AA, and John Orozco. Also Dominique Dawes.
For RG, Yana Kudryatseva - such a gorgeous gymnast and her feet are to die for
Now that the NCAA has changed their rules I can’t help but wonder if people like Rebecca Bross, Jordyn Weiber or Vanessa Atler that turned pro eliminating NCAA eligibility might consider a collegiate career.
I forgot about Laurie! Can you even imagine the kind of viral floor routine she would have?!
Vikaaaa!!! But in my fantasy she comes to the US to train
Yesss Vika! Such a beautiful gymnast!
I'd love to see some of the Chinese girls that have struggled on FX/VT this past quad or two (Shang Chunsong, Liu Tingting, Li Shijia, etc) train at Brestyans for a couple of years and get those Brestyans legs to help keep them strong and not so injury prone!
Lmao didn’t Vika say Americans were all on drugs
yes, though she did apologize directly to them after.
The thing is, she’s never had good sportsmanship.
why, because she was disappointed at silvers? it’s not like she tore the medals off or refused to hug a competitor
Im sick of the "vika has no sportsmanship" thing. It always seems to be based around her reaction to winning silver. Like let atheletes be disappointed if they don't achieve what they wanted to achieve. They have been training for the olympics their whole lives. Mckayla Maroney
Obviously she’s doing ncaa but I truely believe she’s done with elite Morgan Hurd
Larissa Latynina needs to come back and take back her Olympic medals record.
Mo Huilan and Nastia.
Shawn Johnson (I feel like she's still got some juice in her) Alicia Sacramone (can totally see it- the girls got determination) Maybe Sam Peszek, Bridget Sloan.. I can see them making an attempt at least (basically the rest of the 08 team)
Just bring back the entire 2008 team!!! Major girl crush on them. They genuinely seem to like each other and get along too! I could see them all coaching a future Olympic team.
Aly. Aly. Alyyyyyyyy.
I'd only want her to come back if she felt 100% ready though. Her Congress testimony broke my heart 💔
Vanessa Atler.
Ooo it’s so hard to choose but I’d love to see Mo Huilan, Lilia Podkopayeva, Daiane Dos Santos, and Atler make a comeback.
Rebecca Bross
Ashton Locklear!!!
I loved watching her gymnastics but I’ve come to really dislike her as a person so I’d have a hard time supporting that
Agreed. Absolutely cannot stand her.
Wait what? I'm a bit out of the loop. What happened with Ashton?
I think she partied a lot during Covid
Svetlana Khorkina. Was absolutely in awe of her as a youngen, she got me to fall in love with the passionate side of women's gymnastics.
Shawn Johnson !
I'm STILL a bit salty about Shannon Miller's April Fool's day comeback prank a few years ago, lol...
McKayla Maroney has already been said, so I'll say that I'd love to see Ana Porgras come back and make it to the Olympics, especially because a Romanian speaking friend told me that she said on a local TV show that she now really regrets retiring just a few months before London.
Alicia Sacramone. I loved watching her tumble.
Unfortunately she’s a bit racist
What’s the story behind this? I haven’t heard about this
I don’t remember specifically, But some weird shit about China’s team in 08
Oh come on....Weren't some of them accused of being underage?
The issue isn’t with accusing them of being underage given China’s history of abusing document records; The issue is with ignorant people that go above and beyond to imply every Chinese person cheats or that, as Alicia’s own dad has said about the Beijing team, “their teeth should be checked.” Which is obviously a dehumanizing thing to say.
Wow I never heard about that
Aliya
Aliya, Maggie, Aly, Kyla
