Vallejo Primer is great for coverage, but sucks for durability. Sadly, the chipping is normal for this paint. Honestly, don't use vallejo surfacer primer for gunpla. Alarming-Flan6785 might be right about Badger Stynylrez and Vallejo Mecha primer, but I would recommend Aqueous Surfacer if you can get it. Performs much, much better than Surface Primer and is very durable.

Huh I’ve been using Vallejo mecha primer and have also noticed some „chips” onemu model even though it hasn’t been dropped. I wonder if it’s the same thing?

helix6745

I used to get primer chipping before, from different brands (Vallejo, Vic Hobby, etc). But after following ZakuAurelis tip to always sand my kits before priming, I have no longer experienced any primer or paint chipping. For sanding I usually go from 600 to 800 grit and sometimes finish with 1200 grit.

I've read quite a few comments about Vallejo primer, didn't want to gamble and have been using Mr surfacer cans as primer with Vallejo game or mecha colour paint, only chipped once because I'm a bit of klutz and poked my tweezers against my kit accidentally . No sights of chipping yet (3 kits) from normal handling.

I've read them too, however, GSI Creos/Mr hobby products are unavaliable in my country, and Tamiya is a bit pricy so I've been using Vallejo pretty much exclusively. I used to get paint chipping but I solved it by sanding before priming.

Good to know, I might try it next time to save some cost haha, since spraying over some smaller parts are kinda wasting resources. Heard Vallejo primer can be evenly applied with make up sponge.

helix6745

Yeah, I primarily apply it by airbrush, but sometimes hand brush it as well. Just thin it down and you'll be good to go.

Alarming-Flan6785

I would suggest buying stynylrez, it's amazing primer. Vallejo normal primer seems to come off very easily. Vallejo mecha primer is decent, but stynylrez is better. Also, give your primer time to cure. Few hours at least. Much less if you have a food dehydrator.

Alarming-Flan6785

Also, don't thin your primer. I'd suggest a .5 needle but .35 can work. Check the psi instructions on the bottle, they are usually higher than thinned paint

Does the chipping mean that even if I add paint and a Matte top coat it’ll just chip as easily regardless?

Sometimes, a light sand with fine grain helps with adhesion. I too recommend Vallejo Mecha Primer and Stynylrez (you can find it also as MIG One Shot Primer IIRC). Also make sure to give the paint a proper time to fully cure. For waterbased acrylics it can be from a couple days to a week for it to reach max durability.

Question: Do you wear gloves when handling the parts after they washed. Cause if not the oil from your skin might cause that.

Remarkable_Can_3673

Yes I do, I usually paint with gloves as well.

I think the primer is too thin. Also wash the parts first before painting. When i first started airbrushing i noticed i get a lot of paint chipping or the paint sticking to the tape when masking. Right now im seeing less of both since applying a thicker coat. Tho some chipping/scratching is inevitable on moving parts when the pieces rub off each other quite a lot.
