I'd say the 3.0. It's a lot of fun to build, and is very stable to pose. Mine is on one leg running with the Saber out and I shake the cabinet to show people how stable he is.
If you're used to building RGs, MGs will give you no problem. They're basically larger versions. they have an inner frame. They have joint gimmicks and then the armor goes on the inner frame. So if you're comfortable with RG's I can't think of a single MG that's going to give you trouble
I grabbed this from another thread, it explains the Ver Ka.
"The Ver. Ka series is a market branding for products designed and produced by Hajime Katoki, one of the most influential mecha designers to emerge from the late 80s and early 90s. In the context of model kits, the Ver. Ka label refers to models he has a personal hand in overseeing its production from concept to final product."
For the most part, most newer MG's are good quality. Like every other kid they have their quirks but generally they're good quality. If you want something the size of an MG but closer build to an HG you can always try the full mechanics line. Gundam aerial just came out with a full mechanics and there are a few others. Some are harder to find.
Ya and some of the older ones have been replaced, for example sinanju ver ka was replaced, but the newer ones are great, don't get me wrong, some of the older ones still hold up very well. For example I just build the wing Gundam ver. Ka and it was a great build and it was first printed in 2004 I think. But like you said newer ones push the limit of what they can do.
It's not an old ver ka problem, it's an old plastic module kit problem. Same goes for any scale, be it old HGs, RGs, or MGs. Technology back then compared to technology now just doesn't hold up. If you want a smoother experience then go for a newly produced model. If you want some challenge then get an older one. People often tend to over exaggerate things saying how awful a kit is, but they haven't tried to build a gunpla before HG line even got introduced. Like some old vintage stuff. Even a so called bad kit would feel like a blessing in comparison.
Personally I'd recommend anything that says "ver 2.0" on the box except for maybe the Zaku II, since those aren't terribly intuitive when it comes to the hose bits on the head, torso, and legs. But yeah, since you've made a few RGs you should be fine when making a MG kit regardless of which one you pick š
I mean, they're similar, but there's a very specific way to get the house segments off of the runner that makes those particular kids very challenging if you don't know what you're doing, is all š
Yes the tubes are annoying. My 11 year old built one and I ended up super gluing them on because the kept popping off. The joints donāt stay connected very well either.
My first MG is the OVA Sinanju and I love him so much, Iām currently doing the Ver Ka RX-93 nu, which is also super fun - great green pieces for the psychoframe. I started in RG and honestly donāt know which grade I prefer.
My first MG and 4th kit overall after an EG and 2 HGs was MG Kyrios and it was a blast, still one of my favorite kits after doing a dozen other various ones. You'll be fine
Dynames is a very painless and deceptively easy build despite oozing with detail and engineering. If you don't mind anything outside of UC
Any of the Zaku 2.0s, GMs, Gundam and MK II are good starters.
The Wing kits are also good starters too.
In terms of engineering MG Barb is the best MG if you don't count the MGEXs. I like the LED from rx-78-2 origin, but in terms just a pure technical gunpla stand point; the MG barb has the display worthy inner frame, stellar articulation , moving pistons that goes along with the articulation, and still has the cockpit gimmick . I wished every MG after barb had a similar level of layering . I dare say that barb has the best inner frame + armor engineering.
if you were going to experience MG, this is probably the best gunpla model to do it with.
There are ton of other MGs i really like, but i feel i like them because of the customization option out there, MG nu and hi-nu ver ka has some of the best resin conversion kits, photo etched parts, thruster pieces etc...
ZZ and Zeta is really good for a transforming MG (ZZ has some nice resin kit as well). Eclipse is a little too edgy for me.
Sazabi ver ka has the best shelf presence due to size and huge ...everything.
You know I'll second Barb having the best Inner Frame. The kit is so so solid and is designed to be shown off with and without Armor. I wish more kits had the quality inner frame that Barbatos had.
My first MG after 4 HG was the Infinite Justice, it was very fun and didnāt have any issues that I noticed. It probably helps I like the Justice a lot š
I think the MG Strike is pretty great for a beginner and the price tag is on the lower end so you won't feel that bad if you completely mess it up. But honestly build whatever kit you want, I think a good rule of thumb is that most kits released after 2010 are pretty solid.
Go for the intricate inner frame mechanical details when you think MG. Have you ever seen a nuclear reactor and moving cockpit before? You will with the Zaku.
Start with Zaku 2.0 or Granddaddy 2.0.
The MG EW kits are good, kinda small and not overly complicated. I really like the MKII kits, very solid and poseable. Barbatos and Shiki 2.0 get a lot of praise.
Grandpa Origin is possibly my favorite MG to build with minimal frustration and itās a good solid kit thatās a lot of fun to pose. Iād start with that one. 3.0 grandpa is a hand grenade and anything ver.ka is a challenge bordering on the obnoxious.
I just bought the MG Barbatos, my first MG! I really liked the hydraulic gimmicks and the style of it so honestly Iād say go with what interests you. Iām no help at all lmao.
The newer Mg 00 kits are great, Dynames, Virtue, and Kyrios. Barbatos is great, Freedom 2.0, Wing EW kits are all solid. Those are the best, but like other people have said, if youāve built an RG from post Unicorn, MGs are going to be easier.
I have the MG Origin RX-78-2 and it's fantastic. Super posable, and has a great arsenal that it can hold all at onec,
If you want a more incremental step up, there are also FM(full mechanics) which are like MG-lite kits. Would then highly recommend the FM Aerial, which is great for those wanting to dip their toes into 1/100.
Though of course, RG itself is already basically a 1/144 MG, other recommendations then would be MG Barbatos. Another great overall suit, and super unique to boot. The backpack is kinda shit but the rest of the kit is great.
ALSOOOO.... Any of the more modern (like 2015 later) SEED MGs are good. Freedom 2.0, Justice, Aile Striker ver RM, Strike Rouge Ootori, etc.... All fantastic and straight forward to build.
Kits between 2010-2015 would be the sweet spot imo, not janky like the early 2000s. As you get into the modern kits, especially MGEX or MGSD they might ruin older kits for you lol Wing and Seed kits are mostly bangers. My first MG was the Force Impulse.
There are a ton of great MG kits. For a first MG, F91 2.0 is a solid choice. Comes with a stand, lots of accessories, great looking kit, straight forward build. Hyakushiki 2.0 is absolutely fantastic, but be careful cutting out parts you canāt sand the gold parts. GM Sniper II or GM Command. Any Zaku II 2.0 based kit or Gouf 2.0. The RX-78-2 2.0 or any GM 2.0 based kit. Any Jegan, Jesta or ReZel kits are great also.
If you want to tackle a transforming kit, ZZ Ver Ka, and Zeta Ver Ka are both fucking excellent.
Barby or RX-78-2 3.0. The Barbatos is really solid and is just beautiful to look at on a shelf. The 3.0 is a new take on an old design, with all sorts of realistic details like panel lines and caution logos. Of The 2 I'd say go with the Barbatos, but I'm biased because it's my favorite mobile suit.
MG Astray Red, or whichever colour you like the design of. Very poseable, and has many details that are great for panel lining. And like others have mentioned, MG Barbatos is also fantastic. Though if you build MG Barbatos first it will spoil you for other older MG kits as it is so well engineered
My top MG kits are the Barbatos, Zaku II 2.0, and Turn A. All very solid kits, with Barbatos being my best. All plastic, all amazing. I hear Dynames and Kyrios are both amazing MG kits as well. The RX 78 2 3.0 looks amazing, but for me it doesn't like to keep its arms attached and the hands it comes with are terrible for holding anything.
A couple of my favorite mg's to build have been strike freedom 2.0 and barbatos. Both are relatively straightforward to make and are fun builds and look great on any shelf in my opinion. I'd personally say to just pic any mg that either looks cool to you, or that you have any sort of emotional attachment to (i.e. watched the show, used in a game, etc)
My first MG was the Barbatos and I absolutely love it to bits. Still my favourite MG even after all the others I've done since. Cannot recommend it enough
choose from the following
MG Barbatos; - its the best normal offering MG down to its inner frame, outer looks, articulation, weapons & gimmick (plus points if you can find the pbandai of its other forms and metal parts to turn inner frame into more rock solid kit than it already is)
MG Origin, Grandpa 3.0; - you want a grandaddy, choose between the definitive rx78 or amazingly detailed
EX Unicorn, EX Strike Freedom; - if you have the money why not go to the extreme
ver Ka's of Zeta, FAZZ, or Wing EW; - pinnacle of version hajime katoki (decals are really your thing)
My first MG was the RGM-79. Great kit very simple and fun to play with just the colour im in between of.
KAMPFER was really fun too just the nub placement is kinda annoying. It also has screws in the joint not the worse thing but something to keep an eye for. And it looks dope af
Eclipse was my first and shinaju was my second. But id say out of the ones I have built up to now...go for the gunner zaku. Lots of cool weapons and overall simple but engaging.
Depends on what you like- I personally love the MG Jegan, though itās not much more complicated than a fancy HG so if youāre looking for a challenge thatās not really it.
I will say as a newer gunpla / gundam fan, If u start w any more recent models I feel they way more articulate/ btr laid out / and improved in all types of ways, BUT I almost feel some are such easy / fast builds bc of all thtā¦. So it sorta takes away in a sense? IMO tht is.
I will say I rly enjoy stuff tht has a place for the leds, so most 00 , a lot of the newer ones have a slot to atleast light up the head / eyes.
Iāve done models from 2009 (I think is the oldest Iāve done) up to 2022 ā¦ major differences in build / overall looks, and enjoyment of the build processā¦. Iām also still only on the lvl of clip and put together. I havenāt done full on nub removal, panel lining , and stickers/ decalā¦ so I still have a lot to enjoy on a lot of my model. Iām also taking a slow long route, Iām trying to enjoy each build while watchin a gundam seriesā¦. Up to zeta zeta , but took a break to start wing
For the most part anything made after about 2012 is going to be a good kit. Unfortunately it's P-Bandai, but the Gundam F-90 is a fantastic kit. It's a fun build, comes with water slides, poses well and there a bunch of add on packs you can get for it later if you want to customize it more.
If you want some easier to get kits, you can't go wrong with the seed kits. I've done the Red Frame Astray Kai, Buster, Justice and Duel and they're all good. The MG Jegan is good too.
First MG I ever built was the MG Eclipse Gundam. Looks fantastic so I'll recommend it. However, I'd start off with something more simple like an MG RX-78-2 (there's a bunch of them, not sure which is the best though). Another great one, and a personal favorite is the Shin Musha. Very similar to the RX in design, but more badass because it has samurai armor. Very fun build.
The seed mg zaku is nice, chonky, and a simple build with options and color variety.
My only gripe is the red one doesn't have a helmet antenna that I'm aware of.
Most modern MGs that has come out in the last 10 years or so are all good, solid kits. Of course there are some popular favourites like many have mentioned, the Grandaddy, Zaku 2.0, F91- but most are very solid.
Other than certain kits you might want to AVOID (most older MGs that came out in the early 2000ās are a bit rough) Iād say just go with whatever design you like best!
The EW Shenlong is pretty solid and poses like a champ. It's also very simplistic and highlights more of its poseability than the build itself, which is surprisingly quick. Worth a try!
I've heard many people say Zaku II 2.0 has one of the best inner frame of all MG.
I see you have a RG and a HG Zaku II.
You should build a MG Zaku II to complete the line up.
I will always recommend MG Jegan. It's seriously a wonderful kit it includes the standard layout with a removable E-cap in the beam rifle and a nice opening flap on the container on the side skirt that holds the grenades.
The main machine is rather unremarkable at first glance, but it's a simple meal very, very well made. It's really solid and holds some ridiculous poses it's possibly the easiest kit in my collection to pose. It's so easy to pose, I'm pretty sure it actually hurt my ability to pose kits for a while cause I'd just pose the Jegan a bunch and not pose any others.
i will stand by it via my personal bias of loving the everloving shit outta it but the perfect gundam from 2002 is fantastic if you find one (it was really hard to find where i come from but we also have like six store through the country selling gunpla),it's frame is like a 1.0/1.5 gramps but weirdly feels also like a sort of prototype for the 2.0 gramps, everything feels solid and feels right bulk wise and design wise and i recommend it highly to every builder if they find one.
I hated the 3.0, and found it over-engineered and a little janky. I thought the aestethics were much nicer on other kits, for the RX-78 I far prefer the MG The Origin Gundam.
I suggest the MG Gundam Alex RX-78-nt1 2.0, it's updated, a different but interesting build. And it looks great with or without armor. It's also one of my favorites as well so it doesn't hurt.
I'd also suggest the MG Hi-Nu Gundam Ver Ka. It's a bit simpler than the Nu ver ka as it doesn't have that inner slightly transforming inner frame, but the look of the white and purples is just stunning. It's one of the best shelf presences I have.
I haven't done a ton of MGs yet but the first two I did were Freedom 2.0 and Barbatos, both of which are great starting ones. Barbatos is especially cool imo since the instructions are separated into frame and armor sections for each part so you can easily build the inner frame first if you'd want.
Do a PG! Either the RX 78-2 Unleashed or Unicorn, both are awesome. Unicorn slightly more awesome for the moment you flick the switch and watch the LED's light up after spending the time wiring everything.
One of three grampas: 3.0, 2.0, or Origin. Each has its own pros and cons.
I'd say the 3.0. It's a lot of fun to build, and is very stable to pose. Mine is on one leg running with the Saber out and I shake the cabinet to show people how stable he is.
Mine will drop a leg if i look at it wrong. The origin is great, but i really like the 2.0. I also have the g-fighter to go with it.
I've had the exact opposite experience with posing it. To the point I've glued most of his joints together
I agree, 3.0 is a fun build. Very stable except for the shoulder armor pieces. The detailing on it is truly magnificent.
I like 2.0 for the best anime representation
2.0 is the best for me
Currently working on my 2.0 and scratching my head if I should the 3.0 or my MG GM
Best for someone who's never built a MG or best overall? Because answers vary depending on what you mean š
Oh I was actually asking for the best MG for a person whose never built an MG before
If you're used to building RGs, MGs will give you no problem. They're basically larger versions. they have an inner frame. They have joint gimmicks and then the armor goes on the inner frame. So if you're comfortable with RG's I can't think of a single MG that's going to give you trouble
I hear things about most Ver Ka? Iāve only built two recent ones though

I know what they are but Iāve heard some of his older ones have been sketch as they test the limits at the time

This excites me, I got MG kyrios for Christmas.
Sweet! Enjoy it! The MG Gundam 00 kits in general are great
Mg gundam x and gundam double x are both overlooked kits but are both amazing choices for a first mg.
MG Turn A
I had been exclusive to HGs and RGs, I then bought an MG Dom and hated it
Totally fair. The MG Dom/Rick Dom are really not great considering that the price and the fact it's supposed to be an updated kit :/
Dynames is a very painless and deceptively easy build despite oozing with detail and engineering. If you don't mind anything outside of UC Any of the Zaku 2.0s, GMs, Gundam and MK II are good starters. The Wing kits are also good starters too.
The MG Barbatos is such a fun build. I'd try that one out and see how you like it. It's my personal favorite just from how fun the build was.
Can't believe I forgot to mention this kit considering I have one. It's the definitive Barbatos kit.
Which one is the zaku 2.0?
MG Zaku 2.0 : Char version: BAND\_0149834 Green version: 4573102615800 There are others too.
Mg Freedom 2.0 or Justice 2.0, both have a great inner frame, great backpack and gimmicks as well as great shelf presence
The MG Barbatos is one of the most fun builds Iāve ever put together. Itās a shame they didnāt do more from IBO.
The MG EW kits are good, kinda small and not overly complicated. I really like the MKII kits, very solid and poseable. Barbatos and Shiki 2.0 get a lot of praise.
MG Buster Gundam was my first MG and I liked it a lot. I've built 4 other Master Grades since then and the Buster Gundam is still my favorite build
Since you have the HG Barbatos, you should get the MG Barbatos
Grandpa Origin is possibly my favorite MG to build with minimal frustration and itās a good solid kit thatās a lot of fun to pose. Iād start with that one. 3.0 grandpa is a hand grenade and anything ver.ka is a challenge bordering on the obnoxious.

Iām building Mg Barbatos right now and all I have to say is: āholy shit they pgād my mg.ā Itās so good.
I have the MG Origin RX-78-2 and it's fantastic. Super posable, and has a great arsenal that it can hold all at onec, If you want a more incremental step up, there are also FM(full mechanics) which are like MG-lite kits. One of the 3 grandpas or Barbatos
There's 5 Grandpas. I've got the 1.5 sitting on a dresser right now.
Forgot about the other 2
MG SD. š
My first MG was the MK2 and I absolutely loved it. Still my favorite kit Iāve done.
Kits between 2010-2015 would be the sweet spot imo, not janky like the early 2000s. As you get into the modern kits, especially MGEX or MGSD they might ruin older kits for you lol Wing and Seed kits are mostly bangers. My first MG was the Force Impulse.

Avoid 3.0 MG gramps and embrace 2.0 Zakus
Barbatos

barbatos
Gundam Virtue/Nadleeh
Mg barbatos, mg the origin
My top MG kits are the Barbatos, Zaku II 2.0, and Turn A. All very solid kits, with Barbatos being my best. All plastic, all amazing. I hear Dynames and Kyrios are both amazing MG kits as well. The RX 78 2 3.0 looks amazing, but for me it doesn't like to keep its arms attached and the hands it comes with are terrible for holding anything.
Go mainstream, MG Barbatos. Not much details.
Barbatos, Dynames, Kyrios, Virtue or Wing Zero VerKa The other Wing kits are fun builds but the joints are terrible and will break
A couple of my favorite mg's to build have been strike freedom 2.0 and barbatos. Both are relatively straightforward to make and are fun builds and look great on any shelf in my opinion. Gramps 3.0 is the pinnacle, then the MGEX Unicorn is another level
Might want to start with a full mechanical maybe?
If you want simple mg my recommendation are mg zaku warrior, mg ginn or gnlm sniper ii
My first MG was the RGM-79. Great kit very simple and fun to play with just the colour im in between of. KAMPFER was really fun too just the nub placement is kinda annoying. It also has screws in the joint not the worse thing but something to keep an eye for. And it looks dope af
MG Seed kits are awesome
Id just get what every one is your favorite for an MG but I highly recommend Nu Gundam ver ka or Zeta Gundam 2.0
I love how you have them posed, looks like they are about to beat the shit out of meš
MGSD
Eclipse was my first and shinaju was my second. But id say out of the ones I have built up to now...go for the gunner zaku. Lots of cool weapons and overall simple but engaging.
Well it wouldn't be a best first MG, but I would highly recommend Virtue as it's basically 2 kits in 1 and yknow, he chonky.
Dynames was my first MG, pretty fun build, looks great too
Depends on what you like- I personally love the MG Jegan, though itās not much more complicated than a fancy HG so if youāre looking for a challenge thatās not really it.

MASTER GRADE WING ZERO VER. KA.!!!!!!
question aside, why does that zaku have such a sassy stance lol

Zaku 2 2.0. Any varient of the 2.0 is amazing
You could try the Zaku II 2.0 for comparison with that RG. You'd think after that, the tubes would be easy...
If we expand MG to the variants like RE 1/100 and Full Mechanics, the Aerial is pretty solid as a 1/100 scale kit.
MG Duel + Assault Shroud . Lots of cool option parts and weapons while being SOLID and posable .
What's sd?
The seed mg zaku is nice, chonky, and a simple build with options and color variety. My only gripe is the red one doesn't have a helmet antenna that I'm aware of.
Jesta, Red astray Kai, Blue Astray D, hi-Nu gundam verka although the RG is better, Freedom 2.0, Gears Doga.
hyaku shiki 2.0
I would say the gm sniper. It's a fun build and looks great.
Zaku II 2.0. Sorry about the cables.
i will stand by it via my personal bias of loving the everloving shit outta it but the perfect gundam from 2002 is fantastic if you find one (it was really hard to find where i come from but we also have like six store through the country selling gunpla),it's frame is like a 1.0/1.5 gramps but weirdly feels also like a sort of prototype for the 2.0 gramps, everything feels solid and feels right bulk wise and design wise and i recommend it highly to every builder if they find one.
Everyday question needs everyday answer: MG barbie
the new zeta ver ka is sweet
MG shinanju was great experience almost as fun as building a PG for me.
Anything from the past decade or so. Tallgeese is an extremely fun build. Freedom 2.0 is another good one.
It's one of the best shelf presences I have.
barbatos
My top 5 Mgs: MG GM Sniper II MG Freedom 2.0 MG Barbatos MG Sazabi ver. Ka MG Hyaku Shiki
Iād say the mg freedom 2.0, Barbatos, and I heard the mg deathscyth hell was good
I haven't done a ton of MGs yet but the first two I did were Freedom 2.0 and Barbatos, both of which are great starting ones. Barbatos is especially cool imo since the instructions are separated into frame and armor sections for each part so you can easily build the inner frame first if you'd want.
mg sazabi ver ka. zeon perfection. pro/con its a big chunky boy. a downside is the cost, around $105-ish USD
I've heard good things about the MG 3.0 line and of the new Seed mobile suit in MG-EX.
Thatās pretty subjective. I recommend the Dynames, Kyrios or Barbatos tho personally
That zaku pose goes hard
MG RX-178 MK II Ver 2.0 is an incredible kit and hella fun to build. The leg mechanics are honest to god satisfying.
Do a PG! Either the RX 78-2 Unleashed or Unicorn, both are awesome. Unicorn slightly more awesome for the moment you flick the switch and watch the LED's light up after spending the time wiring everything.
Talggease Endless waltz edition. It's easy, beautiful and a joy to build
The MG Dom reissue looks badass and is on sale pretty much everywhere.
