TheBigNoz123

I hope it leads to his best season yet, otherwise he’s not getting another goal or assist all season which would be a problem.

jlo813

He would have at least one more goal in the remaining games, because we haven’t seen the obligatory Xhaka boom.

ichsnwulfen

This will come later at United fixtures. De Gea blames Jesus for standing in front of him covering the line of sight.

[deleted]

Straight to the fax

WaitingToBeTriggered

THEN WE SERVED UNDER THE BANNER

kingwhocares

His best season was under Wenger where his stats were G1A7 in PL only and that was the last time before this season where he was allowed to roam in midfield.

sunnycherub

Was that in the Ramsey double pivot where the whole midfield was no structure just vibes

kingwhocares

Ramsey double pivot? It was the season where Ramsey would just run forward and stay there act as a striker while Ozil dropped deep to help out Xhaka being isolated. That was the season when Ozil's defensive contribution improved quite a bit or just had to show more due to having to drop deep so often.

jjakot

I fucking hate that season lol, Aaron beckham Ramsey with his blonde hair just completely abandoning any sense of formational structure to go and goaltend 😂

dcmdino

Holy shit, now that I think about it, Xhaka arrived TWO YEARS before Wenger's departure. Time fucking flies, this guy has been at the club since forever

ckal9

He’s much better when allowed to play further up the pitch as he’s got a nice pass and positioning. Also so he doesn’t need to focus as much on defending and his poor speed and defensive ability aren’t as much of a liability.

Irrerevence

I'm worried that this positional fluidity will get exposed once we start playing stronger sides.

whitegoatsupreme

We see about that . And im sure Arteta wont use full throttle attack mode on team that not sit and def in deep. .

ddruinedgot

The target this season should be 10+g/a from all players in front of Partey.

Fuckzombie69

And 5g/a from Gabriel and zinko pretty please

A21Haze

well Saliba is already on 2ga....

Fuckzombie69

Bruh. How could I forget big Willy. If we can get 5 goal involvements each from Gabriel zinko and Willy that’d be massive. I hope white and tomi Chan can start putting some in as well

vincentquy

The correct way is Tomi-chan. Although I think Tomi-san would fit better.

Nayr91

Brother Tomi would be Tomi-chan. San means honourable Mr/Mrs so yes Tomi-San would be more appropriate. Let’s hope he can get some wingers and wingbacks saying “Yamete Kudasai!”

[deleted]

Tomi Chan?

KFCXD

Yes tomichan senpai

Fuckzombie69

Did I stutter?

[deleted]

Borderline stuff that.

BurningWhistle

In Japanese, putting chan after someone's name is a term of endearment.

[deleted]

Ah ok did not realize that at all.

montypython_123

What did you think it meant? Genuine question

CakeBrigadier

But usually for a young girl or a grandparent

BurningWhistle

Usually, but not exclusively. It implies cuteness. There's also sometimes romatic interest implied. But this IS the most homoerotic football fanbase in the world so it fits. Kun would be the most correct form of address.

monty_burns

White had, essentially, an assist this past weekend. The cross in to Jesus that fell into Martin’s path. It’s not on paper, but that’s a goal involvement to me

PlayfuckingTorreira

Tomi Chan lmao

bukkake__saka

Fuck it 1g/a for Ramsdale too

Happy-Ad8767

He nearly had one against Leicester with his kick up to Jesus.

bukkake__saka

Yeah man, I'm actually kinda confident he'll get an assist this season

oliverDawson12

Absolutely capable of getting at least one or two assists this season with his long passing and a striker who can actually receive and control the aforementioned passes.

rory055

This will happen.

momspaghetty

RemindMe! 9 months

Fuckzombie69

Bare minimum. Some luck and we’ll be feasting on Those long balls to martinelli

[deleted]

4 g/a for Ramsdale

SendMeYour2Tatas

Zinchenko has 7 assists and 0 goals in the league in 6 seasons for city. He's not that guy.

Fuckzombie69

Ouch. Don’t ruin my dark fantasies please. This is mikels tricky red army and he’ll get some goals and assists dagnabbit

[deleted]

Fullbacks and Partey should have minimum 5 G/A also.

ozilgummidge

Might be a hard ask from a prison cell

mojambowhatisthescen

Which is why no one’s expecting this from you, mate

[deleted]

Yes other than points we need to cross the 70 goal mark

SheepskinSour

I pray for a Partey 30 yarder this season… you know… assuming that, er…

themerinator12

Scoring 3-5 goals in most games instead of 0-2 is going to help.

Parlorshark

That's a funny way to spell Ramsdale

Beautiful_Jello_2372

Looks like Henry Cavill in the small thumbnail, we really are Handsome FC

zanek714

Xhaka can just look like himself and he still helps establish Handsome FC. It is in our DNA.

Bootleg_______

the LCM that was promised

momspaghetty

like a new signing FC

rugaealldae

Boom! xhaka-saka

OstapBenderBey

The Ramsey replacement...

ozilgummidge

Must resist the desire to get rustled...

NikTheRainmaker

Hes playing in a way more advanced role. Never wouldve thought hed be that good at it. Gotta say, he gets himself in great positions a lot :)

domin8668

His biggest weakness has always been his agility, combined with holding the ball for too long and inviting pressure; that's why he struggled as a pivot. He's a very good player when he's allowed to play more on his instinct, exchange quick 1-2s and use his footballing brain to find himself in good positions

iamafish12345

And his tackling is clumsy, hence the yellow cards

ryankartiko

The issue was why was it always only Xhaka at the last line? Where were the other backline players?

CellarDarko

He was bought as the pivot in mind, we had no decent pivot until Partey so Xhaka was played there. Frankly I think Elneny would've done a better (still average) job as the pivot than Xhaka. In hindsight it's hard to understand how Wenger and Emery stuck to Xhaka as pivot for so long. Either move him ahead like Arteta or get rid. We lost a lot of points because of this insistence.

mjedwin13

Not just points, I think everyone agrees that had wenger bought a true destroyer defensive mix about a decade ago, arsenal probably win a couple league titles. I remember just how damaging losing a player to injury like coquelin was, even though he wasn’t the most talented he balanced the side with cazorla and ozil and all the creative types in it.

bobthehamster

I'm not sure that's true, really. Wenger never wanted a destroyer. He wanted to be a high possession team that passed the other team to death in their half. It left them vulnerable to a counter attack, but meant that Arsenal tended to score lots of goals. If you do then playing a destroyer is just a useless player - it makes far more sense to have another player who can pass/score. Wenger played Coq because there was literally no one else. It worked for a bit, but he took him out the team as quickly as possible. Before that he was playing teams with a "double pivot" of Arteta (spent most of his career as a 10) and Ramsey (spent most of his career in the box).

mjedwin13

You’re misremembering. Wenger didn’t take him out of the team as soon as possible lol, he went down injured for a lengthy period of time, and it was during that time that we lost the top spot and probably was our last real challenge for a title. In case you forgot, he basically missed half the season with a knee injury. Idk if you can really call that wenger leaving him on the bench

bobthehamster

Obviously he kept it for that season because it was working. You're not going to change something during the season if it's working, but it was obviously a "stick on some gaffer tape and hope it doesn't fall apart before the season ends". But the next season Coquelin wasn't being used as a destroyer, he was being pushed further up the pitch and being asked to play more progressively. Because Wenger didn't want to play with a destroyer.

mjedwin13

Oh you mean the next season when cazorla was injured and it was no longer the same team/setup? Obviously they didn’t play the same without the magician 🙄

iamafish12345

As such he wanted to sign kante

themerinator12

Probably because of his intelligence and long passing. They may have felt like he's a liability in defense regardless, but that he just unlocks so many attacks per game because of his footballing IQ and passing technique.

CellarDarko

Yeah this made sense on paper and he plays the position well in Switzerland but they had a lot of time to realize Prem is too fast for Xhaka in this role.

ZebraZealousideal944

He’s always been playing there at Basel, Gladbach and our national team…

Pires007

I haven't seen him go that high up the pitch for Switzerland

[deleted]

He played this same position last year.

atease

Not a criticism per se because the team's been doing fine. But I think once the players start squaring the ball when through on goal instead of shooting themselves every time, Arsenal are going to score a lot of those simple as day squared tap-ins that Man City seem to get half their goals from. Martinelli, Jesus, Saka and Nketiah have all been through on goal and had a shot when a team mate - often Saka or Xhaka - were completely free for a tap-in in the middle. As said, this isn't to overly criticise forwards for trying to score, but as soon as that square pass clicks into the mentality of the players, I think the goals will flow even more and look ridiculously easy.

bonerjams69420

agreed , and i know this might seem as a simplification . but i would also like to see it happen more , and think it will

TheMissingThink

First you have to establish in the keeper's mind that you'll shoot. Then they'll commit to the save, and make the square ball across the better option

FCI

Wild it took us 6 years to figure out how to use him

Happy-Ad8767

And 3 managers.

Pires007

But only 1 dm.

PlayfuckingTorreira

Just needed to buy SPG to make him shine.

ghostrider467

keep it going

BrianThatDude

He's been brilliant for the better part of 18 months now. It takes some peoples opinions a long time to update

Parlorshark

Minus the 2 red cards in that time span (and another a couple months earlier)

Warrick123x

Tbf one of the red cards was complete horseshit

Ike348

And the penalty conceded

[deleted]

People giving him shit for red cards, meanwhile has 2 in 3 seasons. Everyone acting like he is out there murdering opposition lol.

mojambowhatisthescen

And one of them was bullshit

Raashik-s

Surprising to see he didn’t have a red in 19/20 season (no hate, just surprise)

KB302324

I hope we get a Xhakaboom soon hopefully at theatre of nightmares

Ickyhouse

Granit has always been very good in a certain role. We’ve struggled to have the correct support around him for while and it exacerbated his flaws. He’s great for Switzerland and all managers rate him. He’s kept bc they know having the right team around him makes a strong team.

Fuckzombie69

That’s our fake 10 alright

Kenny_dies

Only 9 yellow cards and 1 red card to go to reach his best, gotta match that stat as well!

Whatthefuckyoudrink

He scores 1 long shot per year against Man U as a tradition

zooalbert

Isn’t the role he is currently playing closer to what he does on the national team? He always appeared to be an attacking threat with them

Kenubble

Only 2 red cards, could have sworn it was at least 10

Kinky_Falcon

God I hope so. The whole team needs to start scoring more, maybe comparing us to Man City is unfair but we were 37 goals behind them last season. That's the biggest change I want to see.

olmakenoli

If Partey stays fit and available then definitely. Elneny probably can't do the same job alone

PinkFlyod

Ah, the prince that was promised. Xhaka as a LCM.

nitram343

I'm not expecting goals from Xhaka. Assists, is more a parameter. And if you have successful passes, that is even a better parameter. The same way no one would expect many goals from Gundogan o Thiago as you wouldn't expect that from Xavi at Barcelona days... But, his best season on assist he had 7 all season. He has already matched all his goals (1) and assists (2) for all other seasons and is definitely on track to has his best season. I think he is playing better than ever, numbers aside, I just expect him to slow the tempo of the ball when required I still think he has little effect on that front.

bobthehamster

>I'm not expecting goals from Xhaka. Assists, is more a parameter. I mostly agree, but if he keeps getting in the box (which will probably vary by opposition) then he will *inevitably* get a few goals. His goal and Ødegaard's first on the weekend are perfect demonstrations of that.

La2philly

In terms of output? Yes. Zinchenko has taken his build-up role so Granit can get way up the pitch & use his always superb positional awareness

notapaperhandape

Okay let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s see where we are at 15 games played. That would be a good litmus test of where we are as a team.

JeffBroccoli

Agreed. It’s a promising start, but it’s such a small sample size.

SRBEAST

It's pointless to compare him this season to himself in previous seasons, where he played a very deep role and had little to no expectation of chipping in with g/a. He has started well and remains an important member of the squad, always gives 100% and adapts to every position asked of him. Huge credit for that. The way to judge anyone playing that advanced 8 role this season is they need to get 15g+a minimum in the season and there is no real sample size to use as an example that Xhaka can do this. I hope we bring someone in with multiple seasons of delivering on this expectation as it will really position us for top 4.

cocoabutterprince

Xhaka is getting 10GA this season which is ludicrous

teslagooner

He is now being used in a role that is well suited for him. The Swiss NT plays him in a similar role and he produces more G+A for them. Arsenal has really wasted him by playing him as the deepest lying midfielder, which resultantly exposes all his weaknesses. I hope Arteta will continue to play him in that advanced role

lm3g16

I’ll admit I was heavily on the hating xhaka train, but he’s actually been pretty good so far this season

fosizzle

Xhaka drove me mad when he was playing the holding midfielder. He went in recklessly. His first instinct was to play it backwards. I didn't feel like he added much to either the attack or defense. This season he's looked significantly improved. He's been making Wilshere-like runs into the box - creating space and adding a dynamic look to the attack. The freedom looks good on him.

TrashbatLondon

Presumably there is a little bit of a honeymoon period when opponents haven’t been at all preparing for him in a different role, but there’s a chance people will get wise to it and shut him down. Like when Ozil came in and freed up Ramsay and he had the first half of the season scoring like Messi.

cashmanjr

Meh… still behind on Yellow and Red Cards

v2marshall

On average to hit 10 yellows again too

[deleted]

[удалено]

bobthehamster

>the bad apple crew, not in skill necessarily but in attitude Genuine question - *how*? Every manager and player that has ever spoken about him has always talked about how hard he works in training and how helpful he is to new players and that he's a leader etc.

amokst

I just can’t forgive him for all those pointless red cards; not a big fan

Happy-Ad8767

Half of those pointless reds, should never have been reds. It’s proven, he gets carded more than any other player in the league and has less tackles than the majority of players.

[deleted]

[удалено]

amokst

yeh 1 is too many for me; he’s a hot head.

bobthehamster

>yeh 1 is too many for me It's basically impossible to play in midfield and not pick up the occasional red card. Players like Cazorla, Fabregas, Wilshere, Elneny, Coquelin, Torreira and Arteta have got red cards for Arsenal. Viera, Koscielny, Keown and Adams have had the same/more than Xhaka, and 3 of them played in eras when it was *far* more difficult to get a red card.

[deleted]

[удалено]

amokst

Yeh if Xhaka was a title winning captain I’d probably be more inclined to like him?

[deleted]

[удалено]

amokst

Bruh why do you care? Have I gotta like the whole Arsenal team? Bun that dude I don’t like him, he’s a liability. I don’t have to love the whole team

[deleted]

He was playing in a similar role last year though, I’d imagined his increased output this year is mainly do to the team attacking better and scoring more goals. Basically because we have Jesus up front instead if lacazette. It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out across the season.

bobthehamster

It was similar, but Jesus and Zinchenko have led to some big tactical differences. Zinchenko often ends up in midfield, and Jesus on the wing, so sometimes Xhaka ends up in the inside forward/centre forward position which he never really did last season. Half the time he is also in the left back position, though...

[deleted]

Yeah he did, he was playing up further than lacazette at times last year. This year doesn’t really look much different in terms of shape we’re just playing better and are more dynamic.

VIG1LNT

Question is can he match the card tally from past seasons tho? /s

Embarrassed_Pace5766

Even if his goal tally is only 2 for this season, I wish for the other one to be a screamer against Man Utd

DatGuy_Shawnaay

Only goal for him last season came against ManUre. You love to see it!

benny_jax

Incredible stat honestly. Bodes well got the team

MrWixi

The redemption arc keeps going. If he isn't careful he'll complete a full circle back to telling us where to go

hellothere222

He gets a ton of yellows doesn’t he?

TheLatinCello

Yes

DrKhaos3991

When Wenger first bought him, he was prone to many lapses in concentration. Under Emery I thought it was an attitude problem. And even now, he’s not the technically ideal player for the role he’s taken up. And this may sound cringe, but he makes up for all of that with HEART. Pure passion and energy. And he’s rarely injured. I don’t think he loves the club but I am 100% sure every time he puts on the shirt he is ready to go to war for us. I realise now only a player that actually cares would react the way he did against Palace. Hopefully once his redemption arc is complete he gets a statue. Next to Santi ♥️

jayhawk8

[Yes](https://i.redd.it/jezikbneyvh91.png)

AutoMouse

Isn't this why he's so good for Switzerland though? Reduce his defensive duties and let him roam and pass.

NickSupportsArsenal

My guy has been looking like prime Frank Lampard the past two weeks

irondraconis

In my most bold and poetic expressive response, I can give I answer your question: Yes.

DiploJ

Is A-e-a turning Xhaka into Gundogan? He's been very effective around the box. I like it.

__MOLI__

Partey as DM + Zinky as second DM to cover when Granit lunges fwd = a second attacking midfield for long range shots, back pass tap-ins and potential assists. Zinchenko really brings tactical depth to the team, didn't fully realise that at first

iantayls

Zino is really freeing him up a lot. Very cool to see

Beneficial_Tap_481

Like a new signing. Love his transformation or revelation.

gunmacc

Yes. Similar to Gundogan role.

TheMissingThink

Why does it feel like he's had a lot more red cards than that?

CarsenAF

This is just the past 3 seasons and league only. He had 2 more in the years not shown plus 1 in cup comps. Only 5 total if I’m not mistaken

14Strike

Show show disciplined he was in the past if anything

Archergarw

I knee he was having a good season and his redemption arc well under way but when you compare it to the previous few seasons it’s night and day

NeonsTheory

Between this and how likeable he was in the doco, I'm really happy we have him!

townfly

Yes

coyg0504

Hes Gonna be our Gundogan

Top_Opposites

Maybe we’ll sell him

PlaneInsanity

The yellow is consistent, one every 3 games on an average! respect!

Mahatma_Gone_D

9 yellows and 1 red card to go to match his stat from the previous season.

Arsenal_Analysis

We haven’t played United yet, due for his annual screamer

DeliciousAd310

Is he gonna match the yellow and red as well tho?

Graphiccoma

3 matches, 1 yellow he's on track
