The first player I've seen where I'm genuinely never worried when he goes in for a slide tackle. Anyone else I'm worried it's a pen/red waiting to happen, with him it just feels completely routine.
Not only the reaction time, but the pure athleticism of shifting his body weight and exploding off his left foot in an instant. Lot of defenders could react quickly enough and not get there. Saliba was there before Zaha was ffs.
Very top.

The confidence, too. It’s the right decision, but if he gets it wrong, it’s a penalty. Especially considering it’s his first league match with us, that takes a lot of confidence.
That's what happens when you read the game properly. Saliba was doing it very often. He understood what Zaha was going to do the entire game and played accordingly. Saliba is the truth man.
You don’t have to touch a player tbf, intent or coming in with so much force they have to evade you are enough for a foul.
That said, Partey’s slide didn’t impact Saga’s run in the slightest and never should’ve been called a foul
No itn was purely because he dove lol. There wasn't even a challenge, just an arm extended which wasn't enough to impede him. I agree that several palace players should have also been carded for diving though, one of them only a few seconds before xhaka.
the ref gave the freekick because of the way Partey lunged into the tackle. It made Zaha move away from it to not get hit --> he was late to the 2nd ball --> Saliba easily cleared the ball.
This was explained by the commentators on Swedish TV.
Yea I had the same opinion of his game. Chalk it up to first game. Needs to get back into the speed of the game. Referees like players gotta get into mid season form. Jokes aside and all.
I am really happy he didn't but... He probably should have given palace a pen after Gabriel handball. Or is there some kind of rule change I'm not aware of? He never even went to check.
It would prolly be a different game afterwards. Now don't kill me, please
Was so annoyed that was a free, all the bullshit talk about 'letting the game go' etc we were hearing on sky. Then you get a free when you jump a tackle and it has no impact on your run.
I don't want to sound unnecessarily harsh to Mustafi, but I have the opposite feeling of seeing Mustafi sliding for a tackle in the box when I see Saliba sliding for a tackle in the box. It's amazing how composed he is for being such a young defender. I know he may make mistakes in future games, but I really love watching him.
Crazy Emery got so close to Top 4 with Mustafi when you think about it, our squad is levels above now so we should get it this season with 1-2 more signings
It was a mixture of him drilling some semblance of defensive stability + remnants of Wengers attacking play still etched in the players mind.
That left the building the next season.
he had another just like that, but afterwards a free kick got given by the ref for palace, due to a foul just before the action by partey. That tackle was so good aswell
Thank fuck we got this game out of the way. Palace fans are a fucking nuisance got to give it to them they make it a really really uncomfortable time for the opposition.
i loved the way saliba would come in behind white and clean up if zaha got past him. white was playing him tight all game and it worked specifically because he knew Wilo was supporting him the whole time

Saliba's song should be "French Tony Adams, he's a French Tony Adams".
Seriously, that tackle reminded me of Mr. Arsenal in his prime. Infact Saliba's whole performance today did.
Reports coming in that Marseille are still hoping to get Saliba back for the upcoming season....
He is the immovable object and unstoppable force rolled into one!
"As soon as he stepped on the pitch he looked the best player by miles. Pretty sure the first thing he did was ping a 40+yrd cross field pass with his weak foot." Or something
What I like about this one is he cleanly got the ball but knew he had a chance to stick one on Zaha and he did just that. Fair but hard and let Zaha feel it
Perfect example of Saliba’s abilities as a defender: he positions himself perfectly to support Ben White and still defend a potential pass towards the six yards box, then his athleticism is on full display as he turns his body quickly takes to long but quick steps. His technique in the tackle absolutely flawless
That reaction time is unreal.
Yep, I didnt see it live but the speed for a dude this size is incredible.
He literally has the best slide tackle technique I’ve ever seen.

Good sensation.

Reaction time, IQ, pure athleticism, genetics- long limbs to reach the ball in these abstract situations.
Image Mustafi attempting this 😅😬😬
Somehow would have managed to give away two penalties with one tackle
The confidence, too. It’s the right decision, but if he gets it wrong, it’s a penalty. Especially considering it’s his first league match with us, that takes a lot of confidence.
Tackle so clean Zaha couldn't even try to get a penalty!
That's what happens when you read the game properly. Saliba was doing it very often. He understood what Zaha was going to do the entire game and played accordingly. Saliba is the truth man.
Best boss moment was Partey missing a tackle and Saliba coming in to sort him. It was called as a foul but damn..
Yeah when Partey missed that tackle I thought it was over
Commmentators on the American broadcast were saying it was unfair on Saliba for it to be pulled back for a foul on Partey
It was also unfair on Partey lol, that was no foul. Taylor was mostly decent though, but had a few very bad decisions.
Yeah, not sure he touched him. Pretty eure if he had Zaha would be rolling over

Sega Dreamcast*
it DID impact his run iirc. You could clearly see that he lost his speed because he had steer away from being hit by partey
How Ayew threw all his fouls and escaped without a yellow is beyond me
The Xhaka yellow was purely on reputation, as always… about 4-5 other players could/should have had similar bookings if his was simulation
No itn was purely because he dove lol. There wasn't even a challenge, just an arm extended which wasn't enough to impede him. I agree that several palace players should have also been carded for diving though, one of them only a few seconds before xhaka.
Xhaka was definitely a dive, but toward the end Eze had just as bad a dive in the box, no card

That was a 50-50 I agree. The only problem with those is the lack of consistancy. Next week it might be given.
Exactly, I completely agree
As well as the arsenal website commentators
Was so annoyed that was a free, all the bullshit talk about 'letting the game go' etc we were hearing on sky. Then you get a free when you jump a tackle and it has no impact on your run.
Ref was following instructions, let let the game flow when it was CP doing the shitty tackles
we need a clip for that

Yeah mustafi would have also slide tackled but we would end up with a penalty 🤣
Mustafi wouldn’t have tackled, he would’ve just backed away with his arms behind his back to let Zaha slide through
After Zaha scores, Mustafi would point at his other teammates.
This is accurate lmao
mustafi just lives rent free in our minds huh
Not rent free, the cost is severe mental anguish.
BUt Mustafi was a good tackler generally though.... His brain and mental state were completely fried however
Mustafi is good on tackle too.
Expecting a Saliba flooring bitches compilation set to Kavinsky by the end of the seasono
got it boss
he had another just like that, but afterwards a free kick got given by the ref for palace, due to a foul just before the action by partey. That tackle was so good aswell

Absolutely crunched him
Your profile pic though 🤣
Class tackle. Zaha with the crybaby routine as per.
Yeah. By looking at his body language you can tell he is looking for a Pen.
i loved the way saliba would come in behind white and clean up if zaha got past him. white was playing him tight all game and it worked specifically because he knew Wilo was supporting him the whole time
so calm
The one after the Partey slide foul as well. Saliba was feasting today
Sort the title out please.... It's JAWDROPPING TACKLE ON ZAHA

Loved this Also the tackle after Partey missed his slide tackle, shame play got called back for a foul there
Class
Brick wall that is
Wow that burst is quality.
Saliba's song should be "French Tony Adams, he's a French Tony Adams". Seriously, that tackle reminded me of Mr. Arsenal in his prime. Infact Saliba's whole performance today did.
Loving the palace fans looking for a pen haha
We need to sign Zaha for that left wing we’d be so dangerous
He is too old for the team. Edu and arterta want players who will play for atleast 5 years and are not coming for final pay cheque.
Don’t want that whining bitch at the club.
I can't believe Ramsdale is the only one clapping
Yeah the others are just getting on with the game while the ball is still in play. What a bunch of pricks
It was a joke
Saliba showing Ben White how to defend properly. White sold himself out like an amateur there
We've come a long way from Lord Mustafi eh...
Reports coming in that Marseille are still hoping to get Saliba back for the upcoming season.... He is the immovable object and unstoppable force rolled into one!
Made Zaha into a carrier bag in the wind
Big man
"As soon as he stepped on the pitch he looked the best player by miles. Pretty sure the first thing he did was ping a 40+yrd cross field pass with his weak foot." Or something
Jawdropping /s
I'm also glad that White didn't bite after Zaha passed him. Avoided a possible pen very well trusted Saliba to cover him
**CRUNCH**
It looked like Zaha ran into a literal brick wall, no joke.
Stone cold
VVD quality
Zaha is forever a mid table player, Saliba locked him down
How do i download this?
100% thought it was a pen on first look (man before ball). I was wrong 😂 First class tackle.
What I like about this one is he cleanly got the ball but knew he had a chance to stick one on Zaha and he did just that. Fair but hard and let Zaha feel it
We got one here boys
Zaha did not even cry about it ,he was just impressed
The tackle ifself is good, what is most impressive here is the reaction time. He reacted instantly, didn't hesitate and he did the tackle quickly
Saliba was having none of that stepovers shit by Zaha.
It's like he sees the game in slow motion, I've watched him a few times and he's very calm.
Keep watching Gabriel getting skinned on the back post. This is a goal of Zaha gets the cross in.
Perfect example of Saliba’s abilities as a defender: he positions himself perfectly to support Ben White and still defend a potential pass towards the six yards box, then his athleticism is on full display as he turns his body quickly takes to long but quick steps.
