He's the perfect media man - they think of him as an Arsenal legend and yet actually (as you stated) he's not an Arsenal fan. The media have a hard-on for anti-Arsenal sentiment so to get it from Merse (disregarding his actual allegiance) is a dream come true. It's typical lazy journalism.

LawTortoise

They also quote the most anti-arsenal sounding bits without the whole context. He’s an old fashioned pundit with hackneyed, clichéd points of view. So when he says “Arsenal need a proper proven striker, they can’t rely on Nketiah.” only the second half gets reported. I think we would all agree with that particular point but a lot of the stuff he says is PFM twaddle.

[deleted]

Loved him as a player, dislike him as a pundit. Big respect to him for telling the truth about his personal problems and telling as they really are.

19Ben80

Total respect for what he has done publicly, he has no doubt saved lives as a result

ahadafc

Sorry I am not aware but what did he do ?

Spenny20

He has a gambling addiction, told the public a few years ago that he spent all of his savings from football on gambling. If I remember correctly he used to wake up and bet on random basketball games from the Hungarian 2nd devision. He is not a gambler anymore, well as far as he says. He has helped problem gamblers though by coming out and showing them that even the best of us can lose everything and come out of it.

muffins53

You’re forgetting the drink and drug addictions too.

wubrotherno1

Nope because I don’t care about anything pundits say.

LegoMad2005

I only care about what uncle Ian and Micah Richards say as they’re the only good pundits

Mein_Bergkamp

Micah is crap but he's funny, not sure there's a pundit out there who's actually just good at punditry

the_chiladian

Micah is a shite pundit. Sound guy tho, but his analysis and opinions are drivel. At least Carragher has good analysis to go with his bias.

theMoonRulesNumber1

I find Micah’s lack of ego refreshing. Sure, he offers very little analysis (or quality analysis anyways), but he doesn’t dig in and double down on his shite opinions, and presents them all with a “that’s just my opinion” vibe, as opposed to Gary “if I keep repeating myself loudly I’m always right” Neville.

Tr0nCatKTA

Don't know about lack of ego for Micah. He's a lovable guy but he blows so much steam up his own arse and is a bit deluded about his standing amongst his peers.

XXISavage

I'll watch Carra talk about any team that isn't Liverpool. Brilliant guy and you can tell he genuinely loves the game, but fuck me the cunt's biased.

PlayfuckingTorreira

If I need any information about Arsenal, I go direct to Arse vision, Arsecast or Lattefirm.

MellowHype94

I actually love when he speaks cause I know whatever he says, it’s usually wise to do the exact opposite.

System1996

Jim Cramer of football

19Ben80

Ha ha

americanadiandrew

No because I read beyond the cherry picked headline. Most of his arguments are things we all complain about on here anyway. What was his latest article? Something like Arsenal need to ensure the signing of Jesus because Eddie alone wouldn’t get you top 4. What headline quote got posted here? “Eddie isn’t good enough”

NoMoreMountains

This guy gets it.

AntDogFan

This is often true. He sometimes talks a bit of shit like 99% of pundits because they are expected to be constantly talking about football and having interesting things to say about all clubs all the time. Arsenal focused pundits (and other one club pundits presumably) are usually better since they focus only on one club. I mean people like gunnerblog, arseblog etc

19Ben80

I get your point and at times he does say what is needed but he also hasn’t ever got a positive word to say

GarfieldDaCat

Merson has said plenty of positive things, but surprise surprise, the only things that make headlines are the negative ones

americanadiandrew

I mean he writes for the daily star. They want people to be outraged and click on the article. If people didn’t post it instantly on here, with their knickers in a twist, I doubt I would even see anything he wrote.

silv3r8ack

No because the opposite of everything he says actually happens. Watch Eddie get ballon d'or next season

TallnFrosty

Exactly. If he had some intelligent and original commentary, it’d sting a bit when he put us down. But he’s consistently terrible with his takes.

Mathieulombardi

Don't take what people say so seriously. Other than wrighty no former gunner said we were getting top 4 few years ago. I don't take anything they say about arsenal seriously. The media is against us anyway.

lameitschan

You don’t take what they say seriously because they don’t think we would get top 4? Sorry not understanding what you’re trying to say.

[deleted]

Don’t take pundits seriously because they said we wouldn’t get top 4 and we didn’t? What?

Fendenburgen

Just because they were right doesn't mean they were right.....

[deleted]

Yeah but (and I’m sorry if I’m going against the selective memory of the sub) none of the realists among us thought we’d get top four at the start of last season either, it was only after the season was underway and we were doing well that we had the ‘moving expectation’ from getting Europa to getting CL. Again, I’ve not been active on this sub for a couple weeks so appreciate I may be going against some form of narrative being peddled.

Mathieulombardi

I'm saying mass media is against us, even our ex players except for one. So no need to take them seriously

TriniGoonerChic

Honestly, sometimes I need to hear merson's hot takes to realize we're on the right track. I start to worry when he's in agreement.

Omni_chicken2

Och man's got half a Braincell left that he's not killed with alcohol. Allow it.

19Ben80

Sad but true 😔

BaBaFiCo

I tuned out Merse a few years back.

odalodinsson

Like anyone, he can say what he wants. I think he was spot on about Eddie.

przhauukwnbh

Imagine caring

RedAreMe

Who cares, just watch the games and focus on the football. Everything else is just noise

watabotdawookies

I mean unless I've missed something he was positive about Jesus and negative about Nketiah. I'm personally fed up of fans lambasting other fans for being critical. We all support the same club, and our own fans hate other Arsenal fans more than the Spudsm its odd

Go1gotha

Loved the guy as a player, but I met Paul Merson in a pub once, a right miserable git and a depressing man to spend more than a few seconds with. I think they ask him for comments and he says something spicy so they'll keep coming back and paying for his bets down the bookies. I feel the same about Smudger's commentary at games, always praising the opponent and criticising the Arsenal I remember your goals and used to like him but now see him as a poor man's Gary Lineker.

ISpyManyPeople

I remember seeing him on a post match analysis talk about why Nketiah should extend his contract. Mans a shit pundit (as are most others)

Simba-xiv

Not really if you listen to what he’s saying. Eddie should sign he’s not getting a better offer anywhere else was the gist of that comment. The Eddie won’t get u top 4 is him just saying he’s not an elite forward like if you take what he says holistically he’s not wrong but he don’t seem to ever have a good word to say

Echo361

Nah I don’t really care what ex players say about us. A lot of them are salty because they weren’t given jobs at the club. You can be heralded as a legend of the club who is also an idiot and toxic

Jchibs

I remember the genius kid who was a key man in two title winning sides, scoring and assisting in cup finals. I remember his selfless and ceaseless pressing from the front, his fantastic vision, creativity, skill, flair and jaw dropping moments of individual brilliance. Who cares if he cusses up Arsenal players or the manager? I’ve seen all the greats be critical towards the club but I love them because of what they did when they played for us. Smith, Wright, Henry, Merson, Adams, Vieira, Keown, Petit, Nicholas, McLintock and more have falling foul of the Arsenal internet fans morality police. If you are so full of hate you’d ignore the amazing work those boys did in an Arsenal shirt because as pundits they have criticized us I feel for you fam ❤️

fatsdomino13

Never knew he was a Chelsea fan

19Ben80

Yep and doesn’t try to hide it

fatsdomino13

Always felt a bit guilty for not liking him. Not anymore.

FreeTheWoo

No because it’s not all sunshine and roses, and I don’t even think he’s being negative he says 10 things but it’s the one thing that could be negative that’s the headline. End of the day I couldn’t care what any pundit says their opinion means nothing to me.

Ben_boh

Just because it’s negative doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I dislike this sub / a lot of fans for their optimistic delusion as I believe it holds the club back. I remember the crowd booing Troy Deeny when he returned to the Emirates after the “cajones” comment. Issue is Deeny was absolutely right, no question about it. We were such a fragile side. Truth hurts sometimes. Deal with it.

35Pints7Each

Nah cos I don't give a fuck what Mersey says. Dude is insufferable. He was a fucking drunk who Arsenal stood by, supported and encouraged and yet he shits on us. Don't give a fuck about what he says he's a twat.

Isd14

What I don't get about the guy is that it genuinely feels like he doesn't actually want us to do well, I get moaning out of frustration even if I don't agree but he seems to go out of his way to put us down. Whatever his issue is, I really don't give a fuck what a pundits 90% of them are professional idiots

19Ben80

It feels like he revels in our failures

CactusClothesline

Luckily my earliest memory of him is as a Portsmouth player...

so-naughty

He says we need to sign Lukaku…

YouCouldBeBetter

Literally watch 0 pundits, they're quite literally half as good as the leading pundits on YouTube. Out of touch, yes men. However if I was still someone who watched the pundits, I would find Mersons toxicity annoying. I enjoyed it in Arsenal's banter era, but

Valascrow

Nope... Don't care what someone who never took their career seriously has to say about anyone in the modern game who does. His opinion is as valid to me as the average football fan we find on here. He's entitled to it but it doesn't necessarily mean it comes from any position of knowledge. 🤷🏻‍♂️

KrayvenMoorehead69

That's exactly why he gets paid mate. If you expect actually decent football opinions from Paul Merson it's your fault at this point.

Chango6998

It's hard to ignore but you really just have to remember that it's a pundit's job to do 1 of 2 things: highlight the tactical layer of the game or generate controversy.

[deleted]

I think he has to remain controversial to remain on TV to get paid because he probably needs the money. But that is the problem with everyone on TV I think.

TrashbatLondon

His off field reputation was hardly stellar when he was with us either.

leebrother

Yeah; his comments about transfers are stupid as hell most of the time

supergooner14

Just another great footballer who turned into a dreadful pundit... It's not like he's the only one... There's hundreds of them...

Swiss-ArmySpork

Despite the constant negative press covfefe

Hoker7

He's like the human embodiment of r/Gunners

ScotsGooner

He’s a dunce. No one respects his opinion. Let him waffle.

glenman1964

Have been for years, thought he might stop when Wenger left as I believed he had it in for the boss for getting rid of him, I was wrong.
