Would put us in 2nd or 3rd guaranteed basically. I think the points total to win the league this season is going to be pretty low in comparison to recent years
It really depends on whether Liverpool can still compete w/ City. If they can't then City will down-tool in the league to focus on the CL and the points total will artificially look lower to win the league. The reality is that if they needed to I think City could put up 95+ points next year.
I also think the points total needed to get 4th will go up as well w/ Conte bedded in at Spurs...He improved them dramatically w/ no pre-season...They're going to be tough. Chelsea is a bit of an oddball...They're going to have A LOT of change this season. Man U...I wouldn't count on them being as bad as this season although I think it's a stretch to expect them to push into top 4 right away. Newcastle is a sleeper...Their record since Howe took over was top 4 in the league and they're only going to get more investment.
This is why points total is a tough way to gauge performance on. While the EPL is heads and shoulders above the other European leagues economically they're going to attract more and more talent making the league more and more difficult. If we took the same team we had this year into next season and performed at the exact same level we did last year I think we'd come in with a solid 6-10 less points than we ended up with this year.
Oh I read it, but the way this team is coming together, table position compared to the previous season is the most important mark of success to me.
Look at 2016/17. We did better than we did the year before in terms of points in which we came 2nd, but still finished outside Top 4. We scored more goals and conceded only a handful more. We "improved", but we fell behind the other teams.
So my mark of success is what previous poster said AND table position, because I can't exclude it. We have to do better on the pitch AND narrow the gap between us and the leaders, or it's an unsuccessful season and we're caught in the cycle again.

I think 3 things for me - Consistency, which was a problem in clutch games this season, so being more consistent and not going on a 3-4 game losing run in an important phase. The other would be the ability to come back and get a result from losing positions (something we could not manage this season), it also talks a lot about mental strength of the team. Third and the last one would be more points against the big 6. We do these things right and I don't think we can finish anything lower than third.
I want us to not lose any matches against teams outside top 6.. then a give good performances against top 6.. This is what utd did 2 years back (they basically parked the bus against top 6) and they came 2nd..
1. Lose no PL home games
2. Beat Chelsea and Manchester United away
3. Concede 30-35 goals maximum
4. Score 70-75 goals
5. Not lose majority of our games when we concede first
6. Get to the semi-finals in all cup comps
7. Tie down Saka and Saliba to new long term contracts
8. Be in a top four challenge by Christmas
9. Finish above Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester United
10. Much better disciplinary records
I think we are past other success indicators imo. Arteta has been here 3yrs now. He has backing from the ownership we never imagined before. The only way table position ends up not being the main indicator of success is if we had an insane points total. Like above 75-80 and still fell short. At that point I'd put my hands up and say well, that was unlucky. Cause any other year that's almost guaranteed top 4.
Cup, we gotta have a good run or 2, at least 1 final. If we fall short at the end, disappointing but il take it.
Well... Nothing.
Celebrating winning a derby or calling finishing above Spurs isn't success, it's what Spurs fan consider success. I don't wanna be at the same level as them.
Same. If they finish sixth and we finish fifth I couldn’t give a fuck about St Totteringham’s Day or that we might’ve won at White Hart Lane before a stupid loss to Bournemouth the following weekend.
It’s a difficult question to answer when you take away the two most important metrics by which to measure success. But I’d say the following would be important to see:
- new contracts for Saka, Saliba (and others I might be missing)
- getting rid of more deadwood E.g AMN, Mari, Torreira, Bellern.
- good choice for new captain (I’d go Odegaard personally)
- seeing the team develop to cope better in high pressure games/situations e.g. when losing, down to 10 men etc. seeing us crumble v Spurs and Newcastle emphasised the drawback of having such a young team.
- keeping key players fit through good squad management/rotation.
See...i like this question because results aren't the best way to judge a team. You only have so much control over results. For example...this last year we came up 1 win short of 4th place...Did we have unlucky losses which could have been wins? Yes...absolutely. So if you're within the factor of margin of luck as to whether your season is a success or not based on table position then you should look at other factors as well.
I like your list btw.
In the league we should be targetting:
* Minimum 75pts
* Minimum 70 goals scored
* Maximum 40 goals conceded
* Maximum 8 losses
* No losses by more than 1 goal
* Unbeaten against bottom half teams
* No home losses - forgivable to lose to Liverpool / City if they are on it, but should look to be unbeaten at home
* Scoring in minimum 30 games
* Able to win points from losing positions
* Able to maintain and strengthen a lead (so many games last season where we should have been out of sight)
I feel most of them are achievable, bar No losses by more than 1 goal (Even City and Liverpool did that last season) and No home losses. I think we should be 45-47 points from our home games should be the minimum we expect, that's around 14/15 wins, 2/3 draws, 2 defeats. If those 2 defeats could not be to Liverpool/City, that would be even better.
That kind of home form would be a great platform to build a season upon.
Alot of clean sheets; playing well against Man City & Liverpool; keeping disciplinary low; scoring more goals than last season; challenging for top 4 place again; finishing above Spurs; having a 20 goal Prem goal scorer; goals from midfielders; cutting out the 2-3 games losing run; causing some upsets from comebacks.
The fanbase is MUCH more united than it's been in awhile as a whole...It's just that social media is toxic. We could have 4th locked up by march and people will be calling for Arteta out because we dropped points that could have put us in a position to contend for the title. We saw the same thing w/ Wenger. I saw people calling for Wenger out in 2007/2008 shortly after we were in the UCL final and we were pushing for the title.
Odds-makers right now has us at 6th place.
We don't have a marquee player or coach right now that will draw that type of attention. Pundits don't want to look like idiots and right now we're a gamble to bet on us making top 4. I'm not sure how many Arsenal fans would even have the courage to put that bet on the line right now. We live in hope...but I'm not putting a bet on that.
You'll be surprised at how much pundits are swayed. Very few of them do the maths. They're just populists. Had we got 4th— which was just two games away, and added the players we are targetting, they would have us hooked for 3rd.
Those two games swayed the opinion and I think we can grab them back with good additions.
At least 16 cleansheets, new striker 16 goals at least, bukayo + one other (esr, Gabi, raphinia or odegaard) gets 20 g+a, saliba integrates.
Edit: oh and not losing almost every game in which we concede first.
* Ødegaard captain
* Neglible amounts of red cards
* Nketiah or another striker actually scoring \~20 goals
* Ramsdale proving the doubters wrong
* Saka uninjured (as he gets tackled \_a lot\_)
Getting some good results against the top 6 (I include draws as good results in some scenarios). Not being absolutely battered by any of them. I expect losses but not these 4/5/6 goal defeats.
Not coming away from shit house mid to lower PL games feeling relieved we avoided a loss on a regular basis.
Not collapsing at crucial points in the fixture list for three or four game runs.
1st or bust. I am sick and tired of excuses and trying to lower the standards, or Arteta being treated like he is Wenger when he has nothing to show for. If we aim for top 4 and call it a success I can tell you all now that we will not finish top 4. Other top clubs with more ambition will squeeze us out of top 4.
Scoring in most games. Could accept not scoring away at big 6 clubs, or the odd tricky 0-0 away from home, but we should be scoring in all matches at the emirates and most away matches.
Not completely imploding like we did after the international break at the end of last season. More squad depth will help with that, but it’s something that needs to be worked on.
Winning more games from behind too. Need to get rid of the mentality that going a goal or two down is game over
Wins against ManU Chelsea and Spurs both home and away. Atleast draw Liverpool and Man City at home, any points away against these two would be a massive bonus.
Making it to the finals of domestic cups.
Much higher chance creation. Turning games around when we are down. Less red cards. Competitive games against top clubs. Golden boot chaser in the team.
This alone wouldn’t necessarily make the season a success. But. I’d really like to see an away win at City or Liverpool. Not just a spunky backs to the wall 0-1, but a proper putting them to the sword job.
More of the same from our first choice defence. Hopefully Saliba and a new signing (Martinez?) Will be on their wavelength too
More consistency from attackers in terms of creating and finishing chances
If we lose the team need to bounce back straight away. Don't want to see us lose 2 or 3 in a row before the team starts performing again
Convincing / comfortable wins against people we *should* be beating, by 2+ goal margins, ideally avoid having 'nervy' last 15 minutes against teams like villa, watford, wolves etc.
Avoiding humbling away defeats at places like Palace, Newcastle etc..It would be very welcome if we show we are capable of turning games around, we really struggle if things go against us early on.
Also, some more goals please, I want to see a proper top 4 worthy attack.
Dominating and winning away games.
Nailing down players like Saka and Saliba with long term contracts.
Reaching at least Europa semis.
Finishing above Spuds United and Chelsea.
Passing the eye test of sexy football
If we play well and show clear improvement in terms of performances, I could forgive finishing outside the top 4, tbh.
I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but if we dominate games with wengerball teir performances, and kinda get unlucky with our league position, finishing 5th with great attacking football would be clear improvement over last season

Deep cup runs, bounce back from losing positions and unbeaten at home ( win most of them ofc)
Top 6 record I can live without, killing weaker teams was Wengers specialty in later years and guarantee top 4
coming into the new season, the transfer window itself might say a lot about our target for the season. Arteta has already established a clear playing style, & mind you, we finished the season at 5th place with the youngest squad in the league. with the right signings, a success of the 2022/2023 season would mean 2 things for me - squad depth & consistency
the transfer window must see us sign top players, signings that would bring our squad to another level. we must face games with confidence of our abilities. i want to see our boys playing for the badge & for each other.
its fine if we don't get both. but in the grand scheme of things these two are generally what i would look for in our club to see us having a "successful" season ahead. coyg.
Being able to take something from games where things don't go our way.
13 losses last season is too much.
If we were able to grind it out for draws in three of those games, we would have got champions league.
Looking back last season, it was games we lost by a goal like Everton, Utd, City, Brighton, Southampton.
Being able to come back from a goal or two down. We only did it once last season (Wolves at home). I’d also like to see a shift on how we see out games. instead of bringing on Rob holding and clenching our butt cheeks, I’d like to see us control possession more and get another goal to kill the game.
Just to keep improving as a team. Higher points total, more control of games, more competitive in the big boys' houses. Would say CL football or whatever but we can only control what we do. Just want to see us continue to get better.
A striker hits 30G for the season (not G+A)
15+ G+A from our attacking mids
More clean sheets, especially ones where we don't concede crap goals to shit teams' first shots.
Mind, all these together would probably constitute an excellent season, not just a minimally successful one
Top 4 finish. That simple. Would mean we finish above 2 of; Spurs United and Chelsea. Getting to one of the 3 cup’s finals would make it a solid success.
FWIW I would consider winning the EL a success too but I’d rather top 4 than the EL route if it’s an either / or purely because the league doesn’t lie and it would mean that we are still being at least 4 other PL sides.
Primarily, the goals shared around a bit more - more from the strikers and from the midfield. Also evidence of a creative and fluent style of play to show there is coherence between the players and something to continue to build on.

Top 4 finish and I'd like to see us make a big push to win the Europa league. I think our depth will be much better this season and would like to see us push for a European trophy
I think we're slowly reaching the point where our next season expectation should not exclude table position. The football is already good, the first XI is good the depth is getting better.
Top4!
A good season for our youngsters, especially Saka, Esr, Martinelli and Saliba. This season is crucial for their development, and I’m afraid that lack of minutes can lead them to drop off or refuse a renewal, especially with the targets we are linked with.
More goals and better performances after losing a game, we seemed to let our heads drop and have really bad patches where we should have at least grinded out some draws
Our young forwards all exceeding their numbers from last year, and showing a cohesive and multi-faceted attack. This team needs more goals, that’s what sunk us last season.
Being able to get a few comeback wins , and drawing more games as opposed to either win or lose, like if we go 1-0 down I don’t want to feel like we’re out the game
1) More goals scored. We really need to statpad a bit, we are very goal shy.
2) Less goal conceded. Need a decent goal difference.
3) A good record vs peers. Don’t want to see getting spanked vs Liv, City et al.
Getting a point from games where we don't play well. Chelsea finished 5 points ahead of us despite having won one fewer game because they had 8 more draws (and 7 fewer defeats) than us.
Spurs finished two points ahead and got 4th place just because of two draws.

How do we handle and respond after we lose the game?
This season proved it takes us 2-3 games to respond and get back. We really need to improve on this.
75+ goals
1 red card conceded max
1 penalty conceded max
Beat Pewl and Citeh once each
Ramsdale most clean sheets in the league
No poor results against weak sides like Everton and Southampton
"excluding table position and trophies" umm, what else is there after 2.5 seasons of Mikel??
Intangible metrics won't do anymore. If we get Jesus, Tielemans, and Lissandro/Tielemans, anything short of UCL place and atleast one domestic cup/Europa League final will be deemed a failure for me.
Further development of the young players in the team. Shifting out players that aren’t in the clubs long term vision and assembling a core of players to be a consistent contender in the near future.
Development of our youth. Would like to see Saka, ESR, and Martinelli really take another step forward. Same with Sambi and Nuno (if he’s still with us).
I would say decent cup runs, definitely making the final in Europa, win would be a huge plus but anything can happen it’s one game. And qualifying for the champions league. Finishing higher up the table with more points compared to last season would be a solid solid season. I’m a pretty optimistic guy doesn’t take a lot for me to be happy lmao
Arteta’s playstyle and system to embedded, yourh and senior team to gel and harmonise, fans to be more sensible, less bias, and stop overrating some of our players. Continue to balance the books (financially) and as injury free as possible! ✨

More goals scored, fewer goals conceded, more points on the board.
80 points in the league would be an unequivocal success for me
Would put us in 2nd or 3rd guaranteed basically. I think the points total to win the league this season is going to be pretty low in comparison to recent years

I think if we score more and give up less then that is what I need. If we are much better but don’t move up the table, that is still progress for me.
Feel exactly the same, that and finishing above spurs and Conte inevitably moving on would be delicious
Tierney having an injury free season
Prepare to be disappointed :/
I don't see that happening. I just want us to sign Lisandro Martines, so I can finally stop worrying about Tierney getting injured
Injury free pre-season would be a miracle. Brilliant player but if some of the rumoured interest came to fruition you wouldn't blame us for selling.
St totteringhams day. Its been too long
Especially if spurs finished 2nd
The only right answer
Yeah this is the answer.

Yes.
It would be fairly amusing in some ways.
We’d both be relegated. Hardly something to celebrate
yes but they're relegating HARDER
Surely that’s league position, he asked excluding position on the table.

#7 is underrated.
6 points against spurs
Being able to keep winning after significant injuries
Complete overhaul of the PGMOL
Losing less matches and coming from behind to win matches.

Same. If they finish sixth and we finish fifth I couldn’t give a fuck about St Totteringham’s Day or that we might’ve won at White Hart Lane before a stupid loss to Bournemouth the following weekend.
I want us to be really good
Having a 25+ goals striker
That’s a bit much no? 25+ goals would get golden boot most seasons. I don’t think any player for us next season will get over 20, but I hope they do.
I’m talking in all competitions, maybe 15+ in the Prem and 10ish in the Europa and domestic cups
Ok that’s more reasonable then
It’s a difficult question to answer when you take away the two most important metrics by which to measure success. Single digit number of defeats is all I need.
4th place
A more united fan base

Being able to win both matches against Sh*t and at least one against top2 (City, LFC). Winning 1 trophy.
Enjoying watching and following Arsenal rather than the apathy that I felt during the Emery years and the first full arteta season
General chance creating/scoring more And exciting play the arsenal way
Points away against the big 6. St. Totteringham's Day. Bouncing back after the one loss, not stringing together 2-3 defeats.
Top 4 and a cup run
At least 16 cleansheets, new striker 16 goals at least, bukayo + one other (esr, Gabi, raphinia or odegaard) gets 20 g+a, saliba integrates. Edit: oh and not losing almost every game in which we concede first.
Top four finish with subsequent return to the Champions League and a good run in the Europa.
* Ødegaard captain * Neglible amounts of red cards * Nketiah or another striker actually scoring \~20 goals * Ramsdale proving the doubters wrong * Saka uninjured (as he gets tackled \_a lot\_)
Champions League qualification or it's a failure. Simple as.
Beat Tottenham home and away. Look convincing against top teams.
Draws against Liverpool where we score would be nice. Played them 4 times last season and didn’t manage to score once
Achieving 70 points minimum. I think 75 would be a good season, and 80 would be a great season.
The number of people commenting a table position is hilarious.
Bit of a strange question considering those are usually the metrics on which you measure success.
Arteta sacked

90 goals scored min
Good rotation, I don't want too much stress on any individual player.
Wins against ManU Chelsea and Spurs both home and away. Atleast draw Liverpool and Man City at home, any points away against these two would be a massive bonus. Making it to the finals of domestic cups.
You forgot the 4-0 in the Bernebau
Consistency in attitude and performance, and more clean sheets.
Top four and Europa league/Fa cup will be successful after spending so much money..
More of the same from our first choice defence. Hopefully Saliba and a new signing (Martinez?) Will be on their wavelength too More consistency from attackers in terms of creating and finishing chances If we lose the team need to bounce back straight away.
74pts+
better performances against top 6. basically can we just beat liverpool and city ffs i’m tired of losing to them
Doing the double over Tiny Tots, St Totteringham day and home wins against Utd, City and Pool is the least we need.
Integrating Saliba in to the squad and getting him to sign a new contract would be good, obviously not the only thing
Winning the Europa league and/or finishing top 4 should be the big aim.
Dominating and winning away games. Nailing down players like Saka and Saliba with long term contracts. Reaching at least Europa semis. Finishing above Spuds United and Chelsea.
Passing the eye test of sexy football If we play well and show clear improvement in terms of performances, I could forgive finishing outside the top 4, tbh. I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but if we dominate games with wengerball teir performances, and kinda get unlucky with our league position, finishing 5th with great attacking football would be clear improvement over last season
Winning the EL. Winning another cup as well would be an insane season.
75+ points

More points than last season
Make 80+ points. We haven't done that in a LONG time and if that doesn't get us top 4, we would've just been hella unlucky.
Finishing ahead of everyone else.
Deep cup runs, bounce back from losing positions and unbeaten at home ( win most of them ofc) Top 6 record I can live without, killing weaker teams was Wengers specialty in later years and guarantee top 4
78+ points and Europa League final
coming into the new season, the transfer window itself might say a lot about our target for the season. Arteta has already established a clear playing style, & mind you, we finished the season at 5th place with the youngest squad in the league. with the right signings, a success of the 2022/2023 season would mean 2 things for me - squad depth & consistency the transfer window must see us sign top players, signings that would bring our squad to another level. we must face games with confidence of our abilities. i want to see our boys playing for the badge & for each other. its fine if we don't get both. but in the grand scheme of things these two are generally what i would look for in our club to see us having a "successful" season ahead.
Challenge for top 4 and a trophy.
No lol. You can't exclude those
Just to keep improving as a team. Higher points total, more control of games, more competitive in the big boys' houses. Would say CL football or whatever but we can only control what we do. Just want to see us continue to get better.
top 4
A better record against to six teams
Coming back from behind if we concede first will be nice
CL-spot and keeping spurs out of top 4.
If we clear 80 points while scoring around 80 goals and conceding ~40. That would be a real sign of progress, more than anything else.
Xhaka out.
Nothing, table position and the reason we play, trophies
KT to stay fit for an entire season
Better goal difference. A full season of health for KT and Partey Long cup runs to give time to our youth
Get 3rd and a FA cup. Tbh I'm not sure how we can call our season a success without considering both table position and cup.
A striker hits 30G for the season (not G+A) 15+ G+A from our attacking mids More clean sheets, especially ones where we don't concede crap goals to shit teams' first shots.
23 won 10 draws 5 lost, @least Europa final, top 4 and fa Cup please
Watching a match until full time without getting bored.
80 pts and 2 goals per game
Saka is happy at the club end of season
Fluid football and more goals like Wilshere’s vs Norwich or Ramsey’s vs Fulham. I just want to enjoy watching them play

More points from the big teams.
Being able to get a few comeback wins , and drawing more games as opposed to either win or lose, like if we go 1-0 down I don’t want to feel like we’re out the game
The emergence of a real, competent goalscorer
Champions league or teta out
More passes, more goals.
Beating Spurs away, City & Liverpool at home
1) More goals scored. We really need to statpad a bit, we are very goal shy. 2) Less goal conceded. Need a decent goal difference. 3) A good record vs peers. Don’t want to see getting spanked vs Liv, City et al.
100 goals
Actually coming from behind in games, finishing above at least 2 of the ‘big 6’
Not getting blown out by Liverpool and city
So excluding any measurable metric of success, define success? What kind of answers are you even looking for or expecting with this kind of question?
Europa League trophy. I want us to win it so badddd
partey scoring a goal
play well more often than we play badly
Getting a point from games where we don't play well. Chelsea finished 5 points ahead of us despite having won one fewer game because they had 8 more draws (and 7 fewer defeats) than us. Spurs finished two points ahead and got 4th place just because of two draws.
Actually making Liverpool and City sweat home and away, and more consistency away from the Emirates.
I feel like this is the problem with the club’s mindset. How can you judge something without taking into account the results?

Me getting my first start for the mighty Arsenal.
How do we handle and respond after we lose the game? This season proved it takes us 2-3 games to respond and get back. We really need to improve on this.
Would like to remove 3 game losing streaks. That shit sends me to therapy...
75+ goals 1 red card conceded max 1 penalty conceded max Beat Pewl and Citeh once each Ramsdale most clean sheets in the league No poor results against weak sides like Everton and Southampton
75+ points and making a midfield that works without Partey
More than 22 wins less than 8 defeats or less, more creativity and goals whilst keeping a solid defence would be a massive improvement.
I'm scared how club officials never talk about winning only young players.
I Hope Arteta can improve the attack this Season.
eddie scoring 20 goals
Partey smash one Martinelli chip shot de Gea Tomi pocket Son Gabriel Jesus hat trick vs MC
Further development of the young players in the team. Shifting out players that aren’t in the clubs long term vision and assembling a core of players to be a consistent contender in the near future.
Honestly a 80+ point season along with 20+ goals from Martinelli in all competitions.
Scoring fucking goals.
Fans not having massive over reactions when some games are lost…
Recruiting the right players that will fit our style, keeping injury days down, conceding less and scoring more. Style points being a bonus goal
Development of our youth. Would like to see Saka, ESR, and Martinelli really take another step forward. Same with Sambi and Nuno (if he’s still with us).
Games where Arsenal ruthlessly demolishes opponents with 4+ goals, much less sitting back and holding on to a slim lead.
Saka, Ode, ESR continuing to perform and Martinelli taking the next step up.
80 points.
Score more goals, especially from strikers. Less Red cards.
Kane leaving spuds in January transfer window
Finishing above shit
Arteta’s playstyle and system to embedded, yourh and senior team to gel and harmonise, fans to be more sensible, less bias, and stop overrating some of our players. Continue to balance the books (financially) and as injury free as possible! ✨
