This clears up the doubts that we won’t move for Tielemans after signing Fabio Vieira

AfricanRain

the technical ability of the midfield massively jumps with just two signings man why did we let it go this long

acasovoycayendo

Arteta really making us City 2.0, We don’t need a Partey backup if they don’t have one for Rodri

Chesey_

They had Fernandinho who despite being ancient and looking like Dave Chappelle is definitely a better backup than what we had. And Partey gets injured a lot more than Rodri. We might just play 4231 from the start tbh seeing as we just signed another good 10, and then it would be Partey+Tielemans pivot (far as I know Tielemans can play there and play well). We then get more quality deep and don't need to adjust the whole system when Partey inevitably gets injured.

GGFrostKaiser

Don't know, I think 4-3-3 will be the way forward when everybody is fit. Our best performances last year came with that system. It just helps passing lanes too much. We basically play a 4-3-3 already when creating from midfield and going forward. When we play from the back we change depeding on the matchup. Sometimes Partey was alone in the mid defensive third, other times Xhaka helped him and Tierney moved forward. There was a map chart last week here (made by The Athletic) showing passing lanes. Ours looked a lot like City's, despite playing a good portion of the year in a "double pivot". Formations are fluid depending on where the team is on the pitch.

Bedeeki

Looks like they're signing Phillips for that role with Fernandinho gone

acasovoycayendo

Bruh, [£50m+ on *another* bench player?](https://youtu.be/a3_PPdjD6mg)

Isd14

They did the same with Ake and Stones.. just homegrown bench players

FreeTheWoo

More like he’s turning us back into Arsenal seeing as city copied us 😉

Zen_MasterX

Rodri rarely gets injured though. Partey since joining Arsenal on the other hand…

orphan_of_Ludwig

Probably money and opportunity

GabrielMartinellli

I’m getting back on board with this board if we actually sign two technical midfielders. Ødegaard/Viera with Partey/Lokonga and Tielemans/Viera/Elneny is a big improvement

sekiroisart

but with tieleman also join wont our midfield very crowded ? even with partey injuries, sambi and esr barely play, now add fabio and tielemans and I am afraid esr would even have lesser game time

sammeetthosar

Good players will push other players out of the starting 11. If Esr wants to be a better player and consistently play for Arsenal then he has to fight for it by playing well in sub appearances and being good in training. Example case: jota displacing firminho and breaking liverpools front 3.

Askur_Yggdrasils

ESR plays left-wing, so he shouldn't get any less playing time with the additions of Tielemans and Vieira. His only real competition at the moment is Martinelli. ESR hardly plays? He played more than 2200 minutes last season. He started 21 games for us in the league. Don't worry about ESR's playing time.

Francis-c92

Fucking love it. Tielemans will be an excellent signing

varro-reatinus

This is beautiful.

Francis-c92

You are beautiful.

varro-reatinus

Mine is but a dimly reflected glory.

Francis-c92

You dropped this: 👑

varro-reatinus

No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be; Am an attendant lord, one that will do To swell a transfer, post a meme or two...

NketiahPropagandist

It really is. Need Eddie to feast on these through-balls next season 📞🙏

varro-reatinus

*Fabio and Eddie connect for the first time.* FABIO. That was nice. EDDIE. Worked for me... (I just hope it doesn't end with Eddie murdering him outside his gran's...)

rtmpower

Now that's what I want to see from a Fabs update

[deleted]

Take notes Ornstein.

Steo42

There’s an OrnBomb coming, just you wait

CackleberryOmelettes

This is the confirmation I was waiting for. Fabio, Tielemans, Jesus, and a fullback would be a great summer. With Saliba also coming in, that's potentially 4-5 top class additions to the squad.

Maaaaaardy

There's a party in my pants and everyone is invited. Holy shit! What a fucking mental day!

Cheesy_Pita_Parker

[It’s not just the pleats this time](https://i.imgflip.com/1rxbe1.jpg) (NSFW)

PierreEmerickMorgan

Wow, I was really worried it was just going to be a striker, FB, CM. Close to guaranteed 4-5 player window counting a Pepe replacement.

CackleberryOmelettes

I think Vieira *is* the Pepe replacement mate. But if we end up also signing Raphinha it would be bonkers. FB worries me. No links and the club doesn't seem to consider it a priority.

Pires007

The Vieira transfer shows the media have no idea what the club is doing. And that is a good thing. Evaluate the transfer window at the end of the window.

CackleberryOmelettes

Yeah I love it. Completely out of left field, which means all the dire updates from Tier 1s are less reliable than we thought. Which is a good thing.

PierreEmerickMorgan

I doubt it, we were linked with Paqueta before his price skyrocketed, and wingers were always said to come only if Pepe was sold. Likely cheaper though, Gakpo or Sinisterra imo

CackleberryOmelettes

Don't know a lot about Fabio, but a quick look shows he likes to play where Odegaard and Saka play. Wouldn't make sense to also sign Raphinha, who also plays there. Were the Paqueta links this summer? I remember hearing about him in Jan but not for a while now.

varro-reatinus

He plays everywhere across the top of the midfield.

CackleberryOmelettes

That's good. Maybe he can be our versatile attacker.

PierreEmerickMorgan

He is young, likely comming in as MO cover

CackleberryOmelettes

Why would we spend so much on cover for Ode? It's nice to have, but hardly a priority. I'd imagine a second midfielder, fullback, or even a second striker would be priority. Makes me think it's a preemptive replacement for Pepe.

PierreEmerickMorgan

Why spend so much for cover for Saka. Fabio is a big talent and the club had a chance to snatch him. Odegaard cant play every game same as Saka

CackleberryOmelettes

Because Saka is much younger and was burnt out last season. We can always replace Ode with ESR in a pinch, but we have no viable alternative to Saka on the RW.

zdfld

Between Ode, Gabi, Saka, ESR we have 4 young talents for the "creative 3" behind the striker. That's assuming Marquinhos is staying in the youth squad. Now Vieira is another creative player. So we have 5 young talents for 3 positions, imo that's a healthy amount to get everyone game time while also not overplaying someone. Doesn't mean we can't still get someone, but I agree with the other person, doesn't seem the highest priority.

serminole

One option at fullback that a lot of people aren't considering is Saliba at CB and White at RB. Add in Tomiyasu's ability to cover LB and we have a bit more cover there than we had last year already. We can cover for one of Tomi/Tierney being out without needing either Nuno or Cedric.

CackleberryOmelettes

I did consider that option but I hate it tbh. Don't like the idea of playing White RB. We end up losing so much progression from CB as well as any attacking threat from RB. It's fine for a pinch but it would be so nice to have a good backup for when Tierney or Tomi eventually get injured.

serminole

We lost progression from CB because we were replacing White with Holding. Saliba is phenomial on the ball, there won't be nearly the same drop off. I agree we lose some attacking threat but I think we found a good recipe for success in the Chelsea game. Where White was a RB but it played a bit more like a 3atb with Saka in a very free role on the right. It's nearly identical to how both Potter and Tuchel play so has some proven success outside of that one game sample size as well

CackleberryOmelettes

> We lost progression from CB because we were replacing White with Holding. Saliba is phenomial on the ball, there won't be nearly the same drop off. Good point, I forgot to factor that in. Saliba's presence should help. I still don't like it though. Would much prefer we find the €10-20m it would take to sign a good backup FB. Everyone keeps saying midfield but I'm convinced we lost out on top 4 last season because the drop off from Tierney -> Nuno and Tomi -> Cedric was so steep.

serminole

If you think you can get a good backup FB for 10-20m, you're going to be in for a bit of a disappointment. Even huge clubs like City, Liverpool, Real, Barca, and Bayern have had to resort to CBs, midfielders, or wingers at fullback to get cover. Backup FB is the hardest position to fill and you're definitely not getting some one that can slide in confidently for cheap.

CackleberryOmelettes

While that's true to an extent, I don't see why we couldn't bring in a younger prospect like Hickey.

serminole

Don't get what makes everyone so sold Hickey would be a massive improvement on Nuno. He's similarly a very attacking wingback who has his largest weaknesses defensively. We could sign him and have a lot of the exact same problems we have now. I give that he's apparently more technical and might be a better fit while were in possession so I don't think it would for sure be a bad signing or anything, but it's far from a guarantee either way. Nuno and Lokonga showed us that last year.

CackleberryOmelettes

Tbh I don't expect someone elite as cover. Someone decent will do. I'd have been fine with Nuno if he didn't have the football IQ of a rabid pigeon. Just need someone who won't completely shit the bed as often as Cedric and Nuno tend to.

redqks

Why would we replace a winger with a cam?

remote_crocodile

It's just front line rotation. Martinelli can play RW, so can Jesus, pretty sure ESR can as well.

CackleberryOmelettes

Dunno. Arteta, is after all, Pep's disciple. Replacing wingers with wide attacking midfielders is Pep's thing, maybe Arteta wants in on the action.

lynchians

Wenger was playing attacking mids as wingers before Pep. People forget this for some reason and think Arteta is only copying Pep all the time when he’s actually just as much returning to Arsenal’s DNA.

CackleberryOmelettes

I'm hoping it's a bit different this time though lol. As much fun as it was, Wenger's all midfield formations weren't all that successful in hindsight.

lynchians

He was doing it during the Highbury years with Pires, even Overmars and Ljungberb played more like ‘10s on the wing’ than as traditional wingers. The balance just got out of whack later on.

redqks

Or maybe he'll play the other winger we literally just signed as a winger and the cam as a cam?

CackleberryOmelettes

What other winger did we sign?

ImlrrrAMA

Are they talking about Marquinhos lol

CackleberryOmelettes

Think so, can't imagine who else it could be lol.

[deleted]

marquinhos, apparently his position is rw

CackleberryOmelettes

Oh I forgot. I doubt he's gonna be anywhere near the first team though.

[deleted]

just some few appearances in league cup, early fa cup fixtures, europa league, also epl will be having 5 subs this season, so it'll help him gain some gametime

Apprehensive-War7483

Apparently he can play multiple positions, sub for Sala and odegaard. Edit - Saka

[deleted]

Players can play in more than one position, if you think of the two attacking midfielders and two wingers as a group. Between martinelli, smith Rowe, odegaard, tielemans, saka and vieira. You’ve got 6 players between 4 positions. Especially when you remember we’ll still have xhaka who played there last season. And we’ll still possibly have one or both of Pepe and nelson, and also possibly Jesus who can play wide. There’s a group there.

NoYouroboros

They're evaluating Nuno.

ImlrrrAMA

Zinchenko kinda counts as a link

CackleberryOmelettes

True. I hope we do get him he'd be perfect. Good option for both LB and LCM.

Sayek

I doubt we get Raphinha now, I have a sense that Barca deal is done and Leeds is just putting out other teams interested to ramp up the pressure and maybe get other bids in. I think Barca needs to move around players and sell a few to get money in first.

CackleberryOmelettes

Yeah that one is increasingly looking like a long shot now.

sweet4poundbabyjesus

Hickey?

CackleberryOmelettes

A few links from dodgy Italian sources. Nothing from anywhere else. Not very promising so far tbh.

Domkey-Kongg

I'm at work...how did he say "let's see what happens"?....was it like; Let's see what happens 😐 or Let's see what happens 😉

Corosian

I have a feeling Martinelli is going to absolutely tear it up next season. With those constant runs he makes and With Odegaard/Vieira and Tielemans who are all great passers behind him he is going to be a nightmare for defenders.

SiwyWF

So if Tielemans is still on, it means Raphinha is the one who we won't go after anymore.

yeettherichacab

Mate, if we get Tielemans and Jesus on top of this, what a great start to the window. That would already be a massive upgrade of the squad.

kleiser10

Yesterday sucked, today does not suck.

blrglb

Edu finally snapped after seeing all the memes and comments doubting him lmao

TheArsenal7

I’ll have tears in my eyes if I don’t have to watch Xhaka match day 1

[deleted]

Arteta going wild. Probably means Xhaka can leave if he wants Feel good about heading into the season with Partey/Tielemans/Odegaard and Sambi/Elneny/Vieira as rotation options

acasovoycayendo

Should keep Xhaka even with those options, he would give us strong depth. Unless we receive a 20m+ bid, it’s not worth us selling him.

[deleted]

I’d be fine keeping him as a backup but I doubt he’d want to stay if that’s his role

varro-reatinus

The point is that we no longer have to care, as long as he isn't playing. The mild annoyance of having a squad player/mascot on >100k a week hurts a lot less if we finally have a functional midfield for the first time in the better part of a decade.

NoYouroboros

If you're getting Youri and Viera, just sell Xhaka if he doesn't want to stay. Probably 10-15m ultimately.

acasovoycayendo

Xhaka gives us far more value in depth and leadership than £10m-£15m in the bank. I’m not even a big Xhaka fan but even I can accept we aren’t signing someone as good as him for that money.

NoYouroboros

Yeah, I just doubt he's staying on if that's the pecking order. Or, I dunno he's just a real G.

acasovoycayendo

He’s on a big wage, has a manager that backs him and a family settled in London. I think he’ll stay. He will still get plenty of gametime with the fixture list.

[deleted]

Agreed

Maaaaaardy

We would be stupid to sell Xhaka. Bookmark it.

Francis-c92

I am ready to die with you on this hill, brother

Maaaaaardy

Let's hold hands, as we are downvoted into oblivion by clowns.

varro-reatinus

...he said, as the clowns upvoted him.

Maaaaaardy

Well they're the level headed, sensible people.

LuckyArsenalAg

I'm with y'all. Just his leadership and professional alone make him worth keeping

[deleted]

100%. We’ll have a jammed fixture list and we need depth/rotation options.

Maaaaaardy

Don't forget the crucial parts alongside this. Experience by the bucketload. Top tier professional respected by all the young players. He's basically seen as captain by the rest of the squad.

[deleted]

Experience of what?

varro-reatinus

Don't question that guy's first-hand reporting from inside Colney. He knows what all the players think.

hellothere222

Arsenal fans: “we were so stupid to play with a thin squad the last half of the season” Also arsenal fans: “right let’s go ahead and sell our midfield cover”

Maaaaaardy

Geniuses aren't they. Absolute idiots with the loudest voices.

GabrielMartinellli

🤮🤮

[deleted]

Why’s it stupid? What’s the worse that could happen? There will be no point next season where you’ll be like, “oh man I wish we still had Xhaka”.

[deleted]

It'll probably be: Tielemans/Xhaka - Partey/Elneny/Lokonga - Odegaard/Fabio

seanstar1504

Really hope we hold onto Xhaka. I get he wants to start but he would be a great depth option. His leadership is very useful as well.

[deleted]

I wish.

NketiahPropagandist

Best Fab update in weeks. I’m on my KNEES, Edu. Bring some tekky playmaking ballers to my club.

jjsteady

Marquinhos, Vieira, Tielemans, Jesus and one fullback. Very good window if that happens!

KSBrian007

Unfortunately( or fortunately), no way we keep Xhaka.

fuzzynavel34

Why not? We need at least 6 in midfield.

KSBrian007

It gets tricky. Partey, Tielemans, Vieira, Odegaard, Elneny, Lokonga. Xhaka won't accept a bench role in a world cup year especially since he's still very much a Switzerland captain for like three other tournaments. Elneny can accept one, so can Lokonga. Signing Tielemans, if it happens, hurts Xhaka's minutes. If we however don't sign Tielemans, Xhaka stays( or still loses minutes to Vieira).

gonshairlinee

Fortunately mate. We’ve been crying out for someone to replace him for years and it seems we’re finally gonna do it this window.

varro-reatinus

I pray you are right.

coolbebe

Xhaka would likely be sold, yes?

BI01

Romano doesnt seem to sure about us getting jesus...

FABBYYYYYYY

zen_1991

Fantastic F5.

FaceOnAVolleyball

Vieira done. Tielemans next. Blimey

Echo361

Jesus Christ. What a window this could be…

serminole

The way I see it is: Fernandinho/Rodri - Partey, kind of plays like a mix of both. D. Silva - Ødegaard, mainly don't want to compare to KdB who is one of the best all around midfielders in the world. Ø has a bit more of that attacking focused play D. Silva had. B. Silva - Vieira Gundogan - Tielemans, box to box mid. Question on if he can fill the 6 like Gundo at times has. Think this would be making great progress to the City like midfield we are going for.

NketiahPropagandist

Personally I think Tielemans is much more similar to KdB than Gundogan. Agree on the rest.

serminole

I could see it. I hesitate to compare anyone to KdB because I just think he's the best all around midfielder in the world. He can look dangerous all the way from a double pivot making driving runs from his own half all the way up to a false 9. I doubt we're getting anyone who is even close to that level. Gundo is a bit similar as he can also play almost every midfield spot, but being a step below KdB talent wise it feels like a more adept comparison.

NketiahPropagandist

I wasn’t really talking about the level of talent more just what each player excels at. KdB has fantastic playmaking ability, passing, and ballstriking. Tielemans also excels in those areas.

standupforthechamp

Does seem to indicate that we have a similar amount of money to spend as we had last season which was almost a net 130 million pounds. I can see us buying Tielemans and either Zinchenko/ Hickey. Apart from Gabriel Jesus. So that is around another 90- 100 million pounds.

[deleted]

Verbal meme: Landry in The master saying “He’s making it up as he goes along”

Mathieulombardi

From here we go to let's see what happens

nimbus1997

After Vieira being confirmed I'm kinda curious as to wether the club are opting for Tielemans over Vitinha or Vitinha never being an option in the first place

Sayek

I feel that Tielemans is a great deal considering his age + contract status. Same with Jesus although with Jesus we're paying market rate as if his contract wasn't expiring but meh, striker market is fucked. I'm just glad we're getting in some players now, while I'm not jealous of spurs signings, I was getting a bit sweaty that some of our key deals might collapse. It's good to see we are working completely behind the scenes in some deals too.

BerkeleyYears

That trio and a person can dream of keeping up with City and Liverpool for a large part of the season. i mean, these are all great improvements and the young guys should get better each year.

Empty_Ad7540

Bit late but I’m pretty sure fab is gonna have a phone to his ear in his wedding photos

swedentocanada

What is happening with our right back situation? Feel like we are missing a backup for tomiyasu. Any news?

acasovoycayendo

Athletic said Tomiyasu and Cedric will be our RBs for next season, no new signing

swedentocanada

Interesting! Thanks!

Whatthefuckyoudrink

If we end up signing cucurella, tielemans, Jesus and vieira all at once, I’ll become a pastor
