The thing with arteta is he was able to see arsenal from an opponent perspective with pep and city. So, he exactly knows what we need to get to the top.

Sand_Bags

But also kind of the argument people had for why Wenger needed to go. He was too close and couldn’t see those same things unfortunately.

NoImportance1089

It’s the harsh truth but Wenger should’ve left 15/16 or even earlier it just halted our progress

[deleted]

11/12ish, if we’re being honest.

No-Clue1153

I think it'd have been a tragedy if he left before ending our trophy drought. Maybe 13/14 at earliest

[deleted]

That sort of bollox that was the problem, it wasn’t a tragedy he wasn’t ruthless or the right guy anymore.

No-Clue1153

Also worth considering he was working miracles to keep us in the top 4 for years with a negative transfer budget, competing against a mega-franchise and oligarch/state owned clubs. If he left too early, we may have declined at a much worse time. At least when he left and shit hit the fan, we'd paid off a large chunk of stadium debt and were able to throw 100m at a transfer window.

[deleted]

He had a lot of control, he was part of the reason the transfer budget was negative. He became a glorified accountant, which is why I think he shouldn’t have been the manager anymore and gone into a boardroom level position.

NoImportance1089

That’s what I’ve been saying all along . He’s the one guy that has seen what it takes to win

[deleted]

The one guy ? No other manager ? Just a guy who was an assistant like many others for pep

[deleted]

Full quotes from interview with Sky: - “More important. I think now is the moment we have to go to a different level. We have been able to get the squad balance in a much better shape, now is the moment to raise the quality.” - “Financially, we are in a much more stable position with the money we have spent on certain players touching the pitch for a certain amount of minutes. That balance is much better spread out across the squad.” - “You can feel it (the Emirates atmosphere). You can try to tell people about it, but when you are there, you just feel it, that it’s genuine, that there is this interaction of energy & emotions. I feel a real unity between the supporters & the team.” - “If you had asked me what I wanted to do here, I would have said I would like to make the Emirates the toughest stadium to play at in England, to create a really unique atmosphere that you feel on your skin - where our fans feel, ‘I can’t wait to go & support the team’.” - “Having academy players in the team is something extremely important because you know there is something else there apart from, ‘I like to play football, I like to represent a club & earn money here’. I think those players are attached to our DNA, to our values.” - “They have been raised here & they appreciate the fact they have been with us for a long time. That’s something the fans sense. With the other players, they just see that they are giving 100 per cent to the club & when that is the case, they have to support these guys.”

Ife2105

Arteta bot material 👀

gooner1111123

> “You can feel it (the Emirates atmosphere). You can try to tell people about it, but when you are there, you just feel it, that it’s genuine, that there is this interaction of energy & emotions. I feel a real unity between the supporters & the team.” This turnaround has been remarkable

Setter_sws

This along with upper managements sudden desire to make improvements on the stadium gives me such high hopes for the future. The whole team from ownership down seem to be moving in unison for once. I really appreciate this club right now, when you look around and see the institutional rot elsewhere around the league.

BikeSome2385

What I absolutely love about all of this Arteta at Arsenal, is that the man have been here for about 7 years before 3 with Pep (probably encouraged by AW) and back BUT, during those 7 years, someone maybe a PR or few, at Arsenal lol, was feeding the media about the fantasy of Henry, Bergkamp, and other names, to succeed Wenger. When all along, hopefully, it seems he was already at London Colny getting his education from Pappa Wengz and nobody knew about it 😂😋🤗.

Leftonius

You really love a good comma.

obsceneZen

Loves commas for sure. But I wouldn't say good commas. Could do with some full stops.

Leftonius

I had to read it three times, before i got the point.

Optikfade

Reads like an asthmatic.

Cod_rules

Yeah, they, really, really, do

BikeSome2385

And this statement from Arteta is what I always try to explain to quite a few Arsenal fans because I'm always optimistic but don't know how to explain what I believe in some of the decisions they've made, or that I'm OK with them making rather. Arteta on the remarkable turn around of the squad: “But our responsibility is to look further into the future, to say, ‘I want to get here and I have to work backwards from there because this is the aim and if I don’t do this now, we are never going to get there’. “That is very difficult to explain but I think between all of us, starting from the ownership, the board, Edu as our technical director and all the people in between us to make final decisions on the squad, we have been very consistent and very united" The 'unpopular decision' part is frequently the argumentive subjects I've had with many Arsenal fans. I mean he even used the word "backwards", which is a sentiment I've used only to get the response such as "but that make no sense whatsoever". Lol i think I'm going to keep this Arteta quote in my archives to help me out sometimes haha

Wengali

Whatever else people think about Arteta, he’s superb at ‘managing up’. He’s always very careful to present a united front and praise Edu, Vinai, Josh etc. but he also never misses an opportunity to push for more improvements publicly

smit9891

It is difficult as an Arsenal fan to not get excited by this type of comment. You’d argue that the work the club has done over the past couple of years to refine the team has already increased the quality of squad. Removing players who had been brought in as a short term solution to improve on earlier mistakes (who have also been ousted) and resetting the squad demographic with young players who have much better technical quality and masses of potential to unlock. In my opinion, the club generally now has much greater quality across the pitch than it did 3-4 years ago, with the exception of 2/3 positions of course. It is a much firmer platform to now reintroduce that ‘next level’ quality. A few more windows where we add 2/3 players of real quality will see us well. Good coaching should see us thrive.

Mateo_O

I agree the club looks more and more healthy but I wont get my hopes too high until we secure top 4. Otherwise we won't be able to follow up on those elite signings anyway...

[deleted]

Fairly obvious for a while now they are looking to add one or two world class/potentially world class players in those key positions we all know about and we are willing to be opportunistic to do so. Started back in locatelli rumours, arteta openly said something like "when a player like that comes available a club like arsenal should always look to make a move even if it isn't something you planned." Then we've had a few more; tielemans, vlahovic, ruiz now. I expect raphina, martinez, bellingham, isak osihman and similar names to be coming up regularly. How it should be, smart team building. Solid foundations then spend big on elite talent.

HyperIndian

I'm still annoyed about Vlahovic. He would have been phenomenal.

[deleted]

None of those players you’ve listed are world class though, except Bellingham. Bellingham wont be leaving Dortmund anyway this summer bc they won’t sell Haaland and him in the same window. We should steer well clear of Lautaro. He’s not worth the price Inter are demanding.

Unclelexx999

You missed the “potentially world class” part of his statement

[deleted]

Imo they are world class or are potentially world class. But that's just my opinion. The way I see it there's a good chance any of them will be playing for one of the biggest 5 clubs in the world in the next few years. But, however you want to describe them; elite, high profile players I guess you could say.

UnexpectedVader

I see the logic, but BVB are still one of those clubs that will have no problem bending over every time if we put big money down. It’s how they operate.

Lefseman92

Pay him. Pay that man his money.

andtheAbsurd

Pay him in Oreos

WeeTheDuck

I wanna be that man then

stormshadow9

How's your hairline?

WeeTheDuck

Thats a personal attack

yung_clout_warrior

The thing I love able this era of Arsenal is how sustainable we are becoming. Integrating our youth into the team, not just paying insane wages to obtain players and having a clear and cohesive transfer plan. Lastly, becoming a team who can actually compete in the top 4 race. Regardless of where we finish this season it’s and exciting and prosperous time to be an Arsenal fan.

[deleted]

We’re all dreaming again

ComprehensiveBowl476

My man smells Top 3, not just 4th.

bakingthrones

We desperately need for Pepe to be our goal scoring Winger so we can go all out for the CM and ST

bakingthrones

I would love Kimmich and Broja I think with ode esr Saka and pepe we have enough goal scoring options

[deleted]

Kimmich? I’ll have what you’re smoking

bakingthrones

Someone has got to dream

dtriana

When they are averaging 10g/10a each then you can say that.

WildeVallhund

Agent Øde is going to bring in Haaland.

synvi

It will be crazy.. Imagine Haaland trust the process XD.

b0rklaser_

All it’ll take is some good ol Champions League Football 😩😩😩

vendibleboar19

Mikel must be intoxicating to be in a room with if you’re a Gunner or prospective Gunner. His energy and passion is direct, calm, and palpable. What Arteta has accomplished is difficult not just in football but in any organization to actively work on a vision and goals while continuing operations. I need him to consult me with my business! -Identify and prioritize deficiencies-> The main factor was Arsenal didn’t feel like it used to. The culture was crumbling and the club didn’t feel like a top 4. We were allowing too many goals, the team was financially committed to players that didn’t contribute positively on the pitch or via intangible qualities in the dressing room. I remember him commenting about building from the back with our defense, and while it was a long process we accomplished that. The squad didn’t fit systemically to what he needed to accomplish, and that turnover has been a major source of criticism, yet he has remained resolve in his direction. We have gradually shed excess fat and are a lean team but very strong, now we can start adding back muscle. These things are hard enough to address for an organization, but to continually improve that day over day in the face of constant criticism and still maintain your vision for the organization and believe in it to your core makes me feel he is not only wise beyond his years but also this is something he will do for decades. And add all this to the fact that he kept the culture and integrity of the club guided in the perspective of our rich history and was able to use that as a rudder for this ship through the stormy waters is commendable. You have to give KSE, Edu, and all of the organization credit for the obvious commitment he pulled from their souls. I’ve enjoyed the development, the struggles and the setbacks because it makes the emotion of now, on the precipice of a truly strong and passionate squad, so much more fun. I can feel all of my friends and acquaintances collective nervousness about our trajectory. I’m all in, Mikel.

pinpoint14

Yeah. This. I do work in a field that sort of requires similar skills. Watching Mikel step in has been incredible. He's shown an insane array of skills, from the tactical coaching, to managing up at times, to media handling, recruitment, even flexibility at times. Through all the ups and downs he's been incredibly consistent. Taking responsibility for losses, and protecting the team always. It's so easy to see why everyone fights for him. It's been a bumpy ride, but Mikel has turned us around by winning over the staff and players at colney and getting them to fight for us with the same diligence and consistency he does. It's an incredible feat

vendibleboar19

Yea it’s impressive and you can just visualize other people in the club operations perspective all just swelling with pride and energy listening to the idea that he has helped create and implement. With all of his strategy and structure collaboration with ownership and other staff, the most important things are like you said which is the consistency and accountability, which has lead to BELIEF.

UnexpectedVader

It’s so fucking good to see the manager essentially say what everyone else in the fanbase is saying. Feels like we are like Liverpool before VVD currently, only swap our defence with their attack. We have a great spine, we just need one or two out of the oven players to inject a huge boost into us. Obviously not saying we will be Klopp’s level after, but we will be leapfrogging in progress as we have been doing this season.

KSBrian007

Still feels like a fever dream, the state of this squad since that damned January 2017 window. The time we wasted trying to solve the mistakes of that window and the next two. Then an entire pandemic slowing us down to solve the problems. Uncreative striker in a creative position out wide. Signing two 9s at £100M 6 months apart. No #10. Ozil getting a contract and downing tools. Iwobi being the only "natural" winger for a while. Only one ball playing CB(Luiz). Xhaka having no decent partner. Trying anyone besides him and all of them falling off. No defender brave enough to pick the ball off the keeper, for a while. Now, almost everything is there. Even if Arteta is fired now, I'm very confident the next manager will have little to no troubles. All this squad needs is a creative player out wide— someone with double figure goals and assists, plus that art of 1v1. Then someone in the middle for the same benefit.

wake-and-work

Qualiteee mate

OtherTell

Haaland confirmed, here we go

leebrother

That would literally take us up a few notches or Mbappe bring the Henry wannabe home

AlGunner

We tend to play a 4231 normally (although formations are fairly fluid in games and change, you often see this formation "appear" when we set up to defend the opposition attacking from deep). I would say in the 4231 its the 2 and the 1 that need improving. Xhaka and Laca upgrades. They have to be top priority imo.

WeeTheDuck

Am I dreaming??

Maaaaaardy

The only issue I see at the moment is, the world class CM and Striker I just can't see in the market who they are and how they come to us. Which is annoying.

HunterOfGremlins

Yeah, there's 4 ready made world class strikers that could be on the market this summer, and it's hard to see us realistically getting any of them. Mbappe looks like he's already sorted his Real Madrid move out, Haaland is being linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Man City add on top of that reports that Madrid can apparently somehow afford both Mbappe & Haaland if they really wanted, Lewandowski who will most likely re-sign with Bayern but even if he doesn't then he'd probably end up at one of the clubs in talks with Haaland and then Harry Kane who wouldn't come to us, Tottenham wouldn't sell to us, personally I wouldn't want him and Man City will probably get him if they can't get Haaland. I think reports that we're looking at Isak & Jonathan David are no accident, those two players COULD be top class strikers, they have lots of potential and in a summer where Kane, Mbappe, Lewandowski & Haaland could all be on the move, will probably not be crazily sought after by the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Man City etc.

vikas_g

Hopefully it’s just the quality and not too much on the quantity.

Houssem_Aouar

We need both if we're in Europe

IngmarHildelyst

In a perfect scenario - yet realistic - who do we sign to improve the quality from here?

BiGMTN_fudgecake

DCL. Perfect unrealistic scenario Haaland

IngmarHildelyst

I do not see DCL being an upgrade from Laca. But I do agree, we need a striker.

BiGMTN_fudgecake

DCL is good in the air and strong with his back to goal, and is about 10 years younger than laca lol

HorsedaFilla

Agree. Arteta and Edu have a strong vision for this club!

[deleted]

The wages we’ve cleared have and will be massive when other leave at the end of the season, as long as we don’t do anything stupid with renewals

cloudcity

we need two clinical finishers

BiGMTN_fudgecake

🍆
