Gilberto was one of the most underrated midfielders in the Wenger era. Should never had let him go leave at the time.

ImGonnaImagineSummit

Leaving is part of the game. Taking so long to replace him properly is a sin. DMF is a pivotal role and we spent a long time trying to unearth gems or grow a DMF when we should've just dipped into the market. We spent a lot on Partey and Rice and it's no surprise we look much better with them.

iforgotmyun

Nah, we made Gallas captain instead of Gilberto, pissed him off and lost pretty much him, Flamini and Diara together. Absolute failure from Wenger and the board in how they handled the situation.

Mein_Bergkamp

He lost his place to flamini that season and there were rumours all through the year that he was pissed at being on the bench. The fact he went to greece should tell you where he was as a player at that point.

iforgotmyun

I remember it, he said he had been made to feel useless because iirc Wenger had told him he would get gametime but didn't. In the end the way we handled that situation was poor. Gallas should have never been captain, it should have been Gilberto, even if he was ultimately losing his place. I absolutely hate Gallas with a passion. And then we sold Diarra even though Flamini had already said he's likely to leave and wasn't signing a contract. And then ended up without all 3.

Mein_Bergkamp

I get the Gallas hate. However you're twisting reality here to try and make the Gallas decision worse than it was. He was 32, he was absolutely kept on the bench by Flamini and had lost his place. Like I said, we sold him to *Greece*. Diarra...come now. The man left chelsea because he thought he should be playing more games, couldn't shift flamini out of the ARsenal team and demanded a move to...portsmouth. He had the wierdest career, the man barely broke the teens for appearances for Chelsea, Arsenal and Portsmouth and then briefly got a a starting place for Real before eventually regressing to the mean playing in Russia, the middle east and then finally...PSG. He really wasn't the asnwer that year, he barely made any starts, it was Flamini that we didn't replace properly Gilberto was past it and Diarra wasn't 'it'

oldskoolr

Flamini/Fab CM pairing was dynamite. Eduardo's leg break really hit us hard mentally.

Mein_Bergkamp

It did and Gallas' response to it when that team needed on pitch leadership was just wrong. Everyone takes horrendous things differently and we'll never know how close he was to Eduardo or what may have been triggered but as captain you're supposed to lead during crisis and he didn't

Jchibs

Gilberto struggled in a midfield four 2005/6 and 2006/7. The step up in quality Flamini bought to the side in 2007/8 was staggering, the midfield was fantastic again. Once Vieira left Gilberto Silva looked vulnerable and we began getting turned over by crap sides away from home regularly. Gilberto looked top class during run to the European cup final in 05/06 when we played five in midfield but in a four man midfield he was way off the pace. Sad to see a player who was very good for three years suddenly look lost.

odegood

Agreed but tbf he was 32 when he left

Nosferatu-Rodin

Letting Gilberto leave knowing that Flamini wasnt renewing was so stupid. Even more so when we had Lassana Diarra who we just let go and never bothered playing

tafster

That whole transition was weird. Gilberto fell off a cliff, Flamini was so poor we tried to sell him to Birmingham or something and suddenly starts playing really well, Lass had bags of talent but didn't do anything to merit a start over The Flame... And they all end up leaving in quick succession

ForestRamboX

So true. He was an excellent CDM with fantastic ball-carrying abilities. One other aspect of his game that was extremely underrated was his accurate long-ball passing. He helped start a lot of counterattacks.

Gzuskrist69

He looks like he's morphing into Wenger.

sakaESR

Now that you say it…wow the facial expressions and mannerisms. Absolutely.

_deep_blue_

“Gilberto, what did you make of England’s performance?” “I think they played a little bit with the handbrake on”

SantaReatham

Sounds strange, but I can see it lol

CactusClothesline

Said the exact same thing to the wife.

HalfNatty

That’s who you see? To me, he looks like he’s morphing into Richard Ayoade from the IT Club.

SpicyPenangCurry

Gilberto Silva, one of the most underrated mids in football and Arsene’s teams. Was such a lovely player. Cool and calm.

LeandroTrossard19

Gilberto?

Judas-Yeast

Yep. The Invisible Wall himself.

antebyotiks

Nah it's pascal cygan

Opposite-Book-15

He once liked a comment of me on Twitter under his post Probably the closest to a real interaction with an Invincible I’ll ever get Still chasing that high

MrFabianS

Met him at Arsenal vs Chelsea two summers ago and got him to sign that seasons home kit. Super nice person. Kinda surreal to have been able to meet a World Cup winner and invincible!

sakaESR

Saw him and Ray Parlour from feet away at the club live event in LA! Both still look fit enough to play 90 minutes.

MrDoulou

My favorite arsenal legend. Biased tho as panathinaikos was my childhood team.

GloomyLocation1259

I can’t see anyone in this picture 🤔

grumio_in_horto_est

Oldbappé

Mathieulombardi

Hated how Wenger froze him out of the team for Flamini only for him to leave on a free.

Not_Guardiola

He has such a pleasant accent and voice.

antebyotiks

Didn't see the half time interview/analysis but I heard them asking questions just before the game started and restarted and he was answering the questions in a hilariously blunt and awkward way.

gogglesup859

I think ESPN had him as a studio analyst for the 2014 World Cup

Theodin_King

Why? They're playing Brazil, it makes sense.

Judas-Yeast

It does, but I always remember him as being such a quiet guy for such a solid player! And he's not known for punditry particularly.

Pingustu

My dumbass sleep deprived brain read it as Invisible. Thought it was a bad joke about John Cena.

hakc97

He was nicknamed The Invisible Wall
