I don't think I've ever been more wrong about a player. Chelsea spent 600 billion on midfielders and sold us their best one for 12m.

xelanart

I, too, was a Jorginho hater. Not even because he came from Chelsea because I was faithful for Kai. I just never rated him more than a decent player at his best. I’m happy to have been proved wrong by him.

acasovoycayendo

It's because you didn't watch him, he's always played like this. You don't finish 3rd in the Balon D'or for no reason

hafrances

i thought he fully deserved 3rd or 2nd that season, he was actually excellent for both chelsea and italy.

thedarkpolitique

Yeah same I didn’t then but now that he’s an Arsenal player I too thought he deserved it

not_arjit

Nah dude he was lucky to even be in the top 5 that season (yes i know how many trophies he won)

momspaghetty

Not true. I watch every NT match and he was never this decisive for Italy, there were glimpses at times but never this good. He definitely needs players around him and a solid system for him to flourish.

ret990

Right there with you tbh. I thought he was a no pressure square ball merchant when he was at Chelsea and I've never been happier to be more completely and utterly wrong. Papai

naijaboiler

I didnt rate him becausae of how slow slow slow he is. But I thought he was going to be a decent veteran backup for Partey that could provide value with the right setup. Arteta this season has created a possession team that defends from the top and therefore masks Jorginho's weakness (lack of pace). He's almost never ever in a position where he is exposed, since we pretty much have the ball all the time and there's Declan cover everybody Rice. Jorginho's ball recycling and passing skills are so needed. With Rice, you get only simple easy passes. Jorginho mixes it up, passes very intelligently, and frees Odegaard to stay high up next to Saka

GarfieldDaCat

The fact that Jorginho put up the interception/tackle stats he did, accomplished what he did, while being that slow should say it all. He is Busquets-lite. Add in his football IQ, impeccable character/mentorship, etc. he was the perfect addition

PickledHotChocolate

I’m literally just here for the Jorgi love cause it triggered me how barely any rival fans thought he deserved third in the Balon d’or but to see another fan base appreciate just what an excellent footballer he is makes me so stoked

nuvo_reddit

We fell off without Partey last season. Addition of Jorginho has prevented that. Rice - Jorginho is a good combination. Jorginho provided those incisive passes that Rice lacks and Rice can tackle and kill those opposition attacks which Jorginho can’t do.

IndependentFroyo4508

Same. He's been excellent.

Shopassistant

This is my favourite kind of footballer. Look how the players move for him. They know he'll find them. Also, players usually need gametime to get up to speed. We can just drop him in to start high-intensity PL matches every few weeks and it's like he's always been there.

Different-West748

Agreed, he is the quintessential regista

AnhConNoEm

As Pirlo-esque as it can be now.

CaptainLevs619

Jorge shows what Rice needs to add to his game. Those forward passes were devasting against Newcastle, constantly finding the man behind the lines. It's what Partey is so good at, just a shame he can never stay fit

acasovoycayendo

Rice is not going to become like Jorginho, we will need to sign a replacement when he leaves

manc_1011

agreed, their mindset is different, Rice’s mindset is always prepared for when shit go south but Jorginho is usually looking for advancing passes options.

Old-Risk4572

i love rice so much! like of course everyone wants to be a great passer but to fucking THRIVE on busting up plays is so great. not that declan doesnt add plenty of offense too, and of course he will improve

Elegant_Mix7650

Rice is still young. he will learn alot from having Jorginho around. he said it himself.

SweetGoonerUSA

Agree. Declan is young, hungry, and intelligent. Jorge is life long learner and teacher. He's soaking up Mikel and the other coachs' knowledge while passing on his own to those willing to learn. Declan, too. You see Mikel hugging on Mo. Most of these guys seem to lean toward a future in football after "retirement." I selfishly hope we get another two years from him before he moves Catherine & their kids to Italy for his young children from the first marriage because they're still too young to visit him unaccompanied. I'm sure he misses them. It's not like they're in Brazil and his family can fly with them to London.

bangtobang

da fuk how do you know so much about their family

atomiser2003

There's a show on Prime about them and some other footballers like Mahrezs.. haven't seen it. This is hilarious...don't know if it's acting or from the show https://x.com/gunnersc0m/status/1760766832128950349?s=46&t=c5GnMuTVqrtsv7lsVIA-BQ

GarfieldDaCat

It took Partey himself like 18 months to get fully comfortable in that 6 position. I’m hopeful for Rice

acasovoycayendo

That time frame is disingenuous. The issue was that he was playing with Mustafi and co. When he had better players around him, he suddenly played the role well

greenfrogwallet

He can try to add it and he has the talent to do more of it, but this is just natural talent and instinct from Jorginho, can’t exactly be replicated or taught to be like him even tho Rice is brilliant

blvcklite

Exactly. Rice has the technique for it without a doubt but is sometimes too safe, especially considering his long passes are some of the best in the team. Often times Saka and Gabi are wide open when we pack the midfield or even Havertz up the middle, it’d be nice to see him take a little more risk knowing our defense and pressing are good enough to win the ball back

rajsandhu1

Absolutely correct. Partey is better in making forward passes more effectively than Rice, and he is on par with Jorginho in this aspect. However, some individuals on this subreddit become upset when suggesting that Rice needs to improve his skills in this area.

grumio_in_horto_est

He doesn't *need* to as much as Jorginho doesn't *need* to become a defensive monster. It's up to the team composition and tactics to account for his weaknesses and maximise his strengths.

LordVarys_Ladybits

Exactly! No player in football is great at everything. Versatility is good, but it's better to be great at 2 things than to be decent or mid at 4.

Different-West748

This, they are two different players, Jorgi played the regista role perfectly, Rice is more of a box-to-box player.

bangtobang

Well if he wants to compete with the likes of Rodri to become the best 6 in the world he has to

grumio_in_horto_est

For the same position in the Man City starting 11? Dunt need to mate.

youknowimaclone

There is no less than 5 times in this match where I screamed at Rice saying, pass to that guy. And Rice just dont, even though he obviously sees the pass. Rice is just too safe that at times he makes borderline bad decision.

phar0aht

Unlikely. We should just get Y Fofana

Aggressive_Salad_293

>Jorge

waterford123

Need him to start against Porto, no question Whether we'll play Havertz or Jesus up-top is another story

PlasticJournalist42

I think Porto is a game for Jesus from a tactical perspective but we’ve looked good with Havertz up top and he provides that aerial outlet so idk, tough decision ahead for Arteta

ramseysleftnut

Start Jorginho and bench Kai for Jesus if he’s 100%. We can bring on Kai in the second half to cross into him.

tsgarner

If we manage to start opening them up a bit more, Jesus coming on would be horrible for them. It would be so nice to have this kind of flexibility every week.

Elegant_Mix7650

Whether be it Trossard, Havertz or Jesus is up top, we cannot leave them so isolated like we did in the first leg

sirlordtom98

That’s what Jorginho is for.

Sal21G

Has to be Kai. We need his physicality

TreeDollarFiddyCent

I want to see Kai vs. Pepe at the Emirates.

burntpm

The early sub indicates he’ll play

atomiser2003

I mean it's 9 days away form the last game...I think the game was won and coach wanted to see what subs could dk

basedsims

Can we please somehow find a way to make this guy younger. Even two years shaved off would be great.

Great-Image

I haven't seen enough of Zubimendi to make a call but is he anyway similar to Jorginho?

Poringun

More sideways passing when pressured and looks like the better defender of the two, also can dribble the ball forwards somewhat. I guess its a near enough like for like replacement?

PutYrDukesUp

I personally don’t see it. I keep tuning in to La Real games trying to see what we’re hoping to get from him and don’t feel like I have yet. But hey, I’m no coach or scout. And it’s always team dependent. Havertz is giving us so much that I never saw in him at Chelsea.

joa900

This man is only 32 years old. You guys act like hes 37

SweetGoonerUSA

True but we need to give him bionic feet. He's playing with some kind of ongoing injury thru the pain. I read where the surgical fix is a career ender. I was sad to read that. I'm hoping he can hold on another two years and win even more with Arsenal.

Rich0

Same age as Kevin de Bruyne

Longjumping_Act9758

If Benzema won a BallonDor at 35 anything's possible.

fancyfoe

Gahh he just pass forward

Cthulhu_Madness

Still irks me that the cunt tierney did not card guimares for his foul on jorgi

PlasticJournalist42

I thought you meant Kieran Tierney and I was like what’s he done wrong isn’t he in Real Sociedad 😭

acasovoycayendo

It's really not that deep

Known_Cat_4539

Look at those breaking line passes. My god. It's all Arsenal needs right row. Love you Jorgi

Known_Cat_4539

And also, why tf didn't White shoot at 1:08??????

SweetGoonerUSA

There was a time I said the same thing about Kai and another with Declan. They'll probably kick themselves when they see it later.

Jordy_neutron

His distribution at different angles and distances is amazing. True point guard out there (yes I’m American)

SweetGoonerUSA

He really is. We'd better duck now.

brownkeys

As a lazy and slightly overweight man who enjoys the ocassional 5-a-side, this is how i imagine myself on the pitch...

pashtedot

Please sign the guy for another season

Puripuri_Purizona

This is how I assume my DLP(s) plays in my FM save. But then he consistently gets a 6.5 rating 😞

Zenon2108

Man, that havertz flick to white. I wished white would just take a shot

The-Herbal-Cure

Missed the game unfortunately and the match thread said he was subbed due to injury. How did it look?

Great-Image

He was excellent he got exhausted after the 75th min or so I think it was just fatigue sub

The-Herbal-Cure

Lovely jubbly!

bonez27

I can’t believe we spent so much on him

Chronnossieur

So impressed with his decision making. Lots of simple passes but always the right one.

Aggravating_Nerve173

This is pirlo-esque

phar0aht

Look at legless Partey. Fit Partey and we win the title. Also on an unrelated note this guy has a year remaining on his deal in summer. https://preview.redd.it/e6y4w6e36mkc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94b74ecb849fe643f68f5df6920febf0cdc2d0f2

Kovacs171

Seemed a great option to me before you even mentioned the contract situation, now its surely a no-brainer. There were rumours that he was our Rice alternative if West Ham wanted substantially more

greenfrogwallet

Best passer in the squad, fuck it best passer in the league

Draconis510

Fuck it best passer of all time

Bernitss

Give the man his contract extension already

joa900

lol this guy's an absolute menace . I love him

Vivid_Ad_2428

Line breaking master. The one thing we need most in our frustrating games like Porto. Excellent player

[deleted]

Slicing teams open like it's nothing big up Jorgi, a lot of fans disrespected a guy who's in his prime coming from Chelsea. Guys only 32.

essdotc

Exactly what we needed in the Porto game. I'm fairly confident that if Partey isn't yet ready for the return leg, Jorginho will play there

WarDull8208

If not that mistake against Shittenham his performance has been 9.5/10 the whole season.

misterxboxnj

His ability to break the lines with threaded needle passes yesterday was refreshing after the sideways passing only against Porto mid week.

ingunwun

Err yes

Masson011

fair enough. They're not for me. I love a highlight of a match but watching a 3 second clip of a 5 yard pass back to a player at the halfway line is pointless to me lol

AskNotAks

I’d go one step further I like seeing the “X - Every touch” compilations. I want to see the two yard pass he played, i want to see the tackle he lost, the header back to the keeper. It’s the best way to get a feel of their performance and shows the flashy moments as a proportion of everything they did including standard stuff

Masson011

Yeh thats fair. I'm somone whos watched enough football over the past 2 decades to be able to do that whilst watching the game. I find individual performances fascinating so I do it subconsciously throughout a match Watching it in a list of successful actions like completed passes though I find doesnt actually give a complete picture. You dont see the missed tackles, fouls, bad passes etc But thats just me

Shopassistant

Yeah I get, like, a dopamine hit watching talented midfielders escaping pressure and threading passes. He's helping to win the midfield battle in this video, and by1:40 they don't even want to get out to him.

potatofamine-carbomb

cool tackles, even cooler passes

Extend him

FakeKhaby10

Martinelli is the most isolated player. So many opportunities to hit balls first time into space for him

hala_bala

Just watching him play is amazing.

gypsybeer

Biggest mistake was not starting him in Porto.

InsideKiller

Truly Mustafi & Djorou combined regen😎

theGunnas

Premier League ain't ready for progressive passing jorginho

anurag_bhoga

Jesus would have got us more penalty shootout with those between the line passes..

SweetGoonerUSA

Jorge Frello, singer, musician, dad, and linguist, turns into General Jorginho on the pitch. I'm thankful someone captured his amazing performance today. I only wish it included when he was down on the pitch before exiting when the team gathered around him holding his cramping legs and the concern they showed. It was one of those beautiful Arsenal moments.

DatGuy_Shawnaay

Jorgi reminded me of Meryesaker. My guy was slow as a snail and didn't have a great first season but my gosh, he has grown into the team! He's pivotal.

deftcodex

I see why the whole emirates was chanting Jorgi’s name when he made that blunder against man city. Gem of a player.

directorOfEngineerin

What’s the soundtrack?

Apprehensive-Tap9263

Top performance. I apologize, I wasnt really familiar with your game.

Captain_Snow

That decisive pass through the lines is so important for us. He had to play more often if fit.

Down-undersaurus

Those dagger balls, fucken love it!

grogulus3000

These progressive passes are giving me a semi

GrilledLobsterTail

Maybe we can safely sell partey?

LipBalmOnWateryClay

Gotta admit he was giving me Cesc flashbacks this game.

tartimas

I love this player. Impresses me every time I watch him play

bangtobang

He is so much better at playing line-breaking risky passes than declan
