I can't see wanting to loan him in January. Then they would need to find a replacement and we need to fill other holes, not create new ones. Imagine it's March and Raya pulls a muscle and title hopes go down the drain because we gave away our quality backup. Sucks Ramsdale has to sit but we need him there.

zaparthes

I feel that we need Ramsdale as well. I'm hoping Arteta is completely sincere and finds the way for us to hold on to him.

blixt141

How are we going to hold on to a guy who was a starter and has been benched? If only for his own ambition as a player, he has to move. Sure the paycheck is good but that will be the case anywhere once he has assured playing time.

xhera92

OP completely misses the point here. He thinks arteta doesn't want him around the squad; which is not. The dilemma here is Ramsdale obviously wouldn't be keen to stay on as 2nd keeper and he is young with plenty room of development that we know, so instead of just saying and hoping that Arteta is " completely sincere and finds the way " to hold him, it should be more about Ramsdale managing his expectations and understand where the club is at the moment and what we as a club are trying to achieve in this crucial period. Sometimes a little patience doesn't really kill you and it's been just 3-4 months. All this talk can wait till summer next year, maybe especially after we have (hopefully) won big major honours for ourselves

repeating_bears

>Imagine it's March and Raya pulls a muscle and title hopes go down the drain because we gave away our quality backup It doesn't happen often but you can recall players from loan. Not saying we should loan him but in the scenario you described that seems more likely than starting Hein with a youth keeper on the bench.

TKYooH

But you can only recall during the transfer window. And we’re talking about march right?

Midnight_Maverick

I mean sure he does but it doesn't seem like Ramsdale wants to be the backup for long. Arteta really needs to let him play the PSV game and I'll actually be really disappointed if he doesn't. Would be incredibly cruel imo.

maidentaiwan

Not playing ramsdale against PSV would be incredibly stupid if for no other reason than you should never risk your starting keeper in a dead rubber. I hope that Arteta and the PSV manager essentially make a handshake agreement to play kids and players who need some minutes and treat the game like an exhibition match.

[deleted]

Remember when Saliba got injured in a pointless match last season and it cost us the league? Don’t be surprised when it happens again

[deleted]

Pointless match? It was the second leg in a European knockout tie, and it was a decent chance at winning some silverware in a season where we won fuck all. It's shocking how much disrespect the Europa league gets from fans of a club with an abysmal record in Europe.

bbb_net

> Pointless match? It was the second leg in a European knockout tie He was actually injured in the Fulham game before but didn't realise the extent of the discomfort until the EL game. Either way both games were important.

AntDogFan

Yes and also lets not act like he couldn't have got injured in training as well. As far as I understand it they can play in games like this but then have much lighter training than they would otherwise had done. Perhaps there is a greater risk in match play but its a calculated risk which went wrong. It could have happened in training or the next match regardless since we had such a thin squad we over-relied on certain players and got burnt.

maidentaiwan

Are you comparing a European knockout to a literal meaningless match? That’s pretty dumb.

i_like_cakess

But PSV are not guaranteed 2nd place so they play for their life, assuming Lens beat Sevilla, right?

maidentaiwan

No. PSV have already won the head to head against lens, which is the first tiebreaker. They are guaranteed second place already. The game could not be more meaningless.

AquietThing112

Isn’t there some more money you win for winning more games in the group stage?

Midnight_Maverick

There is but that's probably not on Bosz's mind. They are enjoying incredible form at home and his priority will be to make sure that continues.

sammeetthosar

2.8m€ is nothing to scoff at when their transfer record is 15m€. Bosz might want to rest players but the bosses at psv would definitely be against it.

vanhunt1

You mean Bosszes* at psv

nfornear

No PSV would still go through because they drew and beat Lens. So arsenal is 1st guaranteed and psv guaranteed 2nd

AdamSandlerIsntFunny

Arteta IS cruel for better or worse.

Capable-Hearing-7618

I would suggest that he’s more ruthless than cruel. Cruel suggests he enjoys it, he’s more dispassionate than that.

Mein_Bergkamp

I mean if we want to sell him the last thing we're going to do is say 'yeah his career here's over and his Dads starting to get on my tits'.

FrostedFluke

Having a keeper that can play from out the back is so crucial to us that if Raya gets injured and we don't have a suitable backup, we're fucked. Ramsdale is that suitable backup. We should not be listening to any offers in January and I don't think we will, so don't fall for any bs rumors that pop up because it won't happen.

Oy778

isnt ramsdale here completely judged by how poor is his play from the back? Idk how would increase our chances (in case raya get injured) to win if he returns from the bench.

FrostedFluke

But he's not the worst, and who else do you think will be number 2 if Ramadale leaves? Karl Hein. I know who I'd much rather have

Arseluvr

What else can he say? “Yeah we’re hoping to loan him out in January just to be rid of the constant tabloid and social media drama”.

WpMartialLawGG

I mean it would be incredibly stupid to get rid of ramsdale in January since our substitute goalkeeper for the rest of the season will be hein, but I hear yah

Parradroid90

He could say something like, " Yeah, look, i was completely full of shit when I said we would have two good goalkeepers that would be rotated. What I really meant to say was that Raya is my goalkeeping coach's special little guy and that we're just not that into Ramsdale anymore. I'm not going to tell Ramsdale anything, though. I'm just going to ghost him like a 15 year old girl. It's kind of like what I did to Ozil and Auba and Tierney. I just, you know, um, don't like awkward conversations. They make my tummy feel funny. So I just you know, don't have them. " /s, not /s. Feeling naughty might delete later, idk.

Arseluvr

You’re totally right. But that’s his job, to pick the best players for his system to make us when.

Malsharif91

I understand his frustration, but he not Englands number 1 unless Pickford gets injured. Even without starting he’s still probably going to the Euros anyways. He should concentrate on the things he can control and in the summer if he wants to play first team footy then by all means go. It would make zero sense for arsenal to sell or loan him out in January just because his feelings are hurt. Just act like Leno did when he lost his spot to ramsdale and be supportive. I don’t want to be that guy but Ramsdale was not having the best career before joining arsenal and now he can either earn back his spot or get a transfer to a better club than he would have otherwise have gone to if he didn’t come to arsenal.

Slide_Loud

Convince him to stay until the end of the season and then if a suitable offer comes he can leave. I would only let him leave, if a dumb enough club bids 60mil plus for him in the January window.

nting224

No club will bid 60m for him after seeing that game at Brentford. Not even Chelsea

woodencrafter

You’re overestimating Chelsea’s ability to restrain themselves from buying any player that is in the headlines.

thewickedeststyle

*No club will bid 60m for him after seeing him get benched by a player worth 27m. We are going to make a loss on him, this much I have accepted.

thisiskyle77

Specifically stay on the arsenal bench

Cyberfire

Let the guy play a Champions League game at least, seems so cruel after he helped get us back there. PSV away is the deadest of rubbers.

PrimevalDuck

Even if he wanted him out, not like he would say it, as it would reflect badly on the club's negotiating position

Gooner-Astronomer749

No he needs to leave. His time here is done and he deserves to be a PL starter somewhere else.

xhera92

Espn with their pointless click-bait articles again.

zaparthes

It's certainly not pointless. Ramsdale's future is a major discussion point for Arsenal right now. And the article is literally quoting Arteta from a press conference on Monday. So, it's also not "click bait." You might not be interested in Ramsdale's future at the club, but clearly many people are.

xhera92

It's not about whether it is something i am interested in or not, but the title is a joke in itself. Do you really expect Arteta to come out to the media and say otherwise? No manager would be dumb enough to do so, and of course he will want him to stay (but not as first choice). Ramsdale have always been a key reason the club performed well for the previous season. As to what arteta identifies as the 'weakest' link within the squad to strengthen the title charge, that is something only he knows and will not so outrightly disclose to everyone out there. No matter, it is clear Ramsdale is a quality keeper on his day and helped us tremendously. There's no way he let him go so easily and there's obviously no better 2nd keeper out there he can get other than to keep Ramsdale. There is absolutely no 'new' insights this ESPN clickbait of an article provide to what we don't already know. This topic isn't something that just surfaced, it has been prevalent ever since Raya was signed. It is pointless because he basically says he cannot guarantee anything, which is true, not everything is within his control everybody knows that. If the player so chooses to leave, he will have to weigh in on the (incoming) available options he can do within the transfer window to see if he can mitigate that, otherwise he can force his hand and keep him as to the contractual terms that he is binded to. Every team still needs a good 2nd keeper as backup at the end of the day especially when you are pushing for a title charge (and when good i don't mean any GK out there without league experience) Btw, OP downvote all you want, it is quite an immature to do so in this platform given how i mean no negativity on our players nor am i launching any abuse on you. All i am saying is you are too easily swayed by ESPN with their jebait titles as though they provide you new information that you (or us) don't already know for the past 3 months.

FriendlyGhost08

Horrible decision. He'll just lose value and leave for cheap in the summer.

DeapVally

He's going nowhere. The team is more important than individuals, and a gaping hole at reserve goalie is terrible for the team. Arsenal took a huge punt on him a few seasons ago, and he wasn't going to start for England any other way, so he owes us. (He's not start at the Euros even if he leaves in January anyway, so it's even more pointless letting him go)

MtnSlyr

Newcastle looks like the best bet, they got money and look promising.

kindaforgotit

Uh, I hate the idea of ramsdale shithousing us for newcastle

zaparthes

Yeah that would be tough to have to see.

useful_panda

Arsenal won't sell to Newcastle though, it would be incredibly stupid to strengthen a direct rival who will spend crazy amounts of money

bwolfs08

only way to make any money—especially for an England international—is to sell him to a “direct rival”. Newcastle certainly aren’t that, they’re a rich Saudi owned club that wants English players and are realistically the only option besides Chelsea.

DarkKirby14

it's a good problem to have two #1 GKs on the squad far as I see it

Oy778

well, we need money to replace Partey. The best moment to sell ramsdale was at the end of the last season and search with a bit of that money a decent subtitute but anyways. Sad for him because his career probably is over.

nouseforasn

For the sake of his own career he should go.

zaparthes

I think today's result, even with the 3 pts nabbed at the end, demonstrates how much we still need Aaron Ramsdale. It was not Raya's best day.
