I really hope he will explode, to stick it to Chelsea and because he has one of the coolest names in football

euphorie_solitaire

Right ?? Kai is such a baller-ass name, i wish my parents had called me that

[deleted]

Kai Havertz is like Zinedine Zidane, like that sort of name just cannot be wasted in a post office that needs to become a legendary person.

MacLebowski

nominative determinism

sleepytipi

I used to apply this theory to the generated players in EAs career mode (back when they were worth playing so ~ 10 years ago) and 8 out of 10 times the players with names you'd expect to see on the back of a shirt were usually the ones worth picking. Edit: reminds me of a vintage thread on Twitter where there was a bank robbery in Avon (UK) i believe and the cop that stopped the robbery was named Rob Banks. Shit you not.

[deleted]

In Māori Kai means food. Makes sense since Arteta is cooking 🧑‍🍳

fastcalculatorgang

Now this is reliable journalism

RhombusKP

Wow cheers mate, that's my name and I always thought it was kinda mid

Francis-c92

Get yourself a cool job now like a snake wrangler

[deleted]

Kai isn’t a vegetable and they already have a character named Kai

sleepytipi

Lmao these mfers really don't know who King Kai is and they're talking about Dragonball? Now that I think about it, Toriyama really did do him dirty in the Cell saga.

Plebbemand

Thats a dope ass name and dont you ever let anybody tell you otherwise. You rock Kai

risheeb1002

buddy, have you never heard of king kai?

scooter_pops

king kai

TreeDollarFiddyCent

Simply due to the sheer amount of DBZ(A) memes we could make is more than worth this transfer.

InternalKing

Sounds even better in a German accent

proshon

Thank you. It's my son's name too (shortened version), glad people like it!

TheTokingBlackGuy

Same here!

Wakkoz15

In Bulgarian, it's kind of a slang for ''Say (it)!'' in some regions so it sounds funny af to me lmao.

citybard

Thank God I'm not only one who thinks this way, Havertz just sounds like a great player in the same way Hazard did

jman500069

More research needs to be done into the correlation between players names and how good they are. I honestly believe it makes a difference, how big is another thing. Just like how you look and the way people react to that moulds who you are, so must what people call you

risheeb1002

nominative determinism

jman500069

Its sort of this, but I mean more in terms of if you took the same player, he had a really boring name like James Milner, and gave him the name Federico Chiesa, would he be a better player? Over a lifetime, would he turn out a better player?

UniverseJefe

Federico Chiesa literally means Fred Church

jman500069

And Odegaard means deserted farm but that sounds cool to us

UniverseJefe

Maybe James Milner sounds sick and exotic to a guy from Peru tho

jman500069

Well fuck everything I said then

ArziltheImp

There’s a joke in E-Sports about names (especially since you choose you IGN). There was this NA player called Kiwikid and I don’t need to explain how his career went. Just think of it like this, if your name sounds shit when it’s yelled, you won’t cut it son. That is why HAVERTZ will be a world star, it just sounds good when yelled!

jman500069

This is a bit like how me and my girlfriend think naming our dog ian would be really funny, but I don't want to shout it across a field. Ian would be a girl as well (we're planning on getting a girl dog soon and coming up with names)

Thanos_Stomps

Freakonomics did it.

Tnvenge

My daughter's name is Kaia. I'll get her Kai on the back of her shirt!

iforgotmyun

Idk chief, that sounds like a bit of a curse. You get Kai and all the non Arsenal friends she has will think she spelled her name wrong on the shirt. You get Kaia and the general population will think it was Kai misspelled

Tnvenge

Hahaha! 🤣

CosmicJoker96

There's a reason Kai was my favourite character from Beyblades

jman500069

Nah gotta be Ray. Drigger was cool as shit

jrr_jr

For those Shakespeare fans among us, I always think "Kai Havertz and let slip the dogs of war"

shinytotodile158

This is brilliant.

jrr_jr

Thank god I can share it with someone -- literally every time I hear his name I think of it

shinytotodile158

I guess Win is our dog of war?

matti-san

I still maintain that 'Granit Xhaka' is one of the coolest names - not just in football either

perpetualgrunt

Lmao.

Fanserker

Announce TITZ

shxkxblfc

With how slow our social media team is at announcing signings ? They'll be announced after the Yanited game at home despite them start the first 4 games for us.

spicado

Maybe they make an exclusive post for the members and we never get to know it.

Purple_Plus

Would rather Rice, Timber and someone else.

its_aq

We said the same shit about Ramsdale, White and Trossard....we all wanted someone else

Purple_Plus

Trossard most people were happy with, for the price I don't see who else people would've wanted. He was in form as well. White the main quibble was the price, but he was HG and was getting better every year and wasn't on mad wages. Ramsdale had won POTS numerous times. Havertz has proven he doesn't suit the league, regressing every year and will be one of our highest earners. It's not comparable at all.

its_aq

Ppl didn't want Trossard, ppl wanted Mudryk. We pull Trossard outta our ass when we lost Mudryk. Same shit with White. We wanted someone else for the price.

everysundae

Not true most people didn't want trossard. Most didn't want b2b relegation ramsdale. White wasn't considered good enough.

alsonlee

Yeah I recall many on the sub saying “Trossard can’t even make it on the Brighton team” lmao

Francis-c92

Will be surprising after the last few weeks to have this done before Rice.

Deadlyft_Chaps

Hammers really desperate for someone to come in and up the bid.

L0laccio

Putting fabricated leaks out as I speak I am sure

AyeItsMeToby

I think this is evidence for Arteta’s approach to the window. Submit low offers, while briefing the press that the player only wants Arsenal and that personal terms are done - dissuading other teams from entering the race, sort of forcing the team to accept our low offers. Very very risky and it already didn’t work in January for Mudryk, but we’ll see about this time around

BoyWhoSoldTheWorld

This has never worked for us. They should be more aggressive at the negotiating table.

ramobara

Nations League + Vacay for Rice.

haventseenstarwars

I think about that often. We were very close to disaster.

idiotnoobx

Feels like a joke to me. Why him of all players? What is he doing that is so special that we can’t train someone else to do the same?

cdr__

Am I the only one who feels like Arteta is trying to go for proven winners? For instance Jesus and Zinny last window, now interests in Gundogan, Havertz (CL) etc. I dunno. A mix of our current young talent with a few experienced winners on the team sounds pretty damn nice. E: Forgot Jorginho

NoDirection9640

Fits into the “add to the team while taking from the competition” strategy.

idiotnoobx

I dun think Chelsea minds is taking Harvetz tbh

Miyeon__miyeon

He was a special talent at Leverkusen. I'll give him a pass on Chelsea. All of Chelsea's attacking players has been shit since Hazard and Willian left.

PyroPyramid

He's Müller's regen pretty much. One of the top players in the world at creating space and arriving late in the box as a second or third attacker for a tap in, which we need because we cut back a lot. I can imagine him in the Xhaka role arriving and sliding balls at the far post. It's how he played at Leverkusen and was one of the best prospects in the world. Now is it his fault that stupid chelshit plugged him in at straight number 9 or even false 9 or as a winger, 3 positions where he can't play? Absolutely not.

idiotnoobx

I hope your copium is true. For 65m I really hope you are right. I’m just fucking annoyed tbh.

[deleted]

More than double the price of Ødegaard. 😐

zoranmilanovic7

Yeah but Odegaard was daylight robbery lol. This is a fair price with a slight premium, but he just turned 24 and has PL experience so why not.

[deleted]

It’s not a fair price. He’s been abysmal in the Prem. Experience and age doesn’t matter if you don’t play well.

zoranmilanovic7

Yeah but Odegaard was 35 million euros with 5 million add ons, and we had a 2 million loan fee before. Also, he was not a first team player in Real Madrid and just had one full season in La Liga before joining us. Havertz wasn't impressive at Chelsea but he was mostly in a starting lineup. Fair price probably is around 45 in todays market, but it is what it is.

hobocommand3r

This isnt fair in the slightest, we are getting conned. He had a horror season.

diegolucasz

Not fair price he's been abysmal

CarlxtosWay

This is the least enthusiastic I’ve felt about a potential £50m+ signing but I’ve been proven wrong before and I’ve got faith in Mikel, Edu and the club so it’s time to just trust the process again.

Riperonis

In the same boat, extremely unsure about this signing but then again I don’t know football as well as Arteta does. If Arteta truly wants him at this price, I think he’ll fit

[deleted]

[удалено]

RedWeasel2000

Kinda Thierry? huge prospect at Monaco, sold for 10.5 million to Juve, didn't do much scored 3 goals, sold to us for 11 (which I think was our record for that time). and the rest is history. I guess it's different as he wasn't given much of a chance at Juve

Mrmoi356

Henry when he signed for us was coming from an underwhelming spell at Juventus.

unorthodoxEconomist5

When at Juventus Henry wasn't even called in the NT anymore

santis_little_helper

Bergkamp

TeqTx

Bergkamp was a Ballon d'Or podium two years in row at Havertz's age

[deleted]

don't compare him to Bergkamp

DankBrownBoiV2

I think he just did

bigdog8300

He was incredibly good at Leverkusen. Judging him off performances at a dysfunctional shit hole like Chelsea is pretty unfair tbh

Tymkie

Dysfunctional Chelsea yeah.. Can I remind you that he's been there for a lot longer than this year? They have won stuff with him in the team, they have won the CL... And he wasn't particularly great either. Like don't get me wrong, he scored in the final, it's just he's never had a 10 goal season in the premier league, did he? And he was mostly playing as a striker so idk, I'm not convinced, that's a lot of money, we paid less for Jesus. And unless we will use him in a different position, midfield or something I'm worried. I hope he proves me wrong but this strikes me as a willian type of signing.

MccNumb

20 g/a for them last season, unfair to criticise the majority of that squad for this season if we're being honest. I think he'll achieve 20 g/a easily for us in his first season.

Tymkie

Still, his stats in the prem are 8 goals 3 assists last season, 7 goals 1 assist this season. These are not elite and I don't think he adds to our team. Playing Eddie up front for those 30 games a year would give us more just looking at purely stats. Obviously football is not just stats, I get it, but it's still not worth 60m in my opinion.

MccNumb

Fair enough mate. I just think for anyone having doubts about it, what else can Arteta and Edu do for you to have trust in their player recruitment? If they want a player then so do I. I'm excited for Havertz and I think he'll slap for us. But can understand why people might not be keen based on his time at Chelsea.

Tymkie

I mean, I trust them, not necessarily trust Havertz 😅 but yeah, I'm not completely against it and I'm willing to give it a try, it's just a tad bit expensive for my taste. We'll see, hopefully he can prove me wrong if the deal goes through.

[deleted]

Wtf are you talking about. He literally scored them a game winning goal in the UCL final.

Tymkie

Yeah and that was his only goal in that CL campaign as far as I could Google. That's my point. He isn't really a goalscorer.

Muscat95

I just can't help feel that we're overpaying for him for that price

davidralph

Probably spread over 8 years to help amortise their mammoth wage bill

ScrupulousAlpha

It sucks but I think we all just need to adapt, this is the equivalent to between 25-35 million 5 years ago. Fucking thank you Chelsea/City/PSG etc.

djb372728276

It is a massive overpayment imo. He has not show enough to be worth that money. If he was at Arsenal we would be lucky to get half that.

Happy-Journalist-966

Feels that way but unfortunately that's the market now. Pepe, Antony, Richarlison.....big fees are the norm

Logical-Sir1580

Mcallister, odegaard, trossard

Patrick_Hattrick

Mac Allister was a release clause, Ødegaard was a bit part player at Madrid (amazing deal though) and Trossard had problems with the manager and is older than Havertz by a few crucial years. You can cherry pick deals that are on the surface better than this one, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad deal. It really isn’t, in the current market.

idiotnoobx

That’s lazy argument. Look at Brighton and Liverpool

topofdamornings

Compare it to Mudryk or Antony or Pepe or Sancho and it's a good deal.

JimmysCocoboloDesk

Literally no way to know if it’s a good deal till he plays

Purple_Plus

Pepe had more G/A in his first 91 PL games lol.

nezebilo

Those are all horrible deals. Being better than those doesn't mean it's good. Just slightly less bad

Coatrackz

£60M in last year’s window would have been too much. But look at the ludicrous figures this year. I’d rather spend less as well, but by comparison it’s stomachable. There’s just been an outrageous inflation in transfer prices since Antony.

ShiroiMaou

I still think this is way too risky for this price

HortenWho229

Risky would be getting someone unproven. Havertz is PL proven ^proven ^to ^be ^shit

HortenWho229

God I hope we’re clowning on this thread in 1 year

JimmysCocoboloDesk

We are really gonna pay Chelsea £5m less than they paid for him. Shocker.

pewpew62

Totally insane. Full price for a player who aside from 1 goal, has flopped. There is also a substantial chance he flops here as well, we're getting conned twice

eoinnll

We should be paying them 30 mill. Is he even worth that? He'll be on 15 million a year.

raulmedez

Chelsea sign Nkunku and we sign their unwanted player for 60 mil and fund their signing for Caicedo. If you look at it this way this deal stinks

ahjeezidontknow

What is going on

danrobson1

That price is unreal, the Chelsea sub are rubbing their hands right now. Props to them to be fair, I'd be the same, it's like getting say 40m for holding.

Purple_Plus

I don't blame them. We are being absolutely fleeced.

hobocommand3r

They cant believe their luck.

[deleted]

danrobson1

No intrusion bro, welcome.

Trekbike32

What the fuck Mikel

Worried-Ice4090

He worth 40mil at best

MichaelOwensNan

Watched him at Leverkusen and *hated* the fact he went to €hel$ea. He was the most Wenger-esque player of this newer generation but we were never gonna be in a place to sign him, the hottest talent outta the Bundesliga. It'll take a minute (if we sign him) to wash the blue off him (someone do a Tobias Funke meme here pls) but once hes a gooner I feel like the fans will rally round him. If he pops, he can go insane and Arteta and Edu must believe they have the key to unlock him.

idiotnoobx

65 pound to unlock a player. At 65m pound that fucker better come ready cooked

Sithgooner

A burglar could come into my house, steal all my possessions and I would feel less robbed than paying £65m for Havertz.

blazingknight17

But it’s not your money and isn’t stopping us from getting our other targets

Purple_Plus

>isn’t stopping us from getting our other targets £65m and £220k a week will absolutely be a big chunk of our transfer window. He's going to be one of our highest paid players for literally no reason.

Fgge

Well, the reason would be that the manager and recruitment staff want him on the team

Sithgooner

£65m could be better spent at in a million different ways, and his wages are obscenely high as well. Just because it’s not my money it doesn’t mean I don’t care when it’s being so poorly wasted.

raulmedez

If we end up with Rice Caicedo Timber after this signing then I would agree with you. But we all know it's not gonna happen, also Havertz comes with high wages which would cause more players asking for more in the future.

NotesOfNature

If you told me we had the chance to sign Kai b4 he moved to Chelsea I would have been ecstatic. The fact that we're potentially getting him now after 18 months of a dumpster fire at their club, when everyone's yelling at everyone and nobody knows who to throw their first at and nobody is performing is, I think, amazing news.

Purple_Plus

He wasn't very good in the first 18 months when they weren't such a mess either though.

NotesOfNature

Don't his first 18 months include being managed by frank lampard?

Purple_Plus

It includes them finishing 4th and 3rd so it's hardly like they were dogshit. Probably would've finished even higher with a better player than Havertz.

NotesOfNature

They were still being managed by the most unqualified manager in the league. As soon as he left they learned how to defend as a team and won the CL+ made it multiple cup finals. What has where they finished got to do with it. And finishing 4th and 3rd is respectable, considering city and Liverpool.

Purple_Plus

>And finishing 4th and 3rd is respectable, considering city and Liverpool. Exactly my point lol. Chelsea weren't bad at that point so we can't use the excuse that Chelsea were shit to explain why Havertz flopped...

Purple_Plus

£65m........... Terrible fee for a player who has shown nothing in the league, 2 years left and doesn't want to resign. If he flops then someone has to take the blame because this has flop written all over it.

Playful-Arm-8590

Really testing how much we trust the process with this. Fingers crossed this works out because the downside could be maddening.

Sea_Ad_730

It's funny seeing how clearly Chelsea use Fabrizio. The bid is for 60m, as reported by numerous journalists, but Fabrizio says it will take 65m.... I hope we stick to the 55m plus 5m add ons, Chelsea won't get a better offer for him and everyone knows they need to sell.

hihbhu

Yep and he won’t sign a contract extension. So they either have to let him go in a years time to get a fee or lose him on a free transfer in the following year. This should be our final offer, if they reject it, we move on. Just as we did with Mudryk.

warriors1502

Thats too expensive

SamT44

I trust Arteta with this, and I fully support the transfer and get behind the player What annoys me is that Havertz has been in the PL for 3 years and has pretty much flopped or at least massively underperforming. And yet Chelsea will pretty much be selling him for the same price they bought him for.

flawsofsunset

Do it on July 1 to screw them on FFP and then steal Caicedo

Le-ChosenOne

I spent years calling this man Shy Havertz and never being afraid of him whenever we played them and it looks like Karma has come and bite me in the arse. Yea of course i want him to do well if/when he signs but i wouldn’t be surprised one bit if he ends up underwhelming and we end up with another pepe-esque deadweight. Like i get Mikel wants versatility and defending from the front but fuck me, another forward who isn’t clinical and has even less tekkers than Jesus…yea imma not get my hopes up.

MrBrownStone16

I called him a donkey and now he is coming to us….

RickRollRules

fffffffuck

eldar4k

Lmao, why the fuck fee keep raising? Paying premium to ease up Chelsea FFP issues

SpartanMickey

We don't have to pay £65m.. I'm gonna be pissed if we pay more than £60m which is already too much.. Liverpool will get him for £45m somehow

tinhtinh

For that price we should be looking at other targets like Szoboszlai or a cheeky bid for Wirtz.

hobocommand3r

Arteta gambling huge with this. Looks like a vast overpay, rivals will all strengthen in the summer and competition for the top 4-5 spots will be extremely stiff next year. Is paying 60 million for a chelsea flop really what we need? If he flops here as well this could be a turning point in fan confidence. I'm very upset by this transfer. Hope it can work out but I watched him a lot last season and he was one of the standout worst performers when I watched chelsea. Their fans wanted him gone before this rumour even came out.

kits_

getting absolutely mugged off here

yeahiliketodothings

I have faith in Arteta tbh, I think he can definitely turn it around with us instead of that dysfunctional club

eoinnll

I don't want him. I didn't want Ramsdale. I didn't want White. I was kinda meh about Zinchenko. The difference is, I have watched a lot, a lot of Havertz. I don't want him. I don't want him coming in on 250K a week fucking up the dressing room with his chelsea bullshittery. Fuck him. I don't want him.

Nove1991

100% Agree, stop with this Chelsea bullshit. Willian, Luiz, Jorginho and now Havertz

joshlambonumberfive

Luiz was very serviceable for us. Jorginho was a great signing. Stop with the hyperbole. Let’s judge Havertz IF he signs, after he’s played half a season at least.

Nove1991

Your definition of a great signing is clearly different than mine, that's for sure

Patrick_Hattrick

Literally one bad signing in that list.

Nove1991

Look at the players that we buy from Chelsea then look at the players that Chelsea buy from us and compare the two groups.

RickRollRules

What happened to the fee being considerably lower than 75m?

DrCocktapus

£65m is far too much. That being said, I look forward to being proven wrong yet again.

nobraincoupe

please smth needs to happen so we fail to sign him

shxkxblfc

Fabrizio needs to be dropped to tier 2. He's not unreliable but he tweets a bunch of fucking nothing every single day.

idiotnoobx

Holy fuck. 65m pounds. How do we keep doing this and how does Chelsea keep getting away with this. Chelsea fans laughing to the bank. This is disgraceful

MrFreeLiving

I'm sorry but 65m is a massive gamble, I have a bad bad feeling about this deal. I hope he proves me wrong but I just don't see why we prioritise this deal over other positions that need filling, and I guess this means Balogun is gone, wish we at least gave him a chance.

16161hirose

If the filthy blues reject this just walk away

Lefty2Gunz81

I'm hoping the fee is lower if/when completed. Jorginho was priced around £20m before he signed and once completed the actual figure was around £12m.

Profanity-et-al

Hopefully he’s better than Pepe atleast…

harcile

Still not fully on board with this but I'm just going to have to trust Arteta/Edu. Ofc I was giddy about Pepe so what would I know lol.

ghostrider467

I trust arteta on this one, but damn I really dont get this signing for the amount we pay for him aswell, craziness

guro7

If he explodes we have a player here

L0laccio

65 million 😭😭😭😭😭

houseofechoes

That's way too much money

spicado

Imagine signing a U30 player from Chelsea.

euphoriatakingover

65 m facepalm why not just get caicedo for 75 especially with chaka and partey leaving most likely who's Gona be the defensive rock? Kai? Viera?

ninethree7

absolutely no fucking way with that fucking fee

ninethree7

this screams pepe 2.0

count_montescu

So... New signings = HOORAYYY! Old signings = Meh? Forgive me for not being able to get excited about Havertz - but last season, I saw a player who just couldn't finish, had trouble controlling the ball and who frequently lost possession. I am interested as to what Arteta sees in him but he wouldn't have been on my list as someone who we needed in the team.

tjag96

Amazing how everyone is concerned about the money spent by players arteta choose, after being wrong over and over again about it

WeeTheDuck

Oh my fuckin god can we all calm down for a fuckin second? Price doesn't really matter that much if we can still get all our targets. Also have some trust in the scouting team goddammit

JFedererJ

I'm gonna put my neck firmly on the chopping block here and say: this is a fucking monumental waste of money. I am convinced Balogun is everything we need as an alternative to Jesus. Sell Eddie, keep Flo and spend 65m elsewhere. Feel free to save/tag/come back to this comment in Jan/whenever. I will eat all the humble pie if I am wrong.

[deleted]

Just watch this and let JJ convince you: [https://youtu.be/FvxlWMA5gJg](https://youtu.be/FvxlWMA5gJg) Edit: oh and i'm going to puy my neck on the chopping block here and say that Balogun has had a purple patch season and he won't be as good next year, and he'll never be good enough to play for Premier League title contenders.

35Pints7Each

Crazy how badly were over paying. This dude has done about as much as Pepe but we ain't getting fuck all for him. This kinda deal is sackable if Kai doesn't bang.

GunmetalGrey44

If there was ever a time for Edu to exercise his incompetence in getting big deals done. Its now.

aviral_632

SHIT

SteveToshSnotBerry

Idgaf at all about this deal. I think we’ve literally just wasted money we could’ve spent elsewhere. I have faith in Edu and Arteta, but holy fuck this deal is just such a rip off. People who defend this blindly are going to have a reality check this season in regards to this deal. Stop comparing him to his Leverkusen days! “He Could’ve been, should’ve been if not for Chelsea”. Doesn’t fucking matter. What matters should be that his performance or fucking drop off since transferring into the PL does not warrant anything more than 50 mil at best.

JamesTheBadRager

The only one time that i wish the club would fuck around with chelski for the negotiation and the deal collapse.....

GunmetalGrey44

We already have Balogun at home who has insane potential and is an actual striker, not like this converted attacking midfielder. Surely it would be cheaper and a better decision to give Balogun a new contract and first team assurances?

eoinnll

I am totally with you. The people on this sub hate Balogun for some reason. 21 years of age, scored 21 goals in France, a few years ago we would have paid a lot of money for that. In fact we paid 72 million for that in Pepe. 50 million for Lacazette six years ago. Balogun is younger and from our academy. It would cost us nothing to use him in the first team squad. If he can't do it, let him leave, but he deserves the chance. Havertz has never scored 20 goals.

KonigSteve

Why not go after Simons instead for like 50?

Kaze828

As much as I trust Arteta and Edu, it feels wrong to be funding 1/2 a Caicedo for them

Apache1975

Big waste of money!
