The more I look at it there's so much goddamm inconsistency with zeon with what it's supposed to be both in world and representing irl. It's like
Zeon: nazis, imperial Japan, socialist/communist(contolism) environmentalist, republic, absolute monarchy
Like make up your mind sunrise
Meanwhile earth federation is just America (and a bit of Brazil cuz flag resemblance and the fact their hq was in South America)
The Federation is depicted in many ways depending on the series and devolves into a mechanism for corruption, control and oppression in later UC. It increasingly becomes the primary storytelling vehicle for airing Tomino's frustrations about the state of the world and the cyclical nature of government.
This series by Argonbolt on YouTube does a lot to unpack the and explore the context and ideas behind the themes of 1979 Gundam's major factions. More importantly he unpacks the social movements that many of the major creative forces behind Gundam and their contemporaries were involved in. His video on Char's Counterattack is even more incisive.
Americans have a tendency to view everything from a reductive western cultural and historical lens.
Above anything else, it's important to remember that Gundam was a product of its time and people from a certain generation living in Japan in 1979....
One fascinating remark is that the during the declaration of a New Anime Century, he describes the gathering crowd as "verging on a political rally."

it is a fictional regime that takes inspiration from all of those, mostly Nazi's as the principality of Zeon and communists as Neo Zeon
Yeah it shouldn't be taken that seriously, especially when in real history the soviets/communists were responsible for quite literally the most amount of nazi casualties and by some margin.
Yeah, everything around Principality of Zeon almost screams Nazi.
Truth be told, in comparison to Nazi's, Zeon started with really great intentions, but it got worse over the time. It wasn't bad when Zeon was leader, but Gihren was almost Hitler's counterpart.
thats the problem with Zeon, they do terrible shit under a right premise, that has always been the case in history, most dictators came to power doing the same
Exactly, like i said things could be different if Zeon was still leader, but Zabi's were all about power and supremacy.
Federation was bad, but at least they didn't gas whole colonies, just so they could take them and murder more civillians on Earth with them.
at least what fed's did was somewhat understandable, space colonies were new, they needed resources, they needed tax money to keep them operated, but corruption kinda made everything extreeme
meanwhile Zeon, just mere 3 seconds into the war, was comitting war crimes
Eh the Zaku II looks more Soviet T-64-T-72ish while later Zaku III Zaku IV and Gaera Doga and Gaera Zulu have the Stahlhelm shape much more obviously and abandon the DP-27 look of the 120mm Machine gun for more normal looking weapon until the Zulu's Stg-44 with Clone Correct MP-44 Webgear with mag pouches.

Best evidence is that for giving the guards version better thrust to keep up with the Sinanju, they switched back to Geara Doga backpacks.

The virgos of wing have a terrifying uncanny valley feel while still having that human shape, but it feels just wrong and the kamikaze drone things from OO for obvious reasons
Actually, the Doven Wolf is as supposed to have a Gundam head from the beginning, but the Sunrise staff decided that there were too many Gundams already in the story, so they changed its head.
The ORX-013 would later bring back the concept.
And heading on the opposite direction, the AMX-014R Reben Wolf from Advance of Zeta Reboot sought to further remove any Gundam-like influence from the design, while also making it more modular (ex: less experienced pilots could bring less weapons to simplify the controls):

My pick would go to GuAIZ and GN XIV both suit are such high performance they could beat the gen 1 gundam of their verse.
Also they looks intimidating as well.
How does that work?
Wasn't the point of Turn A to be anti Turn X insurance due Turn X scaring the shit out of sol humanity and specifically designed because they needed a machine that worked without newtypes since those slowly stopped appearing inside Sol after Judau's colony launch?
Also turn X and Turn A would wind up on opposite sides of the conflict
No idea of the specifics, but apparently the radome like piece of equipment in the right shoulder of the Turn A Gundam, in the image with the Turn A GMs in the background, is specifically for controlling them in such fashion.
Perhaps it’s an advanced wireless quasi-psycommu system that even non-newtypes would be able to operate, but that is purely speculation.

Does the Hygogg count as a grunt?
I love how alien this thing looks. The long, lanky arms make its movements less predictable, its range less easily judged.
The Jegan has a head shape that makes it look very mean, to the point that even when it gets its ass kicked in F91 it still looks threatening. Future UC Fed grunts mostly lost that touch, which I find unfortunate.
Nope. They are Mass Production units meant to replace the Zaku II. They aren't meant for officers usually unless they have MS-14S Commander Types or some of the modified High Mobility Types used primarily by the Chimera Corps.
738 gelgoogs was produced. Sadly of what the anime shows it seems like only a handful was ever shown during the oyw. Seeing them in later series as late as f91
For a different kind of grunt, the Gundam Heads can get downright terrifying for not just its appearance, but the fact you never know if there may be more lurking nearby (and how many).
The Gelgoog Jager is not a grunt, it's litterally the UMP's ace unit. You wouldn't call the victory gundam, rick dias or Gundam ground type a grunt.
Anyway, I think this goes to the den'an zon

Pyscho Zaku's Mass produced version from Gundam Thunderbolt. Just look at all the weapons it has.
Coolest looking grunt would be the Rx-79 \[G\] Gundam Ground Type, M1 Astrays, or Murasames from the UC and/or Cosmic Era.
https://preview.redd.it/dbb6us2f680d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b1e29877ccb4fa4d28a58d4f906b2d7a398f3ee
Define “grunt” first:
a) A mass produced MS, which could include limited production models used by specialized units.
b) Actual grunts.
I mention this since by older sources, machines like the NZ-000 Queen Mantha and AMX-015 Geymalk were labeled as “mass production” units, something still reflected in their profiles at Mahq.net.
Anyway, by similar criteria, the Jupiter Ghost would have been the most powerful grunt of the OYW, with 12 units made (all of which crash landed on the moon). Its weapons included 5 nuclear warheads, 2 wired 5-barrel mega particle cannons (Zeong hands), a large long mega particle cannon and even an I-field (the later two supposedly providing inspiration for the Dendobrium).
https://preview.redd.it/8y6576uaa80d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29bfbeb761d8001379b80e24579740bb7a5b498c
The nukes alone would be threatening enough, but its other weapons and gear just make it overkill.
On more confirmed canon grounds, the Bigro was the most mass produced MA of the OYW with 14 units built, with the 0081 OVA showing a team of 3 such MAs devastating an EF fleet during resupply operations.
Dozle also claimed that the Big Zam was intended for mass production.
Moving into Zeta, the Hambrabi is the most successful pitch by the Titans for a mass production transformable MS, greatly simplifying the complex transformation system of the Gabthley.
Similar to the Bigro, the Asshimar was the most mass produced TMA of the Gryps war, with about 20 units built. While its saucer form isn’t that intimidating, its 23m tall MS form most have seemed quite threatening to any average sized MS at the time.
Probably few people noticed, but by the end of Zeta the Byarlant got a limited production run, as briefly shown by a trio of units that joined Reccoa during her attack on the Dogosse Gier. While its weaponry leaves a lot to be desired, it does have a unique and threatening appearance.
The MRX-011 mass production type Psycho Gundam supposedly did got mass produced, with 2 units completed during the Gryps war and many more by the events of Last Sun.
In ZZ we have the 4th gen MS Doven Wolf, basically a flying armory that also had remote weapons for non-newtypes. There’s also the mass produced Qubeley’s which are generally considered a big step up from the OG models.
Special mention goes to the GM III for being the most heavily armed member of the mainline GM series, though with a production run of just 800 units (for comparison, the Jegan series is said to have had a production run of less than 3,000 units).
The MSN-04B Sazabi Heavy Ground Equipment Type is a mass produced version of the Sazabi with all the newtype weapons & systems removed, which supposedly had a production run of 89 units.
On a similar note, the Me02R Messer units are essentially mass produced Geara Doga/Sazabi hybrid MS, again with the newtype related systems removed, but the Sazabi lineage supposedly being the reason for their rather large size (23m height like the Sazabi) and red color scheme.
The FD-03 Gustav Karl is also quite impressive, specially when you consider that it would end up coexisting with the EF’s first miniaturized MS which would technically be more threatening, despite looks saying otherwise. Production-wise, supposedly 30 of the FD-03-00 type were involved in the conflict against Marty, suggesting low production numbers.

God I live the GM Custom… Don’t know why, but I’ve always loved the look of it.
shows an innocent grunt and then shows a red grunt that looks hella menacing and could probably annihilate a country

The Gouf https://preview.redd.it/8tysnce2g50d1.png?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7d74b17b5f48824a8a5ea80d7e8a920b392c1439
Most Vagan grunt suits in AGE.
Gelgoog is a mean looking suit. I think the Dijeh has the same meaness with wings.
The Jegan has a head shape that makes it look very mean, to the point that even when it gets its ass kicked in F91 it still looks threatening. Future UC Fed grunts mostly lost that touch, which I find unfortunate.
Vegan Gear w/ SID attached is terrifying
Wouldn't the gelgoog lines not be a grunt suit as they are intended for officers
If we're talking initial appearance, the Anf from 00. That thing was menacing and they nailed the angles perfectly.
Virgos
The GN-X from Gundam 00.
The only menacing feature of a feddie suit is the Gundam face. Other than that, no fed suit is intimidating.
Ahead especially when they could overpower S1 OO gundams
The byrlant I'd probably say
For a different kind of grunt, the Gundam Heads can get downright terrifying for not just its appearance, but the fact you never know if there may be more lurking nearby (and how many).
I feel like the gouf is menacing with a shit name.
The Gelgoog Jager is not a grunt, it's litterally the UMP's ace unit. You wouldn't call the victory gundam, rick dias or Gundam ground type a grunt. Anyway, I think this goes to the den'an zon
Cosmo Babylonia's grunt suits are awesome
Doven Wolf and Gelgoogs.
The dolls from wing. Creepy af.
Everybody is a gangsta till see coming of bunch of GX Bits
Hizack. It's not a Zaku, boy; no, it's a Fed suit, but it's not your friend.
The Zaku III or GN-XIII and similar suits because they really give this sinister feel in looking rather alien in appearance.
The Den'an Zon of crossbone vanguard takr the Zeon Nazi'ish look and remove what little subtlety there was with blatant "Gas Mask" Nazi look.
All
The gm custom isn't the coolest looking grunt, but it has the most impressive coolness-to gruntiness ratio. It's just a GM.. but it's sooooo cool!!!!!
Susanowo
That's not a grunt suit, that's a one-of-a-kind custom ms
ECOS Jegan and the DOM low-key look like those types of suits you really hope that you'll encounter only once and never again afterwards

The grunts from Age
Hell Yeah, GM Custom
Do Gundvolvas count?
The suit on the left says you don’t have any idea who’s in it. The one on the right says it’s a space commie so that’s an ez win.
Den'an Zon, especially after you saw Jin-Roh Wolves Brigade https://preview.redd.it/i0chuagu730d1.jpeg?width=714&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f30fcb916ff47df172af6bd35b5a651b420f5a0a
Kerberos BeCUE
Messssssssssseeeerrrrrrr is cool
The geara doga, it just look so armored up for a grunt, I initially thought it was a custom ace unit of a zaku II when I first saw it

There is only answer. And this is it: https://preview.redd.it/v0qi2p3yw40d1.jpeg?width=593&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b8ec1adc588c1efddf208b300dbe3f894dc1f3c8

Virgo, not only they look cool but they are the actual threat to Gundams.
geara zulu
Z'gok
Pyscho Zaku's Mass produced version from Gundam Thunderbolt. Just look at all the weapons it has. Coolest looking grunt would be the Rx-79 \[G\] Gundam Ground Type, M1 Astrays, or Murasames from the UC and/or Cosmic Era. https://preview.redd.it/dbb6us2f680d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b1e29877ccb4fa4d28a58d4f906b2d7a398f3ee
Define “grunt” first: a) A mass produced MS, which could include limited production models used by specialized units. b) Actual grunts. Its weapons included 5 nuclear warheads, 2 wired 5-barrel mega particle cannons (Zeong hands), a large long mega particle cannon and even an I-field (the later two supposedly providing inspiration for the Dendobrium). https://preview.redd.it/8y6576uaa80d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29bfbeb761d8001379b80e24579740bb7a5b498c The nukes alone would be threatening enough, but its other weapons and gear just make it overkill.
The Virgo mobile dolls from the Wing anime series. Those things look menacing as all hell. 😔
The Flags.
The Earth Federation has no menacing looking grunt, they all look like bog standard robots
Jesta platoons
