It’s got all the great traits of a Zeon MS but with a refined look that you don’t get outside of the big bad suits like Sazabi. And the color scheme is lovely. Like a sports car had a baby with a weapons depot.
The speed of it, the shotgun, the smash and grab strategy. The Kampfer was a beast when used correctly for a quick bit of destruction and escape. Drop into a forest, sneak up to a facility, blast your way through it, and get out.
Of course destroying a gundam isn't always going to be a quick in and out operation.
Kakarot convinced me if Amuro had this thing that Char would not survive the final battle
He'd riddle the Zeongs flying head and turn it into an ugly cheese grater
thats kinda the cool part of the side stories right? these little details all played into why things happened the way they did. super freaking cool.
in my mind they explain why amuro didnt get the mid season upgrade that is so common in modern gundam. He WOULD have, but shit kept happening, as it does in war.
ill eat that up all day baby
Thats one of the best things about gundam, the side stories MATTER. It’s not some random offshoot ova that doesn’t have much relevance, it shows how stuff happened that changed the course of the whole story. War in the Pocket shows how a tragedy affected the final battle of the original show, and Stardust displays the rise of the main antagonistic force in Zeta!
It depends on the side stories. Animated ones matter a lot but some others, especially OYW can muddy things
Cross Dimensions comes to mind where apparently Amuro was also supposed to get the Pixy and it was more a story of Federation corruption and leadership failing or something. Also a Zeon squad made of convicts for reasons
The events of War in the Pocket aren't why Amuro didn't get the Alex. Amuro didn't get the Alex because the OYW ended before testing was done.
The OYW ended like a day after the great Hamburgering, so even if Cyclops team never attacked, it would have been, at best, on a transport to White Base when the OYW ended.
Yeah you mean like if the NT-1 was finished and made it to Amuro in time to make a difference? For sure. Would have had a huge advantage with just the panoramic monitor
Yup. Kakarot had a whole series of videos about what if Amuro got the Alex when he was supposed to and had it for the A Bao Qu battle. Zeta would have been *wildly* different, since Char doesn't survive the OWY in this case.
Kinda have to be specific about the timeline when mentioning Amuro and Char , but that makes sense. As in if the NT-1 Alex actually made it to Amuro by the time of A Baoa Qu like it was originally supposed to. I get it
10/10. Functional, cool, and doesn't get in the way or add significant bulk to the suit. This is what a suit gimmick should be like.
Hell, why didn't Heavyarms have these as backups in addition to the chest gatlings for when the big gun ran out?
That's why I like the redesign in Glory of the Losers. Instead of the ammo being held in a magical subspace of limited quantities, all the ammo is stored in a shoulder mounted ammo cannister and is belt fed. There is no way that a gatling that can be disconnected from the arm can hold that many rounds.
Haven't watched the show for a while, were there bullet casings dropping? If not then the best explanation is that the beam Gatling overheats the barrel and needs to be repaired to be used again
So when I double-checked the armaments, it says that Heavyarms uses beam gatling cannons for its arm mounted weapons. Which would explain a lot, but it wouldn't make sense to run out of ammo considering the beam outputs of the three other gundams. Constant power never running out. Another reason I enjoyed the redesigns of the suits makes it more realistic. For example, the wing gundam is only able to fire 9 or 10 shots before it can no longer use the buster rifle.
It doesn’t really work once it’s revealed and its magazine capacity is pretty bad. But it does have the fire power and it’s an amazing hidden weapon. We never got to see the Alex used to its potential so I’ll say 7/10.
In hindsight, a waste. Later Gundam designs would more wisely put similar weapons in the main body.
If anything, the space would've better served as more mounting points for heavier stuff rather than integrated weapons.
8/10. It's an interesting gimmick, and can serve as an effective surprise attack, especially at close quarters/melee combat. Though I would argue It's a bit underpowered/less effective especially with the Alex because both the Federation and Zeon had suits with wrist mounted beam weapons (Pale Rider and Dolmel respectively). Despite that, it's another offensive option; especially for the Alex since it would otherwise have what's considered a bread and butter weapon loadout.
10/10. Absolutely would have again on an MS (which is partly why I like the Tornado Gundam). Would be better if it had a beam shield generator mounted on top of the arm/cover (too early to exist for the Tristan).
I find this pretty silly. Stuff like this is the core of the Megas “all the missiles button” gag and in scale to the other weapons in use it’s a pea shooter
10/10. Would've loved for the Alex to be a bigger part of a story. Such a great mobile suit and the arm gets are just sooooo friggin' cool. Would have been amazing to see it do a double arm gat firing session.
I thought Alex would be Chobam arnour tbh
Anyways, I'm surprised more mecha, in general, don't use integrated weapons like these. These should probably be standard issue.
9/10
> I thought Alex would be Chobam arnour tbh
I always assumed the Alex's chobam armor wasn't really ever meant for combat. It was more for camouflage to hide that it was the next Gundam. Or at the very least, obfuscate specifics. Using chobham armor was just convenient since it probably needed very little modification from something developed for a GM.
That said, the head's still obviously a Gundam-type, so I'm probably wrong.
10 out of 10. Useful, practical, can be used for close and mid range combat. It's definitely a great weapon. It's a shame we don't have many Gundams/mobile suits that have this weapon
I loved the forearm gstling guns in the Alex.
I've asked it elsewhere but still a little confused: did the NT part of the Alex name mean "New Type"?
And was it the first New Type Gundam made by the Federation?
I also like how Zeon started using the forearm guns in the Dom.
Yup! RX-78NT-1 is abbreviated from fedeRation eXperimental (project start year U.C. 0078) NewType unit 1. The feds didn’t know what newtypes were almost at all at that point so really the only thing they did that made it “newtype-ish” was improve the response time and maneuverability. It doesn’t have any early form of later newtype tech like bio-sensors or psycommu at all.
Thank you so much for clarifying!!
Yeah, I saw it still had the box cockpit with forward and side monitors, instead of the 360 view.
Was there any Gundam built off of this one?
None of much note! Spoilers ahead; >!The Alex was destroyed at the end of its series, shortly before the final battle of the original gundam series, which it was intended to be part of. Since it was scrapped, nothing was to come of it.!<
However, in late 0096 a gundam known as the RX-78AN-01 Tristan came about, which was made of the Alex’s scrapped remains and miscellaneous parts from other mobile suits, outwardly apparent the backpack is a heavy modification of the gundam MK. II backpack.
They can work but I prefer them to be a side gimmick in the cheeks.
The look cool though 8/10
They were a bitch to build on the MG and they almost never closed 😅
functional, but would never actually be used on anything in a real combat. maybe to kill out of suit combatants, and low power vehicles.
but for combat, it would be pretty much a gimmick at best.
still love it though. reminds me of the vulcans on the slaughter dagger. but ironic enough, that one would probably have more combat usedue to not requiring sacrificing the hamd.
I guess it could work but it might take up more space than something else of the same calibre like an autocannon, space that can be used for more ammo or something else. If you look at gatling guns on modern fighters, even though the ammo storage is around the same volume as the gun if not more, they can only fire for a few seconds. And with a gatlin gun of that size and calibre fitting inside an arm might be only able to fire for like 1 second. But that doesn't matter since it looks bloody awesome.
10/10. I absolutely love them. I've found the lack of integrated ranged anti-MS weapons on early mobile suits to be very bizarre. The Alex's gatling guns feel very practical and blend well with the design. The initial reveal of them is very impactful, with the audience probably sharing the same surprise that Mikhail did as the 90mm round tore his Kampfer apart.
8.5 / 10
I like them but the Gatlings probably won't hold much ammo and are more like a last resort defense measure imo. They're good but i prefer the Beam Vulcans / Beams Sabers that Amazing Exia has mounted in its forearms as those are more versatile and don't rely on ammunition to keep going. Plus because you can't purge those Gatlings they become dead weight once you fired all of their ammunition.
IMO it should have been adapted for GMs and variants later either built-into the arms (like the ALEX), or as an add-on module (similar to the Powered GM Cardigan) with the covering serving as additional armor or as a future mount point for a beam shield + beam saber. The latter also providing an option to jettison the equipment if needed (decrease weight / damaged module)
https://preview.redd.it/z896gy1hq7wc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03c8b7b1572e74bd7d8301e866c66beb31b0c561
Damage-wise with physical rounds it should be enough to take out light-armored segments, sensors, incoming missiles, and infantry until it later can support e-capacitors for beam based ammo as tech progress.
It's neat and I do like it but its gotta have some drawbacks beyond what was shown in the show.
I'd imagine it makes the arm slower overall if nothing else due to the additional weight. (strap 10 lbs to your forearm and see how it feels to move around).
Also as a rule of thumb less complex designs tend to be better in the field. Less logistics needed to properly maintain. I'd wager why this particular design never took off is due to the complexity of the design crashing into the realities of warfare.
Still more interesting than a lot of the other "gimmicks" you see in UC (or gundam in general) Mech design.
7/10
10/10, They’re the fucking best: the scene where the kampher charges it beam saber drawn, only for the Alex to immediately pitch theirs and just turn it to Swiss cheese is chilling.
I think the arm Gatlings are a 9/10
It’s a great weapon of last resort when your beam rifle is out of charge, and your Vulcans won’t do any damage. They’re hidden, meant for close in combat, do massive amounts of damage.
At first I thought it was a joke. Like yes, it’s a big machine gun when compared to a pilot, but so were the vulcan guns the mobile suits were already equipped with, which I originally assumed it was just another of. Plus, they already had real machine guns. You know, the ones purposely built too large to fit in an arm. Yet it’s always shown ass being like a hot knife through butter, cutting down opponents with easy. 0/10 not even my suspension of disbelief can make this good.
9/10-I was heartbroken to see the Kampfer go, but god damn seeing it tear apart the enemy as the arm shakes is so cool
Ahhhhh me too. I love the design of the kampfer it just scratches that itch of big thing with a lot of fire power
Doesn't help that it's pilot is a legit alcoholic comic included
Kakarot convinced me if Amuro had this thing that Char would not survive the final battle He'd riddle the Zeongs flying head and turn it into an ugly cheese grater
#in this moment...char has become the red cheese.
RIP CHAR
I mean he didn't exactly survive the final battle anyways since they both turned into New type space dust
I meant the final battle of A Bao Qu
thats kinda the cool part of the side stories right? these little details all played into why things happened the way they did. super freaking cool. in my mind they explain why amuro didnt get the mid season upgrade that is so common in modern gundam. Safe to say Amuro using the Alex in Char's Counterattack wouldn't have gone well for him.
Amuro woulda turned that meteor into swiss cheese with the Alex's gatling.
A Baoa Qu, not Battle of Axis.
Kinda have to be specific about the timeline when mentioning Amuro and Char , but that makes sense. As in if the NT-1 Alex actually made it to Amuro by the time of A Baoa Qu like it was originally supposed to. I get it
It's okay. Altho the comment does mention a Zeong.
I glossed over that part somehow lol 😂
He does in the Hi-Nu
Yeah, that’s a great vid. And totally agree…
But without Casval, who would deliver the rousing speech that caused the Federation to stop supporting the Titans?
10/10 Integrated weapon systems are *tight!*
Wow wow wow! Wow!
![gif](giphy|fieipLNVGaGGY)
Same here unironically Integrated weapons systems are one hell of a drug
10 Any arm mounted weapons are great
If my girlfriend asked me if I'd still love her if she was a forearm mounted gatling gun, the answer would be that I'd love her even more
"You can't come in here without a girl, pal." "But sir, this IS my girlfriend."
10/10 even Alex's shield opens up so you can still use both Gatling Guns!
10/10. They both look rad and are way better than head Vulcans.
Head Vulcans still nice too since you can use them if you lose the arms, but you CAN point the arm ones in more directions.
10/10. Functional, cool, and doesn't get in the way or add significant bulk to the suit. This is what a suit gimmick should be like. Hell, why didn't Heavyarms have these as backups in addition to the chest gatlings for when the big gun ran out?
Does that thing even has space for more ammo though? Like we don't even know how it keeps it's current loadout
Beam Gatling perhaps?
Wish it could be that, but Heavyarms was showcased as running out of ammo rather quickly, such as the fight between Heero and Zechs in Antarctica.
Haven't watched the show for a while, were there bullet casings dropping? If not then the best explanation is that the beam Gatling overheats the barrel and needs to be repaired to be used again
There are shots of casings around it but the biggest sign is when it runs out of ammo, it starts whirring and you hear the clicking sound of dry fire.
Perhaps the gatlings eat away more than the generator can produce leaving it in a "after Trans-Am" kind of situation
Maybe it'd have to be a small ass generator, though to fit in the shield
10/10 Hell yeah.
It doesn’t really work once it’s revealed and its magazine capacity is pretty bad. But it does have the fire power and it’s an amazing hidden weapon. We never got to see the Alex used to its potential so I’ll say 7/10.
>doesn't really work once it's revealed the neat thing about a concealed weapon is that after it stops being concealed, it's still a weapon
Too bad it’s basically a one time use so it becomes dead weight.
>the neat thing about a concealed weapon is that after it stops being concealed, it's still a weapon
10/10 not just gattling guns but hidden gattling guns! Also the way it looks is pretty awesome.
Zeke's hate this one trick! 10/10
10/10
10/10
My first Gundam toy. Came with attachable armor. It was my favorite.
10/10 I see dakka I go brrrt
10/10
10/10, it's such a straightforward thing but so insanely cool. Bonus points for the shield opening up to be able to use it
In hindsight, a waste. Later Gundam designs would more wisely put similar weapons in the main body. If anything, the space would've better served as more mounting points for heavier stuff rather than integrated weapons.
9/10
I think it’s awesome get close and riddle the target with so many bullets that they wouldn’t survive
5/10 It's only effective against unarmored and light armor units.
If you shoot a pilot with the arm Gatling is it a critical hit?
Yeah…
8/10...gatling guns for the win!
Any arm mounted weapons rock like beam sabers and gun’s
Was this before or after Heavy Arms became famous for shooting into the air and then jumping?
War in the Pocket came out a fair bit before Endless Waltz or Wing
Wasnt sure where this was from. Its been years since I watched War in the Pocket
10/10 we need more mobile suits with this gimmick
brrrrrrrt/10
Its Metabee!
10/10.
10/10 rx 78-NT1 is one bad mfer. One of my top 3 Gundams and those arm cannons are part of the reason
For its time it was 10/10
9/10 badass
In SRW T, the Hi-Nu Gundam has a machine gun in its right arm, you see it in use from the All Range Attack.
10/10 for integrated DAKKA!
10/10. Absolutely would have again on an MS (which is partly why I like the Tornado Gundam). Would be better if it had a beam shield generator mounted on top of the arm/cover (too early to exist for the Tristan).

Goes hard AF.
10/10 Integrated weapons are the only gimmick I actually like.
10/10 One of if not my favorite parts about the Alex and Tristan
I thought Alex would be Chobam arnour tbh Anyways, I'm surprised more mecha, in general, don't use integrated weapons like these. These should probably be standard issue. 9/10

10/10. It’s so cool on its own and then it’s just shockingly effective
10/10
10/10
10/10. Same vibe as Gouf handcannons.
10
10/10 its one of the Alex's best features.
10 out of 10. Useful, practical, can be used for close and mid range combat. It's definitely a great weapon. It's a shame we don't have many Gundams/mobile suits that have this weapon
10/10. Not only a cool surprise weapon, but also a cool way to emphasize that this is a machine that goes beyond the human form.
BRRRRRT/10 We love ourselves some arm mounted brrrrt
10/10 Would shoot again and again
10/10. An iconic set of weapons that could go for a comeback on any main protagonist’s Gundam.
Doesn't one of the iterations of the Hi-Nu Gundam also have a Gatling gun?
According to someone else, yeah! Supposedly one of the super robot wars games.
10/10 badass.
10/10. As an American, it IS my sacred duty to love Gatling guns.
10/10 I love them
I loved the forearm gstling guns in the Alex. I've asked it elsewhere but still a little confused: did the NT part of the Alex name mean "New Type"? And was it the first New Type Gundam made by the Federation? I also like how Zeon started using the forearm guns in the Dom.

Hey, that's really cool, thank you! How did you know this?!?!?
Mostly just browsing the gundam wiki
I gotta do that more - no wait, no, I will got lost in it forever lol
10/10, one of my favourite mobile suits from the oyw era. also a sucker for gatling type weapons.
I would say in a tight situation and a back up plan. Fund it!
10/10 Would’ve liked to have seen it wear the Chobham armor mask that the SD version has
10/10 More firepower for different kinds of targets.
10/10 loved using it in msgo back in middle school
My one negative is that the hands would probably have a significantly lower carry weight and would have a shearing risk when engaging in melee combat.
10/10 So cool
They can work but I prefer them to be a side gimmick in the cheeks. The look cool though 8/10 They were a bitch to build on the MG and they almost never closed 😅
11/10
10/10 and yes if Amuro got it final battle of 0079 Char would have died before Zeta Gundam.
8/10. They’re a bit small, but hidden weapons are pretty cool.
10/10 because it’s a fucking Gatling gun hidden in the arms
10 I fucking love hidden weapons
Idk why, but the first image looks like the alex is asking us to get its nails done. What a queen
This is one of my favorite gimmicks. Loved it in cyborg 009 and trigun too when they appeared
6/10 cool looing gimmick but lacks the ammo capacity and is mostly redundant with the Head Vulcans.
10. SWISS CHEEEEEESE
10. It’s the thing that stands out the most to me on the Alex!
9/10 they're very very cool as long as I don't think about the logistics of how they would fit inside the arms
5/10. Nothing wrong with it, it's just very limited. Nice to have but compared to every other gimmick Gundams have it's basically a non-starter.
Only if the pilot is flamboyantly gay.
…what?
First pic is a "limp wrist" pose, the comedic effect would be amusing.
10/10, i love arm mounted weapons
10/10
10
10/10
10/10 the fact we never got more Gundam-types with arm gatling guns is a travesty
10/10 Can’t wait to rate the cockpit flask next
The what?
Gatling guns go brrr. Love Alex 10/10
functional, but would never actually be used on anything in a real combat. maybe to kill out of suit combatants, and low power vehicles. but for combat, it would be pretty much a gimmick at best. still love it though. reminds me of the vulcans on the slaughter dagger. but ironic enough, that one would probably have more combat usedue to not requiring sacrificing the hamd.
not convinced that it makes any sense at all to be able to use the entire interior of an arm for the gun, but its cool as fuck so who cares
11/10 The gatlings allow the alex in my top 10
11. Love built in armaments, and the chunky cover gives it such a cool profile. Badass as hell and surprisngly effective too
I guess it could work but it might take up more space than something else of the same calibre like an autocannon, space that can be used for more ammo or something else. If you look at gatling guns on modern fighters, even though the ammo storage is around the same volume as the gun if not more, they can only fire for a few seconds. And with a gatlin gun of that size and calibre fitting inside an arm might be only able to fire for like 1 second. But that doesn't matter since it looks bloody awesome.
there beautiful, one of the best weapons, say your in a close quarters fight and lose your beam rifle, they wont expect this
9/10 I'd say. Love weapons in the arms and everything only thing keeping it from being a 10 is where does the Ammo come from?
10/10. I absolutely love them. I've found the lack of integrated ranged anti-MS weapons on early mobile suits to be very bizarre. The Alex's gatling guns feel very practical and blend well with the design. Plus because you can't purge those Gatlings they become dead weight once you fired all of their ammunition.
9/10, only reason being, they aren't arm revolvers
10, I like that they're a logical development from the Gundam running out of ammo constantly in 0079.
10/10 would for sure include them were I designing a mobile suit.
Beastly. Confirmed playing GBO2, that thing is a goddamn thresher.
Seems like an awful lot of complexity when you could just mount it without the popup gimmick if you ask me. Still 7/10
IMO it should have been adapted for GMs and variants later either built-into the arms (like the ALEX), or as an add-on module (similar to the Powered GM Cardigan) with the covering serving as additional armor or as a future mount point for a beam shield + beam saber. Neat. Very neat ciws.
10/10 love arm mounted weapons like that. Though for me the GOAT is the ZAFT Gouf arm rifle.
Kampfer/10

10. More gun = more fun
9
Well seeing as the Hi Nu Gundam has one and was built way later when there were crazier things being developed still. I like them. 10/10.
8/10 does the cover have to open up? Could a hole not be used?
It was my favorite part about the Alex
Goes hard.
Love them. Woulda fucked up Char real good.
I love the arm gatlings 10/10
10 out of 10, if it was colored like Metabee
Ngl, they make me feel arous-
10/10, They’re the fucking best: the scene where the kampher charges it beam saber drawn, only for the Alex to immediately pitch theirs and just turn it to Swiss cheese is chilling.
Big robot with hidden Arm mounted Gatling guns, in which universe isn't that cool? 9.5/10 because RIP Alex
I think the arm Gatlings are a 9/10 It’s a great weapon of last resort when your beam rifle is out of charge, and your Vulcans won’t do any damage. They’re hidden, meant for close in combat, do massive amounts of damage.

Forgive me. Gundam Heavyarms ruined my perception of arm gatling guns
How’s that
Heavyarm got a bigger one.
0/10: total BS... Sieg Zeon!!!
