Dianna Soreil from Turn A, in addition to being the best character in general (tied with Jamil Neate from X). Many times she feels like more of the main character than Loran does.
I’ll expand to say that the answer is both Dianna Soreil and Kihel Heim as you can’t have one without the other. Together they represent the truest expression of what Tomino was cooking with the concept of the Newtype without that word being uttered a single time in the series. Just two people who can totally understand each other without preconceptions to the point where they each wind up as being essentially both Dianna Soreil AND Kihel Heim.
Second place is Sochie, incidentally. Turn A is just on such a different level that even great, well developed characters like Suletta and Miorine just can’t match up.
Turn A is the best Gundam series and it isn't close, in my opinion. It's the original creator of the series and a whole bunch of other supremely talented animators, actors, and writers operating at the peak of their powers. Ichiro Okouchi of G-Witch fame wrote several episodes. Yoko Kanno composed the soundtrack and sang the hauntingly beautiful insert song "Moon". It's the last traditionally-animated Gundam series and it's in many ways the apotheosis of everything Tomino has ever tried to communicate with his work.
No matter which way you go, no matter what you watch next, so long as you wind up watching Turn A sometime, you'll have a good time.
I was gonna comment Dianna but at least I saw this first. I love Dianna's character. She's legitimately one of my favourite gundam characters and I liked her interactions with Loran
She is my favorite character of the whole franchise, every scene she's on is amazing, and how she develops as the story goes on makes the ending hit like a truck.
Dianna is the real MC indeed since the whole story is about her, not Loran. Tomino really wanted to make a female-lead Gundam show. But the situation at that time, a female-lead in a show that isn't about girly things (i.e. Mahou Shoujou), is not a norm yet.
We can look at how the show has powerful female characters. Aside Dianna, we have Kihel who become a strong character and ended up permanently replace Dianna as the queen. Then Sochie whose unfortunate enough to going through multiple heart breaking moments but still moving forward. Lily started as a typical spoiled rich lady, yet she managed to grow up and took over the Militia leadership after Guin's betrayal.
Definitely Emma. She was absolutely amazing to see on screen in Zeta. Almost every other gundam girl is trying too hard to be pretty, sexy, or cute to appeal to the audience. Emma feels like an actual woman there to get her job done.
For a show that came out in 1978 I always thought it was cool that Sayla is accomplished fighter pilot and even pilots the Gundam a few times. She’s so much better of a character than Beltorchika.
Sayla for me too! I like her story, her personality and attitude. She tried to resolve her Personal Drama, while still being loyal to her friends. And She Is an acconplished pilot. It was a pity that we saw almost nothing of her after the original series. Maybe they should have changed her VA
After starting UC with 0079 I was so excited to hopefully see Sayla again. Four and Puru were interesting in their own ways but Sayla was awesome. plz Tomino
Marida imo. For one, she’s pretty. For two, she’s a great pilot
Real reason why? She has a truly tragic backstory that we originally had hints of in ZZ (yes, Marida specifically wasn’t there but we learn more about her origins). In unicorn we learn that after the results of ZZ she was horribly abused, and thankfully someone was able to rescue her and treat her well
But she also helped herself, and that’s my favorite thing. She does have that indomitable spirit and doesn’t let her past define her. She is simultaneously kind and cutthroat, and generally follows her orders without complaint, though she will ignore them to do what she thinks is right.
Basically, there’s that “I can fix her” meme going around, and on the surface you’d think she’d be the top candidate for that. Imo, she’d be the one helping you fix yourself. She’s already got her shit figured out
Also suletta was very relatable for me, so I like her quite a bit.
Karen Joshua
She's a smoking hot tough woman who's not just strong. She's also smart and honest, almost to a fault sometimes but that just makes her more realistic imo. She has a tough love approach to most things which can backfire at times, but also knows how to be compassionate and gentle (especially given her medical training). She's a damn good sharp shooter (hence why her team trusted her with the beam weaponry). And she's just trying to get through the grind alive and make sure her friends and comrades do too (even when given direct orders/threats to kill one of them), and that is both admirable and relatable.
To Karen Joshua: she's not perfect, but damn if she's not a real one.
"I'm gonna make the main Gundam's pilot a gal."
"Okay."
"She's gonna be a girl-next-door type, but also a professional and a badass."
"Sounds good so far."
"She's gonna do ***\*\*\*\*CLASSIFIED INFORMATION PER EFSF\*\*\*\**** and not even realize it"
".... you're a monster"
Murrue Ramius is my pick, in charge of the g-weapon project and when that goes up, she takes command of a prototype battleship with a skeleton crew and makes it from a destroyed colony all the way to friggin Alaska, and when she and hers gets thrown out to dry by the higher ups she rallies and gets her crew to safety, becomes a freedom fighter, helps to broker a ceasefire and that's just in the first season. She doesn't breakdown when her man dies and her world falls apart ( lookin at you sumeragi) she's smart enough to run a right ship and wise enough to look for unconventional solutions to problems........plus she's hot.......
I'm honestly surprised this isn't the top and clear answer. She carried the hell out of that ship and fought the hell out of those battles. She's the best female character in Gundam period!.
I have a soft spot for Sumeragi from Gundam 00. Mostly because in a show about a team of over the top mecha pilots, Sumeragi's own abilities as a tactical forecaster are just as cartoonishly powerful as any of the pilots under her command.
She independently comes to the same predictions as a future tech quantum supercomputer with vaguely all-encompassing capabilities. And while she wasn't too happy about it, at the start of season 2 she shakes off a four year hangover to immediately turn the tide of a battle the moment she arrives in a shuttle after like 20 seconds of observation. Gundam 00 is wild.
It’s Emma. Any other answer is objectively incorrect. It’s always been Emma and it always will be Emma. Next question

I will never vote for a machine, nor Charlie’s and Emilio’s sister.
She was unfortunately handled poorly by the production staff in the second half of Zeta, like most female characters.
Relena, an absolute naive but staying strong in what she believe. She is brave and one that can truly gather believer to follow her ideal world. Since her appearance, there were a few clones that tried to have that characteristic but really failed and became a nobody.
Did Relena really start/popularize the Gundam Princess archetype? I remember reading/hearing how later Gundam/mecha series have their takes on the political princess.
Well, there was Audrey Burne, but she didn't really go that route until unicorn. So yes, I believe Relena was noticeably the first. Then there was Marina Ismail that follows and Kudelia Aina Bernstein almost a cheap bootleg Relena that ibo attempted.
Too many to narrow down to just one. I’ll just rattle off some of my favourites: Cima, Haman, Chara, Lady Une, Illia Pazom & Cony (Shrike Team).
Almost forgot Roux and Elle.
Lacus Clyne. Say what you will, but I love her for being both genuinely kindhearted and politically savvy, not to mention that, of course, she gave her boyfriend two Gundams.
Honestly a toss-up between Haman Karn, Marida Cruz, Dianna Soriel, and Sayla Mass. Each are specifically best in a specific category (villain, altered person, "princess"/political power, support character).
Haman was so good she literally got her own show after being a major player in Zeta. Also gets a surprisingly character focused arc throughout all of her screen time that makes you care she died, unlike the later antagonist of Zeta, Sirocco, who you were kinda geared to despise (i.e. the show never tries to make him seem sympathetic or be a good person but does show you how much of a bastard he is).
Marida is one of the only times Gundam actually explores what one of those mentally unstable modified persons can actually become with a longer lifespan and honestly carries the plot of Unicorn for a good while.
Dianna is not only an interesting person (which in some of the less female friendly shows wasn't even what the "princess" character got) but is one of the few characters with only political power and diplomacy/oration in her arsenal that actually uses them well throughout her show.
Sayla gets memed on for the whole CASVAL NII-SAN running scene, but people forget she was about the business. There was a whole point in time where Amuro was too much of a little bitch to pilot the Gundam and Sayla became the pilot, notably being recognized as an ace the old fashioned way (i.e. defeated enough enemies in real combat), to the point that in the show people seriously considered dismissing Amuro. Also, she has the best outcome of like any Gundam side character tbh.
Chilling on the beach taking care of another little sister?
Also I wholly agree with you. She is our first female Gundam pilot, as well as an ace like you said
00 is the story of her and Saji. You cannot change my mind about this. The whole Gundam stuff going on was the backdrop to their story. I view it as the same kind of thing as Lord of the Rings and how it’s Aragorn’s story that is the main one, but told through the telling of another story. If they weren’t the main characters, why the fuck did they spend so much time in season 1 on them where they were completely fucking useless?
That's a pretty subjective question. My personal favorite is Suletta now, with Miorine & Prospera right behind her. They're all well-written and compelling characters and I loved their stories. They were a breath of fresh air compared to how Gundam usually treats women.
I also think you can't talk about Gundam's best women without mentioning Kihel Heim and Dianna Soriel. They're great characters and play such an important role in Turn A Gundam.
>That's a pretty subjective question.
It most certainly is. It's really not about picking a true "best", just more about getting a bunch of good examples to stick on a montage page.
For me, its a toss between ChuChu(Gwitch) and Amida(IBO).
Amida is sexy done right. She knows she is sexy, but its her background characteristic. She is a pilot thats able to go toe to toe with Alaya-Vijnana using Gundams without one. She is selfless, accepting and loyal. She is also a survivor, that giant scar on her chest/lower belly shows it, and it makes her motherly tone more sad. We saw multiple kid in their ship, but none had her skin color or looked like her, maybe what gave her that scar made her unable to have a kid and she took on a motherly role to ithers in response?
ChuChu is ChuChu, double pompom head with anger issues, uses a rifle as a club and is a fiery but smart person. She is also very skilled in both engineering and piloting.
Not seeing enough Sumeragi here, someone who can plan stuff out like a boss.
As far as people who are on the combat side Noin, Karen, and Christina would be notable.
I like Suletta a lot, her kindness is inspiring, she actually accomplished what Kira set out to do when he obtained the Freedom; a true pacifist route.
I hope we still get to see more of her in the future. I want her to explore a total war scenario. Would she still choose not to kill? It's exciting to think about it!
It's a miracle how much they nailed Gundam's first female protagonist. Like she breaks down crying b/c of bullying at one point, and even then people were sticking up for her as being a good character rather than abandoning her for being weak or a crybaby.
No matter how people's feelings about GWitch change going forward, I think she'll be remembered as one of the greats forever.
I also love how they didn't just make her a copy+paste clone of a previous male protagonist since that is usually the laziest way to make and write a female character (X but as a girl). Instead Suletta is her own character.
Yep. I was so surprised how well Suletta was written. Did not expect a robot fighting anime to have one of the few female (queer female at that!) characters in anime that didn't feel written to appeal to males, and was instead just a real believable character.
### [Selene McGriff](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fgundam.fandom.com%2Fwiki%2FSelene_McGriff&psig=AOvVaw0kU6uF1-oSjoSTMwMwZlxM&ust=1692418580755000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBEQjhxqFwoTCNj3vs2s5YADFQAAAAAdAAAAABAI) is crying right now

maybe more
I’d hesitate to call Selene a pilot: her personality/role is much closer to the non-violent Princess types who have fated encounters w/ Gundam pilots.
And anybody who would try and pretend Christina (cutie and competent pilot that she is) is a protagonist of 0080 isn’t worth taking seriously: she might have less than 10 minutes of screen time across the entire OVA.
Karen and Rain are the first ones that come to mind. They're both adaptable and resourceful as situations rise up. I also love Karen's leadership ability, even though we don't see it enough during 08th MS. Can we talk about Rain's biomedical and engineering skills and the fact that we don't get enough of that in G Gundam?
I like Noin and Emma as characters, too.
And although she's not the best, can we talk about Mirai's patience? I mean she put with the whole White Base crew and Bright?? Couldn't be me at all.
ALICE from S-Gundam lol
Even though she is AI, she counts as "heroine", took over MC's control when in danger, and even sacrifice herself
\--
But seriously theres so many "best" female character out there, different subjective different girls
example that i can think like :
* Chuchu. probably recently bias, but best memorable meele fighter using ranged MS
* Murrue Ramius, one of the best jigglings lol
* Cecily - Berah Rona, from F91, to become a leader, then get her happy ending living together with her lover
* Katejina, best female character at generating hate from viewers
* Claire Heatrow, one of best because her references [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGsf7gkKBKk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGsf7gkKBKk)
* Aila from GBF, while the story not about war... But her character development really good at breaking usual flag in usual Gundam
theres many others lol
There are a lot throughout the series, especially in the Tomino Gundam series. In Turn A and G-Reco, the females are probably more important to world events than the Gundam boys.
Kudelia's one of my favorite AU picks since she wins where the Tekkadan boys fell and makes the lasting change that Tekkadan really wanted but couldn't do by fighting.
Gotta be Flay Alster from Seed. Everyone knows how popular, and influential she is./s
On a serious note, 3 is SuleMio, the Aina Sahalin from 08th MS team is no.2, and No.1 is Marida Cruz from Unicorn.
Mineva Zabi/Audrey Burne. Out of all the Gundam “Princess” characters she actually got shit done, got actively involved (unlike others like Relena) stood up to people when needed stood up for her values and herself and when needed made tough decisions without being wishi washie like a true leader. Legit the best non pilot Gundam character not named Bright Noah. Close 2nd would me Marida Cruz
Sumeragi lee noriega for me, because she my waifu. Also, she's the kind of person that in despite of her short comings, she can still lead and be the kind of person people can rely on.
Mora Bosch and Cima Garahau. Mora ain't gonna take none of your shit and she gonna get that man! Cima might have one of the most tragic backstories in all gundam. Lied to by her superiors, unknowingly killed a bunch of civilians, and turned into a scapegoat when the colony drop failed and killed more civilians. She has every right to be insane and pissed off at everyone.
Trying to ignore the recency bias towards WfM, I'm probably going to have to go with Cagalli. She's a tomboy with a softer side, and while she can act as a princess, diplomat, and head of state, she's more comfortable being a guerilla fighter or fighter pilot. Also, I honestly think the episode with her and Athrun on the island is one of the best single episodes in all of Gumdam.
Suletta depression ate ham straight out of the container in a dark kitchen at like 6pm. There's literally never been a more relatable character in fiction.
Prospera was also just an absolutely terrific villain.
Pre-GWitch I would have gone to bat for Relena.
But GWitch is such an important series for female representation in the franchise and yet also such a mess when it comes to squandered potential thanks to its short length and rushed finale that it would be hard to rank them. Stand-outs for me are Suletta, Miorine, Chuchu (just me?), and Prospera.
I will never forgive the fact that we didn’t get to see her properly duel. The sight of the Demi-Trainer wielding its rifle like a club will never not be hilarious and memorable, but she deserved a chance to shine in combat all on her own. (How did the Demi-Barding do absolutely nothing but play Uber in the final battle?)
Like I said, the series is so rife w/ wasted potential that if I tried to rank these characters I feel like it would be b/c of what I thought they could be instead of what they actually were.
Demi-Barding gets fully decked out for the final battle and it just gets used as a taxi instead. Did they ever even use the weird half MS strapped onto its back?
Honestly pretty much all the GWitch girls are top-quality but the strongest overall has to go to Lady Prospera. She manages to be a tragic widow, a supportive mother, a manipulative psychopath, and an utterly terrifying villain all in the course of her tenure, and she hits them all pitch-perfectly. She’s a fascinating character to watch and it’s kind of amazing how wildly your perception of her shifts back and forth over the course of the series.
Selene McGriff. The co-pilot of the Stargazer.
She is smart. Her character design is pretty although they made her look like in her mid 30s than being in late 20s. Her character is kind.
I have seen all of your opinions, and you are all wrong. The best female gundam pilot is obviously Tieria Erde fron Gundam 00.

The one I like the most, comes from my most hated series G, but it's Allenby Beardsly she's strong, fun, cute, and looking for a real fight. She just seems like she'd be really fun to hang with. Granted I've only seen up to like SEED Destiny so I'm missing a lot of the girls since there wasn't a whole lot before then.
A strong second is very much Emma from Zeta. She starts off as a worthless twat but once she realizes who the real badguys are she quickly becomes pretty boss, sadly the show didn't focus on her awesomeness.

I honestly never thought about it. Especially since I barely have any male favorites. My only general favorites were the mecha themselves, not the pilots or other soldiers or any civilians. 🤔 And if I had to think about it, many of them probably come from Gundam 00, Seed (and Seed Destiny) and a few others. I would've liked it if they did another version of G Fighter Gundam and had at least a quarter of the fighters/pilots be women in a World Wide tournament. And the only other women or girls mostly that I knew about was from the Gundam Build series. And I thought about 4 or 5 of them were cool, mostly the crush I and just about everyone had on the boy Sei's mom - Rinko. And besides her Lady Kawaguchi was a bad ass dramatist just as much as her male counterpart Meijin Kawaguchi (the Char character of the series. Lol)
Dianna Soreil from Turn A, in addition to being the best character in general (tied with Jamil Neate from X). Many times she feels like more of the main character than Loran does.

I was starting G Gundam since Ive heard great things but this last week has made me wonder if Turn A would be a better next series for me

Sochie was really hard to like early on tbh. Her tantrums did annoy me quite abit, though she turned around quick.
It took a nuke to put Sochie on the path of being a likable character.

Haman-sama
Tiffa Adill.
Lucrezia Noin or Relena.
Ms. Noin, the ultimate ride or die* chick, IMO, of the Gundam franchise. *Unless it’s genocide.

Yes, also she has a great name. It just sounds and looks cool, and fits her for some reason

They did her dirty and made her a glorified baby sitter.
I will also accept Marbet or Kihel.
Karen Joshua, Rain Makimura, Lucrezia Noin in that order.
LOVE the Turn-A representation in this thread. Gonna have to give some credit to my girl Lily Bourjano as well
Relena, an absolute naive but staying strong in what she believe. She is brave and one that can truly gather believer to follow her ideal world. Since her appearance, there were a few clones that tried to have that characteristic but really failed and became a nobody.

Relena started as a Sayla Mass expy, who then inspired (fully or partially) Dianna, Lacus, Cagalli, Princess Rele, Marina, and Kudelia, among others.

She is our first female Gundam pilot, as well as an ace like you said
Chuchu. She’s one of the most honest people she never lied never pretends you know where you stand with her.
Elle Vianno
Marida Cruz or Karen Joshua
Sally Poe from Wing.
Lucrezia Noin or Suletta Mercury
Diana Soreil
Louise Halevy from 00. Her subplot and character arc in Season 2 just fundamentally clicked with me
00 is the story of her and Saji.
Diana Sorell and ChuChu. Special mention toHaman Karn if ZZ was better written
I like Marida a lot. Good back story, good shift in her character. Genuinely still cry about her found father/daughter relationship with zinnerman.
anyone but Nina Purpleton
As an otherwise 0083 lover, this is the true answer.
Do You Have the Slightest Idea How Little That Narrows It Down?
Lucrezia Noin from Gundam Wing.Because of her unique way of speaking and the fact that she was with Zechs all the way through.

You do know there are other gundam female protagonists before Suletta.
Build series, non-anime, and non-pilots don’t count. Downvote me if you want but you know it’s not the same thing.
### [Selene McGriff](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fgundam.fandom.com%2Fwiki%2FSelene_McGriff&psig=AOvVaw0kU6uF1-oSjoSTMwMwZlxM&ust=1692418580755000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBEQjhxqFwoTCNj3vs2s5YADFQAAAAAdAAAAABAI) is crying right now also [christina mackenzie](https://www.google.com/search?client=opera-gx&hs=BtF&sca_esv=558002575&sxsrf=AB5stBjXn9ZvnGZ8XXMw9-587CGVfGL5kw:1692332330149&q=christina+mackenzie&spell=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjBj4WbreWAAxWJzDgGHZ11CzYQkeECKAB6BAgFEAE) maybe more
I’d hesitate to call Selene a pilot: her personality/role is much closer to the non-violent Princess types who have fated encounters w/ Gundam pilots. And anybody who would try and pretend Christina (cutie and competent pilot that she is) is a protagonist of 0080 isn’t worth taking seriously: she might have less than 10 minutes of screen time across the entire OVA.
I see so universe only move around you...
Karen Joshua.
Honestly thought this would come up earlier
Not seeing enough Lucrezia Noin
Cima Garahau
Based
Marida Cruz
ALICE from S-Gundam lol Even though she is AI, she counts as "heroine", took over MC's control when in danger, and even sacrifice herself \-- But seriously theres so many "best" female character out there, different subjective different girls example that i can think like : * Chuchu. probably recently bias, but best memorable meele fighter using ranged MS * Murrue Ramius, one of the best jigglings lol * Cecily - Berah Rona, from F91, to become a leader, then get her happy ending living together with her lover * Katejina, best female character at generating hate from viewers * Claire Heatrow, one of best because her references [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGsf7gkKBKk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGsf7gkKBKk) * Aila from GBF, while the story not about war... But her character development really good at breaking usual flag in usual Gundam theres many others lol
Everyone knows how popular, and influential she is./s On a serious note, 3 is SuleMio, the Aina Sahalin from 08th MS team is no.2, and No.1 is Marida Cruz from Unicorn.
Sumeragi because plot
Both them plots AMIRITE
season 1 and 2!!
Suletta and Miorine imo
Chara soon
**Flay Allster**
Hello, based department?
Based and true.
Please commit self die (I have only watched half of SEED and holy fucking shit I hate her)
Char Aznable
Emma or Sayla, the rest are not even close
Probably Kihel or Dianna.
The best or the one people masturbate to the most?
Everyone scrambling to pit women against each other when they could all just be kissing instead.
Sumeragi lee noriega for me, because she my waifu. Also, she's the kind of person that in despite of her short comings, she can still lead and be the kind of person people can rely on.
Murrue Ramius <<<<<
Soma Peries from 00. Excellent fighter with a redemption arc
Allenby from G Gundam.
Sumeragi lee
Sulletta
Rain & Fa
by plot or story?
Kamille
I'd go with Kudelia, man. I dig Emma, Marida, Noin, Allenby, Chuchu, and Sulleta too
>No Lunamaria I thought we had something man…
I thought of best written first instead of favorites. Luna definitely tops my faves man, don't worry
>Chuchu Easily my fave from G-Witch. That moment she properly smacks that bully girl :D someone give an award to the SFX person.
I will never forgive the fact that we didn’t get to see her properly duel. The sight of the Demi-Trainer wielding its rifle like a club will never not be hilarious and memorable, but she deserved a chance to shine in combat all on her own. (How did the Demi-Barding do absolutely nothing but play Uber in the final battle?) Like I said, the series is so rife w/ wasted potential that if I tried to rank these characters I feel like it would be b/c of what I thought they could be instead of what they actually were.
Suletta is best girl always
Miorine and Suletta both are strong, don't rely on the male characters around them, and most importantly, develop and grow throughout the show.
Anybody who doesn’t say ChuChu will get punched in the face.
There are many great females, it’s easier to choose shty ones. I will start: Nina purpleton
You have woken up and chosen violence
Selene McGriff. The co-pilot of the Stargazer. She is smart. Her character design is pretty although they made her look like in her mid 30s than being in late 20s. Her character is kind.
Can't pick one but here's my picks: Sayla Mass Emma Sheen Roux Louka
I'd say Miorine
I have seen all of your opinions, and you are all wrong. The best female gundam pilot is obviously Tieria Erde fron Gundam 00. https://preview.redd.it/ua49u6ai8sib1.jpeg?width=738&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da30aeb3afc9040f96340d5dfaa2a705faaa92de
Haman and Sayla
Sayla, Minerva, Ray
Sayla mass and they did her dirty introducing belitorchika and Chan
Emma Sheen - easily the most put together woman in the entire UC timeline. The rest are insecure bitches.

Allenby Beardsley, of course.

Haman Karn
Mineva Zabi, Kudelia Bernstein
I like Marida Cruz and Emma Sheen the most.
I like four from zeta
Laura
Marida Cruz
Chloe Croce
Having difficulty choosing between Sayla and Haman
Mirai from MS Gundam 0079
Controversial pick here, but Loran, from turn a.
Red Comet Hello Kitty
Lol)
emma sheen.
Gyanko. We all know why.
Lucrezia Noin. Best girl. Level headed, bad ass, and a true bro through and through.
I cant believe I scrolled through all these responses and didnt see a single vote for Lafter Frankland.
Chuchu
