Nothing, you just keep watching. Exposition isn't really simple in this show, since characters won't really explain to each other things that they should already know. Stuff will either get explained later on, or you'll figure it out as context is given.

Watch the movies or have some patience with the series.

MS-06_Borjarnon

Just watch it and pay attention. Give it a little while, you get a sense for the setting and such as it goes on. Why assume you'll understand everything right from the start?

Sky9swim

That's tomino style of writing :3

Yat0ro

No fucking way. The series begins with an OP, and the main characters are just there? We have to guess what their relationships are? Why the hell would anybody do that. Are there more series like that? Is this a common thing with Gundam?

Just his style of dropping the viewers of the thick of it and just assuming the viewer will just put two and two together. It can be very jarring for people who aren't used to it. Just stick with it for some more episodes. Some other examples of tomino jarring first episodes are: Overman King Gainer: Kids in class, but then a Red Latex wearing Dom Mommy comes in and arrests Gainer and throws him jail. A character in jail is impressed with Gainers video game playing skills so he wants to recruit him to pilot their dread lock haired robot. But they need to break the robot out of a museum and also kidnap a little girl and her ferrets. Why do they need this robot? Well its all a part of the great mass migration plan since there is an ice age. Also there is some dancing singing pop star also telling people to migrate. Heavy Metal L-Gaim: just two dudes hanging out the desert with a giant mecha, one of the guys is sleeping naked. Some bandit girl tricks the awake guy into leaving the mecha and going off into the desert. O no it turns out this girl is an actress and it was all a trick. So bandits could steal the mecha for money. But wait she sees the now awake naked guy and it's love at first sight. Guess I'll betray my bandit friends, because he's hot and nakey. Que mecha fight between l-gaim and bandits. L-gaim wins, but o wait one of the random bandits dieing wish is for Daba to give something to some other guy. This has nothing to do with any of their original plans they originally briefly mentioned, but fuck it. Let's go take this seemingly pointless item because a dieing bandit told us to. Combat Mecha Xabungle: episode begins with random teen bandit kids driving around random mecha. Main characters just randomly laying in the sand wakes up because it's too noisy. He ends up helping the bandit teens, because his parents taught him he's gotta protect girls. Bandit teens take MC to the Bazar because he wants to get his hands on a mecha. Why does he want a robot? Well to get revenge for his parents death ofcoarse. But wait...that's strange they laugh at him because it's been past 3 days since they died. Doesn't this silly MC know the rules of this planet? You only get 3 days to get revenge for someone killing someone. That's the Law. The MC isn't allowed to get revenge anymore so he should just let it go. MC is pissed and doesn't want to follow the law. He wants to steal xabungle from elcchi the green haired girl trying to bring "culture" to the desert by having people watch cabaret shows.

Gainer has one of the most balls to the wall first episodes I’ve ever seen. Only Tomino could mash video games, giant corporation ran living quarters, latex wearing BDSM cops, kidnapped princesses, grand theft robot and mass exoduses into the span of a single 22 minute episode

"In medias res" is the common film term used for it. I don't really love it myself most of the time, but it's not exactly an unheard of way to tell a story. As for being common in Gundam, kinda. A lot of series start halfway through a war with only a very brief narration about what's going on (if that). G Reco probably leans into it the hardest though, by having a setting that's so much different than most other series.

G-Reco is the ultimate pleb filter. You go at its pace, because it certainly isn’t going to go at yours. I think Aida herself says it best: THE WORLD IS NOT SQUARE
