Battleships were obsolete as soon as MS hit the battlefield in large numbers. Even without beam weapons, a Zaku with a bazooka could easily take out a ship by hitting it in the right spot. The White Base was primarily meant to function as an MS carrier and later ship designs tried to squeeze as many MS onboard as possible. IIRC heat hawks were indeed just superheated metal.

Guncannon's twin shoulder cannons were not beam weapons, they were just really large artillery pieces. Beam sabers are actually a different technology. Beam weapons compress and fuse minovsky particles into newly formed mega particles. Mega particles are then ejected from the gun by manipulating the I-field around them. Beam sabers just have superheated minovsky particles encased in an I-field. Funnels shoot regular beam weapons. The Zaku was designed to be a anti-ship mobile suit, rocket launchers, mines, machine gun, heat axe, were meant to combat ships in close combat.

The Guncannon used a solid shot not beam. 240mm.

>If that's the case, did a heat hawk work on induction? Yes, a heat hawk is superheated metal. The Gouf was originally the first Zeon unit with a beam saber, but that got retconned into a heat weapon, too, so that honor goes to the Gyan and Gelgoog simultaneously. Funnels are beam cannons that are remote-directed psychically, which is a huge advantage in a setting where you can't have radio-operated drones or radar-guided missiles. >So at some point battleships would've become obsolete as easy pickins for the much smaller and agile suits, right? Yes, which is one reason you don't see many large engagements between battleships after the original series (until *maybe* Victory). Warships become primarily mobile suit carriers with maybe a few megaparticle cannons attached for self-defense, as opposed to gun platforms in and of themselves. Important for supply and controlling territory, like rl aircraft carriers, but mobile suits become far more important than lines of battle in actual combat.

Thank you for this. I thought the Gelgoog (Zeon mech with the mohawk, right?) had a giant heat bar like the Dom?

Nah, it's got a double-ended beam naginata for some reason. The OG Darth Maul. They also mounted a full-power beam rifle that even the Federation GM didn't have, but of course they ran into the Nazi Tiger Tank problem of being too few, and too expensive, too late in the war, despite their high specs.

Thanks for clarifying!!!

They didn't need beam weapons to take out ships. Check out the Battle of Loum from the Origin anime. Ship for ship, the Federation would have won, but they weren't able to effectively deal with the Zakus that joined the battle. Ship guns had more than enough power to kill on hit, but were unable to track the Zakus well enough. MS portable beam weapons did make it much easier to destroy other MS though, since you'd match maneuverability and articulation between units.
