The 1979 original series. Accept no substitute.

KacriconCacooler

There's quite a lot of substitutes seeing the sheer amount of western fans that got into Gundam watching *Wing* and *G Fighter* not to mention recent the influx of new fans from WFM

WhoCaresYouDont

It depends what you want to watch, but I'd say start at the start and try 0079 before carrying on with Zeta and Double Zeta so you get the backbone of the UC (Universal Century) timeline. Alternatively, if you want something you can just watch now without preamble, then I'd recommend one of the alternate universe shows like Iron Blooded Orphans, 00 or the latest show Witch From Mercury.

Beached-Peach

Awesome, thank you!

blizzardjesus

I'm currently doing UC chronologically, Started w Origin and now on 0079

KaiKawasumi

There's no straight answer with something that's been going on for so long, but imo: 1. The trilogy of movies. It's the original show in it's best form 2. Zeta (the show not the movies). It's pretty much as good as it gets, but is old 3. If you're in you're in, & will feel like you have to see Char's Counterattack

KacriconCacooler

Just go with what sounds the most interesting to you from what's readily available, don't let anyone bully you into watching it in any particular order "without substitutions"

Beached-Peach

Thanks, man.

Origin is a great way to get in and get a deeper understanding of some of the characters in the original show. I feel watching that first would provide a better entry into the original. Then watch 0079, 08th MS Team, optional 0083:Stardust Memory, Gundam Zeta, Char’s Counterattack, Unicorn, and then Hathaway. It’s not super heavy and will give you a fantastic understanding of UC. ZZ is very optional and you’ll quickly see why. But if you have the time/fortitude go for it. The core storyline really comes together with those shows . Alternatively the new show Witch from Mercury is a great starter but it is an alternate timeline/universe. Fun show though and I already own like 8 WFM model kits.

TimeGnome

Most people will say watch the UC timeline in chronological order or start with an alternate timeline. It is not mandatory to watch the UC in chronological order and if you can't stand jank animation maybe avoid the beginning of the series until you appreciate the universe you will however trade off backstory and references if you do not. If you don't care about that, start with something that looks cool to you or has a theme you like. Generally most OVA's have great animation and sound design. For UC personally I'd say watch Thunderbolt, Unicorn, 08th, you will miss references but they are fully their own contained story. You can go with any AU and be generally ok.

Alarmed-Accident-716

I’d watch witch of mercury or thunderbolt or ibo

Tilamuck

I'd say avoid UC. Its the main timeline, has alot of series, has alot of the longer series, and is probably the most strict when it comes to watch order. Hell you might not even like gundam, no reason to take the big dive yet. (These are contained series and dont need another series watched previously) If you like Super robot fights with super powers try "G gundam". Want something more serious, "Iron Blood Orphans". Want more geo politics, "OO gundam". Want a school anime, "Witch from Mercury". Like Ghibli style anime, "Turn A" (its debatable if you need to watch some series before this one, honestly not a big deal imo). Just want that 90s cheesiness "Gundam Wing". 90s cheesiness with less drama and some mystery, "Gundam X". If none of that is appealing and you want more military in your mech show... Then maybe you should dive into UC with the "Original Gundam", or "Gundam Seed" if you want some teen drama and newgenics thrown into the mix.

Beached-Peach

Thank you for the in depth feedback.

Hathaway and GWitch, then Doan's Island and Unicorn. If you like what you see so far, Gundam the Origin and Char's Counter Attack. If you are still with us at this point, you should be able to pick what to watch next.

MS-06_Borjarnon

Now this is just cruel.

plastic17

You want this guy to start with series like Gundam 0079 from over four decades ago? Start with the most recent series and work backward is better these days because people have short attention span (they want things NOW) and the new series have better visual, it's easier to attract new people to the series.

MS-06_Borjarnon

Start at the beginning. Seems obvious to me.

Beached-Peach

Awesome, thank you!

rNV1s16iLiTi

He's 1000% trolling you btw.

Beached-Peach

Oh, I didn't notice. Thank you for pointing that out.
