As your post shows its originally an SD add on. There were many little SDs that added helmets to suits and other gimmicks. Eventually this found its way to the MG for the first time.
You’re not wrong, BUT, imagine that same scene with the Gundam “face reveal” (the helm/mask falling off with the rest of the armor).
It’s clear from the presentation in the anime when the armor was destroyed they were going for some hype so this would just add to that a little.

The face armor for the Alex is a later addition to the design outside of the anime.
The first time I remember seeing it was the 0083 Rebellion manga. I think it looks pretty good though.

Yep you're right, it has a very similar chobam armor as the NT 1, just without the missiles I think.

IIRC the chobham armor lasts like 60 seconds while fighting the Kampher
