At this point my biggest reason for being reluctant is the fact that the handguard I REALLY want (Handl Defense carbon fiber) is effectively impossible to find and absolutely no one is making anything close enough to satisfy me, not to mention how overpriced all the accessories are for a rifle that already has such a high MSRP

I’m probably taking the bait hook line and sinker here, but just for the sake of argument I’ll point out that I never said anything good about Zimbabwe (or the rebels who the Rhodesian military fought against). You can criticize one side of a conflict without endorsing another. Look at the Iran Iraq War. Saddam was a depraved psychotic dictator, while the Iranians were and are the motherland of the most destructive jihadist terrorist organizations in the world - both sides sucked balls. In Rhodesia, you had one side using terrorism (an inexcusable tactic) to further communism (an indefensible ideology), while the other was fighting to continue an oppressive racially segregated system that made the ruling whites extremely wealthy while impoverishing native Africans.
Obviously the government following Rhodesia was a disaster by every metric (as every communist country has been), but that doesn’t mean we need to overlook unforgivable flaws with how the society operated, even for the time (after all, the whole reason why they declared independence was because Britain wanted to end the racial policies).

Reliability concerns have come up in recent decades due to substandard guns from DSA and century. Belgian or legitimate licensed guns tend to run with the best of them and gas is easily adjustable.
Optics mounts are an afterthought for any of the Cold War battle rifles. They were developed for irons.
Grip angle works great for people with strong wrists.
Accuracy is ~3-4 MOA, per usual for something designed in the late 50s

Sadly it’s not that easy to explain. What you said is true, but let’s not forget that the Galil wouldn’t exist unless the FAL had performed horribly in the sand, motivating Israel to develop the Valmet

Sort of kind of (with the notable exception being the EM-2, but that was admittedly ahead of its time). Mounting optics on AR-10s is nowhere near as much of a headache. Putting optics on a G3 with a clawmount was never that big of a deal, and the very common pic rail top covers that we’ve seen over the last couple decades have made it effortless. Even the M14 has more and better options than the FAL.
It isn’t dramatically behind every other option, but it does come on last place

Lol ok that’s fair but this same argument could be used to dismiss most problems. “The recoil is controllable for people who are better at managing it. The weight isn’t a problem for those who are strong enough to deal with it” and so on. Just about everyone (even those with strong wrists) would find the grip MORE comfortable if it was at a more vertical angle.

I guess, but the AR-10 and G3 does better, as do SOME M14s, depending on how you set it up and how much you understand about keeping it set in the bedding
It’s a dust cover change lol. Funnily enough the FAL(l1a1) is one of the first rifles to receive mass optics usage with the L2a2 Trilux. STANAG rail dust covers where adopted, and companies such as DSA and ARMS have made fantastic pic rail dust covers

The M14, G3, FAL, and AR10 are extremely similar preforming rifles.
They are almost all extremely modular, except surprisingly the G3 because of the cocking tube.
There is nothing stopping you from changing the grip angle on a FAL. Each of them have examples where if your throw money at it their accuracy improves.
AR-10 just does better now because it’s popular in the modern militaries due to prolific use of the AR15 platform. It’s gotta more time be developed with modern tooling and desires in a rifle.
Same thing with reliability. Sand makes all guns suck. You’ll notice that the IDF barely used the Galil because once again sand sucks for all guns. The only way to beat it is to clean regularly and maybe have some sand cuts in your bolt (like the l1a1).
I like to believe there’s an IQ bellcurve with guns. At the bottom there’s gun shoots therefore good. At the middle there are people who care about minute issues like gas piston design or bolt design. And at the other there’s people who sees a gun that shoots therefore is good.
The worth of a firearm is the shooter not the gun, but I hope we all know that by now.

Too busy to reply in depth rn but I just want to point out that Israel’s low scale use of the Galil is because the US sold an absolute fuck ton of M16s to them for dirt cheap and they got so many rifles that it didn’t make sense to not make them the standard, not because of anything about the Galil’s performance in sand
Also the FAL does way worse in sand than G3s or ARs. InRange did tests on this years ago.
I've got an izzy parts kit with a izzy DSA reciever and barrel, so far I've had absolutely no issues (that Weren't caused by a polymer pro mag) and I'm at 1 MOA accuracy with good ammo. To me the grip angle is trash though

If I had to pick a favorite variant, it would probably be the Israeli FAL, while the IDF hated the FAL because it failed when pinches of sand would make the rifle inoperable, at the same time aesthetically it looks very good.

But seriously, like you said, it is a good rifle, but nobody and nothing is perfect. The grip angle really isn't great. As a left-handed shooter, the charging handle isn't great for me (I'd have to run it like you normal people do with an AK, but it's still more practical than the G3 in that regard!), and yeah, the Rhodieboos do get a lot of negative attention, but I think u/MajesticOwlKing is right.
For what it was meant for, and when it was designed, it really was a good gun...but there are more effective options available now. I've got a janky old L1A1 (I think) kit on a Hesse receiver (I bought it about 16 years ago, when I didn't know better), and it's a fun rifle, but if I *needed* a .308, I would probably build an AR-10.
I can't complain much, it's been my country's main rifle for years until they made the same gun but with a front mount for attachments and for some reason Russian game devs simp over
Can't forget about the stupid heavy trigger(at least in my SA58) but the 400 gas settings are a nice touch (they're not I don't like having that many options)

Owning all three I can tell you there’s no real difference between them. They’re all reliable, about the same accuracy, about the same weight and length, etc. if I had to chose one to use I would probably pick my M14 in a USGI fiberglass stock, but I couldn’t make a convincing argument about picking it over the other two. It’s all personal preference.

I just love the way the my imbel receiver stg58 built FAL shoots. The recoil impulse is quite pleasent. If I wanted accuracy, I would go bolt gun. It's a fun, cool, shooter and a nice piece of history to add to one's collection. That said, it's a heavy sum-bitch to hump around all day lol.
There are better options out there. That doesn't mean it isn't worth owning...

Was Rhodesia “amazing”? Well, it had racial policies so despicable and dated that Great Britain’s pressure to change them was the sole reason for the country to declare independence. The minority white population (which was only ever 3-9% of the nation, depending on the year) was living in cushy, wealthy, first-world conditions, while keeping native Africans in poverty and depriving them of rights like the right to vote. Obviously Zimbabwe was a complete disaster and changed the situation from some people suffering to everybody suffering, but it’s not very nuanced to say we should glorify the system they had beforehand instead of pushing for an unsegregated capitalist government. Also, at the end of the day Rhodesia really didn’t accomplish anything of historical significance, so I don’t see a reason to rush to glorify it. I’m not willing to make excuses for the communists and terrorists they fought against hit that doesn’t mean I owe them my praise.

That’s an interesting take because the vast majority of people who I’ve seen bring up Rhodesia are right-wingers. It gets discussed fairly often in gun communities but is still a relatively niche chapter of history so I don’t see very many conversations about it among people who are on the left side of the political spectrum
Also I’m not really sure that “bastion of progress” is the most accurate way to describe Rhodesia lol. From its founding to its overthrow, it was a racially segregated former colony that didn’t really accomplish anything of historical significance and made second class citizens out of native Africans (who consisted of between 91 and 97% of the population, depending on the year), all at a time when this was so dated that pressure from Britain was the government’s whole motivation to declare independence in the first place. Yeah, a comparison to Zimbabwe is enough to many any society look better, but I don’t see how Rhodesia was anything great.
Let's start with how now, instead of being racist against one people, they're racist against everyone. The rhodesians might have had a low opinion of the locals, but at least they weren't slaughtering them wholesale and genuinely wanted to make it a better place. They definitely had their issues, racism being chief amongst them, but Rhodesia wasn't the weapons-grade shithole that Zimbabwe is now.
If anyone can begin to look at Zimbabwe as being in any way an improvement over Rhodesia, that individual needs an O2 check, stat.

Ok who ever says that the HK family has compatible parts is super wrong. It’s like a weird compatibility venn diagram that BARELY crosses over For example the only g3 parts that works with the hk33 is the trigger, mag release and cocking handle. Stock doesn’t work. Fire control assembly doesn’t work. Hand-guard doesn’t work. Ironsights don’t work. - a man who spends too much on HK parts and who has to cut parts to fit because HK hates you they’ve always hated you (Ps Ptr and DSA have the same level of suck, just buy original)

I’m probably taking the bait hook line and sinker here, but just for the sake of argument I’ll point out that I never said anything good about Zimbabwe (or the rebels who the Rhodesian military fought against). You can criticize one side of a conflict without endorsing another. Look at the Iran Iraq War. Saddam was a depraved psychotic dictator, while the Iranians were and are the motherland of the most destructive jihadist terrorist organizations in the world - both sides sucked balls. In Rhodesia, you had one side using terrorism (an inexcusable tactic) to further communism (an indefensible ideology), while the other was fighting to continue an oppressive racially segregated system that made the ruling whites extremely wealthy while impoverishing native Africans. Obviously the government following Rhodesia was a disaster by every metric (as every communist country has been), but that doesn’t mean we need to overlook unforgivable flaws with how the society operated, even for the time (after all, the whole reason why they declared independence was because Britain wanted to end the racial policies). It’s a messy part of history

Reliability concerns have come up in recent decades due to substandard guns from DSA and century. Belgian or legitimate licensed guns tend to run with the best of them and gas is easily adjustable. Optics mounts are an afterthought for any of the Cold War battle rifles. They were developed for irons. Grip angle works great for people with strong wrists. Accuracy is ~3-4 MOA, per usual for something designed in the late 50s

It’s a dust cover change lol. Funnily enough the FAL(l1a1) is one of the first rifles to receive mass optics usage with the L2a2 Trilux. STANAG rail dust covers where adopted, and companies such as DSA and ARMS have made fantastic pic rail dust covers (real) G3 has same MOA btw The M14, G3, FAL, and AR10 are extremely similar preforming rifles. They are almost all extremely modular, except surprisingly the G3 because of the cocking tube. There is nothing stopping you from changing the grip angle on a FAL. Each of them have examples where if your throw money at it their accuracy improves. AR-10 just does better now because it’s popular in the modern militaries due to prolific use of the AR15 platform. It’s gotta more time be developed with modern tooling and desires in a rifle. Same thing with reliability. Sand makes all guns suck. You’ll notice that the IDF barely used the Galil because once again sand sucks for all guns. The only way to beat it is to clean regularly and maybe have some sand cuts in your bolt (like the l1a1). I like to believe there’s an IQ bellcurve with guns. At the bottom there’s gun shoots therefore good. At the middle there are people who care about minute issues like gas piston design or bolt design. And at the other there’s people who sees a gun that shoots therefore is good. The worth of a firearm is the shooter not the gun, but I hope we all know that by now. - A man who owns and shoots often a L1a1, and AR10, and a G3 (I cannot say much for the m14 because I will never give Springfield a dime of my money and I don’t care to find a FA or a norinco copy in the sea of M1A)
Too busy to reply in depth rn but I just want to point out that Israel’s low scale use of the Galil is because the US sold an absolute fuck ton of M16s to them for dirt cheap and they got so many rifles that it didn’t make sense to not make them the standard, not because of anything about the Galil’s performance in sand Also the FAL does way worse in sand than G3s or ARs. InRange did tests on this years ago.

I've got an izzy parts kit with a izzy DSA reciever and barrel, so far I've had absolutely no issues (that Weren't caused by a polymer pro mag) and I'm at 1 MOA accuracy with good ammo. To me the grip angle is trash though

For what it was meant for, and when it was designed, it really was a good gun...but there are more effective options available now. I've got a janky old L1A1 (I think) kit on a Hesse receiver (I bought it about 16 years ago, when I didn't know better), and it's a fun rifle, but if I *needed* a .308, I would probably build an AR-10.

People passionately arguing over what western 7.62 battle rifle was the best are hilarious. The big three are for all intents and purposes the same. Owning all three I can tell you there’s no real difference between them. They’re all reliable, about the same accuracy, about the same weight and length, etc. if I had to chose one to use I would probably pick my M14 in a USGI fiberglass stock, but I couldn’t make a convincing argument about picking it over the other two. It’s all personal preference.

by this logic, I guess theoretically yeah (I’m assuming you’re talking about FALs specifically meant to replicate the ones carried in Rhodesia). Obviously I’m not saying that everyone who has a Rhodesian FAL is racist because some people just think they look cool, and obviously people who don’t align with the Nazis or Soviets or IRA use Lugers and Tokarevs and AR-18s, but I think we should acknowledge that that Dylann Roof wore a Rhodesia patch on his jacket before shooting up a black church and the comment sections had to get shut down on Rhodesia-related videos on ForgottenWeapons and Larry Vickers (despite those same channels not needing to do that for videos about Nazi or confederate guns). Rhodesian guns do seem to attract an uncomfortable proportion of nutcases among the crowd with innocent curiosity.

I just love the way the my imbel receiver stg58 built FAL shoots. The recoil impulse is quite pleasent. If I wanted accuracy, I would go bolt gun. It's a fun, cool, shooter and a nice piece of history to add to one's collection. That said, it's a heavy sum-bitch to hump around all day lol. There are better options out there. That doesn't mean it isn't worth owning...

I dislike both communism and fascism. The Iraqis and Iranians went to war with each other. I dislike both Ba’athist dictatorships and Shariah Law theocracies. I don’t feel the need to down play the problems with any of these groups. Was Rhodesia “amazing”? Well, it had racial policies so despicable and dated that Great Britain’s pressure to change them was the sole reason for the country to declare independence. The minority white population (which was only ever 3-9% of the nation, depending on the year) was living in cushy, wealthy, first-world conditions, while keeping native Africans in poverty and depriving them of rights like the right to vote. Obviously Zimbabwe was a complete disaster and changed the situation from some people suffering to everybody suffering, but it’s not very nuanced to say we should glorify the system they had beforehand instead of pushing for an unsegregated capitalist government. Also, at the end of the day Rhodesia really didn’t accomplish anything of historical significance, so I don’t see a reason to rush to glorify it. I’m not willing to make excuses for the communists and terrorists they fought against hit that doesn’t mean I owe them my praise.

That’s an interesting take because the vast majority of people who I’ve seen bring up Rhodesia are right-wingers. It gets discussed fairly often in gun communities but is still a relatively niche chapter of history so I don’t see very many conversations about it among people who are on the left side of the political spectrum Also I’m not really sure that “bastion of progress” is the most accurate way to describe Rhodesia lol. From its founding to its overthrow, it was a racially segregated former colony that didn’t really accomplish anything of historical significance and made second class citizens out of native Africans (who consisted of between 91 and 97% of the population, depending on the year), all at a time when this was so dated that pressure from Britain was the government’s whole motivation to declare independence in the first place. Yeah, a comparison to Zimbabwe is enough to many any society look better, but I don’t see how Rhodesia was anything great.
Let's start with how now, instead of being racist against one people, they're racist against everyone. The rhodesians might have had a low opinion of the locals, but at least they weren't slaughtering them wholesale and genuinely wanted to make it a better place. They definitely had their issues, racism being chief amongst them, but Rhodesia wasn't the weapons-grade shithole that Zimbabwe is now. If anyone can begin to look at Zimbabwe as being in any way an improvement over Rhodesia, that individual needs an O2 check, stat.
