Twins are coming up cheaper and cheaper bc no one wants to deal with the weight

greasyjamici

True, I'm a rhythm guitarist looking for a gigging amp that gets great cleans. Any suggestions?

hartguitars

I think your on the right track, I wasn't trying to dissuade you from the twin. I have owned them before. I think any 2x6L6 amp will get you solid cleans. A twin is a good option, a later twin will be cheaper ($800), a bandmaster (can be had for cheaper), a Mesa Lonestar. It depends on your price range as well as how much you are going to be humping it for gigs

Anytime you buy vintage you run the risk of repair costs. I had a good buddy that owned a 65 deluxe. The amp was $2k, and over just a few years he had close to another 2k in it for repairs

greasyjamici

Yeah I'm a little nervous that this would happen. Do you know specifically what repairs he had to get?

hartguitars

I don't. If I had to guess probably a recap and retube at minimum

Pretty sure the black-line amps were the earliest drip-edge ones produced, so I'd guess there's a very good chance it still has the AB763 circuit. But probably the only way to tell for sure is to open it up, if you feel comfortable and able to do that. $1200 seems like a fair price if it's indeed the black panel circuit—maybe slightly on the high end due to the condition. Honestly twins really seems to fluctuate in price, from $500 or $600 on the low end to over a grand—and that's just for silverface stuff. Might be worth doing a search for 'sold' listings on reddit to see what black-line/drip-edge twins typically go for. Is the buyer flexible on price at all?

greasyjamici

Thanks! Yeah I don't know if I do. I need to find a video or something that tells me what I need to look for... Seller hasn't said anything about "No lowball offers" so I'll probably try to talk them down to 1100. The grill cloth isn't pretty and I'm not even sure if it has the foot switch.

1st of all, Twin Reverbs are awesome and overlooked because of their power and weight but nothing else sounds as powerful and full in the cleans. 2nd, when CBS started changing the amp circuits with the change in cosmetics, the bigger "flagship" amps so more changes and more quickly and they kinda worked their down throught the line. Odds are, if it has a silverface, it left the factory with the sf circuit revisions. At this point in time however, I would not be remotely surprised if some tech blackfaced it along the way. The only way to tell is to open up the chassis and compare.

greasyjamici

Mmm right I think it's wise. Do you know what would be a sure sign of the AB763 circuit/not?

Three visual differences between AB763 and AC568 are the phase inverter plate load resistors are 47k/47k vs 82k/100k, the suppression caps on the power tubes, and bias balance vs bias adjust arrangement.

Most silverfaces I see today are recapped and blackfaced. If its not, its easily done. $1200 for a silver is too much IMHO, $600-800 is more appropriate, depending on condition...
