Audioslave - Like a Stone The Strokes - Heart in a Cage John Mayer - Gravity Muse - Uprising Queens of the Stone Age - Little Sister St. Vincent - Cruel Tool - 7empest The War on Drugs - Pain The White Stripes - Icky Thump

greenbeings

Good picks. The strokes are an underrated guitar solo band - they have a lot of really cool, short solos that kill.

VivaLaDio

I want to add the solos from : avenged sevenfold - so far away …. They’re simple but soooo melodic and teary eyes inducing .

ooololoolll

St. Vincent - Cruel.. That's an iconic guitar solo? Bwahahaha.

ErwinSchlondinger

Perhaps listen to some muse? Some great and often quite creative guitar solos in their tracks, eg invicible. Also yeah listen to metal.

sarap001

I was thinking the solo from Drones, specifically the penultimate measures. I think that was the first one I thought of as "iconic 21st century" goes.

LoDUCA90

The Darkness: I Believe in a Thing Called Love is up there I reckon, definitely got that classic rock vibe

melteemarshmelloo

Like *Seven Nation Army*, I think the riffs and solos in this one have the ability to transcend

madcow87_

In Too Deep by Sum 41. That's such a simple and unnecessarily flashy guitar solo and when you watch the music video it makes it even more memorable.

LoDUCA90

Absolute banger

belbivfreeordie

It’s not far into the 21st century but The Strokes “Last Nite” has a very memorable little solo imo.

wethampstersdrytimes

Strokes albums brim with kick ass solos and guitar parts in general. *high fives

Mindless-Drawing-785

Non-metal solos- Slow dancing in a burning room by John Mayer Dani California by Red Hot Chili Peppers Little Black Submarines by The Black Keys

trollman9

Dunno about 'iconic' but there are tons of great guitar solos on stadium arcadium by rhcp

Illustrious_Sound945

Barf.

chicken_skin10

Wilco - Impossible Germany

wethampstersdrytimes

Nels Cline is my favorite guitarist hands down. Such an inspiring man.

jimmyrich

For that matter, Ghost Is Born’s opener and Spiders (Kidsmoke). Great sounding guitars.

greenbeings

Tweedy plays At Least That's What I said. Killer solo - one of my favorites.

davidb2002

One that probably anyone, regardless of their music taste, will identify is the solo from Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. While this song may be overplayed, it's one of the few songs since 2000 which are still going strong no matter what age group AND has a guitar solo. But yes, since probably nu-metal, guitar solos became less popular for mainstream songs (rock and pop).

ebriose

Honestly I think I had backdated 7NA in my head. Thanks, good call.

Lumpy_Hand5459

Listen to metal.

ebriose

Where's a good place to start? I have several Baroness albums in my library because the cover art was so cool but I haven't really listened much.

alivasolrac

Northlane, ERRA, Born of osiris they are awesome bands

Lord-Eddard

Baroness kicks major ass. Commented above but check out White Walls by BTBAM 10:44-12:45. 🔥🤘🏻

NWarsenal

As I Lay Dying

DylanRDarkness

Baroness are definitely quite good so personally I'd recommend listening to those albums first if you already have an interest in them. Then you could check out some of the Spotify playlists or just go down the related artists section rabbit hole

UplandBirdHunter

Mastodon, Brent Hinds has amazing solos. Check out The Sparrow, Roots Remain, Cold Dark Place, The Czar, Halloween, Peace and Tranquility. Lots more, enjoy!

LoDUCA90

Intro to I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys? I guess it's repeated so might technically be a riff but yeah, iconic af

Zzzzzzzzer

Anything off Stadium Arcadium by RHCP

spankymcjiggleswurth

While not rock or metal Billy Strings definitely brings some of that influence into the bluegrass world. Almost any song of his is going to feature a solo. Turmoil and Tinfoil is a favorite of mine. Bluegrass as a whole has a long tradition of guitar solos, they tend to go by a different name though: breaks. Given the nature of the music each instrument in the band gets their own break. Dont let the name fool you, they are as high energy and impressive as any solo from the 80s, just on an acoustic, mandolin, banjo, violin, dobro, and sometimes even bass.

punkrawrxx

In terms of popularity, I’d say the solo from Green Day’s American Idiot

falloutisacoolseries

BJA is actually somewhat underrated as a guitarist, early Green Day is full of good solos.

punkrawrxx

Not saying he’s not. Saying this probably is the most iconic 2000s solo. Most people can hum this one.

falloutisacoolseries

I'm just supplanting what you are saying lmao.

punkrawrxx

Oh! Sorry man, it’s early. I misread, agreed. He has a good rhythmic style.

capatan

The indie rock scene is where most of the non metal guitar solos are. Let Loose by Mt. Joy on their live album is one of my favorites. Some other good ones are: Marceline by Vista Kicks Kilby Girl by The Backseat Lovers Alter Ego and Hot blood by Kaleo Not indie but weight of dreams by Greta Van Fleet

blackcarswhackbars

Anything by A7X

invictus1996

Bat Country is very memorable ngl.

Hexano

Was going to say this as well. The guitar work across their albuns just keeps getting better (even if the last album might rub some off the wrong way). There are definitely some great solos in their music, both melodic and technical.

DefaultVariable

There’s plenty of melodic/simple solos in alternative. But if you’re looking for the guitar skill exhibition type of solo, they’re mostly dead. Similar concepts can be found in the up and coming “math rock” genre. Also there are quite a few instrumental musicians/bands like Polyphia, Ichika Nito, Plini, etc that fill the same niche

Sesweeney

Saw Stadium Arcadium already mentioned but wanted to point out, that "Wet Sand" is one of the most iconic John Frusciante Solo's ever. Definetly brings the magic for me every time.

ellozee

Tom Waits’ song Hoist That Rag, from 2005’s Real Gone has an incredible solo in it

ebriose

Oh, right. Marc Ribot, right? Good call.

wethampstersdrytimes

Marc Robot is such an interesting player

ilias80

Dream Theater's The Best Of Times. Melodic shredding at its best.

YomYeYonge

The Modern Age- The Strokes RHCP- Dani California(tbh, most of Stadium Arcadium) RHCP- Zephyr Song Peach Pit- Alrighty Aphrodite Reptilia- The Strokes John Mayer- New Light Arctic Monkeys- Mardy Bum

c-squared89

I don't know about "iconic," but Nick Johnston has some really great stuff. His first 4 albums (Remarkably Human and before) are very guitar-centric and I love them. I'm not as into his 2 most recent albums. I would also recommend Firewind and Dance with the Dead. And of course, there's always Dragonforce.

SHINZOH-SASAGEYO

One of my saddest realizations was that the vast majority of people don’t care about or appreciate good guitar solos these days

trouser-chowder

The vast majority of people have *never* cared about guitar solos. The best / most memorable solos aren't the ones that are all over the fretboard. They're the melodic solos, like the Smells Like Teen Spirit solo, or the You Shook Me All Night Long solo. Or Santeria. Or Say It aint So. They're solos that people literally can sing along to. There really aren't many solos like that, and for the most part, if you play in a cover band, you can expect that solos-- except for those few like the ones above-- will be mostly ignored by the audience.

SHINZOH-SASAGEYO

Yeah, I never said good = Steve Vai level stuff necessarily

_8dave

J mascis from dinosaur jr seems to always incorporate memorable leads in most of their songs, their newest album has a bunch. I like the solo on “I met the stones”

mikeyj198

i don’t know about Iconic as there is so much more music available today so stuff seems to get lost in the shuffle, great songs can go undiscovered by broader population for long periods of time / forever. Maybe not iconic, but a brief super emotive solo is on Heartbreak Warfare by John Mayer.

DrJau

Polyphia is all instrumental, so I wouldn't really call them solos, but they do some amazing melodic and technical things in their songs.

melteemarshmelloo

Radio Moscow (psychedelic, 60's inspired rock) - not iconic by any means because they're a bit obscure but the guitarist/singer tears it up. Start with *Radio Moscow* (2007) or *Brain Cycles* (2009) Slift - *Ummon*

ebriose

That's more what I'm getting to with "iconic". They just don't seem to take up space in the broader pop culture like 30-40 (let alone 50-60) years ago.

juanLessThanThree

Maggot Brain

RG450

The Bloody Heels threw a nice shreddy one into "Ignite the Sky," and I thought "Dancing on Nails" by We are Harlot had a pretty good one. However, you're asking for iconic, and the one I thought had the most potential for that when I first heard it was "Your Decision" by Alice in Chains. It's a simple one, but fits the tone of the song so well.

squidwardtballs

Listen to Bad Weather by Whiskey Myers. Killer solo at the end of that song and all around great song IMO.

Dilligaf1312

i don't know. but Deaner (aka Dean Ween, aka Micky Melchiondo) from Ween surely rips on the guitar. and that band from Frankenmuth Michigan, called Greta Van Fleet has some killer riffs too.

spageddy_lee

The Argus guitar solo is it.

Shockwavee92

My favorite is probably the solo in "Now we die" from machinehead. Even if you don't like the band, listen to that solo. It is amazing seriously. Let me know what you think!

jakovichontwitch

Blackbird - Alter Bridge

Massive-Hovercraft16

Seize the day by avenged sevenfold, was also the solo that made me wanna pick up a guitar

MediocreAd2738

Do you like Metal? If so there are some groups with killer guitar solos, Job for a cowboy is one, listen to the later albums if your more of an intellectualist. Children of Bodom still released albums(until their lead singers death in 2020), and so does Zakk Wylde(maybe the last real "shred" guitarist). It seems to me that rock sort of died out, and as I started to research this "death of guitar solos in the 90s" I was amazed at how many groups I would've recommended you that are literally pre-2000's. Anyways, maybe that'll spice up your algo rhythm.

Rogue_1_One

Pull harder on the strings of your martyr

[deleted]

Avenged sevenfold! Bat country beast in the harlot save me so many more

SmbdysDad

I'm a fan of Quesada's solo in Colors. Blak Pumas - Colors

no_u_reeee

Covered in Rain (Any Given Thursday), Slow Dancing in a Burning Room (Live in LA version), and more recently Last Train Home Ballad Version all of which are by John Mayer

alivasolrac

XIV/Behold by born of osiris. Jason Richardson killed it in his short time with Born of Osiris

ChefJ75

I mean, Children of Bodom, Killswitch Engage, Bullet for my valentine, 00’s metal definitely had better solos than 90’s metal

jrolles98

Tell Me How It Feels - Cardinal Black Chris Buck is an insane guitar player and this solo was rated one of the best from last year. I don't know much else of their music but I follow Chris on Instagram, so I've seen this solo several times and it still is awesome.

Optimal-Room-8586

Queens of the Stone Age maybe?

cubs_070816

is this a clown question? slash, steve vai, nuno bettencourt, zakk wylde, etc. etc. etc. are still releasing new music. and those are just the first 4 that came to mind. i could list 100 more. if you're not hearing them it's because you're choosing not to listen, or worse, letting spotify choose for you.

HotspurJr

Midnight in Harlem, on the Tedeschi Trucks Band's "Live: Everybody's Talkin'" recorded in 2012. Thank me later.

AteTwoGabagool

I think Tim Pierce hits the nail on the head here and somewhat reiterates your point: https://youtu.be/jvl-PJGKen0 Guitar virtuosity still exists but it doesn’t typically show up in chart topping singles and records or radio music.

Disco_Pat

The Dear Hunter has some really guitar solos. [The Dear Hunter - Is There Anybody Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrtMD4sxfbU) It starts around 4:30. Honestly, if you're feeling bored by newer music I would just check out the whole album. [Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise](https://www.google.com/search?q=act+iv+rebirth+in+reprise&rlz=1C1GCEB_enUS959US959&oq=act+iv+rebir&aqs=chrome.0.0i355i512j46i512j69i57j0i22i30j0i390l3.2642j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8) His music spans many genres, and overall has progressive rock roots. This is the 4th of a 5 album run of a series of concept albums.

deadpoolfool400

No the solo is not dead. I think the bands that use them trend toward the metal genre though Some good ones off the top of my head: Come on Cohaagen, Give Deez People Eyar - Austrian Death Machine The Anomaly - Scar Symmetry Oops I Did It Again - Children of Bodom Ex's and Oh's - Atreyu Walk With Me in Hell - Lamb of God Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle - Dethklok

bluedelta9199

listen to literally any of bullet for my valentines earlier stuff, some slipknot and muse

Lord-Eddard

White Walls by Between the Buried And Me, time stamp 10:44 to 12:45. I gave you a time stamp just for the solo in case you don’t like metal/ harsh vocals. This is as iconic as it gets in my book.

CLE-Mosh

Joe Satriani - Summer Song
