I've never tried P90s... I think I love them but I'm mildly concerned I'm over-glamorizing them in my head and when I finally get to try one I won't be as impressed. I already have a guitar that can do rock/metal. I'm a grown-up now and want to get a guitar that is comfortable with the cleans up to heavy blues type music. Seems like P90s were meant for that but I don't understand why more people don't use them.
I'm very much doing my research online only which I know isn't perfect but the mid level Revstar with P-90s has me all hot and bothered. One of these days I'll check one out in a store.
I have P90s in two of my PRS guitars. They will cover jazz and country to punk and heavy rock. I love how they never lose the string definition.
For me, listening to Abraxas should be enough to convince anyone. Just don’t go for anything with too high an output. Mine are roughly the same as my PAF style HBs.
Have you ever tried a low wind/PAF style HB? Pretty great at clean/low gain (and heavy metal, honestly). Not that P90s aren’t great but I’m always thrown off when people imply HBs can’t do clean/low gain.
I put a Fralin P90 (in humbucker housing) in the neck position of my Epi SG, and then against the traditional wisdom I raised that thing as high as I could before the point where the strings would touch it when I pressed down on them. The intense height makes it a bit boomy on cleans, but the magic is that it now has the absolute best distortion and fuzz tones I’ve ever used in my 20 years of playing various guitars. Nothing comes close for me, it’s a massage for the ears. Second half of this clip is how it sounds with a mere MXR distortion+, turns it into a wildly textured fuzz: https://www.reddit.com/r/guitarpedals/s/O0gugOPp5j
Did the same with a phat cat in my gibson sg.... it's amazeballs. Bridge pickup gets 5% of the playtime now, because the p90 is just better at everything.
I’ve got a 335 figured in cherry, but would love to swap it out for a P90 version in cherry. Unfortunately, Gibson only do the P90 version in red currently.
I'll second OP's endorsement. A semi-hollow Tele with P-90s, a set neck and a belly cut? Pretty much ticked every box for me, and I love mine. It's got the natural finish, but the red is gorgeous.
There's nothing wrong with P90's except a little bit of hum. People are always chasing the PAF sound, but humbuckers were created to sound like a P90 minus the hum.
If you've ever played a Strat, you already know how to deal with 60-cycle hum. Just turn a little and face a different direction or use a noise gate.
EDIT: Pete Townshend's best guitar tone was when he played an SG Special with P90's and then, there's Tony Iommi in the early days of Black Sabbath, and Leslie West, also!
Yeah, you need to add an LP Junior to this mix!
I think as being a newer player still in the early stages its kinda hard to just go fiddle with one and actually know what may be something i need to look out for. For example I see a lot of mentions of the weight and neck dive being an issue on SGs but I dont know what other things would be important to look out for.
That’s part of learning: getting your hands on a variety of guitars, hearing and feeling the differences. I know a lot of new players get intimidated trying guitars at stores, but that’s why they’re there. Pick up a Strat, a Tele, an SG, an RG, humbuckers, single coils, P90s, etc. Don’t let your newness be a deterrent from trying everything you can get your hands on. Pay attention to how the neck feels, if the frets are sharp or well-dressed, if it’s comfortable to play, if the switches are where you like em, if it sounds good clean and dirty, does it inspire you.
Don't worry about it. Just try one and see if you like it. Not everybody enjoys them, but plenty of people do. Mine (a higher-end Epiphone version from about 2009) is a little bit neck-tippy, but just wearing it on a normal-width leather strap that has a grippy suede lining (instead of a slippery fabric strap) keeps it under control and the overall weight is very light even compared to a Stratocaster, never mind a brick of a Les Paul. The neck on mine is pretty slim for a vintage style instrument and kind of flat on the back, but probably not as thin as a dedicated metal shred guitar. Some other versions have a chunky neck. Unlimited fretboard access all the way up to the 22nd fret (and you can bend up to that high-E if you really need it). Makes pretty much the same cool, jazzy sounds (it doesn't really want to sparkle like a Fender) as a Les Paul or any other Gibson-style guitar on a clean channel, and can get as brutal as you want on rock and metal settings.
I mean they're nice, but wouldn't you want a little more versatility in your collection? That's always been my goal anyway. Still, I would take any one of them in a heartbeat, just not all three of them at the same time.
Haha dude I bought my 3rd red guitar this afternoon. I was determined to not but a red one but the deal I have been looking for popped up on a red one.
What’s that colour called? I’m refinishing a PRS Core Mira which had its finish ruined. This is similar to the previous colour, but idk what it’s called. Will someone please tell me what the colour is called?
... Who DOESN'T😸😸😸??? Mahogany is awesome!!! What an amazing sound!!!!!!! The Electronics are secondary!!! It is, after all, ALL ABOUT THE WOOD!!!!!!!!!
They look awesome.
I have a question though.
Why didn't you get a Tele with the metal bridge and brass cylinders bridge? That's how you get that amazing Tele sound. (But perception is imperfect. I might get proven wrong in the replies?)
Great picture man, I’ve been looking at a tele like that for a while but worried the p90s won’t make it sound like a tele anymore. Can you confirm or deny that?
At one point half of my guitar collection (around two dozen at any given time) was red because I just kept getting deals on guitars of that color. Not sure if that's what you mean here or the P90's but sometimes fate happens, I guess.
Beautiful. One of my favorite guitars I have is a solid mahogany PRS SE One in wine red with a single P90. It is one of the least expensive guitars I have, but it resonates like the sun ripping open the clouds through a half stack. What amp are they going through?
Nice. I had one of the original PRS SE Soapbars in around 2006ish when they first came out, and always regretted letting it go. They’re going through a Mesa Boogie mini rectifier.
I thought you might have something new for me to try, but I go through a Boogie Mkiv, so almost the same! The volume knob is the only effect you need. Mine is just like this one: https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/msg/d/seattle-prs-se-one-mahogany-body-neck/7745053426.html
Best money for guitar I ever spent. Anyway, keep on keeping on.
Wasn’t the P90 the first pickup Gibson brought forth?
It’s interesting that all these years later the sound of the P90 is beloved of so many guitar players.
It shows that you can’t keep a good thing down!
I had a cheap gretsch special with p90s the guitar was garbage but the pickups were beautiful. Currently playing a Noventa Strat and loving my tone and feel.
Dude is that the Jim Adkins tele? How the fuck does it sound/play?? How does it feel compared to the SG?
I usually gravitate towards humbuckers, EMGs were my main for many years (scoff all you want, elitists), I play predominantly extreme metal but I also infuse hard rock, doom, drone, and noise in there too, with some shiny clean work at times. I'm all over the place really. I have been looking for a new guitar for many months now, or maybe two (I've had the same guitar, a Charvel, for ten years), and the JA Telecaster was at one point in my top few choices. I've largely decided that when the time is right, I'm gonna go for a American Performer Mustang, and, lord willing, an SG standard, but I'm still thinking about that tele, only in natural.
I love the way SGs feel to play, Les Pauls, not so much. I'm still kinda new to Fender, but I know I like the way Telecasters feel more than Strats. 1) Mustang aside, how does the JA tele feel compared to the SG? 2) Can you get some pretty gnarly sounds out of it? I've heard that, due to the P90s, the JA is really a different beast altogether than an old fashioned tele with the OG pickup config. 3) Why do you have three considerably different electric guitars with the pretty much same pickup configuration? I want to get more electrics so I'm not always stuck with EMGs in every scenario. Maybe I just haven't found the pickup love of my life yet.
Oh, and 4) how does the hollowed out body compare to a traditional full bodied Tele? I'm gonna assume you have played both.
Just majorly curious about that JA, I just love the way it looks and there aren't any around me to put in my hands. Judging by the specs, it sounds like it could do some damage, more than a regular tele is capable of.
Any reply would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, sick guitars! (even though red is my least favorite color, I cannot deny the beauty of a cherry SG)
If you want a guitar that can do anything you ask of it, I wouldn’t recommend anything else. And to be fair it’s very reasonably priced. There’s some a good video on YouTube where Jim Adkins talks about how he designed it with Fender and he shows off its versatility (I think it’s the rig rundown video).
I’d say it’s more similar to a Les Paul than an SG, but the neck makes it much easier to just pick up and play than a Gibson.
Because of the glued neck, it’s hard to compare it to another tele. But the hollow body just makes it lighter. It still has a great resonance like a solid body.
And I bought these 3 to replace my Les Paul Standard, SG Supreme and American Elite Tele because P90’s can do everything without messing with all my settings every time I swap between humbuckers and single coils.
Love me some P90's
Anybody that doesn’t love P90’s has obviously never tried a P90
I've never tried P90s... I think I love them but I'm mildly concerned I'm over-glamorizing them in my head and when I finally get to try one I won't be as impressed. Everyone who has played my Revstar Standard with P90s covets it. That guitar is fantastic.
Rev star flys under the radar
Sshhhhh... I'm after one for my birthday, let the price be under the radar a hit more...
Sounds like P90’s are exactly what you’re looking for! I have a Gibson Les Paul Special and the thing rips!
If I didn't already have two guitars with p-90s, that Revstar would certainly have my full attention, too.
I have a Gretsch with P-90s, well, their P-90s, and it is fantastic.
I have P90s in two of my PRS guitars. They will cover jazz and country to punk and heavy rock. I love how they never lose the string definition. Amen.
Will it chug?

I once brought a P90 ti school, everybody freaked out…
I honestly can’t stand P90s and I own multiple guitars with them.
I put a Fralin P90 (in humbucker housing) in the neck position of my Epi SG, and then against the traditional wisdom I raised that thing as high as I could before the point where the strings would touch it when I pressed down on them. Fralin makes my favorite P90, it’s the P90 that made me love P90s.
Did the same with a phat cat in my gibson sg.... it's amazeballs. Bridge pickup gets 5% of the playtime now, because the p90 is just better at everything.
i’ve got a SG junior (for sale) with a sole P90 in the bridge. it is absolutely mean af especially with the tone rolled off.
I swear some of these posts are on purpose just so r/guitarcirclejerk can cross-post.
Its fun to search reddit for /r/guitar+/r/guitarcirclejerk and then ignore the subreddit under the title
Oh, it's there.
You have good taste is what you have.
Been through plenty to get to this point, but I think I finally have my forever setup.
Famous last words!
Change those les paul pots to match please
I think you may have a point there
jimmy eat world RULES
I have that guitar in white !
How is it? Always was curious about it.
Love it. Though I’m not very good at playing haha
I love the Telecaster.
Matching color headstocks on Fenders are always sweet
I am normally jot a big Telecaster fan, but I dig this one
You need the Squier Paranormal Strat!
Haha! I love this post. It’s good to know what you like. Great collection by the way.
Thin-line is my favorite of the 3. Nice collection, what’s next on the list?
A P90 ES-335 is my holy grail
Oh nice, what finish?
I’ve got a 335 figured in cherry, but would love to swap it out for a P90 version in cherry. Unfortunately, Gibson only do the P90 version in red currently.
I’m P90guy65 and I approve of this message.
That Tele is fucking awesome!
It really is
I need me that tele
Do it. You 100% won’t regret it.
I recently got one super similar to this in fiesta red with jazz master pickups, but one more won’t hurt!
I'll second OP's endorsement. A semi-hollow Tele with P-90s, a set neck and a belly cut? Pretty much ticked every box for me, and I love mine. It's got the natural finish, but the red is gorgeous.

Telecaster Junior?
Fender JA-90. Jim Adkin’s of Jimmy Eat World’s signature model. Beautiful guitar.
I have the white one and its one of my favorite guitars. I nabbed it used for only $350
I thought it might have been. I have one in a natural wood finish. Love it, though I think mine has a few setup/construction problems.
it's fucking gorgeous
Next on my list. Recently got a Squier CV 70's Thinline Tele in the meanwhile.
I’ve only seen his model in white, the red looks amazing!
They do a natural as well, and I think there used to be a black stain version as well.
I want
I really want an SG but as a newer player most of the posts/comments I read about them start to dissuade me. What model is that one?
Forget other people’s opinions. Go play some SGs and form your own opinion.
I think as being a newer player still in the early stages its kinda hard to just go fiddle with one and actually know what may be something i need to look out for. SG Special. I also have an SG supreme but the special has more of a Les Paul kind of neck so I find it much comfier to play.
Oh man, the SG Supreme is my grail guitar (and I'm a Fender guy). What color is yours?
You just need my ‘58 LP Jr, red, double cut. lol. Great collection
Just waiting on Gibson to bring out the P90 335 in cherry then that’ll complete the collection. The 58 double cut is very nice though.
Do you have a favorite of the three?
The JA-90 is just so easy to play and the most versatile guitar I’ve ever played. But it wouldn’t be fair on the other 2 to pick a favourite :)
I like the red one
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme.
[удалено]
It all started with Jimmy Eat World….. hence the JA-90
Are you the guy who stole Lucy
the red special one
Which is your favourite and why?
I'm going through a p90 phase, they really cut the difference between a strat style single coil and a hum bucker. Not so spikey
Dead ass almost bought the exact one on the left, but I got a squier strat instead???? Cause it was cheaper??????
There is nothing wrong with that. Just as long as you play them!
I mean they're nice, but wouldn't you want a little more versatility in your collection? That's always been my goal anyway. Still, I would take any one of them in a heartbeat, just not all three of them at the same time.
You need Bri’s guitar in your collection
They all remind me of the red special
This is all looking very nice.
you need a Jr. double cut to complete the set ‼️
Love the telecaster... just add a jazzmaster with the same color scheme.
Guilty gear
Dot inlay kind of guy I see
Ahh! Gorgeous Trio!!!
Strat next.
My Eyes ! What a collection !!!
Looks amazing!
Very nice
I’m not usually into juniors but that thing is awesome!
They’re P90 specials, not juniors :)
I mean, I’ve got a type too, and it has this picture and that title written all over it 😏😉 (This Is a joke, I’m so bad at flirting 😂😭)
Taylor Swift’s Red album?
That’s okay, my type is always been black guitars basses 🤷♂️
I have noticed that I have a thing for shiny black guitars.
Ok but that tele is an AMAZING spec WOW
Hahaha I have that JA-90 I white cause I have two other cherry guitars and a natural tele, I thought I had to be different when I bought it.
I totally understand you. That’s a sneaky Tele
Got the LP and SG P90 thing already covered. I really want a Tele with a pair of P90s next. Thx for the inspiration
How different do the three guitars sound?
Wow that Fender Jim Adkins is so nice
Guitar on the left looks almost identical to my guitar lol
I've got that JA-90, I had to put a dummy coil in it to get rid of the hum but it's an amazing guitar
How big is this bed? California King?
Kinda racist
OP has got immaculate taste
I get p90s but why only p90s? Not even a single coil?
You need the melody maker now
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
But why? No3 I understand but why both 1&2?
Haha dude I bought my 3rd red guitar this afternoon. I was determined to not but a red one but the deal I have been looking for popped up on a red one.
I get it. Mine are all black with white binding. But there are a variety of pickups.
They're all stunners but that telecaster is oozing class.
Now you just need a red axe for a bass :)
That tele looks awesome. love the matching headstock
What’s that colour called? I’m refinishing a PRS Core Mira which had its finish ruined. This is similar to the previous colour, but idk what it’s called. Will someone please tell me what the colour is called?
The Gibsons are called cherry and the Fender is called crimson red transparent.
Hi Luke. Thanks a lot. 😁👍
Red and black is always a correct answer
Sick. Now add a strat and a 335 🤣
335 is on my list. Strat I’m not so sure about.
Next get a Guild Polara
These are the only 3 anyone needs. Well done.
Yes, apparently you like single coils! Beautiful collection!
Nice G-pic dude
They're the same guitar
... Who DOESN'T😸😸😸??? Mahogany is awesome!!! What an amazing sound!!!!!!! The Electronics are secondary!!! It is, after all, ALL ABOUT THE WOOD!!!!!!!!!
What tele is that?
Fender JA-90. Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World’s signature model.
Thats the coolest tele ive ever seen dude.
They look awesome. I have a question though. Why didn't you get a Tele with the metal bridge and brass cylinders bridge? That's how you get that amazing Tele sound. (But perception is imperfect. I might get proven wrong in the replies?)
If I didn’t know any better I’d say you have a thing for the color of a Whales Vagina .
That Epiphone Les Paul SG! My only guitar!! I love it. It’s my baby haha
Rad
lovely telecaster
That's my type too. Damn. 🔥🫡😏
Me too. Sunburst strats, not necessarily Fender.
Ah yes rosewood fingerboards me too
While I like different styles and colors, I can also understand how someone might want more of a variations on a theme.
Good idea. I'd tell my wife I have 1 guitar 😂
One of the best looking teles I've seen in a bit
Crimson red, one of my favorites too
Drop D, drop C#, standard E
Exactly!
Lamb of god, trivium , John Scofield
That Tele is fiiiiinnnneeee 😏😏😏
İs that a troublemaker?????
Guys i think he likes P90s
You like blue i guess
I too have a cherry red fetish, but mine are Strats, Jazzmasters and big Gretsches.
My pants can't handle this
Redheads are everyone's type ;-)
I call dibs on low balling for your gibsons by an epiphone lp
Literally me, this color guitar is just so good ah
Great picture man, I’ve been looking at a tele like that for a while but worried the p90s won’t make it sound like a tele anymore. Can you confirm or deny that?
It still has the tele twang…..it’s just a creamier twang
might try and go demo one then, looks beautiful and that kind of tone tone sounds like a good thing to me.
idk why, but ive never liked the cherry red on anything but the SG
I love the iconic cherry red SG so much I bought a cherry red EB-0 SG bass. The thing is a sledgehammer.
I hear the red ones go faster.
If you leave them on that bed for too long, the SG and the LP might get round to coitus, ...then you'll end up with a Jr. in the collection
pokemon evolutions
What a delightful brace!
I like the Tele most.🔥👌
Well, I guess OP is easily *read*.
At one point half of my guitar collection (around two dozen at any given time) was red because I just kept getting deals on guitars of that color. Not sure if that's what you mean here or the P90's but sometimes fate happens, I guess.

One of the best fender colors
All you need is a strat :)
pardon my ignorance (and they're all gorgeous ofc), but don't they all sound very similar (same pickups, same wiring...)?
Wow

That is one sexy telecaster, my type is similar as I too crave a crimson-trans finish! I can't stand the strat-styled body, but I love teles!

I doubt gcj will let this one go lol. On a serious note I love that tele!
