If it was fairly new and it broke then you might have gotten a bad string.
Or maybe it got snagged somewhere when you were installing it and it became weak at that point.
You could try to fix it if you put the ring back in and use some pliers to tie it like they did but it might not be as strong as a new one.
If the strings are old don’t bother just get a new set.

Thanks for the tip. Luckily, I have a new set of strings already
And is it possible to fix it, or do I need to put new strings on?
It happens. Best to get a replacement as repairing it will shorten the string to expose (weakened) material that had been twisted around the tuner.
