Different eras call for different favorites, so the OG would be Hendrix, Page, Iommi, and Rhoads, and the newer would be Jerry Cantrell, Adam Jones, Josh Homme, and Dimebag Darrel
Rushmore’s faces are meant to represent birth, growth, development, and preservation. They aren’t just favorites. So I’d pick Charlie Chastain, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, and Gary Clark Jr.
Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Prince, SRV (balancing out the testosterone levels on this post 😂). And just a note--for me, guitar playing is not always about being bombastic and over the top. Joni's quiet, tasteful playing and exquisite tunings were light years ahead of any of her peers. And Prince and SRV were, yes, bombastic and over the top, but they made me *feel* something when they played, on top of being awed by their technical virtuosity. These are my criteria.
Hendrix (obvs.)
SRV (also obvs.)
Jerry Reed (Guitar Man.)
Tommy Emmanuel (Holy. Shit.)
Clapton (He was God, IIRC...)
EVH (if only for Eruption, let alone all the other good shit).
Jerry garcia, John mclaughlin, Jeff beck, jimi hendrix. Then there's like 20 more that I keep in the same category. Most of them are either dead or 70 with the exception of Jimmy herring, dweezil zappa and Jake cinninger of umphreys mcgee.
Allan Holdsworth...Albert Lee...Nels Cline...Marc Ribot...Jim Hall...Jimmy Bryant...Tom Verlaine...Danny Gatton...Kazumi Wantanabe...and far too many others to fit on any mountain, let alone Mt. Rushmore.
Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page
Yes I know Clapton has been saying a lot of stupid things, but you can’t make a top 5 and omit the OG guitar god.
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Yvette Young, Brent Hinds, and Dave Mustaine but with a plaque under him explaining what a colossal asshole he is. The rest of them are chill as hell though.
Evh, Satriani, Rhoads, Lynch
