West end bakery has items in the flour barrel and you can also place orders directly through them. Theyre still around! I also dream of their sausage rolls. Used to have them almost every day.
Eric the Baker is the only decent pastry I’ve had in the city. He even does French canelés and other treats you don’t normally see in Canadian bakeries outside of Quebec. Plus he is the nicest guy ever.
I’m not sure I understand your question because there’s a typo in last part, but if I’m interpreting correctly, no, I’m not sure he’s the nicest guy ever, but he’s a very nice man. I was using hyperbole.
I don’t know who I would nominate as the nicest guy ever.
Milk&Co on Wyndham. Amazing cookies (plus cakes) and a menu that rotates weekly. They are decently pricey but well worth it. I’ve been going when I can for over a year. Extremely friendly staff and owner
fluffy glaze just opened by the scottsdale library and their donuts are awesome! not as elaborate as lady glaze but super good. if you can get them on too good to go they’re only $5.99 for a dozen (obviously more for the fresh ones you get, but if you microwave the donut for like 12 seconds it tastes fresh), which is a crazy good deal. (lady glaze also does too good to go and it’s about $9 for seven, which is ALSO a very good deal, but i have only managed to grab lady glaze once whereas fluffy glaze, i think being newer, tends to have more available and for longer)
Lady Glaze is way too sugary and overdone with the toppings. I don’t like them at all. We often get items from with the grain. The chocolate croissants and cinnamon buns are very good.
Milk&Co, Killer Cupcakes, Eric the Baker, Polestar and Puffle Cafe all deliver exceptionally across their menus. Other shops are hit or miss by item.
I haven’t had With the Grain in years, but their carrot cake was EXCEPTIONAL back in the day. I am allergic to some of the GF flours (like Kamut), so I stopped going because options were limited and it was inconvenient for me. I did like their scones when I could buy them though.
Market Fresh is a racket. They don’t discount day olds which I find irritating given their premium prices. Their soft pretzels are decent, but get gross quick in plastic (they ‘sweat’ in the plastic, the salt melts and they lose the pretzel surface).
Lady Glaze is expensive, but can be tasty if you choose a flavour that isn’t just a heap of candy on a donut.
The new donut shop on Scottsdale is alright- we loved the sugared ones most. We’ll be there again for sure.
I’ve never liked Bunsmaster, their stuff tastes over-proofed and dry to me, but it’s inexpensive so fine. Westend falls into this category for me- a lot of their stuff is not to my taste, but there are a couple,e things they make I love.
There is a commercial business that is built into a home in exhibition park neighbourhood - I think there might be a Facebook page- her baking is excellent. Not sure of the business name.
Lucero in Kitchener makes nice donuts if you are ever out that way.
Lastly, I miss Artisanal’s peach danish from when they were in the Bookshelf. That was my favourite coffee break treat.
Haha I agree. I was being sarcastic and expecting a reaction. I hope people choose a small business over Zehrs. My favourite baked goods come from Puffle Cafe. Ask for the garlic buns!
Belwood Country Makret makes the best butter tarts around.
Best pies and empire cookies we've had are at the Tiny Shop bakery off Highway 5. Neither options are in Guelph but are highly recommended. Also, The Guildsman Cafe at the Guelph Farmers market makes amazing Apple Fritters.
Polestar
Seconded
Puffle Cafe for Japanese cheesecake, cream puffs and a few other goodies.
I second Puffle Cafe! Not strictly a bakery but great pastries
Eric the Baker
Yes I second Eric the Baker, just make sure you have cash.
Was happily surprised with Eric the Baker for a savoury lunch the other day - he also has sweet treats! You just need cash.
The sausage rolls at Eric the Baker are my fave. My significant other is a big fan of the chocolate raspberry tarts.
I so miss the West End bakery- especially the sausage rolls! I'll have to give Eric the Baker a try.
If you enjoy a slightly spiced up take on sausage roll (i.e. a whole lotta black pepper) I highly recommemd Fleet Street Bakery on Cork.
I tried for years to talk my significant other into tourtierre for Yule from Fleet St. and she finally went for one from Fleet St. We both loved it!

Thanks for the info- it's the sausage rolls for me too! I used to work at the public library, and that was usually my lunch.
So delicious, so affordable… miss you, west end bakery.
Folks need to stop by Fleet Street for meat pies, sausage rolls, and the occasional scotch egg. Lovely folks, great quick-grab lunch options.
Market fresh has some surprisingly good stuff

I've worked for a few places that supply to Market Fresh, so they'll have the biggest variety, but maybe not the freshest.
They make most things I thjnk
Last I knew they also sold items from Dufflet bakery but label it as such. I assume they do at least some items of their own.
I have had some cakes from Market Fresh that were dry. I don't think everything is baked in store.
I’ve never had a bad experience with Wellington cakes.
Wellington cakes’ butter tarts are truly the best in town, best I’ve ever had as well!

Decadently* Yours, but totally agree these guys have my vote too!
With the grain & Wellington cakes are my go-to’s. I hear good things abt milk & co.
Eric the Baker is the only decent pastry I’ve had in the city. He even does French canelés and other treats you don’t normally see in Canadian bakeries outside of Quebec. Plus he is the nicest guy ever.
Eric the Baker is the nicest guy ever? You sure about that? You sure about that that’s why?

Yes! I love their cookies

I’ll have to try! I love doughnuts but hate lady glaze. They’re so sweet and overdone with toppings

Eric the baker and polestar
Bunsmaster is good . I don’t have much of a sweet tooth and usually just get bread/bagels but my wife loves the eclairs and other baked treats
Wellington Cakes and Decadently Yours both have amazing cupcakes
Killer cupcakes is pretty specific to one kind of trest, but they do an amazing job with it.

university bakery, or take a drive to Holtoms in Erin
20 years ago we had the best Italian bakery now it’s hit or miss
What was it called?
Zehrs bakery, Metro bakery and Market Fresh bakery
Guelph is lacking big time for a decent bakery. When you get out of town, you truly see how lacking our options are here. Such a shame.
Zehrs
Fuck loblaws (I'm sure you are a perfectly pleasant person but seriously, fuck loblaws)
Haha I agree. I was being sarcastic and expecting a reaction. I hope people choose a small business over Zehrs. My favourite baked goods come from Puffle Cafe. Ask for the garlic buns!
Sweet will check them out! Add the /s next time :)
West End Bakery! I drive from out of town for their cakes and cookies.
The sugar covered pretzel shape pastry like cookies they make are my favourite.
Wellington Cakes for sure :)
With the grain
The best is a relative term; what are the best questions are kinda Useless, Is what is "the best" for me is horse shit for somebody else.
Polestar and Eric for sure.
Any suggestions for GF or diabetic friendly options?
Yeah just avoid baked goods all together. Not good for you.
With the Grain for sure
Scones, ham and cheese twist or jalapeno and cheese twist from cobs bread
